NOVEMBER 1 1909 The Schola Major (or Collegium Maius) opened in Rome, Italy, as decreed by the General Chapter of 1894. Begun as a residence for Redemptorists to pursue advanced studies, it offered academic courses. Christopher McEnniry, John Zeller, and Francis Romer were among the first students. After a few years, it offered only classes in Redemptorist topics, while academic course work was pursued at Roman universities. Discontinued during World War I, it was reopened by the General Chapter of 1921 in October of that year. (It is different than the Alphonsian Academy begun in 1949 as a graduate faculty of moral theology which is not limited to Redemptorists.) 1985 REV. JOSEPH OSTRANDER died at the age of 63 at St. John Neumann House, St. Louis, MO. Born in Kansas City, MO, November 2, 1921; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 30, 1943; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1948. He received an S.T.D. in moral theology from the Angelicum, Rome. He taught at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, for seven years. He then served as parish priest, rector, and pioneer superior at Fargo, ND. He did retreat work at Glenview, IL, and Fargo, ND, and later was on the formation team at St. Louis, MO. Born in Kansas City, MO, November 2, 1921; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 30, 1943; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1948. 1752 VEN. FRATER DOMINIC BLASUCCI died at the age of 20 at Caposele, Italy. Born in Ruvo, Italy, March 5, 1732; professed at Ciorani, February 2, 1751. He lived with St. Gerard Majella in Iliceto for some months. Poor health compelled him to give up studies. He was the brother of Peter Paul Blasucci who later became the third Superior General.

NOVEMBER 3

1883 BROTHER JOHN STOEGER Servant of God, died at the age of 73 at Eggenburg, Austria. Born in Engersfeld, Austria, October 4, 1810; professed in 1840. He was a gardener all his Redemptorist life, a model of prayerfulness and humility. His cause was introduced in Rome in 1915.

1939 REV. JOSEPH BEIL died at the age of 87 at St. Alphonsus Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in New Orleans, LA, April 25, 1852; professed at Annapolis, MD, September 1, 1869; ordained at Ilchester, MD, September 1, 1877. His vocation was preserved in the novitiate when his eyesight was strengthened through prayers to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. He was a pioneer teacher in the first minor seminary in Kansas City, MO. He pioneered also in Davenport , IA, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. He was rector in several communities, including the novitiate and major seminary. The last twenty years of his life were spent in St. Alphonsus Parish, Chicago, IL.

70 years professed; 62 years ordained. Buried in St. Bonifaee Cemetery, Chicago, IL

1946 REV. THOMAS NEALON died at the age of 72 while stationed at St. Thomas, Coeur d’Alene, ID. Born in Garrison, County Fermanagh, Ireland, May 23, 1874; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1901; ordained at St. Louis, MO, July 4, 1906. He came to the U. S. when he was seventeen years old. Most of his active life was spent in the Vice-Province of Oakland: Seattle, WA, Fresno, CA, Portland, OR, and Coeur d’Alene, ID. He was an apostle among the African Americans in Fresno, CA. His kind and gentle manner made him an ideal parish priest. He suffered a stroke while giving a conference to sisters in Billings, MT. 45 years professed; 40 years ordained.

Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fresno, CA.

NOVEMBER 4

2000 REV. STEPHEN PLEI died at the age of 72 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Chicago, IL. January 5, 1928; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1951; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1956. Although he served in six other parishes, he spent twenty-three years in Baton Rouge, LA, serving eleven years as associate at St. Gerard’s Parish and Athletic Director at Redemptorist High School. He became pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Greenwell Springs, LA where he oversaw the construction of the church. Suffering from diabetes and a stroke, he spent the last three years of his life at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. A somewhat shy person, he was diligent in prayer and fidelity to both his religious life and the care of parishioners, especially the sick. 49 years professed; 44 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

2004 REV. JOHN EDWARD BELLON died at the age of 90 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Detroit, MI, May 11, 1914; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1936; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1941. Affectionately known as “Johnny” to his confreres, he was an extremely friendly confrere who loved to talk. His friendliness served him well as a Redemptorist Missionary preaching throughout the United States, and he counted as his friends many priests in both religious and diocesan circles. Johnny served two stints in the Navy as a Chaplain; otherwise you could find him stationed in various parishes throughout the Midwest ministering as a missionary. He was a very skilled photographer and an accomplished pilot. For 40 years he faithfully attended the “Priest Pilot’s National Convention.” Fr. Johnny enjoyed his life and life seemed to enjoy him. 68 years professed; 63 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

NOVEMBER 5

1988 REV. DANIEL DeBOLT died at the age of 78 while stationed at Holy Redeemer Parish, Portland, OR. Born in Pennsylvania, December 29, 1909; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1932; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1937. After a short time as a teacher at Oakland, CA, he began his life work as missionary. He can be called one of the last of the “old time missionaries.” With the transition in the Church that flowed from Vatican II, he moved to parish work. He served as pastor in Coeur

d’Alene, ID, and Seward, AK, as well as parish priest in Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR. He had a vivid personality, capturing the attention and hearts of people. He did missions in Hawaii and had many lasting friends among the Islanders. His last few years he suffered from cancer. Died at St. Mary’s Rest Home in Beaverton, OR. 56 years professed; 51 years ordained. Buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Portland, OR.

