November 2014

In September, Carroll EMC had the opportunity to film a commercial for Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) in conjunction with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Participating Georgia EMCs, including Carroll EMC, have been sponsors of GHSA for almost 16 years.

Several Carroll EMC linemen were featured giving a high-voltage safety demonstration and presenting a local fire department with an automatic

external defibrillator (AED). Sandy Entrekin, Member Advocate for Carroll EMC, was also featured deliver-ing a Smart Board to a classroom at Central Elementary School.

The commercial is one of four new ad-vertisements that will air on GPB-TV during Friday night football games, as well as other broadcasts, this season. The commer-cials, filmed at select EMCs, represent all 24 of the participat-ing electric coopera-tives throughout the state and focus on how each serves its community. Be on the lookout for Carroll EMC showing Concern for Community, one of the seven cooperative principles.

Carroll EMC recently honored Central High School with the 2014 Georgia High School As-sociation’s Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award. This recognition, sponsored by 23 of Georgia’s electric cooperatives and the Geor-gia High School Association, is given to schools that exhibit exemplary sportsmanship during competitive events, both by student athletes and spectators. These qualities make this award a tribute to the entire school commu-nity. One school in each division, within each region, is chosen to receive this annual award.

Thanks to Sandy Entrekin from Carroll EMC, who presented the award on behalf of the Co-op during the September 5 football game in Carrollton.

Carroll EMC employees lived out the cooperative principle Concern for Community, by participating in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) ice bucket challenge this summer. This viral phenomenon involved an individual or organization be-ing called out to take the challenge—dumping a bucket of ice water on their head, videotaping the event and calling out three more people to take the challenge, or as an alternative, donate money to ALS research.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects nerve cells in a person’s spinal cord and brain. This disease causes progres-

sive degeneration of motor neurons, leaving many patients paralyzed in the later stages. Through the ice bucket chal-lenge, organizations have raised millions of dollars for ALS research.

Carroll EMC’s administrative employees took the challenge August 26 and nominated Carroll EMC’s operations employ-ees, Coweta-Fayette EMC and Jackson EMC to take the chal-lenge. Two days later, Carroll EMC’s operations employees accepted the challenge and nominated Rappahannock EMC in Virginia, GreyStone Power and Coweta-Fayette EMC.

Remember to renew your GATE card prior to January 1, 2015. The Georgia Agriculture Tax Exemption (GATE) program is an agricultural sales and use tax exemption certificate issued by the Department of Agriculture that identi-fies its user as a qualified farmer or agricul-tural producer. The GATE program was created by Georgia House Bill 386, which offers quali-fied agriculture producers a sales tax exemp-tion on agricultural equipment and production inputs. The program replaced the Agricultural Certification of Exemption (ST-A1) form, effec-tive January 1, 2013. You can renew online at https://forms.agr.georgia.gov/GATE/GateRe-new.aspx.

Don’t forget to return a copy of both the GATE card and the GATE addendum to Carroll EMC. The addendum is also available on the website mentioned above and lists all accounts to be exempted.
