“Sanctity has to do with gratitude.

To be a saint is to be fueled by gratitude,

nothing more and nothing less.”

-Ron Rolheiser-

I am thinking of the Gospel this past week-end…the Gospel about the talents and the demanding Master. I see the two servants who chose wisely, and as a result offered the master a great return on his investment. And then I imagine the one that buried his talent out of fear that he would somehow lose what he had been freely given. As school administra-tors, daily situations and decisions require courage, compassion and commitment. I give thanks for the blood, sweat, and tears that each administrator pours out onto the school community, daily investing your “talents” into your schools. Your commitment positively impacts lives. May each of us hear from a grateful master, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

In the month of November, especially during Thanksgiving, let’s consider Fr. Rolheiser’s words, and fueled by gratitude, practice holiness. You give of your best selves in service to the schools as a ministry of our Church.

Need help telling your MAP Achievement Story?

Six cohorts of students have taken MAP tests three or four times. With these waves of MAP testing behind us, we have a growing body of longitudinal data with which to tell our achievement stories.

How have these same students achieved over time? How do students from your school compare to their peers throughout the Archdiocese? What about the “summer slump”?

I’ve assembled all their MAP data into one Excel document and charted their learning by cohort so we can see their achieve-ment and growth.

Leadership Academy The Office for Catholic Schools offers a Leadership Academy for aspiring administrators. Courses in managerial, academic, spiritual and strategic leadership are taught by recognized Catholic school leaders and shareholders. Working in solidarity to ensure a system of excellent Catholic Schools, the Leadership Academy prepares tomorrow's leaders with the knowledge, skills and strategies in Catholic school leadership.

This year, the Leadership Academy has a separate track for aspiring leaders and the new principal induction. Our aspiring administrators met for their first Leadership Academy meeting on October 10th for a meeting focused on school culture.

Hourly Pay for Substitutes

Some principals were asking if substitutes can be paid for hours worked if not needed for a full or half day. The hourly

rate of pay for substitutes is determined by taking the daily rate and dividing by number of hours that substitutes are

expected to work in a full day. It is a local decision if a school wants to offer a long –term substitute a covenant and bene-

fits. With the shortage of teachers and substitutes this may become necessary in order to find someone willing to substi-

tute. If a covenant extends to the end of the school year then benefits will need to be paid for the 3 months after the

school year ends. Advertise in your church bulletin about the need for substitutes and you may get a former teacher who

would want to work only at your school.

Policy Book Update Online

All updated policies have now been approved by the Archdiocesan School Board, and the lawyers. During this week, the

new policies will be placed online and the former policies removed. Remember that the marker for a new policy for the

2017-2018 school year will be highlighted in yellow. I suggest that you address some of these changes that will impact

your staff at a faculty meeting and point out the new additions or edits. The Bullying and Harassment policies that were

included in the packet at the last Principal meeting are now part of the Handbook.

Performance Review

3.60 (B) Newly-assigned teachers shall be evaluated twice within the first year of their assignment; once within the first

60 days of their assignment and again before May 15th and thereafter according to the schedule set forth in 3.60 (A).