NOVEMBER 6

1903 CLERICAL STUDENT ADOLPH DORN died at the age of 23 at St. Clement’s College, DeSoto MO. Born in Hoesbach, Bavaria, June 14, 1880; professed at Kirkwood, MO, August 15, 1900. Tuberculosis forced him to abandon his studies while he was still in philosophy. A sojourn in Denver did not help him regain his health. 3 years professed. Originally buried in the Cemetery at Mt. St. Clement’s College, DeSoto, MO. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1954 REV. HERMAN ARMSTEAD CATTERLIN died at the age of 74 at Holy Redeemer, Detroit, MI. Born in Effingham, IL, August 15, 1880; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1903; ordained at St. Louis, MO, May 20, 1908. He attended St. Louis University before entering the Congregation. He was forced to leave the minor seminary twice because of poor health. His health problems persisted in the novitiate but his novice master, Adam Herz, settled it all with this decision: “Frater Catterlin, you make your vows; if you die, we bury you.” He was a military chaplain in World War I. Mindful of his own early difficulties in following his vocation, he aided many young men and women to religious life. He was an excellent missionary, he served in Fresno, Whittier, Livermore, and Oakland, CA. The last twelve years of his life were spent in Detroit, MI. 51 years professed; 46 years ordained. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Detroit, MI.

1981 REV. THOMAS MANWARING died at the age of 83 at St. Alphonsus Parish, San Leandro, CA. Born in Coronado, CA, April 28, 1898; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1922; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 12, 1927. He taught at Oakland, CA, and was rector there. He was superior in Seattle, WA, and Great Falls, MT, and was named Provincial of the Oakland Province (1959-1964). He moved the Provincial Residence from Livermore, CA, to San Francisco, CA, and opened a novitiate in Bridal Veil, OR. He built the Palisades Retreat Center in the early 1950’s. He served as Provincial Procurator from 1967-1977 and retired

at San Leandro, CA. He was known since seminary days as “Dewey.” 59 years professed; 54 years ordained. Buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Sacred Heart Section, Hayward, CA, (Near Oakland)

NOVEMBER 7

1966 REV. NICHOLAS MIESSEN died at the age of 73 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, San Francisco CA. Born in Inglewood, CA, March 20, 1893; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1918; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1923. He was stationed the greater part of his life in southern California but spent a few years in Seattle, WA, Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Bridal Veil, OR. His hobby was raising birds. He was a well known missionary and was very kind to people. He built the rectory in Whittier, CA, when superior there. He was superior at Livermore, CA, when that house was closed and he moved to San Francisco, CA where he died. 48 years professed; 43 years ordained. Buried in Resurrection Cemetery in Montbello, CA, (Near Whittier)

1967 REV. TARSICIUS AMARAL was elected thirteenth superior general and rector major in Rome.

NOVEMBER 8

1814 REV. FRANCIS DE PAOLA died at the age of 77 at Frosinone, Italy. Born in Ruvo, Italy, October 2, 1737; professed in 1756; ordained in 1761. He was involved in the split over the Regolamento in 1780. He expanded the Redemptorists from the Papal States to beyond the Alps. In 1807 he was expelled from the Redemptorists for insubordination.

1874 VEN. EMMANUEL RIBERA died at the age of 63 at Naples. Born in Molfetta, Italy on March 8, 1811; professed in 1831; ordained in 1835. He was twice novice master of the Naples Province and was a popular confessor and spiritual director. His cause was introduced in Rome in 1925.

1953 NOVICE DANIEL McCLAFFERTY died at the age of 22 while stationed at Mount St. Clement’s College, DeSoto MO. Born in Butte, MT, August 17, 1931; invested with the habit, August 1, 1953; professed his vows privately on October 29, 1953, because he was suddenly stricken with cancer. He was

professed on his deathbed in Desloge Hospital, St. Louis. He is buried in Butte and was the first member of the Oakland Province to die. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Butte, MT.

1969 REV. CLEMENT WARTMAN died at the age of 65 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Wilmot, SD, January 22, 1904; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1927; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1932. He attended the Schola Major and obtained a doctorate in philosophy and a licentiate in theology. He was professor of Philosophy at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, 1936-1968, except for four years as a chaplain during World War II (1942-1946). His students considered him one of their best teachers. Died of a heart attack. 42 years professed; 37 years ordained. Orignally buried in the cemertery at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Moved in 1988 to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1970 REV. CHARLES HEING died at the age of 77 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Chicago, IL, February 4, 1893; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1914; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry,Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1919. He was rector in Okmulgee, OK, and Chicago, IL. During his life he was actively engaged in the deaf apostolate, to which he dedicated forty years giving missions, retreats, and other religious exercises. This was his great love in life. 56 years professed; 51 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Moved in 1988 to the Redemptorist Seminary, Liguori, MO.

