Toowong Catholic Parish.

We acknowledge the Elders, past and

Rohingya Refugee Crisis

The Caritas network is responding to the refugee crisis in Bangladesh.

Caritas is providing urgent humanitarian relief to thousands of Rohingya refugees who have crossed the Myanmar border to the Cox’s Bazaar district in Bangladesh.

The United Nations estimates that more than 600,000 people, most of whom identify as Rohingya, have crossed into Bangladesh since August 25, 2017, fleeing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. (UNHCR, UNOCHA)

The speed and scale of the influx has resulted in a critical humanitarian emergency. These people are now living in dire conditions. They have few possessions and are reliant on humanitarian aid for their survival. Many are injured and traumatised. Almost 70 per cent are young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. (DFAT).

Caritas has been responding to the immediate needs of this devastating humanitarian crisis by providing essential food items such as dal, salt, sugar and cooking oil, as well as basic cooking utensils, reaching 10,000 families in desperate need.

As more refugees arrive every day in this rapidly escalating crisis, there is an acute need for emergency shelters, blankets, clean water, sanitation, health care and protection for the new arrivals. Caritas Bangladesh hopes to be able to arrange these in its second phase of distribution.

Your donation to the Caritas Australia Asia Emergency Appeal will help to respond to the

escalating immediate and ongoing needs of this devastating humanitarian crisis by providing

food, non-food items, shelter, clean water, mobile health clinics and sanitation facilities.

The parish would like support this effort of Caritas

Australia. Parishioner Joe Foley who works for

Caritas will speak at all Masses this weekend.

All loose monies contributed to the usual parish

collection will be contributed to this appeal.

Also, Caritas Appeal envelopes will be made

available for people who would like to make a tax

deductible donation, and / or receive a receipt.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.
