GCCI is embarking upon new ventures in Chandigarh. In view of this, CEO

visited Chandigarh office and interacted closely with staff members. All staff

members were in buoyant spirit. They exuded a high degree of confidence

to keep tryst with the emerging tasks.

One of the bedrocks of GCCI’s policy is to economically empower the peo-

ple specially the women belonging to cancer afflicted families or the eco-

nomically weaker section of the society. GCCI has established Livelihood

Training Centre at Bapu Dham, Sector 26 in Chandigarh in conjunction with

Manav Vikas Samiti with the support of State Bank of India. In the Centre,

the training in Tailoring is imparted to females free of cost . The duration of

the Training Course is 6 months. At present, 31 students in the age group

of 12 to 30 years, are getting training in the Centre. The students attend

the Centre in two batches .The timings are 2-4pm and 4-6pm. Even during

the training, the students are getting assignments and earning money. The

project is having a very positive bearing on the quality of life of the stu-

dents.

NATIONAL CANCER AWARENESS EVENTS

CHANDIGARH

The cancer awareness event organized at Elante Mall on Sat, Nov’ 15, 2014 in a collaborative effort between Global Cancer Concern India and NPCDCS, UT. Chandigarh (under the National Health Mission) was a great success by any standards. It was inaugurated by Dr. G. Dewan, DMS, GMSH, Sector -16, Chandigarh. Mr. Manoj Aggarwal, Head L&T ReaLty, Chandigarh, Mr. Mahim Singh, Mall Director Elante and Dr. Manjeet Singh, Head NPCDCS UT, Chandigarh were present on this occasion. More than 2000 visitors inter-acted with GCCI’s volunteers. They were handed out cancer awareness book-lets and ladies especially were also given pamphlets on breast cancer, made especially for this event. Pink ribbons as a symbol of solidarity in the fight against cancer were put up on visitors. The visitors were also asked to write cancer related messages on the backdrop. Two LCD screens were used to show cancer awareness material and videos. The services of about 22 volun-teers were used in interacting with mall visitors throughout the day from 11 am to 8 pm.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO CANCER PATIENTS

Financial Assistant cheques were distributed to the families of cancer patients

by Rt Rev Thomas Samuel,Bishop during the celebration of Grand Parents Day

organized at Hawkswoth Vidyapith. Hawkswoth Vidyapith has raised Rs.

1,52,000.00 to support GCCI’s various activities for the well being of poor can-

cer patients and their families.

RURAL CANCER SCREENING CAMP AT VILLAGE GWAL PAHARI

HARYANA -GURGAON

With the intent of spreading awareness on the issue of Eye Cancer, GCCI in association with RBL Bank conducted an eye cancer awareness and detection camp in Gurgaon on Sunday 21/12/2014. The objective of the Cancer detection camp was to detect the Cancer at an early stage so that effective treatment is made available to the poor and needy. Before organizing detection camp, need assessment was done, pamphlets containing information on cancer, symptoms and treatment modalities were distributed to the Gawalpahari villagers, and the banners were erected at prominent places for the pub-licity of the camp. The camp aimed at spreading awareness and sensitizing the larger community on the issue of Eye Cancer – its causes, symptoms, and care. One Ophthalmologist and two Cancer specialists along with four paramedic staff were

deputed for the camp to screen participants of Gawal Pahari village. The camp started

at 10 am and end at 2:00 Pm. It was attended by 115 villagers. They were screened for

sign of eye cancer and other type of cancers. Seven persons were referred for Cataract

surgery and four were referred for Pap test.

VISIT TO CANCER AFFLICTED VILLAGES

UP-GREATER NOIDA

It has been recently reported by print and electronic media that at least

five villages around Chhapraula Industrial Area in Greater Noida in UP have

seen an abnormally high number of cancer cases surface in the last five

years. These villages are Sadopur, Achheja, Sadullapur, Bishnuli and Khera

Dharampur, a rural swathe about 30 km from Delhi. In view of the media

reports, GCCI’s team Including Dr. Harvinder Singh Bakshi, Mr. Aslam, Sr.

GM-NCR and Ms. Ajeeta Singh, GM-CSR visited Chhapraula area. The team

interacted with pradhans , community leaders and other residents of can-

cer afflicted villages, medical authorities and cancer patients to assess the

situation and collect data with view to launch a Mobile Primary Health &

Cancer Care Unit.

Charitable Trust Surehli.

RURAL AWARENESS PROGRAMME

PUNJAB– ROPAR

Mr Ravinder Singh, Asstt Manager gave an awareness talk on cancer for the residents

of village Rodu Majra, about 15 kms from Ropar. About 50 villagers attended his talk.

This is his first attempt at addressing any gathering outside of schools. His talk was

suitably modified for the special event and he carried it out quite confidently.
