Science Rules

By Aidyn Campbell

Here is something you can do! You can make some cool projects and learn more about science. Anyone can make a volcano, it’s so easy. All you need to do is get some soda and Mentos candy. You can put Mentos in the soda and it will burst out like a volcano. Science is really fun when you get to do hands-on projects. If you're saying this then you better try it because most projects are fun. Projects are fun to do with your family. It's one of my favorite things because all the projects I get to do are really cool. You can also use vinegar and baking soda for the volcano experiment. I will make it burst pretty good too. Science is cool because last year I did a volcano project The volcano looked great and the lava burst out. It was really cool. It was the funniest science project I've ever had. I really like science. It is my favorite thing to do besides gym. There is really cool projects and stuff that you can do at home and it is really easy. I know a friend that had a teacher in third grade named Mr. Brocious. Mr. Brocious really likes science and did cool science experiments with the class. In many of the classes, our teachers really like doing fun experiments with their students. You have fun learning and doing the experiments with your classmates. If you are reading this article and you look at the picture above, just know that working together, you can accomplish anything.

Odyssey of The Mind By Ben Bailor

Odyssey of the Mind or OM as we say, this year has been very fun and interesting. My team does the Vehicle Problem this year. My coaches are Mrs. Sebring and Mrs. Snure. My teammates are me, Sophia Hall-Belluscio, Christa Cirello, Eric Pol, Chloe Wade, Taylor Spears, and Abby Zimmerman. We are busy building vehicles, making the props and backdrops. It takes time and research to put together our problem. We are getting our skit ready for the Regionals Competition. It takes lots of hard work, time and teamwork. We are looking forward to competing at Regionals.

OM 2016 –Tech By Ryan O’Connor Our Odyssey of the Mind team was assigned a problem this year called “Odd-A-Bot”. We need to build a robot that be required to do assignments including a family (must have more than one generations). Our amazing coaches are Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Schlenkler. The fifth graders on the team are Kaylee Kurcon, Cole Miller, Scarlet Weir, and me (Ryan). The third graders are Ruby Bailor and Brielle Spears. We must dedicate a lot of time to go to prepare for the competitions and we hope to go to OM Worlds! I am looking forward to go to OM Regional’s and for a great year!

Santa and his Elves Facts

By Baylee Lock

As Christmas approaches, children around the world have Santa on the brain. They’re anxiously wondering if they’ve been overly naughty or sufficiently nice, and eagerly daydreaming about their possible gifts. Here are seven interesting facts about elves and Santa: Did you know that the elves live in the North Pole?

Page 6: November 2016 Smile-O Gram The Smile-O Gram · Papa Louie Two: when burgers attack: you have to destroy the burgers and ... to their house we play outside in the snow if it’s snowing,

The fact that Elves always have pointy ears and rosy cheeks. Santa has been delivering gifts to children for 200 years WOW!!!!! Did you also know that the elves favorite things to eat are cookies and candy, but

Mrs. Clause looks after the elves to make sure they also eat fruits and vegetables?

The elves make toys during the entire year not just during Christmas. Making toys keeps the elves busy throughout the year. The last fact is that all of the elves are under 4 feet tall.

Hope you enjoy reading some cool facts about SANTA!!!!

CHRISTMAS BREAK

BY GIANNA ZELLMER

Christmas is coming soon! That means winter break is coming. Here are some things people do for Christmas or winter break. People can have Christmas parties and enjoy celebrating with family and friends. At parties they can have a Secret Santa, and people can guess who they got their gift from. When family and friends are over, and the power goes out they can play games like "Guess The Animal, “Guess Who Left the Room”, and a spelling contest. What I do on Christmas break is I go to my cousin’s house Talia and Vincent. When I go to their house we play outside in the snow if it’s snowing, eat some very delicious food, and open some big gifts from our nanny, Rita. We all put on our snow pants, jacket, boots, gloves, face masks, and hat. When we go outside to play we have a snowball fight, and Talia and I are on a team. Vincent and my brother Ryan are on a team. My Aunt Karen makes a sweet potato dish with marshmallows on top. She makes the best sweet potato dish and also makes Italian Rainbow cookies. My Uncle Justin makes a nice big chicken. I love his chicken. It’s so good. My cousin Talia and I make homemade chocolate chip cookies, which are very delicious. I can’t wait for Christmas break to come!!!

