New timetable for completionThe project team would like to update road users and stakeholders on progress on the Rangiriri section. A wet winter and spring has delayed some activities but there is now more certainty about the timing of the next stages as we work towards project completion. The new timetable for completing works at the Te Kauwhata and Rangiriri interchanges is outlined below. Please note that over the Christmas holiday period, the Expressway at Rangiriri will remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction with a speed limit of 70km/h. The project team is targeting mid-March to have the Expressway open with four lanes of traffic at 100km/h.

Completion of Rangiriri south-bound on-rampOn 28 November the section of on-ramp between Murphy Street and Rangiriri Road will be open. Access to the on-ramp is via Te Wharepu or Glen Murray Roads, or from Murphy Street and Rangiriri Road within Rangiriri township.
Wharepu Road one-way From 9 January Te Wharepu Road will be one-way heading north for approximately seven weeks. Only north-bound traffic from Rangiriri will be able to use this link road. South-bound traffic from Te Kauwhata, wanting to get to Rangiriri, will need to use the Expressway and exit at Rangiriri.
The reason for this one-way is so the contractor can work on the new alignment of the intersection at Te Kauwhata and carry out work to turn this road into a local road which will be managed by Waikato District Council in the future.

08December
The south-bound off-ramp at Te Kauwhata will open to traffic on 8 December.
Then on 28 November the Te Kauwhata north-bound on-ramp will close for approximately two months to allow completion of surfacing work on the main alignment at the northern end of the project.
28November
From 28 November northbound traffic from Te Kauwhata will detour via Rodda Road (which will remain two-way) to access the expressway while the on-ramp is closed.

4 | Waikato Expressway Rangiriri section | Project update | November 2016
Longswamp section under way Work has started on the Longswamp section after Transport Minister Simon Bridges turned the first sod at a ceremony on 14 October. The Longswamp section will see the expressway between Rangiriri and Hampton Downs upgraded to two lanes in each direction, with improved local road connections.
In order to minimise disruption to travellers on SH1 while work is completed at the Rangiriri section, Longswamp contractor Downer NZ will conduct most of the initial work at the northern end of the section near Hampton Downs.
Turning the first sod on the Longswamp section are Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson, Waikato-Tainui representative Tom Roa, Transport Minister Simon Bridges and Waikato MP Lindsay Tisch.
Expressway overview mapThe Waikato Expressway is one of the Government’s seven Roads of National Significance. The Expressway will improve safety and reliability and reduce travel times and congestion on State Highway 1 by delivering a four-lane highway from the Bombay Hills to south of Cambridge. It is being built in seven sections.
