Although the school is not based primarily on religion, it is founded on the belief that all children are precious in God’s sight and are deserving of love, attention and nurturing. Once a month the children in the preschool meet with the church’s pastor and hear about how God loves us and how He wants us to treat each other. I visited the school to learn more about the programs and met with TriniKids director, Sharon Scott. The preschool began in 1993, with class sizes now ranging from 15-20 students each. The Explorers program is in its third year and was spun off of the preschool when parents began looking for a program that would encourage social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual skills. Teachers are Mrs. Sandy and Mrs. Mahon, who also teach the preschool classes with Sharon. Sharon explained that TriniKids is a discovery- based learning program which consists of eight self-contained, theme-based units. Each unit includes four to six class sessions which contain hands-on learning activities, themed crafts, songs, poems, science experiments and games. Parents can sign their child up for as many of the units as they would like. The cost is based on the number of classes, with tuition the same for members of the community and the congregation. Themes this year include: • Fun With Food: A finger-lickin’ good time as children role play, experiment, create and have fun with food. Daily themes include spaghetti and meatballs, potatoes, strawberries, desserts, and adventures through Candyland. • Shake, Rattle and Roll (The Joy of Music): Children will sing, dance and celebrate their way through the wonderful world of music as they learn about the kinds of instruments, music concepts, and participate in band day. • Christmas Around the World: Children “travel” to Mexico, Germany, Holland and Bethlehem to learn about the various traditions associated with this joyful season. • 3-2-1 Blast Off, Exploring Space: Prepare for a cosmic adventure as children hop aboard a space shuttle to visit planets, stars, and galaxies. • Dinosaurs: Children become paleontologists as they dig for fossils and learn about the world of prehistoric dinosaurs. • Hats Galore: Try on a different hat and become a pirate, a construction worker or a cowboy, then enter the rhyming world of Dr. Seuss. • Bugs and Blooms - Gardening Fun: Learn why owers and bugs need each other as the class studies about bees and daffodils, ladybugs and tulips, caterpillars and sunflowers, or butterflies and daisies. • Fun With Sports and Games: Everyone’s a winner as the class participates in different sports seasons, the Olympics, Carnival Day, Birthday Day, all while learning about exercise and nutrition While the preschool program is more about preparing the children for school, the Explorers program was developed as a discovery-based activity program. Children are encouraged to learn and explore through hands-on activities, role playing, and experimenting. There is also a real emphasis on character development issues such as sharing, taking turns, using words to be kind, and listening. The goal is to instill characteristics that children who are aware of others should possess. Once a month the children in the preschool meet with the church’s pastor and hear about how God loves us and how He wants us to treat each other.

Sharon explained that TriniKids is a discovery-based learning program which consists of eight self-contained, theme-based units. You’ve probably seen one of their shows and never realized it. It’s a common statement the team hears. Lion and Lamb Productions has been formally in place since 2006, but the shows have been around much longer than that. Founder, Pastor Dave (known as PD) started producing plays while on staff at a local church in Lockport, NY. These shows grew and thousands made a trip to the Historic Palace Theater a yearly event just to see these productions. As the shows began to travel throughout NY and Canada, PD felt called to start a ministry outside the local church as an evangelistic

outreach. With the support of his church, family and team of volunteers, he resigned his position at the church to form Encompass Ministries, a religious non-profit organization and the covering ministry for Lion and Lamb Productions.

Lion and Lamb Productions then began looking for a facility to house the productions. After surveying several buildings in the Niagara Falls area, the organization accepted an invitation to join the Gersh Organization at their 621 Payne Ave location. Now blessed with an 800 seat auditorium, this ministry can expand and flourish.

“This will be our third year of producing our Christmas Show at the theater. We’ve started slow, putting our major efforts into restoring the building, and now it’s time to invite the crowds back to see the shows they’ve grown to know and love” says PD. Many of the cast members return each year to recreate their roles, but they are always looking for new talent to add to the productions. “Our purpose is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the medium of the Arts.” Right now Lion and Lamb produces two shows a year; “A Hammer and Three Nails” their Easter Show, and the upcoming Christmas performance of “The Glory of Christmas”.

