We have two social events in November: the first will be the ever-popularBelgium night at the Blackheath Harriers clubhouse in Hayes – 7.30 for 8.00.I already have a lot of bookings and so, if you would like to be there, phoneme.

Our annual pilgrimage for the Remembrance Service, for our members lost inthe Two World War. As usual we meet at The George Inn at Newnham atapproximately 9.30 a.m. For coffee and then on to the church service at10.30, after which comes the wreath-laying by our President Malcolm. I willbe booking lunches at The George Inn so let me know a.s.a.p. So that I cangive the numbers to the landlord.

President’s ReportFirstly, congratulations to Roy intaking the bronze in the 75+ group ofthe World Masters. In the qualifyinground he was up against a youngster(70-74 group) and Roy caught himand in the ride off for bronze he was only about 4 bikelengths away from lapping this opponent as well. Greateffort Roy!

Also well done to Alan, he held the pole position forquite a while in the qualifying round, also having caughthis opponent, with a 2.52.172 sec ride. Riders cameand went, then a blistering ride of 2.41.607secrelegated Alan to second, it now became nail bitingtime, would Alan still be in with a chance? Then, withthree pairs to go, in a blink of an eye, Alan wasrelegated to 5th so sadly out of the medals. This wasstill great effort considering he has not ridden apursuit for over 50 years and with only a briefintroduction to the boards, once at Calshot and onceat Newport and never having used a starting gate. Ibelieve that had he had the experience his opponentshad, he would have at least got the bronze (.87 of asecond between 4th qualifier and Alan).

There was quite a group of us to support Roy and Alan

4

namely Brian Dacey, Peter Jenn, Franny Rudd (although he was there forhis son Danny) the whole Rowe family, Lyn and I.

The Sunday before saw many De Laune out at the Catford Hill Climb somewho then went on to the ‘Bec’ in the afternoon, always a great day out, foryou never know who you might bump into.

I am writing this under a bit of pressure as I am off to Cornwall very shortlyand will not be back until after the DLN deadline for November so hopefullysee many of you at the Belgium Night and Newnham.

BRONZE MEDAL for ROY

Below you can see the members, wives and friends that enjoyed a verysplendid lunch at Don and Beryl’s recently, we were there to meet our memberJohn Darroch and his wife Jepp who were making one of their rare visits tothe UK. Also there but not in the photo was Alan Rowe, John Wooldridge(Kentish Wheeler) and his wife, John’s brother and sister in law and I almostforgot behind the camera.

From the TreasuryAs the November report started last year - this one can be introduced inthe same way by recording that another competitive season has come to aclose with the hill climb which was held on one of those beautiful autumnaldays in October. Christian was revealed as the fastest climber for 2011with Jon a close second. After the competitions though come the socialactivities with the prize presentation night (Belgium Night), KCA ReliabilityRide and Newnham.

New members for 1960 included Charlie Gosling, Kenneth Legge, ErnieScally, Len Brown, Clif Pendleton, Brian Shambrook, Peter Jenn, AdrianLittlebury, Brian Tidbury, Samuel Lawrence, John Cheshire. Tony Purserresigned and Harry Thomas Jnr emigrated to Australia, Mick Jenner left forNew Zealand and John Moss entered holy matrimony.

Problems were being encountered with open promotions primarily the Open100 as at least 40 members were required to help, as a consequence clubmembers were not allowed to ride any other event on that day. Club teamwould be Alan Rowe, John Geoghegan, Tony Peachey and Ron Sheath.Financial losses were made on the Open 25, Open 100, Saturday TrackMeeting in May and on the social held at Herne Hill after the meet, a furtherloss was made on the second Track Meet in July. Serious considerationrequired regarding open promotions required. Ken Hill managed to make 6dprofit on the Crystal Palace circuit event. Despite all these losses similarevents were planned for 1961. London South DC insisted that allcompetitors in time trials on Southern Roads must wear numbers. Itbecame mandatory for Police Notices for all time trials on open roads to besent to the local constabulary.

