University receivesSea Grant fundsfor more research

Texas A&M University will continueits statewide program of marine-relatedresearch, education and public serviceunder a new $1.7 million grant to its SeaGrant College Program from the Na-tional Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad-ministration, U.S. Department of Com-merce.

The grant provides funds throughAugust 1984. Matching funds fromstate, local, university and privatesources will bring the budget to$3,360,000 in support of 28 Sea Grantactivities in 1983-84.

Eleven new projects are included inthe 1983-84 program, in the areas ofmariculture, marine fisheries, marine en-vironmental studies and coastal studies. The remaining 17 are continuations.

One project involves studying the en-vironmental aspects of suction cut-terhead dredging, a standard procedurealong the Gulf coast.

Shore erosion in Texas’ bays andestuaries is the focus of one coastalstudy. Another will assess the impact ofTexas’ coastal industrial developmentand population growth on the allocationof marine resources.

Sea Grant funds also support amarine fellowship program at TexasA&M that encourages interdisciplinaryprojects among graduate students inmarine-related fields.