Winter Break By Michael Helt

Winter break is very fun. There are endless possibilities to occupy yourself. There are winter sports, holidays, and indoor activities. There is a good bit of winter sports to keep yourself occupied over winter break. There is snowboarding, skiing, and ice skating. Snowboarding is like surfing but on land. You ride on a board down a snowy hill. Skiing is when you have long, curved stick-like poles that you use for balance and forward motion. You need to move yourself with the poles. Ice skating is when you wear blades on your feet and slide across icy areas. There are also some years where there is no snow during winter, such as last year. During those years, you cannot do these sports. Luckily, there are indoor activities to

Page 7: November 2016 Smile-O Gram The Smile-O Gram · Papa Louie Two: when burgers attack: you have to destroy the burgers and ... to their house we play outside in the snow if it’s snowing,

occupy you. You could do things such as build popsicle stick houses, listen to Christmas music, and play board games. It is tricky to build popsicle stick houses for some people. All I have to say to those people is that you just need to practice and have patience. You can do it if you try. There are also those dull years where all the grass and trees are frozen but there is no snow. It hurts when you fall and it is painful to run. The sharp, pointy grass pricks you every time you run. Well, lucky you. There is a solution to your problems. One solution is to wear multiple layers of socks. The grass may go through some layers, but not all of them. You will be safe to run around, but what if you trip? Again, there is a solution. You can put on a long sleeve shirt, then a heat generating shirt. Next, you need a light jacket. Finally, put on your large, puffy winter jacket. If you fall, you’ll be fine. Usually, people don’t feel as much pain in their legs as they do in their arms. Now, you’ll be all set to play outside in these conditions. Finally, there are the holidays. There is Christmas and New Year’s Eve. I would hope that you know the drill for Christmas. Firstly, you go to sleep. Secondly, Santa delivers presents. Then, you wake up. Next, you have to sit and wait for everyone to wake up. Finally, you get to open your beloved presents. On New Year’s Eve, it’s up to your family. On New Year’s Eve, I have a board game competition. We also have yummy, delicious foods such as shrimp and jalapeno poppers. Some people do it differently. It is fun for me, and hopefully for you, too. Well, those are some ways you could occupy yourself over winter break. Those are also some ways you could occupy yourself over dull winters. Hopefully, you have enough hobbies to last winter break. I hope you have a good winter break.

Hershey Kiss Cookie Recipe

By Ben Bailor

Do you like Hershey Kisses? How about cookies? If you answered yes, you will love this recipe! I make them a lot, especially during Christmas time. This is the items you will need to make the cookies. A bag of 48 Hershey Kisses ½ cup of shortening ¾ cup of creamy REESE’S Creamy Peanut Butter ⅓ cup of granulated sugar ⅓ cup of packed light brown sugar 1 egg 2 Tb spoons milk 1 T spoon vanilla extract 1-½ cup all-purpose flour 1 T spoon baking soda ½ T spoon salt Now you will begin to mix the ingredients. 1. You will need to pre-heat the oven to 375°F. Then remove the wrappers from chocolate kisses. 2. Beat the shortening and peanut butter in large bowl until it is well blended. Slowly add 1/3 cup granulated sugar and brown sugar; beat until fluffy. Add the egg, milk and vanilla; beat well. Stir together the flour, baking soda and salt, then slowly beat into peanut butter mixture. 3. Next, shape your dough into 1-inch balls and roll in granulated sugar (if you want to) and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake your cookies for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Immediately press a chocolate kiss into center of each cookie. The cookie may crack around edges. Remove them gently from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. This recipe makes about 48 cookies. I hope you enjoy these cookies. Don’t forget to share them with friends and family.

