Rabbi’s Message

We are excited and moved to share with you that the very first Shabbat of this month we will welcome beloved guests from Charleston, South Carolina, into our synagogue, into our hearts and into our homes. When we visited Mother Emanuel, A.M.E. Zion Church this past July, we had no formal invitation and hardly knew what to expect. Yet, in spite of the mass shooting which had occurred only two weeks before and despite an overwhelming influx of

visitors from all over the country, we were met with open arms and grateful hearts.Althea, Reverend Clementa Pinckney’s assistant of many years, greeted us in the

church office with warmth and trust, and she invited us to take a few quiet moments in the main sanctuary. Formed in 1791, Charleston’s Mother Emanuel is the oldest A.M.E. Church in the South and began as a congregation of free blacks and slaves. As we sat alone in this time-worn sanctuary with its sloping balcony, a room that can seat hun-dreds, we imagined the prayers, hopes, sorrows and dreams of those who have prayed there. We thought of the church members who had just occupied these pews as the last of the “Charleston 9” was eulogized and laid to rest.

Later that day we joined the community for the 6 p.m. Wednesday evening bible study, the very same class at which the shooting occurred only two weeks before. As was described in Meir’s Yom Kippur sermon, the experience of hearing these beautiful souls speak about forgiveness and healing left us forever changed. We have so much to learn from them—lessons of humility and strength, lessons of transformation and faith.

We learned the story of Myra Thompson, formerly a public school teacher who was studying to be a min-ister and was teaching bible on the very night that she was killed. Myra came from a large and deeply connected extended family. When we took this photo with a few of her sisters, we never imagined that we would have the privi-lege of inviting Myra’s family to Temple Beth-El. But we have and we will. Through letters, email correspondence and phone calls, a friendship has evolved with Blondelle Gadsden, one of Myra’s eldest sisters (second from the left in the photo.)

In early October, Blondelle made clear her hope to bring her sisters to Great Neck. Please join us on Friday night, November 6, at 7:00 pm, as we worship with them

and hear their stories and journeys. Plans are evolving for gatherings on Saturday. We will inform you of these plans and details as they are finalized. Check your email or call the main office for more information as this special Shabbat approaches.

The Emanuel A.M.E. Zion Church was founded on the premise that, even through great trials and challenges—Emanuel-El. This Hebrew translates as, “God is with us.” No doubt, this special visit will enable us to encounter the presence of holiness, the presence of God, in new and unexpected ways.

4 TEMPLE BETH-EL OF GREAT NECK

ToBe “With”

by Rabbi Rachel Van Thyn and Terri Levin

Rabbi Rachel Van Thyn:“When my grandmother passed away in 2012, I remember the ways that my community immediately rallied around my family. It wasn’t just that people sent food—it was the myriad ways people stepped in to help us through our grief. People led shiva minyans; they came to our house to set up and put away food; they sat with us; they called us in the days, weeks and months after the funeral. People I had never met before held us close to them, hugged us and held our hands in both big and small ways. In that community, every person counted. The best way I know how to repay people for their kindness is to extend the same efforts when they are in need.

Terri Levin:“In 2001, we got the phone call that every parent fears. It was from the hospital near our daughter’s college: she had been in an accident; she was severely injured and was in very critical condition. We flew out on the next plane and left behind 2 young children with my parents who were 78 and 83 at the time. My daughter remained in the hospital for three months and we did not ever leave her side.

It is with extreme gratitude to G-d and to the many people (friends and strangers) that we all made it through that year. People donated blood, said prayers, made meals, offered their homes, drove my children to school, and quite a few people flew out to St Louis to be with us.

I cannot repay the debt of gratitude I feel towards those friends and strangers who were “with us” at that time, doing whatever needed to be done or helping whatever way they could. I can only try to extend the support to the next person who comes along and is drowning in fear or grief of their own.”

As part of the next phase of Project ToBE, we are thinking about ways in which we, as a community, can best respond in times of need. We are indebted to those people who have created and managed the Caring Community, the Gesher group and our Shiva minyan for many years; our plan is to be a unifying force behind these efforts and bring renewed energy to expand and enrich our ability to “BE WITH” people in times of crisis.

