CAMPUS CONCERTS WILL BE HOMECOMING FOR VIOLINIST MALLORY

David Mallory who will be the featured soloist when the Cal Poly Chamber Orchestra gives its first concerts of the 1970~71 campus music season Thursday and Friday (Nov 12-13) is well-known to concert goers in the Central Coast area Presently a member of the Chico State College faculty Mallory grew up in the San Luis Obispo ar~a studied under Lucien Morrison and was a soloist with the San Luis Obispo County S~phony middot

Mallory is scheduled to join the 3Q-member Cal Poly orchestra for its performance of J S Bachs Violin Concerto in A Minor during the programs being planned for the Cal Poly Theater The Thursday concert scheduled as part of the College Hour Concert series will start at 11 am and the Friday program at 830pm Admission will be free and the public is invited to attend either or bth o~ the programs _

Mallory is a graduate of San Francisco State College and Indiana University ~here he earned his bachelors and masters degrees in music Before assuming his teaching duties at Chico State earlier this year he taught at Clarion St~te College in Pennsylvania and studied v~olin under such well-known teachers as Harry Farbman Frank Houser and Louis Kaufman all former concertmasters of major symphony orchestras

A music teacher and consultant fo~ the Lucia Mar School District in the Arroyo Grande area between 1961 and 1965 Mallory is himself an experienced violinist He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra the 7th Army ~ymphony the Henry Mancini Orchestra the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra and numerous community orchestras in the San Francisco area

Also programmed for the Nov 12-13 concerts at Cal Poly a~cording to Clifton E Swanson (Music Department) who ~middotconductor of the Chamber Orchestra are Beethovens Egmont Overture Fugue for a Small Orchestra and Halloween by Charles Ives and Ralph Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves Swanson said Haydns Symphony No 52 in C minor will be added to the program for the Friday evening concert

Both performances are being staged by the college Music Department

RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED BY HEAD OF SOIL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Logan S Carter the man who established the Cal Poly Soil middotScience Department of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources will retire on Jan 1 1971 President Robert E Kennedy announced that Curtis Dean Piper a member of the college faculty since 1964 will become head of the department on that date

Dr Carter joined the Cal Poly faculty in 1947 after 12 years of government service with the United States Department of Agriculture in the Soil Conservation Service He became a teacher because his 12 years of government work revealed the need for more trained people in soil science

The retiring department head has viewed a major growth in the soil science program at Cal Poly In 1947 he was the total staff and the laboratory was housed in the basement of the 1901 structure variously identified as the domestic arts building the agricultural education building and currently as an architecture laboratory Today there are 6 facul~y members instructing courses in soil science and 81 majors in the program The Soil Science Department is housed in a wing of the Science Building and is served by three laboratories and three dual purpose rooms

In 1968 Dr Carter developed and initiated Cal Polys natural resources management degree program which this year has 161 majors and which will gain department status on Jan 1 Marvin J Whalls a member of the Soil Science Department faculty since 1968 will be acting head of the new department bull

The retiring Cal Poly department head was named an honorary state farmer by the California Association of Future Farmers of America in 1959 in recognition of his work in encouraging land judging activities among FFA chapters In 1966 he was named a fellow of the Soil Conservation Society of America in recognition of his contribution to the science and art of good land use

Dr Carter is a member of Alpha Zeta national honorary and service fraternity for college and university agricultural students Beta Beta Beta biological sciences honorary fraternity Mu Beta Beta 4-H fraternity Phi Sigma biological sciences fraternity Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honorary fraternity the Range Management Society Soil Conservation Society of America and the Soil Science Society

The retiring department head was raised on a general livestock farm near Oak Grove Ark and on a fruit ranch at Fresno He earned his BS degree in agriculture at Oregon State University in 1930 and his doctorate at Michigan State University in 1934

A member of the soil science faculty at Cal Poly for the past six years Dr Piper formerly was a farm operator and college food service director Just before moving to Cal Poly he was an instructor in research and teaching at Michigan State University Dr Piper also has been a consultant to the Peace Corps in overseas programs and has coordinated an internship program for the Peace Corps at Cal Poly for the past year

The newly-appointed department head earned his bachelors degree at W J Bryan College in Dayton Tenn in 1953 and completed his masters and doctors degree studies at Michigan State in 1959 and 1967 respectively middot

TRENDS IN CALIFORNIA HIGHER EDUCATION WILL BE TOPIC

Trends in California Higher Education will be the topic when James C Stone of University of California at Berkeley addresses a meeting sponsored by the Education Department at 3 pm Friday (Nov 13) in AgEngr-123 Faculty staff and students are invited Dr Stone is a professor of higher education at the campus in Berkeley