This Winter - This year

By Izzy Carvalho

The season is coming and that season is winter! Winter is the coldest season of the year. You can play certain sports in the winter, like hockey and ice skating. My favorite hockey teams are the Rangers and Boston Bruins. Hockey is an aggressive sport to play. You can get hurt easily by playing hockey. The way people get hurt is by bumping into each other for you to fall down onto the ice. Hockey can be a fun sport and is fun to watch. The gear you will need for hockey is skates, uniform, hockey stick, helmet and puck. You can buy the gear you need by going to a sports store. Some sports stores you can get your gear from are the Sports Authority, Olympia, Under Armor, Nike, Calvin Klein, and Sport King.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

By Ty Bates

There are Diary of a Wimpy Kid Books. I like the books because they are funny and entertaining. Jeff Kinney wrote eleven books of about a kid that lives in a family of five. He feels that he has the worst life in the world. I think Jeff Kinney is cool because he thought up an eleven book series that is really great. He must be really good at thinking up ideas and writing about them. You should read these books. I know you would really enjoy reading them.

Snowflakes

By CJ Mendoza

What are snowflakes? Did you know that each snowflake has six sides and are made up of about 200 ice crystals? The snowflakes start forming in the clouds as the temperature gets to below freezing. When tiny bits of dirt float up into the sky by the wind, that is when ice crystals

Page 13: November 2016 Smile-O Gram The Smile-O Gram · Papa Louie Two: when burgers attack: you have to destroy the burgers and ... to their house we play outside in the snow if it’s snowing,

are formed. The snow crystals continue to grow and they fall to the ground as become heavier. That is how a snowflake is created.

Reindeer Facts

By Emily Cabrera-Agostini

Reindeer are not only guide Santa’s sleigh but are really beautiful and magnificent animals. These are very interesting and amazing animals. I thought you’d like to know more about them. Reindeer are herbivores meaning they are plant eaters. A reindeer can live up to 15 years in the wild. A reindeer mostly has different shades of brown soft fur with white fur on their neck and

parts of their back. Their fur may also be gray or a rust like color. They weigh anywhere between 240-700 pounds. Reindeer are usually 4-5 feet tall not including their antlers. Their antlers are 3 feet tall. Did you know that reindeer are the only deer that both the male and female grow

antlers? The reindeer shed their antlers in the winter. Just like no human’s fingerprints are the same, neither are the reindeer antlers. The hooves of the reindeer are used to dig up their food in the snow. The outer edge of

their hooves is sharp that help them walk on the rocks and ice. Reindeer can run 50 miles per hour!

I hope you enjoyed and found it interesting to learn these facts about the reindeer.

Did you know?

This is the article the reporters wrote about the interview they had on DVE-TV about “High Five Fridays” with Dominique and Kirsten Dunn. Their story was published in the Pike County Dispatch newspaper December 1, 2016 issue. We are putting the reporters’ newspaper articles in the Smile-O-Gram to share with you and for those who may not have gotten the chance to see and read it. Here is their heartwarming story about “High Five Fridays” by reporter Abby Zimmerman.

High Five Fridays Interview with Dominique and Kirsten Dunn By Abby Zimmerman - DVE-News/TV Reporter

Just last week I interviewed Dominique and Kirsten Dunn about High Five Fridays. Dominique came up with the idea. High Five Fridays are about spreading kindness and making everyone happy. Dominique started it because people seemed sad about leaving school on the weekends because they couldn't see their friends. The first time they did it, it was good, the second Friday was okay and the third Friday was not as good, but after that it was really enjoyable and successful in spreading kindness. She was able to choose the teachers who were also involved in starting the movement. She chose those teachers because Dominique enjoyed their company. She enthusiastically responded that she did indeed design her t-shirt. Dominque responded enthusiastically that she was thinking about selling them (t shirts) to students in the hallway. I then asked Kirsten, her sister, a few questions. Kirsten decided to write about her sister in the Delaware Valley High School’s school paper, The DelAware. She wrote about how Dominque started High Five Fridays because she thought it was a nice act of kindness. Kirsten was a former DVE-News TV reporter. She felt that her experience as a DVE-News TV reporter definitely inspired her to write for The DelAware. Kirsten excitedly felt that her sister’s movement, High Five Fridays, will inspire other people in spreading kindness to others. I then told Dominique and Kirsten that we, at DVES, are practicing the Leader in Me and asked if they had any advice for us. They both responded that we should do our homework, spread the kindness, and have fun.

I then asked what they thought of the new DVE-News/TV room. Dominique and Kirsten found the room kind of small. Lastly they shared to always spread the kindness! Don't forget to high five someone today to make their day! Post note, as the Dunn sisters left the interview, students from Mrs. Connell and Mrs. Fean's classes high fived them on their way out!