1985 MOST REV. JUAN MANUEL LASSO DE LA VEGA Y MIRANDA was elected fifteenth superior general and rector major in Rome.

1999 REV. JOHN HENSGEN died at the age of 88 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in St. Louis, MO, Apr. 14, 1911; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1931; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1936. Known to many as “Butch”, Fr. Hensgen was a man of many talents and many appointments. He served as a teacher in the seminary, parish priest, missionary, and consultor. Fr. Hensgen served honorably as an army chaplain in World War II and was decorated with three medals for his ministry in the European, African, and Middle East theaters of operation. In his later years he transferred his nickname to his pet dog, “Butch

Jr”. 68 yrs. professed; 63 yrs. ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

NOVEMBER 9

1732 The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer was founded at Scala by St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori and five companions.

1875 The American Province was divided into the Baltimore and St. Louis Provinces. At the beginning, the St. Louis Province had four foundations: St. Louis, New Orleans, St. Michael’s Chicago, and Chatawa. Nicholas Jaeckel was the first provincial. The province consisted of thirty-four priests, twenty-one brothers, five professed students, and five novices.

1917 REV. DANIEL MULLANE died at the age of 58 at St. Gerard’s, San Antonio, TX. Born in New Orleans, LA, March 16, 1859; professed at Kansas City, MO, September 8, 1880; ordained at Ilchester, MD, March 7, 1885. He began his minor seminary in Baltimore, MD, and finished it in Chatawa, MS. He was pioneer superior in Denver, CO. Provincial (1898-1904), and delegate to general chapter in 1909. He built the seminary in DeSoto, MO. He was a sympathetic superior with a heart as large as his physique. He died as rector of St. Gerard’s, San Antonio, TX. 37 years professed; 32 years ordained. Buried in St. Alphonsus Church, New Orleans, LA.

1926 REV. PAUL CAHILL died at the age of 52 at Mount St. Clement’s College, DeSoto, MO. Born in New Orleans, LA, February 21, 1874; professed at Kirkwood, MO,August 22, 1894; ordained at Kansas City, MO, July 14, 1899. About a year after his ordination, he suffered an accident that almost cost him his life. He was a parish priest all of his active life. He was stationed in Fresno, CA, (1910-1912). He retired to DeSoto , MO in 1924 as an invalid.

32 years professed; 27 years ordained. Buried in St. Alphonsus Church, New Orleans, LA.

1947 The Foundation of St. Alphonsus (Liguori Mission House) Liguori, MO, was canonically established. The foundation, dedicated to the apostolate of the pen, had begun on October 23, 1947. The land formerly belonged to Col. Benjamin O’Fallon, a colorful Missourian of the early 1800’s. Rev. Donald Miller (I) was the first rector.

1998 The First Provincial Chapter of the Denver Province began at Harley Hotel, Earth City, MO. The principal tasks of the meeting were to approve the Ministerial Plan of the Province and to approve the first set of provincial statutes. The chapter ended November 13.

NOVEMBER 10

1996 REV. ORVILLE MAILLOUX died at the age of 80 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Fowler, IN, November 24, 1915; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1937; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 1, 1942. He spent his entire active life in the New Orleans Vice-Province, mainly as a mission and retreat preacher. He worked over thirty-five years as a Hispanic missionary, traveling the southwest, zealously ministering to the Spanish speaking in out-of-the-way places. In his last years, he received permission to minister out of San Diego, CA. 59 years professed; 54 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

NOVEMBER 11

1850 REV. BERNARD HAFKENSCHEID announced his appointment as provincial of the newly erected American Province in a letter from Bischemberg, Alsace.

1897 BROTHER MATTHIAS WILLGER died at the age of 20 at Mount St. Clement’s College, DeSoto, MO. Born in Chicago, IL, in 1877; privately professed at DeSoto, MO, July 31, 1897. He began the novitiate at “Rock” Church, St. Louis, MO, and continued it when the novitiate was moved to DeSoto, MO, in 1897. He contracted a severe cold which led to the tuberculosis that eventually claimed his life. Professed for a little over three months. Originally buried in the cemetery at Mt. St. Clement’s College, DeSoto, MO. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1959 BROTHER ANTHONY (JOHN) GEDEON died at the age of 92 at Liguori Mission House. Born at Metzenseifen, Hungary, April 12, 1867; professed at Kirkwood, MO, February 27, 1900. He came to the U.S. when he was eighteen and worked with his father in Pittsburgh, PA, to raise enough money to bring the rest of his family to the U.S. He was sent to Portland, OR, in 1922 to cook for the newly established minor seminary until 1927. He was an excellent cook and exemplary religious. He was a prayerful man and did

hidden acts of charity; he was always first to visit sick confreres. His hobby was to make rosaries. 59 years professed. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

