English Masters 2016On 13 August 2016, RSS sent 12 teams to participate in

the challenging English Masters 2016 held at Bedok Community Centre where they competed in the areas of language skills against other Primary 5 and 6 students in Singapore.

In our inaugural participation, one of the RSS teams did the school proud by emerging 2nd Runner Up in the competition. The team won a trophy each and $200 in cash, after a tie-breaker session with Nanyang Primary School. The team comprised Chew Han Lin, Valerie Chua Yu Jia, Er Zhi Xin and Chin Li Wen, all of whom are from 6 Care.

奖项。恭喜这些同学,希望他们再接再厉。

Nonetheless, I have all the reasons to be confident because character building forms the core beliefs and tenets of the teaching profession, be it in primary, secondary or tertiary.

That is why at RSS, we place a premium in nurturing the whole child. The child is at the centre of learning. Our beliefs about a child and how he learns guide us to help him be the best that he can be. Schools are institutions of learning and crucibles of socialisation. Character and Citizenship Education, therefore, provides the moral compass for students to develop characters anchored on strong values guided by an ethos of discipline, care and concern for self, family, friends and the community at large.

Recently, at the MOE Work Plan Seminar, Acting Minister for Education (Schools) Mr Ng Chee Meng also spoke about the importance of helping our students experience the joy of learning, to nurture an intrinsic motivation towards learning in every student. Scoring well in school examinations is important, but it should not be the end-goal of learning. Rather, learning is a lifelong journey of exploration and discovery, where one experiences deep personal fulfilment from acquiring new knowledge and skills.

I cannot help but to add that a deep sense of personal fulfilment from acquiring new knowledge and skills can indeed take one to greater heights in realising one’s dream and passion; and this may not necessarily be achieved through scoring well in examinations.

Great things happen because people dream!

It has always been my dream that every child who passes through our hands at RSS will be able to exhibit

the values of Care, Magnanimity, Respect, Honesty, Resilience, Responsibility, Helpfulness, Leadership and Teamwork exemplified by our Three Littles: Little Friend, Little Master and Little Teacher, even after they leave RSS.

As the Chinese idiom ‘十年树木,百年树人’ says, it takes ten years to grow a tree and a hundred years to cultivate a person.

Infocomm Development Authority (IDA)Lab on Wheels

RSS welcomed two Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) Lab on Wheels buses on campus on 3 and 4 August 2016. The mobile platform is retrofitted from a 40-seater bus that houses technology that is both engaging and fun to learn. With the help of the industry partners, the school hopes to ignite the young’s passion for technology through experiential activities such as coding through Minecraft!

Code For Fun

As Singapore works towards building

a smart nation to harness technology

to the fullest, RSS is getting our P5

students ready by exposing them to

coding during school-based enrichment.

The skills that students picked up

from the coding sessions will go far in

preparing them to be future ready for

the many demands as students have

to persevere in finding a solution to

different problems that may arise along

the way. Students got a taste of how

to run and write Scratch program. They

dragged blocks from the block palette

and attached them to other blocks like

a jigsaw puzzle to command the Moway

robot around.

P4 Chinese Culture and Leadership Adventure Camp

The P4 Chinese Culture and Leadership Adventure Camp 2016 brought students through a journey of self exploration in the best classroom - closer to nature and into the great outdoors. Blessed with fine weather for most parts of the camp, students had the opportunity to challenge themselves and overcome their fears.

National Day Celebration 2016The theme for this year National Day Parade (NDP) is Building Our Singapore of Tomorrow where efforts

in nation building continue to journey with hard work towards realising our dreams in building our future together.

We celebrated 51st National Day - the 1st year for the next 50 years in our journey towards SG100, on 8 August 2016 with an array of activities in the hall and classrooms. The celebration was marked with the Observance Ceremony, community singing, RSS Talents and quiz held in the classrooms. This year’s NDP theme song ‘Tomorrow’s Here Today’ was clearly the hot favourite amongst the champions of both the junior and senior categories of RSS Talents, a talent competition organised in conjunction with the National Day celebration. Well done, RSS students, for the patriotic showcase of your unique edition of ‘Building Our Singapore of Tomorrow’!

The Prefect Investiture 2016 - 2017 was held on 27 July 2016. The P3 and P4 prefects officially joined the Prefectorial Board during this ceremony. It marked the handing over of duties for the

newly elected Head Prefect and Assistant Head Prefects. The new team of executive members were also appointed to serve and be an exemplary role model for their fellow prefects.