LAW AND ORDER STRESSED BY TRUSTEE LUCKMAN

The academic world is now in the dark middotbefore the dawn according to a member of the Board of Trustees of the California State Colleges Internationally-known architect businessman and public servant Charles Luckman told a primarily student audience of some 500 that he has great hope for a healing of the academic world Luckman spoke in the Cal Poly Theater on the topic A Trustee Looks at Higher Education

Acknowledging that I seem to have been marching to a different drum these recent years than many trustees and regents Luckman said I have frequently been wrong but never in doubt He referred to 10 years of service on the state college Board of Trustees during which his firm the fifth largest architectural firm in the world has been the only one in the state not permitted to do any work on any of the California State College campuses

I care Luckman stressed and shared with the audience his concern for the disrespect shown toward law and order He called the bombings of Bank of America branches a terrifying example of uninformed visciousness in view of the fact that the two top executives of the bank are among the nations most enlightened business leaders

Luckman warned students that they must not permit themselves to be led by a few egomaniacs sick with their personal ambitions and frustrations He said For this underlying thesis of law breaking can never be likened or linked to academic freedom All of us who are a part of higher education must middotbe devoted to the cause of academic freedom but equally so none of us should tolerate academic license with its concomitant of law breaking

Without the false guise of academic freedom he said It is my strong personal conviction that we who have the responsibility for governance in higher education must never permit the willful breaking of laws on our campuses we must not permit this academic license to interfere with the orderly process of education If we are not willing to teach respect for the law on our campuses how can we expect our students in later life to respect the laws which since the days of the Magna Carta have been the very foundation of a free society

All of us are obligated to the people who support our institutions of higher learnings to penalize those individuals who would hand select those laws which they will obey and those which they will break all under the false guise of academic freedom

Luckmans views on other topics included

Appropriate means of dissent - On the other hand protests marches speeches and demonstrations in any form which may seem appropriate or effective in dramatizing the need for more Civil Rights a better economic situation~ and the removal of discrimination must be considered proper -- so long as they are peaceful -- so long as they do not interfere with other Americans legitimate activities In contrast rioting burning and looting must be regarded as willful violation of civil law and proportionate punishment must be provided

Freedom - Academic freedom means freedom from interference not freedom from law Freedom of the press means freedom to say not freedom to do

Discipline - The proper response to such acts is to expel students and terminate faculty members who participate in such events As a College Trustee it is my conviction that when such things as property damage interference with the rights of others on the campus or physical violence are involved the colleges and universities must state in no uncertain terms that participation in these events will subject students to expulsion and faculty members to termination

Due process - Should not be used to stall or prevent justice

Faculty tenure - A guarantee of faculty rights to speak freely but not as a protective shield against unlawful actions

Racism - He criticized the University of California Academic Senates support of Angela Davis and termed hastily-implemented black studies programs racism and separatism at its ugliest Luckman supported help for all minorities and proposed Schools of Remedial Studies In such schools he said blacks browns and whites could move forward together toward equal opportunities

Generation Gap - The older generations owe the younger generation love protection to a point and respect -- when they deserve it We do not owe them our souls our privacy our whole lives -- and above all we do not owe them immunity from our mistakes or their own

Authority - Parents teachers and others need to use firm authority Faculty should stop playing chicken he said and rioters -- either student or faculty-- should be met with expulsion

Luckman indicated that new disciplinary procedures in the state college system would help authorities to act against revolutionaries He gave several examples of financial strains placed upon higher education as a consequence of campus unrest and he noted that student leaders now meeting with the trustees appear to be more decent and thoughtful but just as vigorous as activist students of previous years

Speaking of his role as a trustee Luckman said I want to listen to students faculty administrators citizens -- to all who accept the premise that decency and divergent views are not incompatible to all who accept the premise that they do make a proper framework for objective inquiry

We are seeking answers he said all we demand is that non-violence be the means to these ends

FUNDS FOR OVERSEAS TRAVEL ALLOCATED APPLICATIONS DUE BY NOV 16

President Robert E Kennedy has approved allocation of funds for special overseas travel grants and for travel grants to faculty of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources for visits to overseas projects

Grants totaling $13000 may be awarded to faculty from the total college in accordance with the provisions of Administrative Bulletin 69-3 Grants totaling $9000 may be awarded to faculty of the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources in accordance with provisions of Administrative Bulletin 69-4

Deadline dates for applications for travel during the 1970 Christmas holiday period have been set at Nov 16 for both grant programs Application forms for the former may be obtained by visiting or telephoning the Office of International Education (Adm-133 546-2147) Application forms for the latter are available in the Office of the Dean School of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Erhart Ag-140 546-2161)

Frank Sylvester regional director Pacific Southwest Region Bureau of Outdoor Recreation who spoke on campus Oct 28 was the first of six authorities in public recreation who will meet with Cal Poly natural resources management majors during the Fall Quarter Sylvester met with the Natural Resources Club and visited classrooms and met individually with students during the day

