EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION TEST

TST CLINICS

Due to a national shortage, routine tuberculin skin testing (TST) remains suspended. Watch this space in upcoming newsletters to find out when clinics here at the college will resume. In the meantime, if you encounter an exposure to tuberculosis, contact Teammate Health at 704.631.0206 to determine how and when to be tested.

CCHS SALUTES ALL VETERANS (NOVEMBER 11)

FACULTY/STAFF UPDATES Kathie Park has joined the college as the new academic affairs staff assistant after working as a temp in both the academic affairs and student services offices. She comes to us with 12+ years of successful administrative office and operations management experi-ence. In addition, she is currently working toward an associate degree at York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC.

DECEMBER NURSING GRADUATES

The College will conduct a test of the Emergency Response Communication System on November 7 at 3:30 p.m. A blast voicemail message will be sent to the primary and secondary phone of all students, faculty and staff. This test is conducted twice each academic year to ensure that the emergency response system is functioning properly. Once tested, this system is only activated in accordance with the college’s Emergency Response Plan and at the discretion of the campus’ Emergency Response Team. For more information regarding the emergency response com-munication system and other safety information, contact Hampton Hopkins in student services.

Carolinas College can use text messaging for emergency communication with students. To initiate this service follow these 5 easy steps: 1) Log on to Sonis-Web with your existing e-mail & PIN; 2) Click on “Update Bio” link at top of page; 3) Enter your cell phone number & provider; 4) Check the “Text Me” Flag; 5) Click “Submit” at bottom. While there, check to make sure all of your other contact information is correct. We will test the Sonis text messaging system on November 7, so please enter the information above by November 1 to participate. (The College is not responsible for any charges related to text messages.)

The capping/pinning ceremony will be Thursday, December 12, 5:30 p.m. in the Suzanne Freeman Auditorium. Think of the nurse who’s most inspired you, and invite him or her to share in this special ceremony and to present your cap (ladies) or pin (gentlemen). Order your cap or pin from www.Kayscaps.com (cap #1203).

NOTE ABOUT THE PIN: This is an inexpensive RN pin for the ceremo-ny. It is not the college pin, which is available when you order your cap and gown and is presented at graduation. Plan to wear your CCHS uniform or any white nurses’ uniform.

The school pin is an honored tradition in health care. It’s available for all programs and is one of the few pieces of jewelry all hospital dress codes allow. To encourage you to continue this tradition, the CCHS Alumni Association will pay the first $10 toward your CCHS pin! With prices starting as low as $30, this puts a CCHS pin in everyone’s grasp! Information for ordering your pin can be found at www.herffjones.com/college/carolinascollege.

AND SPEAKING OF PINS….

Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. The date commemorates the signing of the Armistice which end-ed WWI (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918). Though not a CCHS holiday, it is an official US holiday honoring armed services veterans – not to be confused with Memorial Day, which honors men and women who died while serving. . In your hon-or, CHS is hosting Veteran’s Day breakfast. If you’re a veteran and haven’t been invited email Ellen Sheppard at [email protected].

To all the military men and women that have left the security of their families to protect the security of American families; we thank you. To those who have served & sacrificed for our freedoms; God Speed. We support you and we remember you. Do not doubt for a moment the value of your service and your sacrifice.

Graduate nursing students receive their caps, December 2012.

CHS/CCHS SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER Ever wonder what it would be like to have no gifts under the tree? To watch your child’s eyes when he realizes Santa didn’t come? Or to have nothing to give your parents or spouse? For most of us, that would be unthink-able. But for some, it’s reality. The annual CHS Holiday Cheer Project gives you a chance to make a differ-ence. Angels, Silver Bells and stockings are waiting for you to adopt! Adopt an Angel - Grant a child’s wish by adopting one or more “Angels” and shopping from their Christ-

mas list. Silver Bells - Adopt a needy senior adult by shopping for items on their Christmas wish list. Fill a Stocking - Fill red stockings with age appropriate toys to be distributed to children registered with

the Christmas Center. Sponsor a Child - Don’t have time to shop? Sponsor a needy child by making a donation of $75 and the Salvation Army will shop for them. Smaller contributions gladly accepted; CCHS Community Involvement will shop for you.