Our vision is grand, but we are starting with one manageable step: re-evaluating and re-imagining the ways our community responds after a death. There is no time in a per-son’s life where they are as open to support and friendship as when they have experienced a loss. Our goal is to offer an immediate response, tailored to fit the needs of the partic-ular family. Each situation is different: It may be that some people need assistance to set up food for a shiva, someone to watch the house during the funeral, or transportation to services. Some may simply need a coffee pot or some chairs for shiva. Some families may just feel supported knowing that we are there with them. We also strongly feel that our support should extend beyond the shiva period. Our goal is to stay in touch with families who have experienced a loss on an ongoing basis, to see who needs further assistance, support or resources. We have recently started a bereavement group with the intent of trying to connect and support those who have experienced a recent loss.

Once our bereavement support is well established, the plan is to expand to offer sup-port to people in any kind of crisis. There are so many other stressful times in our lives when we need someone to be “with us,” and our goal is to create the infrastructure to be able to respond seamlessly to anyone who finds themselves “in need.”

And, we need YOU! If you are interested in joining our volunteer efforts please con-tact Rabbi Van Thyn ([email protected]) and/or Terri Levin ([email protected]). There are many ways that you can be of service, just let us know that you are willing.

Lastly, if you would like to make a donation to this initiative, please earmark funds to the Rabbis’ Discretionary Fund and write “Times Of Need Initiative” in the memo line. Every bit counts!

The Syrian Refugee Crisis and the Social Action Committee

During the High Holidays, Rabbis Feldman spoke about the Syrian ref-ugee crisis, and that the Social Action Committee would be responding to it.

TBE has had the extraordinary op-portunity of working with Vietnamese and Russian families through HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), and we are investigating the possibility of doing the same with a Syrian refugee family. In our past experience, TBE members contributed their efforts and money to make the families’ integration into our community successful.

Should we be able to move ahead with welcoming a Syrian family to Great Neck, we will reach out to our membership for assistance and support.

Stay tuned.

Care Cards

The Care Cards Committee is under the auspices of the Caring Community of the temple. Handwritten cards are sent to member families when there are hap-py occasions such as an engagement, wedding or birth. Congratulations are extended on behalf of the Caring Community. So, too, are personal cards sent if there is an illness or death.

These cards are a wonderful way to communicate thoughtfully with the congregation. When someone receives a card they know there are people who care about what is happening in their lives. The temple is an extension of our family and we want you to know that we share both your joys and sorrows as a community of caring people.

Project ToBE: Round 2 Conversations

Our team is delighted to tell you about our next round of conversations. They are being planned to continue the ToBE mission of creating meaningful relationships among our congregants, as well as to spark the creative insights and ideas you have about the topics offered during this holiday season in prayer, sermons and congregant speeches.

Below is a sampling of some of the topics that will be discussed at various conversations: ▪ On Shabbat evening Jews are invited into the mystery and warmth of candles, wine

and challah. ▪ What is the meaning or symbolism of these rituals? ▪ What important rituals do we have or would we like in our homes?

▪ “The whole world is a narrow bridge. The key thing is to not be afraid.” ▪ What does this quote mean?

▪ Share a specific story in which either you or someone close to you faced a frightening situation with courage. Did any transformation come from that?

▪ “Hand it over to God.” ▪ What does that mean? (anger/rage/pain) ▪ Share a specific story in which either you or someone close to you was able to

“hand it over to God.” ▪ Every morning we recite a blessing commanding us to learn. We are called to be “a

kingdom of priests” and that is often understood to mean a people of daily learners. ▪ What topic would we love to master, or strive to go deeply into?

In the next few weeks you will receive an email with the ToBE Conversation Dates that are available in November and early December. To assist our planning, please reply quickly since there will only be a limited number of openings this fall. Depending upon your responses, we will consider doing another round in the spring.

Any questions, please contact Randi Weiler or Sheila Aronson. Thanks so much.

6 TEMPLE BETH-EL OF GREAT NECK

Why a “Think/ Pair/ Share” Model is Essential to Jewish Education

I just got off of the phone with a parent, a conversation that has become more routine as of late, where she argued that her child needs a Hebrew tutor for her child, not Religious School. This parent, and countless others, believe this is the best form of Jewish Education; it’s personal, its one-on-one, learning happens at their own pace and it’s incredibly convenient given the frenetic sched-ules of our children. My colleagues and I have been wrestling with these requests and the reality that more and more parents are choosing this kind of Jewish learning for their child. For us it has become clear that this is the exact opposite of what we believe Jewish education should be and more importantly, this modality does not meet the needs of our learners.

