According to IDC, LTO-5 tape drive shipments continued to show strong momentum in 2011, increasing by 343% year on year in Q2 2011– the fifth consecutive quarter of growth.

The popularity of LTO-5 tape drives reflects continuing industry recognition of the role tape can play. In both server attach and automation platforms, tape delivers cost-effective, high capacity and long-term data protection, compliance and archival for the growing data volumes associated with today’s content rich, high capacity applications.

Strong market traction for LTO-5 Tape drives means that, according to IDC, LTO-5 already accounts for 39% of total LTO market shipments in only its fifth full quarter of shipping. This rapid LTO-5 market unit ramp compares favourably with the initial market ramps of LTO-4 and LTO-3. One contributory factor to LTO-5’s faster ramp as a percentage of the total market relates to the fact the LTO-5 full-height (FH) and LTO-5 half-height (HH) were launched concurrently, whereas with LTO-4 and LTO-3 the HH product market introduction lagged the FH product market introduction.

Fuji Tv Computer Graphics department chooses LTo-5 with LTFS to meet rising data archival demandsPrevious editions of the Tape-IT newsletter have covered the needs of the broadcasting industry for cost-effective storage for the digitising and archiving of video content.

Rising content capacities are driving broadcasters to digital tape as a solution, and Fuji TV is no exception.

Fuji Television is Japan’s leading TV broadcaster. Formed in 1959, it is based in Tokyo but operates through 28 regional affiliates. It also broadcasts Japanese entertainment, news and sports content in Europe and North America. With data levels rising by a factor of 6x within six years due to emerging High Definition video data, Fuji’s existing LTO-2 based tape archival solution had become complex and inefficient; and so began the search for a new solution.

Choosing LTO-5 tape with LTFS for archivalHaving looked at other technologies, Fuji TV quickly determined that digital tape was still the best solution for long-term archive due to shelf-life, additional reliability, and cost advantages. Kiyoshi Arai, the Department Manager responsible for selecting the future technology for Fuji Television Network Inc explains;

“With archiving applications that save data over the long term, there’s a big advantage with tape. If stored properly, it’s clearly more secure than storing on an optical disk or hard disk. There’s a proven record with long-term storage of video.”

LTO-5 Tape Drives with LTFS soon became the preferred solution by offering up to 1.5TBs of native capacity and speeds of up to 500GB per hour. LTFS makes tape self-describing, file-based and

easy-to-use, providing Fuji TV graphic designers with the ability to use standard file operations on tape media for accessing, managing, sharing and archiving files with an interface that behaves just like a hard disk.

The business benefits: how LTO-5 with LTFS improved Fuji TV’s archiving Before implementing the LTO-5 solution, the process to archive footage and animation data involved sending a request to a system engineer who would manage the transfer of appropriate files from a file server to the backup server, and from there, dedicated software would be used to write the file to a tape. Frequently the amount of data to be backed up exceeded the 200GB available with the LTO-2 archival system, making it difficult to fit a single project on one tape.

With the new LTO-5 system, the graphic designers are able to perform archiving themselves. LTO-5 with LTFS functionality, integrated with Fuji TV’s media asset management system, makes it easy for users to drag and drop files directly to a tape from a file server, and to be able to find and restore individual pieces of footage or animation that have been archived to tape. Fuji TV has made the system even easier by customising user icons on the desktop, making it possible for anyone to archive without needing special training, freeing system engineers from the burden of managing numerous individual archive projects.

“When archiving or retrieving data, users aren’t conscious of the tape drive at all. This is the biggest change. I think the designers also feel a little less stress too…things have become more convenient and easier,” says Yosuke Nakayama, a computer graphics system engineer at Fuji Television

Using LTO-5 has significantly reduced the time taken to complete data archiving at Fuji TV. It has also

reduced the strain on IT resources and demonstrably increased productivity. Previously with LTO-2 a whole day could be wasted in managing data and saving it to multiple different tapes! LTO-5 can hold around seven times as much capacity as LTO-2 so Fuji Television now frequently stores multiple projects on the same tape, reducing the number of tapes needed.