NOVEMBER 12

1949 REV. GEORGE SUNDAY died at the age of 61 at Immaculate Conception, Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Detroit, MI, November 15, 1887; professed at Kansas City, MO. August 15, 1908; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 6, 1913. He anglicized his name from Sontag at the time of World War I. He was a parish priest and missionary. He was stationed in Portland (1918-1921). He was of an earnest and serious disposition and a good community man. He died from uremic poisoning. 41 years professed; 36 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Moved in 1988 to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1993 REV. VICTOR KREUTZER died at the age of 94 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Peru, IN, September 6, 1899; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1922; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 12, 1927. He was influenced to join the Redemptorists by a mission given at his home parish. He was a parish priest most of his life, but also served six years in the military during and after World War II (1941-1948). He was pastor and superior at St. Joseph’s Parish, Denver, CO. He was a steady and methodical parish priest, always reliable. He spent the last nine years of his life at the health care center. 71 years professed; 66 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

NOVEMBER 13

1944 REV. JAMES OTT died at the age of 72 at St. Michael’s Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Chicago, IL May 25, 1872; professed at Kirkwood, MO, September 8, 1893; ordained at Kansas City, MO, October 28, 1898. Most of his active life was spent in the two Chicago houses. He was fluent in German, fostered vocations, and never missed a wake or funeral of anyone he knew. He wore a continuous smile and avoided words that would offend. Kindness and humility were his trademarks. 51 years professed; 46 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL.

1965 BROTHER EDWARD (AUGUST) OLIVERI died at the age of 33 at Holy Redeemer, Oakland, CA. Born in Fresno, CA. March 2, 1932; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1953. He was a quiet man, but a grand person to live with in community. He died as the result of an auto accident. 12 years professed. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fresno, CA.

1987 REV. PHILIP O’CONNOR died at the age of 90 while stationed at St. Mary’s Assumption Parish, New Orleans, LA. Born in New Orleans, LA, December 8, 1896; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1917; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 10, 1922. He was a parish missionary for many years on the West Coast. He introduced the Perpetual Help Devotions in the Hawaiian Islands and also gave missions there. He was superior at New Orlean, LA. Vice-Gerent, and Consultor. He died at Memorial Hospital, Oconomowoc, WI. 70 years professed; 65 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptoroist Cemetery, Lacombe, LA.

NOVEMBER 14

1898 MOST REV. WILLIAM GROSS, C.SS.R., died at the age of 61 in Portland, OR. Born in Baltimore, MD, June 1, 1837; professed at Annapolis, MD, March 2, 1858; ordained at Baltimore, MD, April 1, 1865. He introduced the Redemptorists into Portland, OR. He was consecrated Bishop of Savannah, Georgia, April 27, 1873 and became Archbishop of Oregon City (later: Portland, OR), February 1, 1885. He is buried, at his request, with his confreres in Baltimore.

1899 REV. ALFRED DeHAM died at the age of 69 at St. Mary’s Assumption Parish, New Orleans, LA. Born in Ghent, Belgium, September 4, 1830; professed at Annapolis, MD, March 2, 1858; ordained there, March 21, 1863. Legend has it that he recovered from Yellow Fever in obedience to his superior’s (Rev. John Duffy) command and resumed work in Notre Dame Church, New Orleans. LA. A quiet man, he was much respected by his confreres. 41 years professed; 36 years ordained. Buried in St. Mary’s Church, New Orleans, LA.

1924 REV. JOSEPH WUEST died at the age of 90 at Ilchester, MD. He compiled the Annales Congregationis SS. Redemptoris Provinciae Americae in ten volumes. He also edited Collectio Rerum Liturgicarum, later translated into English and called Matters Liturgical.

1962 BROTHER ADOLPH WOLLACK died at the age of 77 at St. Joseph’s College, Edgerton WI. Born in Franklin, WI, December 13, 1884; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 15, 1918. He was an excellent woodworker. He spent religious life mostly in Kirkwood, MO, and Edgerton, WI. 44 years professed. Originally buried, first of two, in the cemetery at St. Joseph’ College, Edgerton, WI. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL.

1968 BROTHER DANIEL (CLARENCE) KEHOE died at the age of 75 at Villa Redeemer, Glenview, IL. Born in Stathcone, Ontario, Canada, February 22, 1893; professed at DeSoto, MO, February 2, 1947. He entered the Congregation when he was fifty-three years old and readily adjusted. He was a man of prayer and had a deep sense of responsibility to God, the Congregation, and to himself. He died of cancer. 21 years professed. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL.

1978 REV. THOMAS TOBIN died at the age of 64 at Holy Name Parish, Omaha, NB. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, March 11, 1914; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1935; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1940. He was a Philosophy teacher at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. He pioneered in Liguori and later became rector there. He began publication of Scrupulous Anonymous. He actively engaged in the apostolate to divorced Catholics and marriage counseling. He was superior in Waterford, WI and Midland, MI. He died suddenly. 43 years professed; 38 years ordained. Buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MI.

