Be Prepared or Be Foolish – In today’s Gospel, five of the virgins were ready to meet their master upon his arrival, while five were not. It is a reminder, like so many others in the Gospels, to be prepared for when the Lord comes to call us to himself. Will our hearts and lives be ready to meet the Lord and dwell with him, or will we be caught off guard and our salvation be affected? In a more
temporal way, have we been preparing ourselves for the changes that are coming as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative? Have we taken the time to educate ourselves about what will happen (Bishop Zubik’s announcements on April 26th, building relationships, new clergy assignments, new Mass schedules) and what will not happen (no immediate parish mergers, no immediate church closings) over the next 12 months? Don’t be caught off guard by On Mission. Be prepared and be an agent of growth and support in the Church as a disciple of Jesus. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

REMEMBER TO DIE
Consider the sculpture, “Walking to the Sky,” by Jonathan Borofsky. There are at least three copies of it around the world, one of which happens to sit on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. It’s not a bad sculpture for CMU, which as a secular university undertakes to advance human knowledge and technology, but without much thought about the ultimate purpose and meaning of things. People walk upward, toward the sky, until…they’re simply not there any more. It’s November, Advent approaches, the liturgical year is coming to a close, and the readings and prayers of the church bend toward thoughts of death, judgment, Heaven and Hell. An old aphorism, memento mori, bids us “remember to die.” Don’t think you’re just going to walk upwards, endlessly growing older or richer or more mature. Instead, remember to die, and shape your life accordingly. Live so that your death can become a victory—not the end to a life absorbed in worldly affairs, but the beginning of a life given wholeheartedly to God’s love.
Last week I wrote to you about a $25,000 matching-funds offer for the Parish Share Program (PSP). If you’re registered as active in this parish, you also received a letter from me about it. Please consider sending in your gifts or at least your four-month pledge papers, so that the parish can take advantage of the matching funds, put our finances in good order, and help facilitate a smooth transition over the years to come, pooling our resources with neighbors On Mission for The Church Alive!
Bishop Zubik and many other Christian leaders and pastors, including me, have endorsed a special event for Black Friday, November 24, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. It’ll involve an ecumenical Thanksgiving service and an extraordinary one-million-meal-packing project for charity. Register at www.amentoaction.org and also email me at [email protected], so that we can better organize our group and perhaps recruit some volunteers.

HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS
IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS
Last week we began a discussion about Bishop Robert Barron's "How to Share Your Faith" book,
and the first of his "seven qualities of a new evangelist", that of being in love with Christ. And we
talked about how to deepen that relationship with Christ so as to have something to actually be
able to share with those in your life who don't yet have this relationship.
This week we continue the discussion, recognizing that perhaps you're now at least beginning on
the path to a deeper relationship with He who is (whether you realize it or not!) the Lord of your life.
Let's talk about ways to connect the people in your life with Him, the One who holds you in the
palm of his hand (Isaiah 49:16), and who guards you as the apple of his eye (Psalm 17:8).
Think about two significant people in your life whom you've introduced to each other, and who
now have a great relationship of their own now. Maybe you introduced a good friend, or even a
boyfriend or girlfriend, to your parents, or to another good friend ... how did you go about doing
that? You probably talked lovingly about each to the other. Maybe you helped each of them
put their best foot forward, to minimize the risk of any issues or disagreements, and to maximize the
chances of a good first meeting. Early on you may have taken one of them to an important event
of the other, to show them off "in their element". Perhaps you didn't even have to tell them how
important this relationship was to you ... is it possible that it was obvious just from how you talked
about them?
If you spend some "quality time" reflecting on how important God is in your life, if you show others
how important your Church life is, by talking about it, or just by living it out, if you come to the
sacraments ready to invest your heart into them, it will show...and then when you extend an
invitation to someone to join you at a Church service or parish function, they just might say yes,
because you are no longer 'hiding your lamp under a bushel basket'!
Be a good friend!
Invite your friend!
Share Christ with your friend!
You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
— Matthew 5:14-16

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish salutes our Veterans!
In Church tradition, inherited in part from Judaism, it is the responsibility of the bishop to speak for the Lord Jesus Christ and to represent him, but it is the responsibility of the prince to protect peace and justice, if necessary by “wielding the sword” of armed force. In the United States, our rulers maintain order domestically via the police, but at and beyond our borders via the army, navy, air force, and marines. Veterans of our armed services deserve our special respect as instruments of this gravest of princely powers. They also deserve our special appreciation insofar as their deployment often puts them at risk of injury and death. Pray for them as you do for our rulers. Hence Katharine Lee Bates’ lyrics of America the Beautiful, of which the third verse is often printed thus:
O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine!

SEAS SUBSTANCE ADDICTION MINISTRY (SAM) We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in Room 5 of the Bayley building. Our meeting lasts one hour. Our November meeting is Tuesday, November 21. Our rosary for recovery will commence in the Immaculate Conception chapel at 6:30. “When we talk about accepting things we cannot change, we acknowledge our powerlessness before many of the realities of our existence. *** The original twelve step program developed for Alcoholics Anonymous drives home the principle of serene acceptance of what we are powerless to change, together with a confident turning to God. *** Whether we suffer from addiction or not, admitting that we are powerless over many things is a giant step toward inner peace, for it leads us to lean confidently on the true Power that can change all things.” [The Way of Serenity, Father Jonathan Morris, pp 34-40.] Join us this month! All things are possible with God’s help.
BISHOP CANEVIN HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Placement Tests will be administered on Saturday, November 18, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (doors open at 8:30 a.m.) and Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (doors open at 11:30 a.m.). All students seeking admission to Bishop Canevin must take the Placement Test in order to determine appropriate course selections for entering freshmen and to be considered for scholarships. To register for the test, please call 412-922-7400, ext. 224. There is a $10.00 fee for the test which may be paid in advance by check (payable to Bishop Canevin High School) or at the door on the day of the test. Parents are invited to our library while students take the test, where Administrators will be on hand to answer questions regarding admissions, financial aid or Bishop Canevin High School. Applications are now being accepted for the 2018-19 academic year. Interested students may visit the school’s website, www.bishopcanevin.org, to complete and submit an online application.