PERFORMANCES OF ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN PLANNED NOV 19 20 21

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is not an ominous statement of doom but the title of a dramatic play by Tom Stoppard scheduled to be produced by the Speech Department on Nov 19 20 and 21 Inspired by William Shakespeares Hamlet the Stoppard drama will be the first in a series of three plays to be produced by the department this year Curtain time will be 830 pm each evening in the Cal Poly Theater

J Murray Smith (Speech Department) a member of the Cal Poly faculty for 10 years who formerly worked as a director at the famed Pasadena Playhouse and at the Civic Theater in Denver is directing rehearsals for the production

Tickets for the three performances of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead are available to both students and the general public Priced at $2 for adults $1 for students and 50 cents for children under 12 years they may be purchased at the Speech Department office English-206 Season tickets including admission to one performance of each of the three productions scheduled during the year are $425 each They may also be purchased at the Speech Department Office

Following the Candlelight Procession is the permiere of Fantasy on Parade the highshylight of Disneylands holiday season With more than 600 participants Fantasy on Parade brings to life such famous Disney characters as Sleeping Beauty Donald Duck Mickey Goofy Pluto and Mr Toad in a happy colorful parade at 200 and 900 pm daily

CHINCHILLA SHOW SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

Cal Poly faculty staff and students as well as residents of the San Luis Obispo area will have an opportunity to view 400 chinchillas of various types in a show to be held in Agricultural Engineering Shops 6 and 7 on Saturday and Sunday (Nov 14-15) The Cal Poly Chapter of the California Young Farmers will host the show conducted by the Empress Chinchilla Breeders of California

Judging of the entries by more than 100 exhibitors from most of the Western United States will begin at 10 am on Saturday and continue beginning at 10 am on Sunday Six different classes of competition will be offered in the show Admission will be free

VARSITY GRIDDERS WILL JOURNEY TO MEET CAL STATE FULLERTON TITANS

All the marbles will be on the line Thursday (Nov 12) when Coach Joe Harpers varsity footballers journey to Anaheim for an encounter with the titans of California State College at Fullerton One of the teams will be alone atop California Collegiate Athletic Association standings when the game billed for an 8 middotpm start in Anaheim St~dium is over Both are undefeated in CCAA play this fall

The Mustangs used an open date last weekend to let some of the bruises of a rugged campaign heal and begin preparation for the CSCF contest They presently own a 5-2 won-lost mark overall this fall and are 1-0 in CCAA action Cal State Fullerton in the midst of its first season of intercollegiate football has a 6-1-1 won-lost-tied mark for the season and is 2-0 in league play

The only athletic competition on campus this week finds the Mustang varsity water polo team closing its dual match season for 1970 with a pair of home encounters Both slated for the swimming pool adjacent to the Mens Physical Education Building they find the charges of coach Dick Anderson hosting University of California at Riverside on Friday (Nov 13) and Monterey Peninsula College on Saturday (Nov 14) Game time on Friday will be 3 pm Saturdays contest will begin at 10 am

HAVENS CONCERT SLATED THURSDAY EVENING

Tickets are now available for the Thursday night (Nov 12) performance of Richie Havens the 29-year-old blues singer who gained coast-to-coast recognition ~ith an outstanding performance in Woodstock Havens will appear in the Mens Gymnasium at 8 pm

The Assemblies Committee of Cal Polys Associated Students Inc sponsoring organization of the concert has set ticket prices for general admission at $250 for ASI card holders $350 for all others Tickets for Thursday evenings concert at Cal Poly may be purchased in advance at the Temporary College Union on campus

Richie Havens unique and exciting singing style has prompted the recording of four phonograph albums Mixed Bag Somethins Else Again middotstonehenge and 1983 Personal appearances made by Havens have included in addition to the festival at Woodstock NY the Tonight Show on television and Carnegie Hall Most recently Havens was judged winner of the International Song Festival of South America

Richard C Carlston (Welding and Metallurgical Engineering Department) has received an academic year extension grant from the National Science Foundation The grant will make it possible for Dr Carlston to continue research on marine corrosion which he started at the University of Miami Institute for Marine Science last summer

Barton C Olsen (History Department) has just been notified that he has been appointed to a two-year term on the National Sites Committee of the Organization of American Historians The OAH is a major national organization and its National Sites Committee serves as an important instrument in studying and preserving historical sites in America Dr Olsenbulls appointment was announced by OAH President David Potter

Francis Hendricks (School of Architecture and Environmental Design) is author of a paper published in the August 1970 issue of Ekistics an international journal for architects and town planners The article titled 11 Concepts of Environmental Quality Standards Based on Life Stylesbullbull was a joint effort of Hendricks and Malcolm McNair of University of North Carolina