Members were encouraged to 'get in the swim' by joining the 'water section'.This could prove dangerous especially during the jousting competitions wherelads would lark about in the shallow end by sitting on each others' shouldersand try to knock one another into the water. This almost resulted in abroken nose for Arthur Hill who received a nasty clout from Harry Thomas. All was well after a hospital examination. Action on the M1 motorway wasencountered by Alan Rowe, Max & John Dods, John Double, John Geogheganand Mick Jenner when the car they were travelling in, skidded and overturned. All were unscathed, but hilarity broke out when the mangled remains of thebike, previously on the roof rack, was discovered by the local plod who asked,'who the hell was riding the bike' .

Concerns were raised that too much time was being spent on the speechesat the Club Dinner and could result in dwindling numbers. Various suggestions

were discussed for speeding up proceedings including quicker clearance ofthe tables along with shorter speeches and fewer of them and guests takingtheir drinks to the table.

New members for 1961 included Alan Deeley,Ted McDonald, Dave Hughes,Bruce Anderson, Reg Barnett, Wedding bells rang for Kav & Pat.

It was decided to promote a 2 day event at Crystal Palace highlight wouldbe London-Folkestone-London. Alan Jackson to organise with Pete Ittercarrying out the administration. Riders entrance fee was set at 35/- whichincluded accommodation and meals in Folkestone. Day 1 would consist of73 miles, Day 2 - 85 miles which included 2-3 laps of the Palace. ChrisChataway MP would be invited to attend Crystal Palace. Event would be'supported' by Corona, a soft drink manufacturer who promised £150 towardsthe promotion. Permission to be sought from police to have 60 ridersinstead of the normal limit of 40. Event produced a loss of £20. DennisTarr emerged as the winner.

The perennial problem of clubroom accommodation was re-visited - the NelsonInstitute was not meeting

the needs of the club - various halls were visited and eventually St FaithsChurch Hall was agreed as meeting our needs. It had accommodation for100 bikes, a few cars, alcoholic lubrication point was 10 minutes walk away, and only 1 mile from Herne Hill track. Catering facilities were available -proposition was put forward to allow wives/girlfriends to assist in the runningof the canteen - proposition lost 7 for 8 against, the next committee meetingreversed this decision. Reg Dawkins & Bill Miles acted as Canteen Managers.Ladies of the canteen were Min Dawkins, Di Peachey and Amy Thomas whobaked and cooked various delights each week, producing 15/- per week profitfor club funds. Each were presented a box of chocolates at the club dinner.Other mums/wives/girlfriends assisted from time to time. DLN were firstsent by post in May 1961. Problems re-emerged of members' playing cardsuntil late in the evening & not clearing ashtrays before leaving.

Ken Fuller promoted the National Cyclo Cross Championship at Cobham, managing to finish 11th following a mix up at the start. Dennis Tarr won a

8

stage of Tour of Britain.

Invitations for the 1961 dinner were extended to Stan Newport, SandyHoldsworth (cycle retailer) Lt. Col Adler, police superintendent Woking andAtkins National Cyclo Cross Champion (club only to pay 2nd class rail fare).Suggestion that 3 packets of cigarettes on each table was not agreed.150 diners were catered for but some members complained of long speeches, and lack of time for dancing. Bill Miles awarded gold badge of honour, organisation of dinner and various other duties carried out during the year, while Peter Staff was awarded the Silverdale How Shield.

All information and snippets of club life have been culled fromminutes + DLN publications

Books aimed at female riders and accounting for differences (minor really) in physiologyetc that afftect nutrition etc. May be of interest. Final book is of geenral social interestI think.Bicycling for Women book

(Aimedat kids, so an easy read on the turbo-trainer I suspect..) Looking at the blurb, it seemsMarie Curie and Annie Oakley were cyclists. (I bet no-one cut Annie up on her biketwice...) I think I saw somewhere that there was a cycling link to EmilyPankhurst somewhere along the line too. Even if you don't get the book, someorf the comments include interesting snippets.