2005 BROTHER JOHN (GABRIEL) MEDIC died at the age of 88 at St Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Auburn, IL, October 31, 1917; professed at DeSoto, MO, February 2, 1935. He was affectionately known as “Gabe” among the confreres. Gabe’s parents died when he was very young and he was raised in an orphanage, the Catholic Children’s Home, in Alton, IL The Redemptorists became his one and only family. In the first ten years of Brother Gabe’s Redemptorist life he ministered in the communities of the Midwest. The second twenty years was spent along the Amazon River in the Brazilian Missions. In last twenty-five years, Gabe was the Postmaster at Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO. Brother Gabe was a man of dedication and duty. He never missed a day of work or a moment of prayer. 70 years professed. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1892 BROTHER CAJETAN (ANDREW) SCHWALB died at the age of 45 at St. Michael’s Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Buffalo, NY, December 18, 1846; professed at Annapolis, MD, September 1, 1870. He volunteered for the St. Louis Province in 1877 and spent most of his religious life in St. Louis, MO, and Chicago, IL. 22 years professed. Buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

1941 REV. DONALD CORRIGAN was appointed to begin work among African Americans in St. Louis, MO, at St. Clement’s Chapel within St. Alphonsus “Rock” Parish. A school was opened in September, 1941, with the Oblate Sisters in charge. Mass was discontinued there in 1945; the school was closed in June 1948.

1959 REV. GEORGE HYNES died at the age of 70 at Holy Redeemer, Detroit, MI. Born in St. Louis, MO, April 30, 1889; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1911; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1916. He was stationed in Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Fresno, CA, in the 1920’s. He served as a parish priest all of his active ministry. He was a great devotee of physical exercise and was especially devoted to the sick. He was a good, simple individual who could, in his own way, confound even the wisest and did on occasions. 48 years professed; 43 years ordained. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Detroit, MI.

1967 REV. FRANCIS FAGEN died at the age of 72 at St. Alphonsus, Grand Rapids, MI. Born in Chicago, IL, June 25, 1895; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1918; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1923. During his life, he served in many capacities: teacher in the minor seminary; parish priest, rector in Wichita, KS, Kansas City, MO, Chicago, IL; and 11th Provincial of the St. Louis Province (1942-1950). The Brazilian Mission was begun during his term of office. He was a missionary out of Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Seattle WA, from 1929-1936, and a member of the first missionary team to the Hawaiian Islands in 1935. He was the eternal optimist. In his days as parish priest, he was a popular confessor; very devoted

to the sick. Heart trouble plagued him in his last years; died suddenly. 49 years professed; 44 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL.

1966 The Foundation of Blessed John Neumann at Clinton, Iowa, was canonically established. It replaced the DeSoto, MO, novitiate. The clerical novices moved there on October 13, 1966, and the brother novices came on February 15, 1967. Rev. Thomas Landers was the first superior and novice master. Both novitiates were transferred to Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI on September 1, 1968 and the foundation was suppressed on September 28, 1972.

1972 REV. FRANCIS ROMER died at the age of 89 at St. Alphonsus Parish, San Leandro. CA. Born in Ottumwa, IA, on February 2, 1883; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1906; ordained at St. Louis, MO, June 28, 1911. He was considered the Patriarch of the Oakland Province and the first member of the province who studied in Rome. He taught church history at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. He was the first superior at Oakland, CA. He served as a military chaplain during World War I. He was also the province chronicler for a number of years. He was a mission preacher during the 1930’s out of Oakland and Whittier, CA, before becoming superior in Coeur d’Alene, ID. He spent his last years in San Leandro, CA. He was a gentleman to the last. 66 years professed; 61 years ordained. Buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, the Sacred Heart Section in Hayward, CA, (Near Oakland)

NOVEMBER 18

1894 The Foundation of St. Joseph’s Parish was canonically established at Denver; Co, it had begun on August 18, 1894. Bishop Matz, trying to save St. Joseph’s from financial ruin after the panic of 1893, appealed to the Redemptorists to take over the parish. The parish had been organized in November, 1883 and the present church built in 1888. Rev. Daniel Mullane was the first superior.

NOVEMBER 19

1897 REV. FRANCIS KRUTIL died at the age of 82 at Littau, Austria. Worked in the U.S. from 1843 until 1859; he was the first Redemptorist to preach

Bohemian missions in America. It is said that he preached in eleven languages and heard confessions in thirteen!

1973 REV. THOMAS McDONOUGH died at the age of 70 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in St. Louis, MO, October 9, 1903; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1925; ordained at Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1930. His early years were spent on the West Coast as a parish priest and a teacher in the minor seminary. He returned to the Midwest in 1940. He presided over a non-sectarian, floating parish in New Orleans, LA, as port chaplain for twenty-five years. He was National Secretary of the Apostleship of the Sea for many years and coordinated the work of eighty-three port chaplains in the U.S. Seamen from many nations loved and respected him for his work. He died from lung cancer. 48 years professed; 43 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1983 REV. JOHN FRANCIS MURPHY died at the age of 82 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in St. Louis, MO, April 7, 1901; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1929; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1934. He was a parish priest and mission preacher and also served as chaplain in World War II (1942-1945). He was “common as an old shoe,” but as genuine as the purest gold. Affectionately known as “Bucket-Head,” he was a kind and understanding confrere. At the end of his life he said: “I’ve been a Redemptorist a long time and never regretted one day of it.” 54 years professed; 49 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1984 The Vice-Province of Extra Patriam was established as a separated entity from the Saigon Province. It is a personal province of Vietnamese speakers based in the United States.

