November 2016 has several National Health Observance days. The one I’m going to address in this article is Lung Cancer

Awareness. This subject is very close to me as my mother

passed away from lung cancer in 2008. My father had COPD and several of my friends and other members of my family had either

lung cancer or other lung problems resulting from smoking, working in a foundry with fumes or construction with asbestos.

One of my friends, who never smoked, has heart problems

resulting from second- hand smoke. Lung cancer often has no symptoms until it has spread. That is

because there are few specialized nerves in the lungs. Remind

your doctor of your medical history if you go in for a physical exam. That will enable him to find an accurate diagnosis if you

present with particular symptoms. Some symptoms may include:

coughing, blood in sputum, shortness of breath, wheezing, pain in the chest, fatigue, pneumonia, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing,

high pitched sound with taking a breath. It can also cause

symptoms far from the tumor involving the brain, bone, and liver. November 19 is The Great American Smoke Out.

It would be a great time to set the goal to quit smoking!!! Why Quit? The rewards of quitting are tremendous and begin

immediately! Benefits can begin within 20 minutes of quitting.

Quitting tobacco of any kind will improve your health, your finances, your self-esteem and your everyday life.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the

United States. Smoking changes the brain similar to changes that take place when a person uses drugs like heroin or cocaine.

It’s never too late to reverse the effects of smoking. Immediately

after quitting smoking, heart rate and blood pressure begin to return to normal. Within a few weeks, circulation improves and

the workload on the heart is decreased. You can do everyday activities without being out of breath. Your breath will smell

better and teeth will get whiter. Your clothes and hair will smell

better and you’ll have a better chance for fewer skin wrinkles!! Quit for your finances. Smoking is expensive and other forms of

tobacco are also. Smoking can cost $15,000 a year and that’s

being conservative.

Most of all, quit using tobacco for the people in your life. You

protect those you love from being around second hand smoke.

Mothers who smoke tend to have babies with low birth weight.

That can result in many conditions they may not have had or

develop such as asthma and chronic lung conditions. Second hand

smoke can cause eye irritation, headaches, nausea and dizziness.

Children may have more ear infections, colds, and bronchitis.

Most of all, you’ll be around longer for your children and

grandchildren to love you!!!!

This month, I just want to briefly review some important information and reminders ~ ~ Please see the “TRIAD” section of the newsletter. November’s presentation is on Active Shooter, and I would encourage you go if you can. ~ Just a reminder, if you choose to be a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) you MUST be wearing Wisconsin DNR bracelet. WI State Law says that if you are not wearing the bracelet, first responders are to begin CPR if you are found unresponsive in an out of hospital or facility setting. Contact your doctor of myself to learn more about the bracelet and what is required to get one. ~ Just a reminder that we have a brand new evening caregivers group on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month at 5:30. Light dinner included! Speaking of, November is National Family Caregivers Month. And, with November 11th being Veterans Day, I would also like to take a moment to thank every man and women who has served our Country. Because of your sacrifice, we are able to call American the home of the free, because if the brave.

****Thank you Veterans! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families! P.S - Dul Pacáiste Dul! (That’s Go Pack Go in Irish) ~ Be

As the island's sole inhabitant, he finds comfort in the monotony of the chores and the solitude of his surroundings. When he meets the daughter of the school's headmaster, Isabel Graysmark, in the local town of Partageuse on the mainland, Tom is immediately captivated by her beauty, wit and passion, and they are soon married and living on the island. As their love flourishes, he begins to feel again, their happiness marred only by their inability to start a family, so when a rowboat with a dead man and infant girl mysteriously washes ashore, Isabel believes their prayers may have finally been answered.

*+-$ -.-$ 1*!?++@-01 -A($$@We continue our look at the history of longtime Verona area businesses with our guest Debbie Bass of Park Printing. Debbie's parents Marge and Wib Dudley started the business in 1952 in Madison, moving to Verona in 1968. Initially focused on creating financial advertising materials for local banks, the company's focus changed to become a self contained printing house, leading to relationships with big clients such as Nicolet Instruments (for whom they printed product manuals). Park Printing of Verona is an example of a small family owned business growing along with Verona, yet keeping close family ties as four generations have been part of it. Debbie and her sister Jean both married brothers from the Bass family (Tim and John, respectively) - all four being eventually involved with the business. Currently Debbie and Tom’s son Greg is president. Join us in enjoying this story of what it takes to keep a family and business thriving through the generations in our favorite small town.
