“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new Creation; the old has passed away, the new has come . . . “ 1 Cor. 5:17
A little over a year ago, Jeff Hansen came to Olympia Union Gospel Mission as a volunteer. But he soon discovered those he came to help would be the key to his own life transformation. Jeff served in the military for ten years as a clinical psychologist; but when he left the military, he wanted to try something new, so he ventured into the world of real estate investment. “The world tells us that money and things are what’s important,” said Jeff, who wanted some of that worldly wealth, because in the military, he often struggled financially. He did well in real estate and thought his financial worries were over. “Then the market crashed and so did my sense of safety and security. I became depressed and lost my way. I know a depressed psychologist sounds strange, but that’s what I was.” Jeff didn’t know where to turn: then he remembered an old client from his psychologist days who mentioned he’d found help at Olympia Union Gospel Mission. The thought stayed with him and he wanted to see what he could do to help. He didn’t want to serve in a clinicial way: just get to know the clients and share his own story. “Helping others at the Mission be-came a part of my therapy and helped me over my depression.” Now Jeff comes to the Mission every Monday, and during his time here, he’s learned that his security
is not in what he owns. “Stuff can go away at any time, and where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” “At the Mission, I see a lot of pain. Seeing others’ pain has helped me understand my own. Everyone here has a story and there is always some-one out there who is worse off than you.” Jeff believes that Bible Studies led by Pastor Denny Bobbert have been good for him and brought him a lot of peace, while volunteering gives him a chance to share the gospel and his personal testimony. He is especially fond of a Mission guest who calls her-self Stormy. “Stormy lived on the wrong side of the tracks-she did everything wrong you can imagine-but then she found the Lord and it radically changed her life. She has no earthly possessions, no home, but is just grateful for every day. I’ve had many talks with her and I find her so encouraging.” “The staff and volunteers at the Mission really seem to care about the people they serve, and that’s what hurting people need most: to hear that they are loved and someone cares about them. Many were close to suicide until they came to the Mission. They just need to know they matter and to recieve a touch and a smile,” he said. For the last six years, the Mission, and this publication, have benefited from the creative energy of Virginia Schnabel, Development Director. So it is with mixed emotions that I bid farewell to Virginia after many years of working together. I will miss the collaboration and her insight very much, but also accept her conclusion that it is time for her to take on new and yet undetermined professional challenges. Thanks “Virg”!! As the State continues to cut benefits, I can detect a noticeable difference in the level of need in the community for basic and health services. OUGM is serving more meals and I get a sense of more desperation among the low income population as tempers seem to flare more frequently. More clients with mental illness are coming to the Mission, creating an added burden on staff to both show compassion, and maintain order. More low income and uninsured adults are directed to the Mission, especially for dental care. There is now a three week wait time for new appointments in the Chronic Disease Medical Clinic. The number of medically compromised patients seeking help in the dental clinic is increasing. Patients whose surgeries and cancer treatments are delayed until dental infection and disease are resolved are also being referred in increasing numbers. It is evident from these facts that the poor and vulnerable need the Mission more than ever; and OUGM needs your financial support, prayers and volunteerism more than ever. Vulnerable members of our community are facing a battle that is both physical and spiritual, but God’s work through the Mission will prevail, if our supporters continue to stand with us. I want to conclude with an invitation for people who value the work of Rescue, and who have a desire to spread the word about the work God is doing in Thurston County, to join OUGM’s Board of Directors. Serving on the Board is the best way to help influence the direction the Mission takes in the future, and to show your support for the staff and volunteers who daily serve on the front lines. If you would like to learn more, please contact me at 709-9725. I’ll be waiting for your call.

Just four years ago, Lee Edwards was assisting Dr. George Gunderson, DDS, as a pre-dental sudent during extraction clinics at OUGM’s No-fee Dental Clinic. But her goal was to become a dentist herself, so after finishing her pre-dental exams near the top of her class, Lee was accepted into dental school at the University of Washington, (UW). She moved to Seattle and took with her a year’s worth of clinic experience and training provided by Dr. Gunderson. In early 2011, Lee became Dr. Lee Edwards, DDS, when she graduated fifth in her dental class at UW’s School of Dentistry. Now Dr. Edwards works with Dr. Jack Cox, DDS, and Dr. Eugene Peeples, DDS, both of whom she met during her volunteer days at OUGM. OUGM’s Clinic Manager, Linda Barrett, great-ly missed Dr. Edwards while she was away, and when she learned she was back in town, contacted her and asked if she would come back, only this time, Dr. Edwards would be the dentist rather than the assistant. September was Dr. Edwards’ first month back at OUGM and she said she is glad to be here. “I feel like it’s important to give back to our community, and the Mission plays a huge role in being able to help people, so I thought it was important to be here,” she said. On her first day back, Dr. Edwards performed an exam and handled two fillings. “It feels good to be able to help those with serious issues and to give them direction. I like dentistry because you can have a real impact on people’s health, and you can teach them what’s going on with their teeth,” said Dr. Ed-wards, adding, “both of my parents are teach-ers and I see that as being a big part of my dentistry.” OUGM is happy Dr. Edwards is back as a volunteer and to know that the Mission played a small part in helping her reach her career goals.

The Beat Goes On for OUGM Dental Clinic A heartfelt thanks goes out to all of OUGM’s volunteer dental professionals, not only for the hours they donate to the clinic, but also for their financial contri-butions and support of OUGM’s annual dental clinic benefit concert. This year’s concert took place Satur-day, October 22 at the Washington Cen-ter for the Performing Arts. About 700 people turned out to cheer on our dental performers, the Olympia Jazz Senators, swing dancers, vocalists from Saint Mar-tins University Concert Choir, Church of Living Water and the community, three professional vocalists, and dancers from Debbi’s Dance, Etc. Attendees shared an amazing evening of glorifying God, and had an opportu-nity to hear from several dental clinic patients who were blessed to receive services at the clinic. Concert proceeds benefit no-fee care for low income, un-insured individuals. If you missed out on this year’s concert, check out the pics at ougm.org.
Thank you Concert Sponsors!

Major Clinic Donors 2011
In 2011, 2,600 no-fee dental appointments were provided through Olympia Union Gospel Mission’s No-fee Dental Clinic. This care was made possible through the generous financial dona-tions of individuals, foundations, concert and clinic sponsors, as well as the volunteer support of 75 local dental professionals. OUGM’s No-fee Health Resource Center is a one of a kind community collaboration and we are constantly amazed at how God continues to provide for Thurston County’s needy through the generosity of their friends and neighbors. In this season of giving thanks, we give thanks for each and every one of YOU!.

OUGM’s medical clinic recently benefitted from the generosity of medical volunteers when several doctors donated viles of flu vaccine and money to sponsor a free flu clinic at the Mission. Over 100 people received shots, and according to Medical Clinic Manager Marissa Altimirano-Cruz, 100 other people were turned away when the vaccine ran out. OUGM is thankful to all those who give so generously to serve their neighbors in need.
