[Commandant’s Corner]

Greetings Detachment Members!!!

At our meeting on Nov. 21st, Jack White informed us he was moving to Indiana and would not be attending any more meetings. (His new email address is: [email protected]). Give him a shout. His snail mail address is: 5704 East 400 North, Monticello, Indiana, 47960 It’s his daughter’s address; she will forward the messages. Let him know that he can run, but as a member of “The Best Damned Detachment in the Nation,” he can’t hide. I will keep sending Detachment emails so he knows what his Lake County “brothers” are up to. We will miss seeing you, Jack!

The calendar has to slow down. As I said, our meeting was the 21st. Thanksgiving was the 24th, and the Antioch Christmas Parade was the 25th for our Detachment Color Guard (froze our Tu-Tus.). The 26th was another Toys for Tots event at the Mundelein Jewel/Osco, and it was a success…Leo “The Magician” was there, and now we are already into December.

Our Senior Vice Jerry Pedrin and his crew are on a tear with Toys for Tots. Only three more events are scheduled. Join in and see what the fun is about!

We need members for the Hospital Visitation Team, We need members for the Color & Honor Guard,We need members for the Eagle Scout Program,

WE NEED NEW MEMBERS!!

To all Marines and FMF Corpsmen of The Best Damned Detachment in the Nation, my wish for you is a very Merry Christmas…Happy Holidays and a safe and sane Happy New Year! May all of you be blessed with good health and good fortune in 2017.

Semper Fidelis!

[Chaplain’s chat]

December, 2016

My fellow Marines, by the Grace of God, I am able to again communicate with you through this medium. I hope and pray that we all enjoyed a safe and wonderful thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving allows us to pause, and give thanks to the ONE that makes it all possible. HE blesses us with family, friends good food and memories that will last a lifetime!

Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas season. We thank HIM, as a family during thanksgiving and as a family, rejoice in celebrating HIS birthday.

Christmas is the favorite time of the year for many of us, dressing our homes in lights, decorating trees, shopping for loved ones and setting aside our troubles and tribulations, if for a short while.

It is easy to lose track of whose birthday we’re celebrating!

We’re celebrating the birth of the One who saved us from our sins by taking the judgment and punishment that is rightly ours to bear. That ONE who showed us how to love our neighbor, the example of selfless sacrifice for others, something not lost on the many who have done so in battle for their fellow warriors.

He is the example of how to live righteously. Lets resolve to be more like HIM, not just during the coming year, but also for the rest of our lives.

God bless you, Merry Christmas and Semper FI.

Merry Christmas to the "Best damn detachment in the Nation."I know if you have checked the weather in the past month or so you would think it is early fall.  It is hard to believe that Christmas will be here in a couple weeks.I know that most of you believe as I do that no kid should wake up Christmas morning without getting a Christmas gift or two. Those gifts should not be one they NEED but ones they WANT.  I also believe that all the times we stood in the cold, wind, and bad weather these past few weeks will be worth it Christmas morning when the kids ope the toys we were able to provide.  I know we have been given a few winkles in our program this year.  We are Marines; we excel in the ability to adapt, improvise,  and overcome, and this little bump in the road will be no exception.I would like to thank all of you who took time our of your busy schedules to show up each week at our fundraisers for the kids.We are almost finished for the year and I believe we all should feel good about the effort we have put forward.  I would like to wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you and your families.

Jeopardy Question:

  On

Jeopardy the other night, the final question was

"How many steps does the guard take during his

walk across the tomb of the Unknowns?"

All three contestants missed it!    This is really an awesome sight

to watch if you've never had the chance.

Fascinating. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

1. How many steps does the guard

take during his walk across the tomb of the

Unknowns and why?

HOSPITAL VISITATION TEAM

On November 10 the Team visited the Lovell Health Center to celebrate   the M.C's 241 BIRTHDAY. The first stop was at Bldg 66 for the cake cutting. This was officiated by Commandant Richard Butler. All of the patients present received a piece of cake. The team then visited the wards in Bldg. 133, 134 and two of the Greenhouses. At these locations cupcakes were presented to the staff who in turn distributed them to the patients. At all of the locations where a Marine was identified, a small gift was given to the individual.

Hello Marines & FMF Corpsman, we participated in the Antioch Christmas Parade on 11-25 at 1830. After the parade the members went to the Thirsty Horse on Rt 45 just over the border for some hot chocolate. The people in the tavern thought that these Vets needed something more than that and bought them a few rounds of something stronger. They are also helping out with Toys for Tots so if you are in the area please stop in and have something to eat and perhaps some liquid refreshment.                                                 MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL                                                    John Pickelman 801 Color & Honor Guard

DirectorsBob Hames, Randy Christopher, Ed Mampe, Warren Blacklock

Purpose of the Foundation as a 501 3 (c) tax exempt organization is to provide comfort, support, financial assistance and educational aid to improve the quality of life for military personnel in all branches of the United States Armed Forces and veterans who have served and their families.

Dave Bowman has resigned from the Board of Directors after having served for several years. We all thank Dave for his help.

Our first meeting of the new Board of Directors will be on Dec. 8th at the Golden Coral in Gurnee at 10:00 am (1000). I hope to be able to announce a replacement for Dave at that time. This will be the first meeting for our new Members, Gerry Pedrin and Jim Sroka. We will discuss the purpose of the Foundation, how we can raise funds and how we donate money.

If you know of any Veteran or Veteran’s family that needs help, please let me know. We want to help.

Husband and Wife Christmas Shopping (family humor)

A couple were in a busy shopping center just before Christmas. The wife suddenly noticed that her husband was missing and a...s they had a lot to do, so

she called him on the mobile. The wife said, " Where are you, you know we have lots to do."

He said, "You remember the jewelers we went into about 10 years ago, and you fell in love with that diamond necklace? I could not afford it at the time and I said

that one day I would get it for you?"Little tears started to flow down her cheek and she got all

choked up…"Yes, I do remember that shop." She replied.“Well, I am in the gun shop next door to that."
