A Jesuit parish uniting hearts and minds in the Spirit of Jesus Christ

As I once again heard Mark’s gospel story about The Widow’s Mite, I also kept hearing the haunting words from the first chapter of the prophet Isaiah. “Cease doing evil. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged; defend the widow; hear the orphan’s plea.” The “wronged,” the “orphans,” and the “widows” were

powerless and voiceless members of society. God continually called his people to notice them and their plight. Love demands that “we become voice for the voiceless and power for the powerless.” No more and certainly no less.

Debie Thomas, reflecting on this weekend’s gospel, highlights what Jesus notices and calls his followers to notice. Jesus noticed the widow’s courage, her dignity and her trust. The widow made her “insignificant” gift alongside the wealthy with their fistfuls of coins. She allowed the last scraps of her security to fall out of her hands. This took courage. The people around her in the Temple regarded her as “expendable.” The widow, however, trusted that her tiny gift had value in God’s eyes.

Jesuit High School, under the direction of Ed Trafton, performed the powerful play entitled The Elephant Man this week. It is based on the story of Joseph Merrick who lived in the Victorian era and was known for the extreme deformity of his body. People judged and avoided Joseph Merrick because of his appearance. There is a powerful moment in the play when Merrick cries out, “I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! I am a man!” Jesus would have known this and noticed this. He would have called his followers to notice and know the same things. Jesus would have also responded to Merrick’s humanness and the goodness that is buried deep within every creature of God.

My favorite Methodist pastor and poet, Steve Garnaas-Holmes, reflected on this weekend’s gospel in light of the November 6th elections. He believes that this story about the widow is not just about her. It’s about the powerful who abuse the poor. As he expresses it, in his poem Choice:

The story is about the contrast between generosity and greed, between love and fear, and which side God is on.

It’s about the choice you must always make. . .

The choice will always be between love and fear. Generosity or greed. Welcome or refusal. Sharing or selfishness. Reconciliation or blame.

As many of you know, Jesuit Fr. Jack Donald has lived and

worked in Honduras his entire ordained life. He visits us each August and invites us to assist him in ministering to the voiceless and powerless in Honduras through the sharing of our treasure. Because of your generosity, Fr. Jack has been able to do amazing things for the good people he serves.

Currently, there is much violence in Honduras as a result of gangs and drug-related violence. That caravan of immigrants, that began in Honduras, and is headed towards our border has been demonized by our elected officials for political gain. The overwhelming majority of those in that caravan are simply seeking to escape the violence and find a better life for their family. While dishonest politicians would have us demonize and dismiss them, we are confronted once again with a choice between love and fear, generosity or greed, welcome or refusal, sharing or selfishness, reconciliation or blame. God help us always to “choose life, the blessing.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)

Fr. Mike

Declaration by Andrew King

Today let there be sounded one sorrow, sorrow from the depths of all loving, sorrow in the unity of all caring, sorrow for the lost and for the hurting, and may it sound as a summons and call.

Today let there be constructed one city, built of the bricks of compassion, grounded on the bedrock of justice, opening its doors toward kindness, with welcome in place of a wall.

Today let there be united one people, hearts beating one blood through all bodies, hands holding hands in one commitment, heads turned to the light of one horizon, the horizon of wholeness and peace meant for all. Copyright ©2018 by Andrew King

Viva SI Gaming Night a “Royal Flush”

More than 200 parishioners and friends headed to the tables to enjoy our Fourth Annual Viva SI gaming night. The Las Vegas style evening was filled with exciting wins, delicious food, amazing prize baskets, unique silent auction items, and our very own celebrity priest dealers. A tremendous and special “thank you” to our event chairs Angel Hernandez and Flo Kahn for their dedication and commitment to ensure the evening’s success. Additionally, our sincerest appreciation to the many volunteers who shared their talent with our fundraiser benefiting the missions of the parish. Our young adult ministry was also out in full force to lend their support. The atmosphere of fellowship echoed across the parish center as participants tried their luck at blackjack, craps, and roulette. We are also very grateful to our many sponsors and donors who helped make the evening possible. Visit our parish website to see a complete list of sponsors along with photographs of this fun-filled night at: www.stignatiussac.org

St Ignatius New Donor Wall to Be Dedicated

Dear Friends and Families of St. Ignatius: As we make final preparations for our new Parish School and Offices, one of the upcoming events is the dedication of our new donor wall, recognizing the many people, families and friends who have been instrumental in supporting the Capital Campaign and our future ministries. The donor wall recognizes the names of persons or their loved ones who have made pledges of $5,000 or more to the realization of our new school and parish offices. These pledges are arranged by size of donation to the campaign. If you go to the Vestibule (entrance) of the Church, you will see a sketch of the memorial wall. Names of those who are on the donor wall are shown on

poster boards. If you would like to make any changes to your own memorial for your donation, please complete the donor wall postcard available and leave in the donor wall box. If you would be interested in: Increasing your pledge, Remembering someone not mentioned on the list, or Having your name or someone you love remembered or honored on the donor wall, Please contact Fr. Dave or our Campaign Administrator, Sue Kneer, at the parish offices, 916-482-9666, x234. Your request and/or the donor wall postcards should be completed by the end of the Thanksgiving holidays (November 25, 2018).

Thank you for your support.

For the remainder of November, we have two other events – in order to sign up, or see other events, parishioners should go to: https://www.meetup.com/iWISSH-St-Ignatius-Loyola-Parish/

November 18th at 7pm at Joy Graf’s home – “Share the Warmth of the Season”. Join us at a gift party for charity. Warm drinks, wine, desserts and wrapping paper will be provided. Please bring something to give warmth to a child, to be donated to Sharing God’s Bounty.

November 29th at 6:30pm at The Kesich Home – “Desserts & Donations – Holiday Kick-off for Charity.” Come share dessert and conversation about opportunities for engaging with favorite chariities, and bring any sort of donation for St. Ignatius Parish.
