A cracking month for Nina!11 year old schoolgirl singer Nina Reiber-Hodgson, from King Al-fred's Sports College in Wantage, is celebrating a triumphantmonth after winning the title of Best Vocal Performance at the
Talent Oxford finals on 2nd October. The evening will be one tosavour as Nina recalls receiving a standing ovation from theformer X-Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji after she performed herversion of the Christine McVie classic Song Bird. Nina added:
“Rachel really loved my singing and gave me a big hug. We arekeeping in contact and I am going to see her at one of her showsin London soon!” Nina received a beautiful glass trophy and anarray of other prizes and would encourage other children toregister for auditions for 2011. Talent Oxford has already startedtaking registrations for next year’s competition. To top what has already proved to be a hugely successful start tothe month Nina came in as runner up to Ebony Cantwell at theKing Alfred's X-Factor show, on the 21st October. Nina sang a
rendition of Boys & Girls by Pixie Lott.Nina said: “The show was brilliantand the standard of all the singerswas amazing. I know King Alfred's isa Sports College but I think it hassome amazing musical performerstoo.” Nina is due to perform at Ox-ford's huge firework display on the
6th November in front of 25,000 peo-ple as part of her ongoing commit-ment to Talent Oxford. We think youwill be seeing a lot more of this risingstar in the months and years to come!
Onwards & Upwards for Active
The current economic climate has proved costly for many compa-nies, but weathering the storm is local recruitment agency ActivePersonnel Ltd. MD Nick Reiber-Hodgson feels that hard cut backsand an astute view to existing trading has saved the company, though he is not yet willing to talk about green shoots. Nick says
“We are fortunate to have built up a really great trading relationshipwith our existing clients and we hold customer care as key to ourongoing success. We are seeing new candidates and new opportu-nities every week.” Active are optimistic about the future, and arekeen to attract companies that may be seeing signs of recovery. AsNick says: “Employing the services of temporary workers seems theright thing to do for a lot of local businesses that are not quite readyto commit to permanent job roles.” Things can surely only get better.

Wine ReviewHead over Heels
Black Shiraz 2009
As the nights draw in and thefires begin to roar, I find myselfsearching for a rich, full-bodiedred to complement stews or ahearty roast beef.
An old faithful is the BertonVineyards Head over HeelsBlack Shiraz – an Aussie winethat does not hold back onbody and rich fruit extraction.
Packed with ripe, luscious black-berries, blueberries and plums, these flavours are well integrat-ed with spices such as vanillaand cracked black pepper. Thetannins are dense but not over-powering and add structure tothe palate. The length is longand lingers, with the flavoursdetected on the palate.
This is a wine that will certainlyhold its own when paired withgame pie!

The Lamb and Flag went through major refurbishment in 2009and the interior is now beautifully decorated in a more modernstyle but still in keeping with the age of the pub.
Since the refurbishment my husband Steve and I are frequentvisitors to The Lamb and Flag. We decided to visit one Mondayevening on the spur of the moment, to take advantage of their
"Monday Night is Ladies Night" - 50% off all food for all femalesoffer, only to find on arrival that the place was packed to therafters! Even without a booking in advance, James Lay, thelandlord, was very happy to accommodate us.
The Lamb and Flag has an English and authentic Thai menu; theyeven have Thai chefs. Steve and I both plumped for the Thaimenu and I had the Chicken Red Curry at £6.50, a dry aromaticcurry with Coconut milk and Thai herbs. My husband chose theDuck Curry with Red Curry Sauce, Coconut Milk, Vegetables andThai Herbs at £6.95 and we both accompanied the main mealwith portions of Egg Fried Rice at £2.00 each. I have nevertasted a more aromatic, flavoursome Thai curry in my life andthe quality of these curries never changes each time we visit.Unfortunately we have never tried their English menu yet astheir Thai menu is just so yummy!
The motto of the Lamb and Flag is "It’s our Pleasure" and Icannot fault the impeccable service, where literally nothing isever too much trouble; they even opened up for Steve and methis year for a cooked breakfast on a Sunday morning just forthe 2 of us! (I think as a special favour to us.) I have neverexperienced this level of service before and it keeps you comingback time after time.
I would highly recommend The Lamb and Flag. The Thai curriesare full of flavour and very good value for money and the serv-ice is just awesome.