Vo2Max Enhancement ClaimZipVit are making the interesting claim that their ZV Maxproduct can significantly boost Vo2Max and anaerobicthreshold by phosphate loading your blood:

"Scientific studies show ZV Max’s exclusive phosphate formulacould boost VO2 max by 6 to 12% and anaerobic thresholdby 10 to 12%. In cyclists this can translate to 20% moreendurance and an increase in power of 9.8% during a 10 miletime trial 1 and 8% over a 40km time trial 4. These changesdon’t occur immediately and during loading it takes 3 daysfor the levels of phosphates to accumulate sufficiently toalter 2,3-diphosphoglycerate. Continuing supplementation allows performancegains to be maintained for up to three days, making ZV Max perfect for useduring tapering to peak for important events. "Matt Bottrill (Team I-Ride), winner of 2011 Rudy Project National Time TrialSeries claimed 3% (10 watts) improvement in his numbers and 9% (30 watts)improvement for 30second efforts. United Healthcare and Canadianteam-member Chrisitan Meier was also complimentary.Might be worth checking out, though I have to admit that, though it'sevidently legal, I'm not completely convinced it's ethical to use this sort ofproduct.

FAUNCES & DE LAUNESAs you know last month I wrote that we (the few) took a visit to DoddingtonChurch and as I shall be away for much of October, leaving little time to spendon research, I have copied this article from Alan Delaune Faunce’s ‘A Familythat went out to the World’

DODDINGTON CHURCH

To the right of the Sharsted Chapel are these stained glass windows andthe self explanatory plaque. The mystery to me is I have no recordedevidence of our Founder having a sister. I am contacting my familyresearcher in America to see what he can come up with.

It appears I can’t sort the wood from the trees for after I had a reply fromAmerica I located Ann and also another sibling Edmund Gladwin. Ann wasthe eldest born 13th October 1841 and Edmund 13th April 1846. The number13 was certainly unlucky for both of them as they both died in their twenties. Our founder was the middle child and fortunately for him, and us, he wasborn 7th May 1843, even so he did not enjoy a long life as he was only 49when he died.

As usual the Belgium night will be heavily subsidised by the club- a gesture to the non-active/non-competitive members, where they can benefit fromthe Memorial Fund interest monies.

I am sure anyone who has attended this function in the past will agree thatthe trusty team of organisers work really hard to make the event a success, and that is exactly what it is. The Club entry this year for the KCAreliability ride boasts 20 riders in various categories. Once again the clubhas paid the entry fee.

The medal/trophy invoice is likely to be a little high again this year - mainlybecause we have had to replace the 10 and 25 record plaques, the originalones are unaccounted for, despite endless searching and enquiries.

Affiliations for 2012 have been met for Cycling Time Trials, Kent CyclingAssociation, Southern Counties, Cyclist Touring Club, Road RecordsAssociation and SE Road Race League. Still outstanding is British Cycling- awaiting their request. Also paid for 2012 are the hall hire charges forour 2 open time trial promotions of the 10 and 25.

A further small clothing order was submitted after the last committeemeeting. Despite notes on the forum and in the DLN no advance requests

for clothing were received therefore only a replacementorder was submitted. Way back in June we placed a minimum order for 144racing caps. Unfortunately 44 of these were not up to standard and wererejected. The company despatched an invoice for 100 which has been met. However, Jayne has now received 44 replacement hats, therefore a furtherinvoice for around £180 is outstanding.

A bit hurried from me this month as I am still catching up on home issuesafter a short walking break with Claire in the New Forest. We had gloriouslysunny weather, loads of wildlife spotting and an additional 40 miles to addto my annual target of 1,000 walking where I am nicely on track.Val the Peach
