Marc Chagall at the JThe JCC is delighted to announce the gift of Judaica bythe world-renowned artist Marc Chagall, donated byDr. & Mrs. Michael G. Marcus. The beautiful gift wasgiven on the occasion of Dr. Marcus’ honoring by theJCC at the Community Leadership Awards in June. Thework is a collection of three limited edition glycees de-picting biblical scenes entitled Chanukah, Moses & theTen Commandments and Exodus. They are museumframed as a triptych.

One of the most successful artists of the 20th cen-tury, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) came from a large de-vout Jewish family in Vitebsk, Russia. He was a painter, printmaker and designer who also created theater setsand costumes, murals, stain-glass windows (the mostfamous installed in the synagogue at Hadassah Hospitalin Israel) and tapestries. Retrospectives of his work have been held at the

Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Artand the Jewish Museum to name a few. In 2004, an exhibition at the Haggerty Museum at Marquette University in Milwaukee described hisBible Series prints as showing “Chagall’s fluid forms, dreamlike sense of space and unique style. In his choice of subject matter, Chagall revealshis reading of the Old Testament in its moments of triumph, sorrow and prophecy.”

This new addition to the JCC’s art collection can be viewed next to the elevator on the first floor. Look for it the next time you’re in thebuilding, and enjoy this beautiful work of art.

Carol’s CornerHealthy foods that can help you lose weight is my subject matter thismonth. Now that we are coming into the winter months, we are lookingto maintain our sizzling summer physique. Here are a few good foodtips along with 3 or more group fitness classes that will start you onyour way:• Eggs: Have 2 eggs in the morning with one slice of wheat bread. Eggsare loaded with protein which makes you feel fuller and research hasshown that protein helps to prevent spikes in blood sugar which leadsto food cravings. • Beans: They contain cholecystokinin which is a natural appetite sup-pressant.• Low calorie salads: They fill you up so you eat less of the pasta andother high calorie foods to help you lose weight• Green Tea: the antitoxin catechin in green tea helps to speed up yourmetabolism • Pears: Great snack for in between meals as they contain fiber to helpyou feel full longer.• Lean beef: the amino acid leucine found in beef helps you burn fat.

Additional foods are olive oil, grapefruit, high fiber cereals, tofuand nuts. Along with group fitness classes you can start to trim downto look and feel great.

Dear Fit Pro’s:I feel like an overstuffed turkey myself on Thanksgiving Day. How doI gather enough energy to break a wishbone?

- Mrs. Gobble Gobble from SI

Dear Mrs. Gobble,We completely understand that the av-erage Thanksgiving dinner has over2000 calories and can be a real chal-lenge if you are watching your waist-line. We can offer you some eating tipsso that you can still look good and behealthy after the feast without havingto deprive yourself.• Thanksgiving dinner is not an all youcan eat buffet: Fill your plate half withveggies, one quarter with lean meat and the rest with a starch of yourchoice. Eat slowly and stop when you are full.• Side dishes-watch your portion size: go for smaller portions. This wayyou can sample all the different foods. Moderation is always the key.• Turkey-go skinless: choose your 4 oz turkey portion skinless to slashaway some fat and cholesterol. Save your appetite for the side dishesand dessert. • Drink plenty of water: alcohol and coffee can dehydrate your body.Drink calorie-free water to help fill up your stomach and keep youhydrated. If you cannot control the ingredients that go into a dish, simply limit yourself to a smaller helping size. Again moderation is thekey.