As with any local community theater they are in need of actors as well as technical and back stage help. Rehearsals are held once a week up to a few weeks before a production and then a schedule of rehearsals are set as needed to produce the show with high quality. Sets are built on site and a crew meets each week.

This year’s Christmas Show, “The Glory of Christmas” will be held December 7 at 7:30pm and December 8th

at 3 and 7PM. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door. The Theater is located at 621 Payne Ave in the former Lowry Middle School

November 2012 — Neighbor Link News — 3

My heart was wounded and I lived in a state of constant battle with fear, fear of rejection, doubt, unbelief, anger, hatred, rage, and lust. I needed help!I discovered awonderful Spirit-filled prayer counselor who together with her husband prayed with me for about three hours. And I was free! The war was over! I was thrilled.I spent the next two

months searching for and memorizing verses which would close the door so that the above negative spiritual strongholds could not come back. I memorized verses on the opposite side of the coin from the issues I had been delivered from. For example, to keep anger out, I memorized verses on love and mercy and forgiveness. To keep fear out, I memorized

verses on faith and trust and belief, and so on.I also did extensive two-way journaling where I asked God what He wanted to show me about these areas, so I could think differently and respond differently when tempted to go back into my old ungodly thought patterns. His daily counsel through journaling wasinvaluable! One journal entry which was completely life transforming was this: “Mark, whatever you fix your eyes upon, grows within you, and whatever grows within you, you become.” God taught me never to look at my sin or my weakness or my strength, but to look only at Him. This way Jesus grew within me and I became Christ-like, because I become a reflection of that which I fix my eyes upon. The lady who prayed for me had prayed seven specific prayers with me. I have written about these seven prayers in my book Prayers that Heal the Heart and we also have created CDs DVDs and a LEARN workbook to help others who are

struggling to become emotionally free.Paul Mortimer from England states: “I’ve read many, many books on curses, healing and deliverance and even though I have had much prayer ministry, the key root issues didn’t seem to be dealt with.  After only a couple of days with your teaching, I have found amazing healing through the prayers, and in particular using vision to re-visit traumatic experiences of the past and see Jesus begin healing my wounded heart.” Dr. Joy Hong of New York City shares: “I was taught to apply 7 specific prayers and as I prayed through each prayer I began to feel lighter in my chest and in my spirit. As I finished repenting of my negative expectations and inner vows I felt so much lighter and better.“Then I invited Jesus to come into the traumatic pictures in my mind of things that had happened in my past. I was able to see these negative pictures in a new light as I saw Jesus there, moving and doing things. Finally I was

able to interpret these events positively. I felt relieved and free from the negative power of these past memories.”

The seven prayers are: breaking generational sins and curses, severing ungodly soul ties, repenting of ungodly beliefs, renouncing inner vows, receiving inner healing, breaking word curses, and finally deliverance. And don’t forget the

follow up two-way journaling and Bible meditation. They are essential!Training materials for Prayers That Heal the Heart and How to Hear God’s Voice are available from Communion With God Ministries 716-681-4896 or www.CWGMinistries.org.

During circle time the teachers and children talked about potatoes and how they grow. Then they moved on to the role playing area where they were able to dig potatoes out of the ground, transport them by tractor to a cleaning station, move them to a bagging area, pack them in a truck for transportation to a store, or purchase potatoes at the market to take home and prepare in their kitchen. Arts and crafts included potato prints and making a potato person. Games included PlayDo potatoes, Mr. Potato Head and potato relays.

What Is Cholesterol?ON

To understand high blood cholesterol (ko-LES-ter-ol), it is important to know more about cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. Your body needs some cholesterol to work the right way. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Cholesterol is also found in some of the foods you eat. Your body uses cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Blood is watery, and cholesterol is fatty. Just like oil and water, the two do not mix. To travel in the bloodstream, cholesterol is carried in small packages called lipoproteins (lip-o-PRO-teens). The small packages are made of fat (lipid) on the inside and proteins on the outside. Two kinds of lipoproteins carry cholesterol throughout your body. It is important to have healthy levels of both:

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is sometimes called bad cholesterol. High LDL cholesterol leads to a buildup of cholesterol in arteries. The higher the LDL level in your blood, the greater chance you have of getting heart disease. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is sometimes called good cholesterol. HDL

carries cholesterol from other parts of your body back to your liver. The liver removes the cholesterol from your body. The higher your HDL cholesterol level, the lower your chance of getting heart disease.