While for some of our students, tutoring might be the necessary choice for their education, this approach does a disservice to com-munal Jewish learning. Pirkei Avot text states “ Rabbi Nehorai taught: Uproot yourself to live in a community where Torah is studied; do not delude yourself that the Torah will come to you. Only with colleagues can your studies be fortified. Do not rely on your own understanding. (Avot 4:18) .” This text is the blueprint, for Jewish education, an educational model echoed in what is called “think/pair/share”. The “think/pair/share” model allows us to reflect, to work in chevrutah, (or small grouping), and then to share back our thoughts and findings with the greater classroom community and beyond. In this way, students learn from one another and even more impor-tantly they take on the teaching role in their small groups – ensuring everyone understands the learning. The gains for our students are exponential: learning and modeling social skills, developing personal values and beliefs, questioning and struggling together, navigating conversation and debate, working through questions of identity, cul-ture and our family roots; discovering who they are and where they come from. And most significantly for our community, all of this is viewed through a Jewish lens, this is the benefit of the full Religious School experience, and as such reflects the vital need for Jewish edu-cation lived in community, not through a tutor. In a collaborative and engaging classroom we can teach our children the values we cherish and we can support meaningful friendships while they study our most cherished texts together! While a certain “efficiency” is achieved with a tutor; lessons are learned, Hebrew letters are decoded- when we have only one learner and one tutor, we rob our children of the

noteworthy benefits of a community of Jewish learners. We must ask: what are we teaching our children when we say that the solution to the challenges of a Jewish education is just a tutor?

Here at Temple Beth-El, we work tirelessly to improve our programming and our HebrewTime framework, so as not to repeat the less successful and bitter Religious School experiences of the past. At Temple Beth-El, we do include Hebrew one-on-one learning, as we know it is one important component and does offer beneficial learning for students. Our approach, though, goes well beyond a tutoring model, and is purposefully three-fold. Yes, our Hebrew instruction offers a level of personalized attention. But we also meet together as a classroom community with students and teachers. And most importantly, our families come together for learning as well. The “think/pair/share” model weaves beautifully through our programming, creating and maintaining a culture of reflecting, of teaming in small groups, of listening to our peers, of teaching and advocating for our own beliefs and to then form our own hypotheses about Judaism, God, values and tradition.

The Temple Beth-El community of learners invites those of all ages to share stories or narratives, to bring knowledge and opin-ions about Torah and Jewish tenets, and to learn from and with one another. This is not always a simple or effortless process. But Judaism teaches that we are not a people that should be taking the easy way out – and this may include the “easiness” inherent in hir-ing a tutor so that our children can have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. We see it instead, as a journey- sometimes rocky, sometimes long, but almost always full of richness, purpose and meaning. Judaism has always been a counter culture, the one that swims up stream, the culture that would have us fight the rising tide of the tutoring cul-ture to preserve a model of learning that is incredibly gratifying!

And so, I invite you to reflect and consider how you and your children might cultivate these kinds of relationships – with the text, with their teacher, within in their peer group. Can we do this with a tutor? What do we see the future of Jewish education? How else might we achieve our goals? Join me – as we think/pair/share.

Brotherhood News

On behalf of the Brotherhood, I hope that everyone had a wonderful High Holidays season, and best wishes to all for a happy and healthy New Year.

I would especially like to thank Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Tara, and Rabbi Rachel for their passionate plea to the congregation on Kol Nidre and throughout the Holidays for greater temple participation in the Brotherhood’s efforts to continuously maintain the food pantry at St. Aloysius. On the Thursday after Yom Kippur, Brotherhood members Stu Lubert, Martin Einhorn, Matthew Moshen, and Norman Wheeler, with the generous help of the temple maintenance staff, brought three truckloads of food for the pantry, and col-lected an amazing sum of money that will go toward buying food for the pantry.

I am happy to report that that Brotherhood members Stu Lubert and Steven Koteen, using funds generously do-nated by temple congregant Rachel Stone, assisted nearly twenty local Great Neck children and their families to buy equip-ment and uniforms in order to participate in the Great Neck Soccer League. In the near future, Brotherhood, particularly with the assistance of member and Park District Trustee Frank Cilluffo, will work to expand its efforts to help those in need throughout the Great Neck community.

On Sunday evening, September 27, the Brotherhood provided desserts for the congregation after erev Sukkot services. The following Tuesday, the Brotherhood held its annual dinner in the Sukkah, although the weather failed to cooperate. Regardless, we had a lovely dinner, as always full of good cheer and camaraderie.