Want to help but short on funds? Consider organizing a group to adopt, and pool your resources. Donors are given a tag with the recipi-ent’s name and age, a list of items they’d like, and a bag to put gifts in. Once you’ve gotten all the items you wish to donate, put them in the bag, tag, and place it under the Christmas tree which will be in the main lobby. Our community involvement committee will take care of getting them to the recipients. Stocking fillers are given a red net stocking with a child’s gender and age. Fill it with age-appropriate items, tag, and place it under the Christmas tree in the lobby. Watch for flyers containing further details.

Part of a culture of excellence is recognizing others. The following CCHS students and teammates were recognized recently:

With all of the recent news coverage, there may be some confusion surrounding the availability of student insurance following the Health Insurance Marketplace that opened on October 1, 2013. Helpful guidance is provided below to offer you basic information about the college’s existing student health insurance plan and the options available via the marketplace.

Carolinas College makes available to all students a basic health insurance plan. This plan is not a comprehensive major medical plan and is not intended to replace such coverage. However, the basic plan is compliant with the pro-visions of the Affordable Care Act. This injury and illness policy is open to all students who are enrolled in six semes-ter credit hours or more and is made available through a partnership with Collegiate Risk Management. You can find out more about this coverage by visiting their website at http://www.collegiaterisk.com/schools/carolinascollege.aspx.

The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress in 2010 with a primary provision of providing improved access to health care. General information is available at the Health Care Reform Made Simple Microsite at http://chs.hcrmadesimple.com (password: chs). All of the plans available via the marketplace offer 10 essential health benefits including:

Students living in both North and South Carolina who are in need of health coverage may get insurance by visiting the Health Insurance Marketplace at https://www.healthcare.gov. In addition, for those who are under the age of 26 and whose parents have an insurance plan that covers children, you can be added to your parent’s policy. It’s important to know that Coventry Health Care of the Carolinas-Carolinas HealthCare System is the most affordable product that will ensure access to all services provided by Carolinas HealthCare Sys-tem providers and facilities.

No one plans to get sick or hurt, but almost everyone needs medical care at some point. Health insurance covers these costs and pro-tects you from very high expenses. If you do not have existing coverage it is important to consider one of these options available to you.

CELEBRATE OUR SHARED HUMANITY

Success Tip of the Month - Are you distracted during tests? Try these strategies: Don’t expose yourself to negative energy! To begin your

test in a focused frame of mind, separate yourself from fellow testers before the test.

If sounds in the room are a problem, wear ear plugs. Sit in the front row near the wall, if possible, to limit the

possibility of movement in front of you. Keep your eyes on your test paper or close them to

breathe and regroup. Check your watch for the time rather than looking at the wall clock.

While it is natural to feel somewhat anxious at testing time, if test anxiety is a significant problem for you, contact Nan-cy Watkins or make an appointment with EAP (704-355-5021). For more success tips, check out the Student Sup-port page on the Information Portal. (Click on Student Ser-vices along the top of the home page and then on Student Support.) Attention NUR101 Students Wondering what the intermediate courses are going to be like? How can you prepare to be successful in the next chal-lenging phase of your nursing education? Get the “straight scoop” from a panel of experienced intermediate students on Thursday, November 21, 1:00-2:00 pm in Room 190.

SNA and the Student Success Center are sponsoring this information session to help you prepare for success in inter-mediate nursing. No need to register. Starting NUR 202 in the Spring? A similar information ses-sion for rising 202 students is scheduled for Monday, De-cember 2, 11:00-12:00 in Room 161. The panel will consist of current NUR 202 students; this is not to be missed! Student Employment Opportunities - If you’re interested in part-time/PRN employment with CMC, talk to Jacquelynn Williams, our Human Resources Recruitment Specialist will be on campus November 4 from 10:00 a.m. - 12 noon. Or she is available to you at 704.631.0314 or [email protected].

