Some say their one vote doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but look at John Kennedy over Richard Nixon in 1960. The dierence in popular votes was 0.1%, about 100,000 of the 68 million ballots cast. It is easy to extrapolate that just one vote per precinct made a tremendous dierence. The next election is atypical and demands your full attention. There seem to be movements afoot trying to disrupt the ability of all interested voters from casting their ballots – to discourage some from taking the time to go to the polls - trying to develop apathy. These movements are unfortunate, misguided and illegal because they intend to disrupt, intimidate and instill fear in those planning to perform a Constitutional duty and vote for the leaders of our community and country. To paraphrase Malcolm X, it is your duty, to the maximum extent practicable, to see that this does not happen. In October, brothers of Mu Lambda joined with other brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and assisted with registering voters. Now we must expand the task. First of all, make sure you vote! Then assist others in getting to the polls to cast their ballots. It is imperative that as many eligible voters as possible seek incessantly, with or without fear, but trembling with the excitement of voting, to bring about the largest universe of good we can see. My brothers, it is up to us to show the way as much as we possibly can! Hold the light high to see the path to good government for all to see. ’06! President’s Message “There is but one unconditional commandment, which is that we

should seek incessantly, with fear and trembling, so to vote

and to act as to bring about the very largest total universe of

good which we can see. “ - William James

When the laws of apartheid were repealed in South Africa and all citizens were allowed to exercise their newfound right to vote, the lines at the polls were unbelievably long. People, particularly the black citizens, waited hours to cast their ballots for the first democratic government. I think all voting should take on the same importance – around the world, but especially in the United States.

There is an air of apathy amongst many voters as shown by the small percentage of ballots cast versus the number of people that are registered or eligible. Apparently many sense they are too far down the food chain to feel the effects of federal or local government

decisions. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

One does not have to be a cable news junkie or a prolific reader of newspapers to understand that congressional and/or city council decisions impact our daily existence. From tax rates to interest rates, from laws on healthcare to retirement programs – you will be affected. Some say their one vote doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but look at John Kennedy over Richard Nixon in 1960. The difference in popular votes was 0.1%, about 100,000 of the 68 million ballots cast. It is easy to extrapolate that just one vote per precinct made a tremendous difference.

The next election is atypical and demands your full attention. There seem to be movements

afoot trying to disrupt the ability of all interested voters from casting their ballots – to discourage some from taking the time to go to the polls - trying to develop apathy.