1994 REV. LOUIS MILLER died at the age of 81 while stationed at Liguori Mission House, Liguori, MO. Born in Grand Rapids, MI, April 11, 1913; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1934; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1939. The youngest of the “Miller Brothers,” he served as an army chaplain in New Guinea during World War II, and later in Korea. Most of his active life he worked as a retreat preacher in great demand by priests and religious. He shared in the writing apostolate all his life by magazine articles and editorials, pamphlets, etc. He served as editor of the Liguorian magazine (1961-1977). He also served at Matese, MO, and

was rector of the Ferguson, MO, novitiate. Devoted to social justice issues, he served on the St. Louis Archdiocesan Commission on Human Rights, whose members remember him as “a steady and gentle defender of the dignity of all.” To know him was to love him: saintly, humorous, unassuming, wise, interested in all. Died suddenly. 60 years professed; 55 years ordained. Buried with his three brothers and one sister at the Redemptorist Seminary, Liguori, MO.

NOVEMBER 20

1917 REV. PETER KIERFORF died at the age of 42 at St. Joseph’s Parish, Denver, CA. Born in Chicago, IL,June 4, 1875; professed at Kirkwood, MO, August 22, 1894; ordained at Kansas City, MO, July 14, 1899. He taught in the minor seminary after he finished dogmatic theology and studied moral theology privately. He then taught moral theology and philosophy in the major seminary. He was a parish priest for a while before being sent to Denver, CO, in 1907 for health reasons. His zeal often overtaxed his frail health. 23 years professed; 18 years ordained. Buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

1921 BROTHER WENCESLAUS (RUDOLPH) BORUTA died at the age of 55 at St. Joseph’s College, Kirkwood, MO. Born in Halbthurm, Hungary, February 20, 1866; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1911. His entire religious life was spent in service at the minor seminary, the novitiate, and the major seminary. He was a steady and conscientious worker, and a man of prayer. 10 years professed. 1962 BROTHER WILLIAM KUHN died at the age of 79 at Holy Redeemer, Portland OR. Born in Ethol, Bavaria, May 16, 1883; professed at Gars, Germany, September 8, 1908. He was a member of the Munich Province when the St. Louis Provincial brought him to America on the way back from the General Chapter of 1909. He was sent to the Oakland Vice- Province and stationed in Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Great Falls, MT. He was a fine sacristan and an inspiration to many future Redemptorists.

He introduced Perpetual Help services at St. Alphonsus in 1930. He was affectionately known as “Ima” to his confreres. 59 years professed; 54 years ordained. He served as parish priest and mission preacher in the Midwest, but also for a time in Coeur d’Alene, ID. He was especially devoted to the sick. 1957 REV. THOMAS PALMER died at the age of 75 at St. Alphonsus Parish (Roack), St. Louis. Born in Shipman, IL, August 5, 1882; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1901; ordained at St. Louis, MO, July 4, 1906. He taught philosophy in DeSoto , MO and Oconomowoc, WI. He was one of the founders of the Liguorian. He was rector in Kirkwood, MO; 7th Provincial of the St. Louis Province (1933-1942); Provincial Consultor. A fine Latin scholar, he would compose Latin poems when traveling. His outstanding virtue was charity. One confrere said of him: “though I knew him for sixty years, I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone” (even during his provincial years). In the last years of his life, he suffered a great deal from diabetes.

1956 REV. EUGENE BUHLER died at the age of 71 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Kansas City, MO. Born in New Orleans, LA, April 14, 1885; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1903; ordained at St. Louis, MO, May 20, 1908. He was rector in Kansas City, MO, Omaha, NE, Detroit, MI and Kirkwood, MO, as well as teacher and socius at the Kirkwood, MO, for nine years. He had “the know-how” in financial matters and in construction,

