Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Cecilia Church, Leominster November 12, 2017
A Message From Our Pastor.
Dear Friends, This is a weekend to catch your breath after another successful St. Cecilia Parish Fair. So many tremendous volunteers made it possible. Now we all take a deep breath and get ready for the Holiday Season. I’m not a big fan of terms like “Happy Holidays” and “Season’s Greeting” when it is used to avoid the more appropriate term “Merry Christmas,” but in this case it works. We are about to enter into more than a month of special holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, truly the Holiday Season. We begin with Thanksgiving, when we take the time to thank God for a bountiful harvest and for all that we have received. In some ways it is the simplest of holidays, no gifts, minimal decorations, no cards, just an opportunity for family and friends to gather together for a festive meal. But how do you celebrate Thanksgiving without a home to go to? When I was at St. Anthony Parish, a parishioner, who was a schoolteacher, took in a family that had been burned out of their home. The family was a husband and wife, three children and the husband’s brother. The father worked two jobs, his brother also worked and the wife worked part time. They had paid a first and last month’s rent, and a security deposit totaling $3600. They contacted their “landlord,” a real estate holding company with a post office box in New Hampshire.” No response. Then they went to the police. The police found out that this company folded after the fire. The Red Cross had provided them with three nights hotel accommodation. Now they had to get out or pay on their own. This is when the teacher got involved and it was at this time that I real-ized how hard working families can become homeless. Shortly thereafter, St. Anthony Parish joined the Montachusett Interfaith Hospitality Network, who provide housing, meals and counselling to families at the worst time in their lives, to get them back on their feet. Now St. Cecilia Parish has joined the group. We have wonderful volunteers who cook meals and staff the center in the evening until 8 o’clock. Every volunteer is acting on your behalf, in your name. When a volunteer cooks a meal, the parish reimburses them for the food they bought (not their labor and time). There also are staples that the center always needs like milk, bread, paper towels, etc., which our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society pays for but a parish volun-teer does the shopping for the week we are volunteering. Not everyone can cook a meal or go grocery shopping for staples or spend time at the center. But everyone can help. Next weekend, we will have a collection so we can put aside those funds to pay for food and supplies for our turn as MIHN volunteers. If everyone could give just a dollar or two, we would have enough money to last all the weeks we volunteer this year. This is a special collection. There is no envelope in your packet for this collection. At this time of the year when we take the time to give thanks for all that we have received, remem-ber those struggling through a difficult time. Be a part of our St. Cecilia Team of volunteers for MIHN by becoming a financial supporter. The collection is next weekend. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso
