Stand up for your generation
This Sunday, October 30, you will be invited to
stand up for your generation – literally. During the sermon,
I will ask everyone to stand up depending on when they
were born:
Before 1950 - Builders
1950-1964 - Boomers
1965-1989 - Busters
After 1989 - Bridgers
In his book One Church – Four Generations
(Understanding And Reaching All Ages In Your Church),
Gary McIntosh describes the following 4 groups in a
typical church:
1. The Builder Generation (born up to 1949)
Religious characteristics: Committed to church,
support foreign missions, enjoy Bible study, loyal to
the denomination, minister out of duty, worship in
reverence.
2. The Boomer Generation (born 1950-1964)
Religious characteristics: Committed to relationships,
want to belong, supportive of people, want to live their
faith, tolerant of differences.
3. The Buster Generation (born 1965-1989)
Religious characteristics: Committed to family,
support local causes, shorter attention span, want a
faith that meets needs, need to relieve stress, want less
structure.
4. The Bridger Generation (born 1990-present)
Religious characteristics: Committed to group, desire
interactivity, want honest relationships, want to be
connected, want a faith that is authentic.
As each of these groups stand, I want everyone
(including those standing) to look around the sanctuary. It
will be an eye-opening experience for us to see just how
many (or few) people from each of these 4 generations are
in worship. It will also be helpful for us to see how many
were born before 1965 (Builders & Boomers) compared to
after 1964 (Busters & Bridgers).

NOVEMBER 2011
This exercise will show why our Call to Action
team is working on a plan so that Trinity UMC can
intentionally begin to reach out to those born after
1964 (age 46 and younger) who are not currently in
church. During the next 20 years, we will lose a large
number of Builders as well as some Boomers. If we
don’t begin now to reach more Busters and Bridgers, in
2031 Trinity won’t still have 500+ members with 220+
people in worship. The church can no longer count on
repopulating from within. Many of our children and
grandchildren have already moved away, switched to
another church, or quit attending church altogether.
What kind of church do we want Trinity to be
in 20 years? What will we start doing today so that in
2031 God can use Trinity as a strong mission outpost
instead of a sinking cruise ship?
Blessings,
Pastor David

_________________________________ The Evangelism Committee is sponsoring an Advent
Study from Thanksgiving to Christmas. We encourage
you to start your own Study Group of 6-10 people. Your
group would choose when and where you would meet.
Each participant needs a book: Christmas Gifts That
Won’t Break by James W. Moore. Books are $7.00 and
will be ordered from Cokesbury. This will be a 4-week
study that would meet once a week. This is a very busy
time of year but we feel that this study would bring
perspective to the season. Deadline to ask the church
office to order you a book is Monday, November 7.
Contact Benna Bennett or Dave Ritter for more information.