evidenced especially in Omaha, NE, Kansas City, MO, and Detroit, MI. Among the confreres, he was known as one of the “Wise Men” who turned up yearly in New Orleans, LA, around January 6th. He was an excellent musician and capable organist. He took a special delight in directing choirs. Died on the feast of St. Cecilia, patroness of music. 53 years professed; 48 years ordained. 1970 REV. RICHARD DOLEN died at the age of 73 at St. Alphonsus Parish, San Leandro, CA. He was known as “Archie” to his close friends and the students at Oakland, CA, where he served many years as hospital chaplain for the Alameda County Hospital. 1993 REV. ALPHONSE ABADIE died at the age of 77 at New Orleans Vice-Provincial Residence, New Orleans, LA. Born in New Orleans, LA, December 11, 1915; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1937; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, July 1, 1942. He was affectionately nicknamed “Phonsie.” He served in Brazil for ten years, where he was superior at Codajaz. After returning to the U.S., he was a parish priest for most of his life, superior at Baton Rouge, LA, St. Gerard’s (San Antonio, TX), and Crowley, LA. He was appointed Vice-Provincial of New Orleans in 1967, and was the first elected Vice-Provincial in 1969; he was re-elected in 1972. He was a gentle and humble person, a peacemaker. His years as major superior were difficult for him but he bore them peacefully. He enjoyed serving others and making them happy. 56 years professed; 51 years ordained. 1945 BROTHER OTTO (GEORGE) HEIGL died at the age of 65 at St. Michael’s Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Unterlapp, Bavaria, June 8, 1880; professed at Gars, Germany, September 8, 1903. He volunteered for America in 1912. After a short stay at Kirkwood, MO, he was assigned to St. Michael’s Parish, Chicago, IL, where he served as sacristan for thirty-three years. His deportment in and around the altar exemplified his devotion to the Blessed

1971 REV. EUGENE WEHNER died at the age of 76 at St. Alphonsus Parish (Rock), St. Louis, MO. Born in St. Louis, MO, July 26, 1895; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 3, 1920; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, July 2, 1925. Most of his priestly life was spent in the service of the Spanish-speaking people. He worked in the Oakland Province at Whittier, CA, Portland, OR, Coeur d’Alene, ID, Perpetual Help, in San Antonio, TX, and was rector in Great Falls, MT. He was especially devoted to the work of the confessional. He died in an ambulance on the way to Oconomowoc from St. Louis. 51 years professed; 46 years ordained. 1973 REV. EDWARD KARTHEISER died at the age of 81 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Chicago, IL, January 17, 1892; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1916; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, May 29, 1921. The early days of his priesthood were spent on the West Coast as a professor in the minor seminary at Portland, OR, and as a parish missionary. He returned to the Midwest in 1927 serving as parish priest, missionary and novice master of the second novitiate for nine years. 1948 BROTHER EDWARD (MELVIN) MORAN died at the age of 63 at St. Thomas, Coeur d’Alene ID. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, September 20, 1885; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1925. Most of his religious life was spent in the Vice-Province of Oakland serving in Fresno, CA, Portland, OR, and Coeur d’Alene, ID. 23 years professed. 1966 BROTHER VINCENT (EDWARD) LAMBERT died at the age of 73 at St. Michael’s Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Steward, MN, March 12, 1893;

professed at Glenview, IL, August 2, 1941. He was forty-five years old when he entered the Congregation. He spent his temporary profession as sacristan in Seattle, WA. After that he served in the St. Louis Province in various posts. A quiet and unassuming man, he did his work efficiently and without fanfare.

1918 REV. FRANCIS X. LEPSA died at the age of 37 at Mount St. Clement’s College, DeSoto, MO, Born near La Crosse, WI, November 9, 1881; professed at Kansas City, MO, September 29, 1901; ordained at St. Louis, MO, July 4, 1906. He intended to become a diocesan priest but was influenced to join the Congregation after reading the life of St. John Neumann. He preached missions in English and Bohemian and translated the “mission book” into Bohemian. He contracted pneumonia while giving a mission in Pocahontas, Iowa, and died there. 17 years professed; 12 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at St. Joseph’s College, Kirkwood, MO. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1954 The Foundation of St. Joseph’s College at Edgerton, WI, was canonically established. The community left the minor seminary at Kirkwood, MO, on July 7, 1959 and the first Mass was celebrated in Edgerton, WI, the next day. The minor seminary was solemnly dedicated on October 11, 1959. It ceased as a minor seminary on May 24, 1980 and the minor seminary was transferred to St. Henry’s Seminary, Belleville, II, July 15. The foundation was suppressed on June 25, 1986.

1975 REV. VINCENT MOREIRA died in Belem, Brazil at the age of 34 while stationed at Nossa Senhora de Aparecida, Manaus, Brazil. Born in Alcantaras, Brazil, August 21, 1938; professed at Pindamonhangaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, February 2, 1963; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, June 27, 1968. He contracted pneumonia in March, 1975 and complications eventually led to his death. Buried buried in Manaus.12 years professed; 7 years ordained. 1948 The Foundation of Our Mother of Perpetual Help at Xang-Ming was begun. It was the first foundation in Thailand and was abandoned January 1, 1957. Rev. Charles Duhart was the first superior.

1959 REV. MARSHALL GHERMAN died at the age of 54 while stationed at St. Gerard’s, Pine City, MN. Born in DeSoto, MO, January 9, 1905; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1926; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, June 29, 1931. His active life was directed mainly to the Spanish-speaking, especially in Texas and North Dakota. His charity and understanding made him an effective minister who never spared himself. He suffered from cancer; died at St. John’s Hospital, St. Louis. 33 years professed; 28 years ordained. Originally buried in the cemetery at Mt. St. Clement’s College, DeSoto, MO. Moved to the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.

