Radio Legend Tempie Lindsey Joins WRR
The Countdown begins
‘From the Top’ at the Winspear
tempie lindsey, whose voice has been described as “gentle as a summer rain,” joins WRR-FM as part of its announcing staff. lindsey, a fixture in Dallas radio for more than three decades, will bring listeners a perfect music mix for the weekend from 4 p.m. to midnight, plus great shows like A Night on the Town and Pipedreams.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be part of WRR-FM,” said lindsey. “While I have spent the better part of my on-air career in Dallas playing, in some cases, an altogether different kind of music, what WRR has provided its audience for years has also been what I’ve depended on when I needed something to soothe and refresh my own mind.” WRR has been part of the Dallas radio landscape since 1921 and holds the second oldest radio license in the united states.
“We pride ourselves in not only providing our audience the highest quality musical fare we can,” said WRR-FM operations Manager, Kurt Rongey, “but also try to ensure that we have talent that can inform and entertain our listeners every single day. to that end, we are excited about adding tempie to the WRR team. she is a singularly talented host and announcer who knows our audience and, as important, our audience knows her.”
the radio veteran is a pioneering woman in Dallas and texas radio, having also established a wide following as a key radio talent in
san Antonio. In Dallas, lindsey is best known for her work at KtXQ ‘Q102,’ KZeW ‘the Zoo’ and KoAI ‘the oasis,’ the adult contemporary format that reigned in the metroplex for years. “listeners have long memories,” said Rongey. “they especially like tuning in and hearing an old, trusted friend, which is what lindsey to so many people.”
one of WRR’s most popular shows, From the Top, comes to Dallas Friday, nov. 13 at 8 p.m. Host and acclaimed pianist Christopher o’Riley will be on hand at the Winspear opera House for a live taping of this radio showcase of America’s top young classical musicians. WRR was one of the first stations in the country
to air From the Top, which is now distributed to nearly 250 stations nationwide, reaching almost a million listeners. From the Top airs on WRR Classical 101.1 FM on saturdays at 9 a.m.
Many great performers have already graced the stage of the Winspear, but this is the first show at the At&t Performing Arts
Center completely dedicated to pre-college age musicians.
Among those from north texas who will appear include 15-year-old pianist sahun “sam” Hong from Fort Worth, who takes college level courses at texan Christian Academy and has participated in the van Cliburn Foundation’s Musical Awakenings program, and 14-year-old violist Isabella Markham from Dallas, who studies at the suzuki Institute of Dallas and has earned From the Top’s $10,000 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. they will be joined by 15-year-old violinist Jenny lee from bloomington, In, 16-year-old cellist John-Henry Crawford from shreveport, lA, and members of the Chicago symphony orchestra’s Percussion scholarship Group performing an innovative group marimba piece.
For the past decade, From the Top has been the preeminent showcase for America’s best young musicians. From the Top shares
the stories and performances of pre-collegiate musicians with millions each week. each program provides a compelling and entertaining window into the world of a diverse group of young people who pursue life with passion, determination, and joy.
tickets are available from the At&t Performing Arts Center online at AttPAC.oRG or by calling (214)880-0202. visit wrr101.com to learn when this program will air on WRR 101.1 FM.
A local musician once said, “December is the only time of the year when the general public has no choice but to listen to good music.” He was referring to the fact that so many beloved seasonal melodies have their backgrounds in the styles of the great composers.
WRR receives a lot of feedback on the difference between our holiday music and that of other metroplex stations. no one has summed it up better than Cheryl from burleson, who said: “I am a classical musician and play a lot of Christmas music this time of year, but I don’t get tired of it! I crave Christmas music this time of year and I can only take the Christmas pop music station for so long! thank you for playing Christmas music every day. I am listening to your station even more than I have before! I love you WRR!”
the day after thanksgiving, WRR will bring back its highly successful mix of holiday favorites. 101.1 FM is the best place to revel in the warmth, tradition and good cheer of the season.
this year marks the ninth anniversary of the WRR Christmas Carol Countdown, weekdays at 3:30 p.m. starting Dec. 10 presented by northPark Center, the Metroplex Cadillac Dealers and Centennial Fine Wines. The Countdown culminates in a program featuring all twelve of the most popular carols Dec. 25 at 6 p.m. be sure and vote for your favorite holiday selection online at wrr101.com and become eligible to win NorthPark Gold, just in time for holiday shopping!
