A wet winter and spring has delayed some activities but there is now more certainty about the timing of the next stages as we work towards project completion. The new timetable for completing works at the Te Kauwhata and Rangiriri interchanges is outlined below. Please note that over the Christmas holiday period, the Expressway at Rangiriri will remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction with a speed limit of 70km/h. The project team is targeting mid-March to have the Expressway open with four lanes of traffic at 100km/h. 22 November 28 November Murphy St Te Wharepu bridge Churchill East Rd Glen Murray Rd Rangiriri Rd RANGIRIRI HOTEL Te Wharepu Rd Old SH1 (closed) TO AUCKLAND TO HAMILTON Te Wharepu Road Te Wharepu Road Completion of Rangiriri south-bound on-ramp On 28 November the section of on-ramp between Murphy Street and Rangiriri Road will be open. 4 | Waikato Expressway Rangiriri section | Project update | November 2016

Longswamp section under way Work has started on the Longswamp section after Transport Minister Simon Bridges turned the first sod at a ceremony on 14 October. The Longswamp section will see the expressway between Rangiriri and Hampton Downs upgraded to two lanes in each direction, with improved local road connections.

In order to minimise disruption to travellers on SH1 while work is completed at the Rangiriri section, Longswamp contractor Downer NZ will conduct most of the initial work at the northern end of the section near Hampton Downs.

Turning the first sod on the Longswamp section are Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson, Waikato-Tainui representative Tom Roa, Transport Minister Simon Bridges and Waikato MP Lindsay Tisch.

Expressway overview mapThe Waikato Expressway is one of the Government’s seven Roads of National Significance. The Expressway will improve safety and reliability and reduce travel times and congestion on State Highway 1 by delivering a four-lane highway from the Bombay Hills to south of Cambridge. It is being built in seven sections.