“From the producer’s perspective, cost is the top concern. Introduction of the LTO-5 Tape Drive will make producers happy, too” says Kiyoshi Arai

Looking to the future with LTO-5 and LTFSFuji TV is now looking to expand their LTO-5 with LTFS archiving operation, as Kiyoshi Arai suggests;

“We manage a dedicated system for modifying and processing location shoots so going forward we may be able to use the HP LTO-5 for archiving this data as well.”

“From the producer’s perspective, cost is the top concern. Introduction of the LTO-5 Tape Drive will make producers happy, too” Kiyoshi Arai, Fuji TV.

In summaryBy replacing the LTO-2 solution with LTO-5 with LTFS for digital archiving, Fuji TV was able to benefit from:

IT improvements• Enabled designers to archive and

retrieve computer graphic files to and from a single LTO-5 cartridge through simple drag and drop, improving efficiency

• Computer graphic files stored on tape appear on the desktop in the same way as a disk directory listing, providing faster access to data

• Expanded individual tape storage capacity 7.5x from 200GB to 1.5TB

• Increased data transfer speed 3.47x from 144GB/hour to 500GB/hour

• Realised an environment in which designers can directly access archived work

Business benefits• More efficient work flow with

designers now able to perform backup and restore operations themselves, freeing up system engineers for other projects

• Significantly reduced time taken to complete archiving, improving business productivity

• High capacity tapes enable the storage of multiple projects, reducing cost by using fewer tapes

In SummaryThe media and entertainment industry is increasingly challenged by the need for high quality video capture and massive data volumes, with long-term asset retention and utilisation. Analysts Coughlin Associates estimate that between 2011 and 2016 the media and entertainment industry will experience a 7.7x increase in the required digital storage capacity.

In this landscape, LTO tape solutions in general, and LTO-5 with LTFS in particular, is becoming increasingly prominent, gaining awards and recognition for new products and solutions that support different application areas. LTO delivers the foundation necessary for cost-effective storage for assets, and the long-term dependability needed to support asset repurposing. LTFS further enhances the solution by facilitating file management through the digital workflow.

Expanding ApplicationsUK’s largest commercial television network to archive acquired content on LTO-5

ITV, the largest commercial television network in the UK, will archive acquired content to LTO-5 as part of a renewal of the broadcaster’s deal with content services firm ITFC.

Montreux Jazz Festival relies on LTO for a 1.2PB digital archive

Forty years worth of performances at Europe’s most prestigious jazz festival will soon be stored in a digital archive with up to 1.2 petabytes of capacity, and over 10,000 hours of recordings that will be shared with students and in cafés around the world. Jazz performances from Sting, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, plus rock sessions from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd will be retained on LTO tape cartridges to ensure that the priceless performance footage is never lost.

Automating archive procedures

A LTO tape library plays a key role in the automated content archive and storage management solution for Estonia-based media and entertainment playout provider, Levira. A major factor in the decision to implement a new solution was the need to automate and simplify archiving to keep pace with major expansion of digital workflows in order to provide increased channel capacity. Maksim Butsenko, Technical Manager at Levira playout centre explained:

“Our aim is to have a fully digitised automation, MAM (media asset management) and archive workflow to reduce user interaction. The systems will communicate with each other

and inform operators of results or problems. This will mean that staff will simply monitor quality and equipment performance. Our automation system will provide notification to the FlashNet software regarding any missing content, which can then be restored automatically from LTO tape to NAS and pushed to the playout server.”

LTO-5 based Storage and Archive Systems Improve Performance and Provide Peace of Mind

Boutique production company LionStar Films of Atlanta desperately needed an improved archival solution to protect its raw materials. Shooting straight to card P2, SD and CF the company had been backing up its projects on two hard drives but soon recognised the issues of reliability and management overheads involved in this approach.

In order to protect its critical video and audio assets LionStar installed a Small Trees GraniteSTOR ST-Vault, a robust tape storage system featuring the latest LTO-5 tape technology capable of storing up to 3TB per cartridge.

“Small Trees ST-Vault has provided us with peace of mind”, remarked Ryan Seger, founder and owner of LionStar. “Now, when we put footage on the server to start editing, we also back it up on the ST-Vault so we know we’ll have access to the projects raw materials in the future.”

New LTO based solutionsXenData Launches SX-10 LTO Video Archive Appliance

XenData’s new archive appliance provides up to 75TB of near-line LTO automation and unlimited offline LTO media storage for video production and post-production applications.