As part of Brotherhood’s continuing Sunday morning “bagel breakfast/lecture” series, temple congregant Professor Ken Pearl spoke on the subject, “From Shul to Sea: A Maritime History of the Jewish People.” Thanks to Dr. Pearl for volunteer-ing his time, and to Steve Walk for hosting the event.

On November 15, our second Bagel/Lecture will feature a return visit by Nolan Altman, Vice President of JewishGen, a leading genealogical Web site and re-search center, as well as a past president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Long Island. Mr. Altman will discuss methods to search Jewish genealogies online. The

lecture is titled, “JewishGen’s JOWBR Project–The Genealogical Value of Jewish Burial Cemetery Records” As always, the cost of the bagel breakfast is $12. The lec-ture is free for temple members, and $10 for non-temple members.

The Brotherhood is extremely excited to host Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union of Reform Judaism on Sunday, December 6. This is an exceptionally fortunate opportunity for our congregation and neighboring Reform congregations to come and hear Rabbi Jacobs discuss the value of the URJ and the status of Reform Judaism today. Our clergy and lay lead-ership will host the event and welcome leadership from neighboring congrega-tions. Please mark this on your calendars, invite your friends, and RSVP to [email protected] or to the Temple office. Thanks to Martin Einhorn and Bill Peirez for securing this wonderful event for the Temple.

Our next Brotherhood meeting will take place on Thursday evening, November 19 at 7:00pm. Dinner will be provided. All Brotherhood members and temple men interested in Brotherhood are welcome.

I would like to add that we are eter-nally grateful to Bill Peirez, Frank Stark, and all the work provided by the temple maintenance staff to support our events. Frank and his staff are the backbone of our temple community, and we owe them a great deal for their help.

We have an exciting schedule this Fall, and we look forward to seeing you at our events!

“Judaism begins in the home... It begins in homes where Jewish words re-echo, where a Jewish book is honored, where a Jewish song is heard. It begins in homes where the Jewish etching or painting and Jewish ceremonial objects are visible and exercise a silent influence upon those who behold them.”`

Club Chai News

On Thursday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m., Club Chai will meet and show a very special movie: The Other Son. This film, described by Bloomberg News as “remarkable,” is the story of Jewish and Palestinian boys, switched at birth, the error only discovered when the boy raised as Jewish registers for the army. This revelation turns their lives and that of their parents, their values and beliefs, upside down.

As always, Temple Beth-El members and friends are welcome. Coffee will be served.

Temple Beth-El was proud to celebrate a first-in-three-generations event in September when Eric Dubilirer became a bar mitzvah. Both sides of Eric’s family emigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine, making Eric the first in his family to be born in the U.S. Eric’s parents and their families could not practice Judaism openly in Ukraine. Pictured with Eric, at the Oneg Shabbat preceding his becoming a bar mitzvah, are his parents, Irina Gelman and Max Dubilirer, his brother Zachary, grandparents, an aunt, uncle and two cousins. Photo by Barbara Herman.

Go Online to Stay Up-to-Date

The temple Bulletin is only one of many ways to keep informed of what’s happening at Temple Beth-El.

Twice each week, we send an e-mail message with a calendar of events for the coming days. If you haven’t already given your e-mail address to the temple office, that’s a good reason to do so.

Our website, www.tbegreatneck.org, is full of detailed informa-tion about all aspects of TBE. Because of early Bulletin deadlines and because plans change, we can’t promise that the Bulletin will always contain the latest information. However, the website calen-dar is always up-to-date.

Our Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/TBEGreatNeck, contains reminders, news flashes, photos and information that sometimes can’t be found anywhere else. You don’t have to be a Facebook user to view our Facebook page; just view it as you would do with any other website. If you are a Facebook user, we suggest that you “like” our page. By doing that, you’ll be sure to receive our posts whenever you log onto Facebook.

Flower Delivery Volunteers Needed

A few hours of your time, three or four Saturdays a year, will give you membership in the Floral Delivery Mitzvah Corps—a dedicated group of women who brighten the day of convalescent or bereaved congregants by delivering pulpit flowers to them. You will be surprised at how

good it makes YOU feel! For information, please call Harriet Feldmann at 718-225-2133. This project is sponsored by Sisterhood. Thank you.

Please call or e-mail Amanda Greenawalt,

(516) 487-0900 ext 108,[email protected].