I feel that I have truly immersed myselfinto the British culture when, as theautumn leaves begin to drop and thedays draw in, I crave a hearty tradition-al Sunday roast. Based on previous cu-linary experiences, we head towardsthe picturesque village of KingstonLisle, just outside Uffington. We flukedglorious autumnal sunshine and decid-ed that the family was better suited to the outside dining experiencewhere young children could happily roam and we could all bask in naturalsunlight.
Having the setting sorted, we moved onto the all important menu. Therewas a fabulous selection of starters, from cream of celeriac soup to freshCornish crab tart with crème fraiche and fish cream sauce, with pricesranging from £5.95 to £7.50. The mains menu boasts 3 roasts: 28 day agedScotch roast beef, loin of local pork and English lamb. These were comple-mented with home-made horseradish, bramley apple or mint sauces re-spectively. The children were able to have a smaller portion of theirchoice of roast, macaroni cheese or scampi and chips. It was great to seea variety of other dishes on offer as well; monkfish and king prawn Thaigreen curry to vegetarian linguini with ratatouille and grilled goat’scheese. Prices for the mains ranged from £11.95-£15.95. For dessert, thestars were the all-time home made favourites of sticky toffee pudding, forest fruit tart with clotted cream and warm Bakewell tart with morellocherry ice-cream. They also offer up to 6 flavours of ice-cream, which isgreat for the kids – 2 scoops at £4 or 3 scoops for £5.50.
After much consideration, we decided to have a chicken liver pate for thestarter. It arrived with salted French toast and delicious home-madechutney. Being concerned that most of this would be confiscated by thekids, we ordered extra toast. I was delighted with the response from thewaiting staff; yes that would be no problem, but would you like thechildren’s meals to come out at the same time as the starter? This simpleyet helpful offer solved ‘hungry’ issues and the children were happy toeat their roast beef whilst we leisurely dined on our starter. The pâté wassmooth, flavoursome and well-textured, whilst the salted toast enhancedthe flavours.
Our roasts were beautifully presented, the meat carefully cut and ar-ranged. I opted for the lamb, which was tender and infused with freshgarlic and rosemary. The vegetables were served on a side dish; carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower cheese and a pumpkin and swede mash. Allwere piping hot and cooked to perfection. The gravy was rich with flavour, the result of it having been cooked traditionally from stock. I couldn’thelp but eye up my husband’s roast pork which was served with crispsalted crackling and leek stuffing, which was going down very well.
Unfortunately for us, we couldn’t squeeze in any desserts – albeit verytempting!
The wine list is varied with up to 25 wines available by the bottle and fourwhites, reds and a rosé available by small or large glass. In addition, thereis an extensive range of lagers and beers on tap and in bottle.
The team behind the Blowing Stone are committed to presenting foodthat is sourced from local suppliers wherever possible and it is all cookedon the premises from scratch, from fresh ingredients.
From my personal experience, The BlowingStone is certainly on Oxfordshire’s culinarymap!

If you are looking for good, old fashioned service from a friendlyface, then Brooks’s Bakery & Coffee Shop in High St, Highworth, with its exposed oak beams and olde worlde character, is the per-fect place. In fact, we'd like to think that this 16th century shop, with its view of the Market Square, is such a delight that it would beeasy to spend the whole afternoon there watching the world go by.
For those in a rush, however, Brooks's prompt and efficientcounter service can always pre-prepare rolls, sandwiches and cakesto order, for collection at lunchtime. It serves freshly baked breadsinclude traditional loaves, overnight bread, olive & cereal batards, tomato, triple grain, and many more. There are also speciality cakesof a more unusual variety, from parsnip cake to banana and beet-root and many more, to take away or eat in with a great selectionof hot meals and Brooks's specials, from breakfast, light lunches andafternoon teas. Hot food is served from 8am to 4pm closing at 5pm.Our breakfast menu is available on Sunday mornings between 9amand 12 noon. There is also a working lunch & take away buffet menuand celebration cakes.
Brooks’s Bistro & Wine Bar is a converted basement under Brooks’scoffee shop. There is something strangely exciting about eatingunderground, like dining in a secret hideaway, and the decor andfriendly staff add to the atmosphere of the cellar. Tea, coffee andcakes are served “early” evening. Real ales, wines etc. can be hadfrom the bar. Food is served on wooden platters , to share, with achoice of side orders, and are easy on the wallet. Once a month onthe second Tuesday there is a specials night: a sample menu wouldbe Pie, Pudding: Pasta + Btl. Wine for an all in price of £10.50 perperson.

Faringdon FarcyclesThe Farcycles provide a home for cyclists in the Faringdonarea. They are people who like to cycle in a group but in aless formal way than the mainstream organisations andclubs. In other words, it is a bunch of like-minded bikers, both female and male, who join up for the companionshipof riding together.
Unlike the more formal organisations, we do not ask forsubscriptions. This means that we do not carry insuranceand we do expect individuals to make their own arrange-ments as they see fit. There is also no formal leader forindividual rides although routes are circulated to a list offriends in advance. These are completely optional sugges-tions – the way the route-setter might go if he or she wason the ride - it is each person’s choice if he or she wants tofollow the suggested route.
All current rides start from Faringdon’s Market Place onSaturday mornings. We generally go out on every weekof the year, irrespective of the weather. This is made pos-sible because our list of friends runs to about 120 house-holds of whom 20-30 people turn out on any particularSaturday.
The core rides all start promptly at 9 am. These are: A short ride of 12-16 miles which usually stops for tea
along the way An intermediate ride of 20-30 miles A longer ride of 30-45 miles that often follows the
same route as the intermediate ride, with some exten-sions.
In addition, there is a 5-6 mile route for people who wantto meet a little later. The start time for people wanting todo this ride is 10 am.
Because we don’t ask anybody to commit to pitching upon any particular day, we cannot guarantee that any par-ticular ride will be well supported in a specific week. Forthis reason, people who are keen to go for the two short-er rides are encouraged to use the Facebook group “Far-cycles” to communicate with each other to ensure theyhave companions for any given ride.
Occasionally we also organise special events ranging fromthe mildly competitive to the very laid back, such as pubrides. Have a look at Facebook for pictures (and, by allmeans, load your own). Oh, and in good weather we mayalso go for a bit of off-roading on Wednesday evenings.
Finally, the Farcycles came together to promote cycling inour area because it is fun and it is healthy. It is also verysociable and many new friendships have formed from itsexistence. Everyone is welcome. Just pitch up when youfeel like it. There is no commit-ment other than a smile and tolook after your own wellbeingand that of your fellow travel-lers.