J Mac McRobbie (Head of Industrial Technology Department) took part in the third annual convention of the National Association of Industrial Technology at Kansas State College Pittsburgh Kans Oct 22-24 Some 400 industrial technology program educators and students from throughout the U S attended the event Dr McRobbie was vice president of NAIT during 1969-70

Robin Lake and J Murray Smith (both Speech Department) participated in the Fall Conference of the American Educational Theatre Associationbulls Southern California Division at Claremont College Oct 23-25 Movement and discipline techniques for the actor and a street people drama in which the audience took part were presented during the gathering

Robert E Burton (History Department) presented a paper titled 11Perspectives of Twentieth Century Oregon Politics 11

at the lOth Annual Meeting of the Western History Association in Reno Nev last month Dr Burtonbulls paper centered on an historical analysis of political patterns which have been characteristic of Oregon politics from the turn of the century to the present

WORKSHOP FOR TYPOGRAPHERS WILL BE SATURDAY

A photomechanical workshop for typographic supervisors and technicians from the western United States will be hosted by the Cal Poly Graphic Communications Department on Saturday (Nov 14) The workshop is being presented by the Western Typographers Association and the International Typographic Composition Association In addition the Eastman Kodak Company will provide representatives technicians and materials for the one-day event

Purpose of the workshop is to update knowledge and skills in new photomechanical products and techniques based on the increasing reliance on photographic methods in the typographic industry In printing photomechanics refers to the film and paper output of cameras and photolettering and phQtotypesetting equipment

Some 60 owners supervisors and technicians from firms throughout the Western United States are expected to attend the sessions in the Graphic Arts Building

TELEVISION PROGRAM WILL FEATURE OAKLAND PERFORMANCE OF MUSTANG MARCHING BAND

Cal Polys 124-member Mustang Marching Band will be featured in a 15~inute program scheduled during the 5 to 530 pm time slot on KSBY-TV Channel 6 San Luis Obispo tomorrow (Wednesday Nov 11) according to program information released by the television station Included in the program beside an interview with William V Johnson (Music Department) director of the band will be film of the entire halftime show presented by the Cal Poly band during the Oakland Raiders-Pittsburgh Steelers professional football game played in the Oakland Coliseum on Oct 25

CHAMBER SINGERS REHEARSING FOR NOV~ middot 22 CONCERT

Rehearsals for a concert scheduled fo~ the afternoon of Nov 22 at the United Methodist Church in San Luis Obispo are occupying the attentions of members of the College Chamber Singers according to John Russell (Music Department) who is director of the ensemble The program which is planned for 4 pm will feature the mixed voices of the Chamber Singers in several madrigals and four works for choir Admission will be free and the public is invited to attend

Dr Carter joined the Cal Poly faculty in 1947 after 12 years of government service with the United States Department of Agriculture in the Soil Conservation Service He became a teacher because his 12 years of government work revealed the need for more trained people in soil science

The retiring department head has viewed a major growth in the soil science program at Cal Poly In 1947 he was the total staff and the laboratory was housed in the basement of the 1901 structure variously identified as the domestic arts building the agricultural education building and currently as an architecture laboratory Today there are 6 facul~y members instructing courses in soil science and 81 majors in the program The Soil Science Department is housed in a wing of the Science Building and is served by three laboratories and three dual purpose rooms

In 1968 Dr Carter developed and initiated Cal Polys natural resources management degree program which this year has 161 majors and which will gain department status on Jan 1 Marvin J Whalls a member of the Soil Science Department faculty since 1968 will be acting head of the new department bull

The retiring Cal Poly department head was named an honorary state farmer by the California Association of Future Farmers of America in 1959 in recognition of his work in encouraging land judging activities among FFA chapters In 1966 he was named a fellow of the Soil Conservation Society of America in recognition of his contribution to the science and art of good land use

Dr Carter is a member of Alpha Zeta national honorary and service fraternity for college and university agricultural students Beta Beta Beta biological sciences honorary fraternity Mu Beta Beta 4-H fraternity Phi Sigma biological sciences fraternity Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honorary fraternity the Range Management Society Soil Conservation Society of America and the Soil Science Society

The retiring department head was raised on a general livestock farm near Oak Grove Ark and on a fruit ranch at Fresno He earned his BS degree in agriculture at Oregon State University in 1930 and his doctorate at Michigan State University in 1934

A member of the soil science faculty at Cal Poly for the past six years Dr Piper formerly was a farm operator and college food service director Just before moving to Cal Poly he was an instructor in research and teaching at Michigan State University Dr Piper also has been a consultant to the Peace Corps in overseas programs and has coordinated an internship program for the Peace Corps at Cal Poly for the past year

The newly-appointed department head earned his bachelors degree at W J Bryan College in Dayton Tenn in 1953 and completed his masters and doctors degree studies at Michigan State in 1959 and 1967 respectively middot