This is the list of our Executive Members 2016 - 2017:

Children’s Day

We celebrated Children’s Day on 6 October 2016 with the theme, ‘Thinking Of Others’. For this year, celebrations started earlier for the students as recess activities were introduced. The most action came from the game station ‘Gotta Catch Them All’ as students collected stamps by aiming and throwing beanbags at cartoon characters. After they had successfully received all three stamps from the various stations set up around school, the students redeemed a prize from a variety of items given. Many enjoyed the recess activities, smiling from ear to ear. The celebrations then continued in the hall with more games and a skit and dance by the teachers. The students were at an all time high. The hall celebrations ended with video messages from the school leaders, teachers and school staff to the students, wishing them a Happy Children’s Day!

Watch me aim, throw and score!

Look at me designing my badge!

So many badges made by the students…

My very own badge!

Yipee! We collected all three stamps.

Strengthening Positive

Teacher-Student Relationship

Workshop

Building positive teacher-student relationship is important to

create a positive impact on the students in the classroom.

In order to strengthen positive teacher-student relationship, on

24 June 2016, two trainers from the Centre for Social-Emotional

Learning conducted a workshop and shared with the teachers the

importance of positive teacher-student relationship and how to

overcome challenges to build positive teacher-student relationship.

It was an engaging session and through the real-life examples and

practical strategies shared, teachers’ learning was invaluable and

they were more aware of the important role they play.

Towards A More Inclusive School - Special Needs Workshop

RSS teachers and school leaders attended a Special Needs Workshop on 1 June 2016, organised by AED LBS Miss Uma Sivalingam and Miss Nuraini Nordin.

The workshop had four different segments that helped teachers to:1) engage students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the classroom, by understanding the characteristics of this disorder, the way the students learn and think best which will help teachers modify the way they interact and teach these students2) understand how to incorporate movement, play and exercise to increase the chance of managing students with attention issues better and to improve students’ learning and behaviour in the classroom

3) understand the learning needs of dyslexia better and how they can help their students with this learning condition cope better with the mainstream curriculum4) reflect whether their students with Special Educational Needs are coping with the current standard curriculum and what the dos and don’ts that they need to take note of when working with Special Educational Needs students

P1 Parent Engagement - New PSLE Scoring

System in 2021A STEP TOWARDS HOLISTIC EDUCATION

On 13 July 2016, MOE announced the changes to PSLE scoring and Secondary One (S1) posting,

which will be implemented for the 2021 PSLE cohort (i.e. P1 students in 2016). The changes are a

part of a broader shift away from an excessive focus on academic results towards a holistic education.

A total of 98 parents turned up for the engagement session held in RSS by our school leaders on

27 August 2016. The main objectives of the engagement session are to help parents understand the

changes to the PSLE scoring and S1 posting and provide a platform for them to provide their feedback.

The PSLE changes alone will not be enough. All of us - educators, parents and the community-at-large - need

to play our part in making this paradigm shift to free up time and space for holistic education. Let us

work together to write the next chapter of this story.

Racial Harmony Day - Eurasian Culture

The theme for this year’s Racial Harmony Day (RHD) is ‘Our Cultural Heritage’. RHD is commemorated annually

on 21 July 2016 to remind us of the Racial Riots that took place in 1964 and concerted efforts are needed to

preserve the racial harmony we enjoy today.

In our belief in educating our students and preparing them to be a Little Friend who appreciates the cultural

differences we celebrate in our unique society make-up, we focus on the Eurasian Culture to better understand

this unique culture.

NE Committee had planned and implemented interesting and educational programmes and activities that sought

to create greater awareness of the unique culture of the local Eurasian community in Singapore.

Together with parent helpers from Parent Support Group, our teachers took on the role as Station Masters. They

shared with all our students in great details the historical background, cultural and customary practices that our

Eurasian friends have. Students had the opportunities to try out the traditional games that reflect the cultural

cohesion we share in Singapore.

Teachers’ Day

Celebration

Every RSS Teacher is a Gardener, they

grow seeds that grow forever.

In celebration of Teachers’ Day this year, the P5

Prefects worked tirelessly over a period of more

than two months to plan and prepare the concert,

decorations and gifts. This year, the Prefects also

collected messages from the students during

recesses so that all the students in RSS could

express their appreciation for their wonderful

teachers. All their effort was worthwhile as
