COBDEN DISTRICT PUBLIC SCHOOL
NOVEMBER 2015
Dear Parents, Staff & Students,
It’s hard to believe that the first two months of school are almost behind us. With the unsea-
sonably warm weather, this has been a great opportunity for our staff and students to participate in
outdoor activities. Our Flag Football team shone at the recent tournament and we were finally able
to bring the Horton Cup to Cobden School!
I would also like to commend the work of our cross country team who made us all proud with their
sportsmanship and accomplishments, not only at our School sponsored Logo’s Land event, but also
at the county tournament held at Hugli’s Blueberry Ranch. Their teamwork and character make us
proud to be cougars.

nuts. Please refrain from sending in nut
products (or those that may contain traces
of nuts) if there are children with allergies in
your child’s classroom.
Please don’t park or drop off students in
front of the school from 9:00– 9:30 as the
buses unload our students at this time.
Obey the red flashing lights of our

STOPPING THE SPREAD STARTS WITH
YOU!
Stay home if you are sick and until you are
feeling better. Wash your hands – it takes just 15 seconds to
do the single most effective thing to prevent the
spread of germs Cover your cough! When you cough or
sneeze use a tissue or the inside of your sleeve to
keep from spreading germs to those around you.
Let’s all do our part to stop the spread!
Some of our younger
students in Kindergarten
recently showed an inter-
est in the garden they
planted last spring. Cam-
eron McGregor from McGregor Produce
visited our classes and spoke about
growing strawberries and other vegeta-
bles . He showed our students how to
protect them in the winter by covering
them with straw. The children then had a
chance to taste some of the delicious
harvest!

Keys to Reading Success
Visualizing or Creating Mental or Sensory Images
As we read a poem, a novel, or pause over a newspaper story, a picture forms in our minds. Certain smells, tastes, sights and feelings emerge
depending on what we are reading and the life experiences we bring to a text. This is called visualization or creating mental or sensory images.
These pictures, smells, tastes, and feelings help the story make sense. In other words, we create a movie in our minds. When your child knows
there should be a movie running in their mind, they are able figure out when they are having difficulty understanding the text. For example, when
the movie gets fuzzy or stops they can reread, look up certain words or ask for help. Then the movie can start playing again.
Tips for Parents: Is Your Child Creating Sensory Images? There are a number of ways to see if your child is creating sensory images:
*Is your child begging you to keep reading once you start and are the able to give you details?
*Is your child laughing or crying at certain parts?
*Are they able to make predictions about the story and can they describe the characters?
Signs your child might not be creating sensory images.
*Lack of interest in being read to or reading.
*Inability to put the story into their own words.
*Lack of interest about whether the story is finished or not.
*Inability to describe the characters or setting.
HOW CAN I HELP AT HOME?
*Tell your child to close their eyes as you read . Read a few lines, stop, and describe in as much detail as possible what you saw in your mind.
*Tell them every sound you heard, every smell you smelled, and every scene you saw.
*Model what is going on in your mind.
*Encourage you child to keep a notebook at their bed and have them draw pictures of what they see when you read to them.

our students to follow a
family recipe and create
some delicious scones that
were later shared with the
class.
