Fahrenheit 451 On Sunday, November 9 at 2:00 in the Library Meeting Room, U.C. professor Rob Latham will present “Ray Bradbury and Fahrenheit 451.” Latham, an acclaimed ex pert on the fascinating world of science fic tion, has written on such strangely dispa rate subjects as vampires, cyborgs, Ray Bradbury, and Tim Burton. FRIENDLY NOTES NOVember 2014 Volume 10, Issue 2 Editor: Lynn Burrows Friends of the Claremont Library As we wind down this Centennial year of the Claremont Library, we take this November opportunity to thank our Friends for making this such a year of celebrations. A special thank you for the renovation of the Children's Library, and to Laura Bollinger and committee. For the Children's Book Festival in March, we thank Connie and Maria Rodriguez and their hardworking team. The Centennial Gala was the work of Barbara Musselman and the Centennial group. Thanks to the On the Same Page Committee for their work and choice of Fahrenheit 451. And we thank Linda Jure witz, who has created the Library Memories Project. Our profound gratitude goes to Barbara Musselman and her intrepid squad of volunteers who regularly sort, price, and shelve books in the Library Book Store, and to those who join us to work at the book sales. And a big thank you to those of you who buy books from our store and donate your books to us for sale. Our Board has been particularly involved this year, and thanks for all the help: special callouts to Lynn Burrows for the newsletter, to memberships coordinator Laura Mulroy, to Rose Ash for the Clare mont Author's Project, to treasurers Kathie Rosaker and Adrienne Long, to Board secretaries Barbara Rugeley and Lynne Matute, to Judi Lipsett for the website, and to Facebook page manager Melanie Swezey Cleaves. President's Message CHS students participated in the Farenheit 451 debate. We also thank Amy Crow, the Claremont Library manager and the very helpful team of library personnel who support us every day. Thanks to the City of Claremont for choosing the Friends of the Claremont Library to be the Honored Group in the 4th of July parade, and thanks to the Claremont Courier and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin for being stalwart reporters and supporters of our library. And thanks to you, our members, for committing support for our local library, and helping us to provide updated and relevant materials and programs for all.

A Successful Year for the Friends’Book Store

The FOCL Book Store had still anothersuccessful year thanks to our book donors andbook buyers. Antiquarian Book Sale Coming for the Holidays

The Antiquarian Book Lovers Book Sale is coming on Saturday, December 6 from 10:00 a.m. to4:00 p.m. The Holidays will be upon us shortly, and we invite you to come browse through ourcollection of distinctive, gorgeous, whimsical, rare, groundbreaking, artful, and literary booksthat will delight each person on your gift list. And there will be plenty more for you to keep foryourself.You'll find books published by specialty printers, some rare and very valuable, as well aschildren's books, old and newer with beautiful illustrations. There are collections of early andlater classics in the fields of history, sociology, biology, botany, psychology, and religion, plusbooks on the Civil War, Indian history and arts, and classics of Greece and Rome. Availablealso are books about California history, birding, wildflowers, and natural habitat.We have first editions and fine reprints of significant and classic works of literature — fictionand non­fiction. And some works have been autographed by their authors or illustrators.Our real forte is beautiful books of art and artists, ceramics, painting and sculpture,photography, museum exhibits — actually, all the fine arts. Find prized cookbooks and bookshighlighting gardens of the world, architecture, interior design, fashion, Hollywood icons,sports, games, toys, and dolls – all that intrigues our aesthetic senses.

CLASP Needs Volunteers

Claremont After School Program (CLASP) is lookingfor volunteers who want to make a difference in thelives of Claremont elementary school children.CLASP volunteers help kids with homework, playeducational games or work on craft projects.Volunteers act as friends and mentors to one or two children who need help in order to succeedin school.
