CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

You, O Lord, have called us to enter into your gates with joyful singing, yet how often we grumble

and complain. You have blessed us in many aspects of our lives yet so often, we lack a basic

gratitude for all that is wonderful in creation and in life. Restore us to joy through worship, to grace

through living, and to love in all of our relationships. Remind us in all of our living of the

tremendous, heart warming gift of your son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Redeemer. It is in his name

that we ask this. (Silence for personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

RESPONSIVE SONG NO. 359 “Give Thanks”

Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One, give thanks because he’s given Jesus

Christ his Son. (repeat) And now let the weak say “I am strong,” let the poor say “I am rich,” because

of what the Lord has done for us. (repeat) Give thanks!

THE LORD’S PRAYER (unison)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth

power and the glory, forever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 17: 11-19

Pew Bible, New Testament

SERMON “Gratitude To Grow” Rev. Emily Riley Campbell

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Excerpt from A Brief Statement of Faith (PCUSA Confession) In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and

the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen

Session News

Hanging of the Greens 2016

Please join us TODAY immediately following the second services. We will provide a light luncheon

before we begin decorating our entire church for Advent. Each area will have the decorations there and the trees will already be up. When one area is completed, you are welcome to go to another room to help. If you have school age children, activities will be planned for them in Fellowship Hall. We will be making cards for members who are not able to attend church. The youth groups will help decorate the Upper Room. They did a great job last year!

Hope to see YOU there!

2015 Per Capita Our Per Capita for the year 2016 is $28,025. The Per Capita assessment is to cover the costs of operating the Presbytery of Detroit, Synod of the Covenant and General Assembly. They in turn provide direction, support and guidance to the local churches. This year, the Per Capita amount listed on your weekly envelope is $25.00 per person. The church is required to use operating funds to cover the difference between the amount you contribute and the amount our church is required to pay the Presbytery of Detroit. Please help us to defray the cost burden this assessment places on our operating budget.

We are a family of faith: Pledge update Thank you to all who have submitted your commitment cards. To date, the church has received pledges totaling $581,850 toward our 2017 budget. Due to changes in the congregation (deaths, families who have moved, etc.), commitments are running behind 2016 levels. We thank you for your prayerful consideration of your pledge. Commitments can be submitted directly to Stu Dodge in the church office. The Stewardship Committee Tina Creguer, Martha Boeve, Orlean Heidel, Jack Farrow

Deacons Time to Clean Out Your Closets… As you begin to go through your winter clothes, here’s an easy way to get rid of those items you no longer wear, are out of style or just don’t fit right anymore. During the Month of November, the Deacons are collecting clothing for the Open Door Mission at Fort Street Presbyterian Church. There are an estimated 20,000 homeless individuals in Detroit. The Open Door serves many of these men and women by providing food and clothing. As the winter months approach, warm clothing is in short supply. All donations of winter items are helpful; however there is a particular need for the following items:

Men’s Clothing (pant size 32 and up) Mittens, Gloves, Knit Hats Thermal (long johns) bottoms – size large Socks\Tube Socks – cotton or wool

Also needed, but not as critically, are shoes and boots. Any other winter clothing donations welcome (please do not donate summer items at this time.) The need is great. So, please consider cleaning out that closet and helping someone less fortunate. You can even shop inexpensively for items to donate at the Salvation Army, Goodwill Stores and even our own Presbyterian Thrift Shop. Donations may be deposited in the collection area in the basement across from the High School Room during the month of November. If you have any questions, please contact Craig Blunk at [email protected] or at 248-719-1203. Thank you!

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS needed: We are looking for bell ringers for the Salvation Army Kettle. 2016 Angel Tree

Each year, FPCP supports the Salvation Army through their Angel Tree program benefiting needy children and their families in our local community. To participate, all you need to do is choose a tag from the Angel Tree located in the Narthex. Gift ideas are listed on each tag to make shopping a little easier.

Bring your new, unwrapped gift(s) back to the church no later than Sunday, December 11th.

Be sure to secure the tag to the top of the package. The Deacons will deliver gifts to the Salvation Army for distribution to ensure every child in our area has a blessed Christmas.

Share the joy of Christ’s birth by adopting an Angel of your own!

Life Long Learning

Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books

by Azar Nafisi

Monday, November 28 @ 7:00 PM

Sign-up on the PW Bulletin Board

Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Azar Nafisi, a bold and inspired

teacher, secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western

classics. Some came from conservative and religious families, others were progressive and secular;

some had spent time in jail. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids in Tehran, as

fundamentalists seized hold of the universities and a blind censor stifled artistic expression, the

women in Nafisi’s living room spoke not only of the books they were reading but also about

themselves, their dreams and disappointments.

Deacons

Merry Christmas Church Family! We are a family of faith. In the Narthex, the deacons have provided a folding screen where, with one Christmas card, you can greet your entire church family. This is an opportunity to save your time, money, and the Earth's resources. Please donate the amount of money, large or small, that you might have spent on cards for your church family. Checks can be made out to FPCP with "Deacon's Christmas Cards" noted. This project helps the deacons raise funds for some of the good causes we support such as College Care packages, Local Mission, and Food and Fellowship Events. The screen will be in place following the "Hanging of the Greens" on Sunday, November 20th. You may leave your cards in the folder on the screen or with the church treasurer. The deacons, the Earth, and your family of faith all thank you!

individual and family in our church help a hungry family in

Malawi this Christmas. This $20 donation will save lives.