1978 REV. WILLIAM RENNER died at the age of 38 while stationed at Holy Redeemer College, Waterford, WI Born in Wichita, KS,, November 14, 1940; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 2, 1961; ordained at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI, June 22, 1966. A cancerous brain tumor appeared shortly after his ordination. He spent much time in and out of hospitals after that. Despite his severe handicap, he devoted himself to the needs of the community especially working in the library book bindery. Died at Immaculate Conception, Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. 17 years professed; 12 years ordained. Buried in Calvary Cemetery, Wichita, KS.

1980 REV. HENRY SUTTON died at the age of 88 at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Oconomowoc, WI. Born in Milwaukee, WI, June 17, 1892; professed at Kansas City, MO, August 15, 1911; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, July 1, 1916. His active life covered many areas: teacher in minor seminary, mission preaching, military chaplain during World War II, and rector. He served for a time in Coeur d’Alene, ID. He was instrumental in bringing the Redemptorists to Japan. His best known quality was his “magnificence” in style: he did everything in a big way. He was a distinctive personality who used his talents for God, the Church, and Congregation. 69 years professed; 64 years ordained. 1981 REV. MAURICE KENNEDY died at the age of 85 at St. Mary’s Assumption Parish, New Orleans, LA. Born in New Orleans, LA, December 28, 1895; professed at DeSoto, MO,August 2, 1916; ordained at Immaculate Conception Semianry, Oconomowoc, WI, May 29, 1921. He was known as “Mick” among the confreres. He served as a mission preacher out of Whittier, CA, (1933-1939). After teaching at Kirkwood, MO, he spent the rest of his active life as a parish missionary in the West and Midwest. He composed the song “Three Cheers for C.Ss.R.” after the Notre Dame Victory March. He lived his life with gusto. 65 years professed; 60 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Lacombe, LA.

NOVEMBER 27

1911 VERY REV. WILLIAM VAN ROSSUM, Consultor General, was made a Cardinal of the Church by Pope St. Pius X in Rome. His main work was as prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. He was consecrated Bishop with the title of Archbishop by Pope Benedict XV on May 19, 1918. He exerted great influence in Vatican policy.

NOVEMBER 28

1993 The Nigerian Mission which began September 30, 1987 was raised to the status of a “Region” by the Oakland Province and the Superior General, Fr. Juan Lasso de la Vega. Fr. Bill Cleary was elected the first Regional Superior along with Fr. William Peterson, Vicar and Fr. Pat Scott, Consultor. The Region consisted of 23 professed members: 4 American, 5 Irish, 1 Polish, and 13 Nigerian, and 7 novices and 13 pre-novices.

NOVEMBER 29

1968 MOST REV. WILLIAM G. GAUDREAU died at the age of 71 at St. Alphonsus College, Suffield, Connecticut. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, September 24, 1897; professed in 1922; ordained in 1927. He had been the twelfth superior general and rector major, the first American to hold this position. 46 years professed; 41 years ordained.

NOVEMBER 30

1944 The Foundation of St. George was canonically established at Cooperstown, ND. Began on May 1, 1944. It was called St. Gerard’s Mission House and

served as a mission center with a parish attached. Rev. Anthony Huber was the first superior.

1944 The Foundation of St. Gerard Majella Parish was canonically established at Baton Rouge, LA. Began on July 26, 1944. Rev. Paul Baudry was the first superior.

1949 REV. AUGUST PREGENZER died at the age of 70 at St. Alphonsus Parish, Chicago, IL. Born in Chicago, IL, April 25, 1879; professed at DeSoto, MO, August 15, 1898; ordained at DeSoto, MO,, June 19, 1903. He pioneered in Coeur d’Alene, ID, in 1914 and labored there and as a missionary in Idaho and Washington until 1918. He was always willing to give a helping hand and was a man of strong opinions with a unique way of expressing them. 51 years professed; 46 years ordained. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Glenview, IL.

1952 The New Orleans Vice-Province was canonically established. It embraced the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama. Rev. Raymond J. Schmitt was the first Vice-Provincial.

1952 The Oakland Province was canonically established. It embraced the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. Rev. Robert Elliott was the first provincial and took up residence in Livermore. The personnel consisted of 79 priests, 13 brothers, 10 professed students, 3 novices and 52 minor seminary students.

2005 BROTHER JOHN BOSCO (ROBERT) BROWN died at the age of 82 at St. Clement Health Care Center, Liguori, MO. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, November 25, 1923; professed at Glenview, IL, October 16, 1942. Brother John Bosco came to the Redemptorists from the Hope Haven Trades and Agricultural School. Raised in various orphanages from infancy, he never knew his parents or family. John Bosco spent most of his religious life in the South. He loved photography, gardening, astronomy, and drinking strong chicory coffee. John Bosco’s special love was taking care of the grounds at Holy Redeemer College in Lacombe, LA. He was a gentle, loving man who lived his religious commitment to the fullest. 63 years professed. Buried in the Redemptorist Cemetery, Liguori, MO.
