2009 Swimming NewsletterCongratulations to our Lady Cougarfish! They finished their season with an AWESOME 8 in a row victory at the 11th annual Middle School City Swimming Championships. The final score on September 26th was: Columbia/Frontier - 101, Aurora Hills/East/Quest - 90, Mrachek/Murphy Creek - 90 and North/South/West - 31. The girls worked very hard all season to make this a reality and Coach Aker and I are VERY proud. I encourage all the girls to keep up with the strides they have made this year and I challenge them to improve their skills by continuing swimming on an outside team such as the CARA team or the Tsunami team at Rangeview. The CARA team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays while the Tsunami team practices on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Contact Kevin Baldermann, district aquatic supervisor, at 303-365-7809 for more information. I look forward to seeing all of my 7th graders back next year for another exciting season so please make sure they have their physicals done over the summer. I wish all my 8th graders the best in High School and I hope to see them on the high school swim team. Parents, THANK YOU for all your dedication and support; we could not be as successful without you!
See you next year!

Knitting ClubColumbia has a new club. The Wednesday Afternoon Knitting Club. We would like to solicit donations, such as knitting needles, crochet hooks, or yarn, from the community for students who want to learn the art of knitting and crocheting, but do not have the resources to get supplies themselves. We would also like to extend an invitation to any member of the community that would like to join and learn how to knit, or share their expertise with our students. If interested in donating to our club, or joining please contact Ms. Tutak and Ms. Wilbanks.
Positive Art & Positive MusicPositive Art and Positive Music are 2 electives classes offered to 7th grade this year for 2nd semester on B days only. We are inviting those 7th grade students that are interested in becoming a peer helper in one of these classes to assist our Life Skills students in an art or a music class. This class meets for 3rd and 4th quarters on B days during the 7th grade elective time and if you are accepted into one of these courses you will be helping our students at Columbia who have severe disabilities. It is required that you complete an application for one of these classes and return it to Ms. Novy or Mr. Pope before your schedule can be changed. You do not need previ-ous experience working with students with severe disabilities, but you do need to be a helpful, kind, mature, and responsible student in order to be a peer helper. This is our 7th year for Positive Art and the 4th year for Positive Music and these programs are very unique to Columbia. This is a very rewarding class and a chance to get to know other students in our building; you may get an application from the main office or on Columbia’s website. www.aps.k12.co.us/columbia Applications are due by November 24th!

Columbia student artwork will be on display in the store for the entire month of December and on the evening of December 8th we encourage our CMS families to help support our school by doing some of your holiday shopping! This is a fun and beneficial family event where not only can you shop and view student artwork, but there will also be student music performances and arts and craft activities for all. A percentage of the proceeds for that evening’s purchases will come back to Columbia and benefit the Media Center and the Art Department. Please come for a night of family entertainment and activities and help support Columbia on our 3rd Barnes & Noble bookfair night.
Announcing !!!!! International Baccalaureate (IB) and Gateway High School
Gateway High School is working toward becoming an IB World School. 9
th grade students, who
enter Gateway High School, the fall of 2010, will have the opportunity to be part of the IB
Middle Years Program.
International Baccalaureate is a worldwide educational organization known for assisting schools
to develop challenging academic programs of international education and rigorous assessment.
IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better
more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Gateway High School
with the support of IB is implementing the Middle Years Program (MYP) in 2010 to be followed
by the Diploma Program in 2012.
The Middle Years Program will be one of the options available to students at Gateway High
School. Students who wish to pursue advanced coursework during the 9th
and 10th
grade years
will be part of the Middle Years Program. All honors level classes will be taught within MYP.
Students will be expected to take 8 classes over the course of the 9th
grade year.
MYP Honors English 9 or MYP Galaxy English 9
MYP Honors Geography/Civics
MYP Honors Biology or MYP Galaxy Biology
MYP Honors Math (depending on students’ math level)
MYP Honors Integrated Algebra/Geometry 2
MYP Honors Integrated Algebra/Trig 3
MYP Honors Geometry
MYP Foreign Language (Spanish or French)
MYP Art (visual arts or performing arts – vocal, instrumental or drama)
MYP Technology/Design (computer, woodworking) or Galaxy Engineering
MYP Physical Education and Health
Within MYP there will be 2 educational options students may pursue. Students who are
interested in the math and science fields will select the Galaxy program with a focus on science,
technology, engineering and math. Students who are interested in the liberal arts fields will
focus on a well rounded course of study. All of the students will take the required coursework,
but the emphasis within the classes will vary depending on the academic focus. Successful
completion of MYP, at the end of 10th
grade, will provide students with the depth of skills and
knowledge to decide their educational pathway for the last two years of high school. They may
opt for continuing with IB through the Diploma Program, select to take Advanced Placement
classes, pursue coursework at Pickens Technical College or begin to take classes at the
Community College of Aurora. Whatever their choice, students who complete the MYP
program will have a solid foundation on which to build their future.