What Is High Blood Cholesterol? Too much cholesterol in the blood, or high blood cholesterol, can be serious. People with high blood cholesterol have a greater chance of getting heart disease. High blood cholesterol on its own does not cause symptoms, so many people are unaware that their cholesterol level is too high.

Cholesterol can build up on the walls of your arteries (blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body). This buildup of cholesterol is called plaque (plak). Over time, plaque can cause narrowing of the arteries. This is called atherosclerosis (ath-er-o-skler-O-sis), or hardening of the arteries.

Special arteries, called coronary arteries, bring blood to the heart. Narrowing of your coronary arteries due to plaque can stop or slow down the flow of blood to your

heart. When the arteries narrow, the amount of oxygen-rich blood is decreased. This is called coronary artery disease (CAD). Large plaque areas can lead to chest pain called angina (an-JI-nuh or AN-juh-nuh). Angina happens when the heart does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina is a common symptom of CAD.

Some plaques have a thin covering and burst (rupture), releasing fat and cholesterol into the bloodstream. The release of fat and cholesterol may cause your blood to clot. A clot can block the flow of blood. This blockage can cause angina or a heart attack.

Lowering your cholesterol level decreases your chance for having a plaque burst and cause a heart attack. Lowering cholesterol may also slow down, reduce, or even stop plaque from building up.

Plaque and resulting health problems can also occur in arteries elsewhere in the body.

Just a few weeks ago, we saw many little girls dressed up as princesses, while boys proudly wore a suit of armor as they roamed about the neighborhood gathering Tricks or Treats. One reason royalty appeals to the hearts of children, as well as adults, is that deep down we all feel we are valuable—that we are “royal” every bit as much as they. No matter what the circumstances of our birth, no matter how lowly our situation in in life, we are all children of God and heirs to the kingdom. We can learn, change and grow in ways that enable us to overcome whatever obstacles come our way. Most of us are familiar with the story of Cinderella. Although it is a fairy tale, perhaps there is a moral to the story. Cinderella did not retaliate against wickedness, kept the faith when persecuted, sang songs of hope while forced to do all the dirty work, and knew who her father was before he had died. As a result she was blessed. Jesus asks us to do the same when He said “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 5:10. At the outset of his Gospel,

Matthew established Jesus’ claim to the Kingship of Israel by recording His royal lineage. In the very first sentence, he referred to Jesus as “Christ,” which means the “anointed one.” Then he emphasized Jesus’ relationship to Abraham, the father of the Jewish people, and to King David whose lineage was of the Messiah. If we are to reap the benefits of the throne we must do as Jesus told us and seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33. Many of us expect all “these things” to be added unto us and then try to squeeze God in there somewhere. Then we wonder why He has not blessed our finances, relationships, jobs and “these things.” I don’t expect that a “Fairy God Mother” will appear if we are faithful, but we have a Father God who asks us to put Him first, and promises all His best for those who trust in Him. How and when God blesses us is up to Him. Cinderella knew who her father was- he was nobleman, and loved her very much before his passing. Like Cinderella, if we are to wear our crown, we must understand who our heavenly

Father is. Remember that you my beloved are a prince, a princess grounded in the truth of God, and that’s no fairy tale.Lori JagowDirector of Recovery Care

BY JEFF KEEFE How did these men who were not

from King David’s line and not even ethnic Jews, but from the ancient territory of Edom, get to be kings of the Jews?

A little more than 100 years before the birth of Jesus, John Hyrcanus conquered Idumea (Edom). Hyrcanus was descended from the Jewish family of Mattathias Maccabaeus, the family that led the revolt against the Seleucid Empire. The descendants of the Maccabees became known as Hasmoneans. John Hyrcanus (134-104BC) was strong enough, and with the full support of the Sadducees and the High Priest (but not the Pharisees), to tell the Idumeans that it was necessary that if they wanted to retain their land and their wealth that they would need to convert to Judaism and follow its customs and practices. One of those families that converted was the aristocratic, wealthy and influential family of Antipater.