WRR presents Caroling at the Adolphus Dec. 14-18, its beloved annual series of hour-long programs broadcast live from the Adolphus Hotel, featuring favorite holiday music performed by world-renowned
Metroplex choirs. each performance takes place in the lush “living-room lobby” of the historic Adolphus with a live audience of WRR listeners enjoying warm cider, cookies and music. this year, the turtle Creek Chorale, schola Cantorum of texas, texas boys Choir/singing Girls of texas, and the Dallas symphony Chorus will be returning to sing. For the first time, the Arts District Chorale will be performing. stay tuned for details on scheduling and how you can attend.
May you and yours have a warm and enjoyable time of togetherness and sharing this holiday season.

Face and Form: Modern and Contemporary Sculpture in the Meadows Collection is the first exhibition in the Meadows Museum at sMu since the completion of the museum’s new entry plaza.
the sculpture collection includes 21 significant works. eleven were donated in the late 1960s and early 1970s by museum founder Algur H. Meadows for the establishment of an outdoor sculpture garden in honor of his second wife, elizabeth.
this founding collection (known as the elizabeth Meadows sculpture Collection) represents superb examples of 20th-century sculpture, ranging from Rodin to Maillol and lipchitz. It includes works by some of the most important european artists, such as Moore, Giacometti, and Marini, as well as works by their American colleagues, such as oldenburg and smith.
the works served as a guide for future museum acquisitions of modern and contemporary sculpture, including Spirit’s Flight (1979) by Isamu noguchi, commissioned from the artist in honor of Algur Meadows after his unexpected death in a car accident in 1978. Spirit’s Flight, which was displayed for years in front of the Meadows school of the Arts, will be installed on the museum’s renovated plaza.
“With this exhibition, we are able to showcase our exceptional collection of sculpture in a way it has never been seen before,” said Dr. Mark Roglán, museum director. “We are also welcoming our new monumental sculpture Sho by Jaume Plensa, our most important acquisition by a living artist since santiago Calatrava’s Wave in 2002.”
Face and Form showcases work outdoors on the newly redesigned entry plaza and indoors in the Jake and nancy Hamon Galleries. the new entry features a fountain and reconfigured access stairs leading up to the sculpture plaza from bishop blvd. the plaza’s innovative design features grassy areas, gravel paths and a new overlook on the plaza provides a dramatic view of Calatrava’s Wave, permanently installed below the plaza at street level.

OvertureA Modern Face for the Meadows
‘A Celebration of Reading’ or‘A Celebration of Reading’
Imagine looking at a page and seeing only what appeared to be a series of indecipherable symbols or looking at a traffic sign and not knowing what it said or, worse, what it meant. Welcome to the world that more than forty-million Americans occupy, the world of illiteracy. It is a place inhabited by people---people who blend into the crowd in every city in America---genuinely challenged in finding things as simple as an intersection on a map, filling
out a bank deposit slip or anything else requiring even the most rudimentary reading skills. It is an epidemic illness whose victims suffer in silence.
As it has for the past several years, WRR 101 is proudly doing its part in the fight against this national problem by joining former President George bush and barbara bush in A Celebration of Reading. this wonderful event, now in its eighth year in Dallas and a very important part of the barbara bush Foundation for Family literacy, underscores the importance of reading by encouraging families with children to read together.
the Dallas ‘Celebration’ brings together, for one evening, five noted American authors personally selected by Mrs. bush. this year’s selection of authors includes David baldacci, Jeff engel, A.J. Jacobs, Mary tyler Moore and Julia Reed. In addition to this galaxy of best selling writers, many of these “Celebrations” with the bush’s have also included unannounced and special surprise guest appearances. but, most often it is not the noted authors or the special ‘guests’ who have transfixed those in the audience. Rather, it is the personal and compelling testimonial by a young person whose life has been changed and given added value by the gift of literacy, or a family who has benefited from the work of the bush Foundation.
In a 2009 survey on literacy, it was determined that a significant portion of the country’s prison population is comprised of people whose reading level is at or below the functional literacy level. the survey also showed that more than half of all books purchased in the u.s. are bought by someone 65 or older, a testament to the fact that reading is a lifelong habit.
Illiteracy is the enemy in this fight. but, this fight is winnable. Join former President bush and wife barbara and WRR 101 on november 16, at the Morton H. Meyerson symphony Center at 7 p.m. for A Celebration of Reading. For more information go to barbarabushfoundation.com or call 800-222-5652.