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER

The Center is a great place to study! (Open 24/7 for your convenience!)

CCHS has accepted President Obama’s challenge to colleges: Develop interfaith initiatives and dialog that expands trust and respect among diverse cultures and faiths. November 26 will be our inaugural event. We’ll meet at the college at 6 p.m. for coffee and conversation, then proceed down the street to Covenant Presbyterian for Charlotte’s 2013 Interfaith Thanksgiving service.

The annual citywide Thanksgiving Service is a 38-year long tradition in Charlotte. This year it’s on Tuesday, November 26. All faith communities are represented in song, sacred readings, art, and inspirational message. Baha’i and Methodist, Muslim and Jew, Baptist and Unitarian (and more!) come together with mutual respect on this one magical evening as we are united by our shared humanity and thankfulness to the creator. The venue changes each year; this year the 7 p.m. ser-vice is at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead St. Refreshments follow what is sure to be one of the most uplifting experiences of your holiday season. Come early – this is Char-lotte’s most popular interfaith activity. For more information about the service: David Zoernig ([email protected] or 704.519.8788) or Anne Hunter Eidson ([email protected] or 704.622.9975). For more infor-mation about the CCHS challenge, contact Hampton Hopkins (704.355.5585), Kim Bradshaw (704.355.5584) or Ellen Sheppard (704.355.5316).

COMPLIANCE CORNER - PATIENT DISCHARGE ROUNDING

CMC has initiated Anticipated Date of Discharge (ADOD) rounding. Nurses, social workers, physicians, physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners from practice groups round on a daily basis with the goal of reviewing patient caseloads on the unit and estimating the date of anticipated discharge based on the projection of continued progress. The hope is that care will be coordinated with educational prep-aration for discharge so that patients are prepared for discharge to home. The forethought allows the healthcare team to anticipate functional needs like progressive ambulation, nutritional intake and pain management with the time needed to engage with patients and/or their families in any necessary teaching initiatives required to care for the patient at home. It is hoped that coordination of care in this way prepares the patient for a more well planned and successful discharge, and helps the hospital with bed management as well.

Each year as a gift to graduating students, the College has a large composite photo made of their class. Each graduate receives an 11 X 14 souvenir copy, as well as two small individual pictures, ideal for using with your certification exam ap-plication. A large framed composite hangs in the lobby for the next 12 months, and a smaller framed version hangs in the portrait hall forever. DON’T be left out! Pictures are taken in late January. Times will be announced in the December and January newsletter; a signup sheet will be posted. All students who will graduate in 2014 should have their pictures taken as the photography company only comes on campus once a year. Gentlemen: please wear white shirt and tie on your pic-

Should inclement weather necessitate the delay or closing of the college, that status will be posted on local television and radio stations as well as the College’s inclement weather number (704.446.7854) and web site, www.CarolinasCollege.edu. If a delayed opening is announced, count the delay from 8:00 a.m. So if there’s a 2-hour delay, the college will open at 10 am with classes normally scheduled for 10. Pop Quiz: Your class regularly meets 9 - 11 AM on a day the college is on a 2 hour delay. What do you do? Answer: If you can do so safely, come at 10. Your class will meet for one hour.

IT’S SNOWING!! WHAT DO I DO NOW?

RUN FOR HOPE

On October 19th, a group of students, faculty, and their families participated in the annual Hopebuilders 5K Run, an annual fundraiser for Levine Children’s Hospital. Afterwards they met up at Atherton Mills on South Blvd. to feast on brunch from the local food trucks. Nursing instructor Diahanne Holandez’s son Brandon (she’s pointing at him on the left) placed 3rd in his age group! Spearheaded by our own Karen Miller, nursing instructor, it was a great day for all.