Alexander Janneus (103-76) became King after the death of his father, John Hyrcanus and a year later, his older brother, Aristobolus (104-103BC). Alexander needed a governor for the Idumaean territory and he chose Antipater. Antipater had diplomatic, political, military skills which were always useful in the ancient world to

those who governed. He had four sons, Phasael, Herod (b.73 BC), Joseph, and Pheroras, and a daughter. After Alexander’s death in 76, his wife, Queen Solome ruled until her death in 67BC. After her death, their two sons, Hyrcanus II and Aristobolus II and supporters of each vied for the Jewish throne. Both brothers appealed to the Roman General Pompey for support. A third group of leading citizens from Judah also appealed to Pompey to have neither as king and someone else as high priest. After some intrigue, misunderstandings and fighting, Hyrcanus II and Pompey united to capture Jerusalem in 63 BC from the supporters of Aristobolus II. He was captured and sent to Rome.

In about 47 BC during an Egyptian civil war, Julius Caesar had become trapped in Cleopatra’s palace in Alexandria. Sent by Hyrcanus II, a small military force led by Antipater, helped other forces rescue Caesar. As a reward, Antipater was made the ruler of Judea. Antipater appointed his son Phasael as governor of Judea, Hyrcanus II was allowed to continue as High Priest. Antipater appointed his 25 year old son Herod (the future Herod the Great) as governor of Galilee.

After Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC and Antipater poisoned in 43 BC, the Parthians invaded nearby

Syria. In Jerusalem Antigonus, a son of Aristobolus II and nephew of Hyrcanus II, with the aid of the Parthians captured Jerusalem. Phasael committed suicide. Antigonus had Hyrcanus II’s ear mutilated, making him unqualified to be High Priest. Herod fled to Rome where the Roman Senate voted Herod the title “King of the Jews.” The last of the Hasmonean Kings, Antigonus II ruled as king in Jerusalem until 37 BC when Herod returned with his army and with forces provided by Marc Antony and captured Jerusalem. Herod rebuilt and greatly expanded the Jerusalem Temple and the Temple Mount. He built the harbor at Caesarea and a palace fit for a king. (It was later to become the residence of Pontius Pilate and other governors). He built palaces at Herodium, Masada and Jericho. He ruled as King of the Jews until his death in 4 BC.

Herod is said to have had five wives and perhaps 15 sons. He killed his favorite wife and at least 3 of his sons. His friend, the Emperor Augustus, is quoted as having said, I’d rather be Herod’s pig than one of his sons. This is the Herod that Matthew the magi encounter on the journey looking for a new born king (Matthew 2).

Two of Herod’s sons ruled during Jesus life, Herod Antipas ruled Galilee and Philip, ruled in Bethsaida, Caesarea

Philip and the area north and east of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus traveled in both their territories. A third son, Archelaus is mentioned in Matt 2:22, Caesar Augustus replace him in 6AD with a procurator after complaints of brutality. It is a grandson of Herod, Herod Agrippa I, that in Acts 12 kills the Apostle James, one of the sons of Zebedee in 44AD. It is his son, Herod Agrippa II, that Paul encounters in Acts 25 in the harbor city of Caesarea (Maritima), built by Herod the Great,

The Herods – father, Herod the Great; sons Herod Antipas, Philip and Archelaus, grandson Herod Agrippa I and great grandson Herod Agrippa II, are all in the New Testament.

BEYOND THE MOUNTAINIn summer; while venturing in Vermont’s vibrant valley,Where without a vivid vision we’d simply dilly-dally,

While treasuring moments, though not keeping a tally,

Of the days we’d dreamed of dining in the ship’s galley!

Though many celebrated when farm markets would rally,

Now as the future swiftly unfolds, revealing a surprise.

With awe; the meaning of life blooms before our eyes.

As age desires an explanation for the lows and the highs,

Bravely; we went beyond the mountain to find what lies,

On the other side; seeking for what makes a man wise!

If life doesn’t leave much, when push comes to shove,

Then this existence must be handled with a velvet glove!

Especially when life is short; with people seeking love,

Only those who surrender; find true love from up-above!
