Musings from the Manse …………………………………….by Rev’d Phillip Poole “Whosoever will, whosoever will,” Send the proclamation over vale and hill; Tis a loving Father calls the wanderer home: Whosoever will may come.” Jesus was a master story-teller, and his stories always had a point to them. So in Matthew 22 when Jesus tells the story of a bizarre wedding banquet he does so because he wants to teach us something important about life. In this story a certain King invites his friends to the wedding of his son, but when the big day arrives the invited guests all make their excuses – not one of them turns up, and despite the King’s pleading they can’t be persuaded to attend. So the King sends his servants out into the highways and byways, telling them to invite to the banquet everyone they meet, regardless of who they are or what they may have done – no one is to be excluded and all are welcome. Similarly, in life God invites us to know him through Christ and to be part of his family. As in the story the invitation is for everyone. Not one of us is so bad that we are excluded, and that’s what is so amazing about grace - “Whosoever will may come!” And the invitation is to a feast, for God encourages us to enjoy to the full the rich variety of opportunities and experiences that life offers us, and to understand ourselves as people loved and blessed by God, freely forgiven and in turn enabled to love and bless others. “I have come” said Jesus, “that they might have life in all its fullness.” But the invitation requires a response from us. We have the choice either to make our excuses and stay away, or to accept God’s invitation and enter into life - a choice almost forty years ago I made as a teenager. It’s a fact that the invitation is for everyone, but more particularly the invitation is for you! And I say choose Jesus and choose life – come to the feast! Best wishes to all, Phil

Country Beat ……………………………………..……by PCSO Lynne Maurice I’d like to start this month with good news to report, that there have been no major crimes in Overton or surrounding areas in the last couple of months. That doesn’t mean we can afford to be less vigilant, everyone stills needs to look out for each other, especially the elderly and vulnerable residents around us. Now that the dark nights are upon us, we need to keep our guard up. This is the time of year when we sadly begin to experience what we call ‘Twilight Burglaries’ where offenders use the early darkness to their advantage. So make sure you have your timers for lighting available to deter any would-be criminals or opportunists out there. Check your outside lighting and CCTV is working to its full capacity. Also, as I mention every year, some of us may have started our Christmas shopping already, make sure you don’t leave any presents on show either through the windows or in your vehicles. Just to make you aware, there have been recently, although in other areas, a few thefts of vehicle registration number plates. Vehicle registration number plate theft is becoming a major problem in the UK. Once stolen the vehicle registration number plates are fitted to other vehicles and used in many criminal activities. The simple solution to combat this crime is to replace the existing vehicle number plate screws with a stainless-steel clutch head anti-tamper proof screw. We have Tamperproof Vehicle Registration Kits available from OWL at the small cost of £2.50 per kit. See http://www.owlcymru.org/shop/shop.html The kit comprises of:- 4 sets of black security caps & also have 2 sets of white & 2 sets of yellow and an assortment of five different sizes of stainless steel clutch head screws (total of 20) suitable for all vehicles. The kit has full fitting instructions inside each pack. Please note that once the anti-tamper proof screws have been fitted you may need to obtain professional advice if you need to remove the vehicle registration number plate in the future. Don’t bother kits are also available from us priced at £1.50 each. These act as a reminder to remove all valuables on display in your vehicle. It also acts as a warning to potential thieves that the vehicle owner has taken care to remove all values from the vehicle.

Playcentre News October has been a busy month with the children enjoying learning all about our Sea World, and they especially liked learning about the different fishes. They have had a fun time celebrating Diwali and are now beginning to get ready for the Winter topic of ‘Our World of Snow’, after which they will all be wanting a cute Penguin or Polar Bear for Christmas! We wish to thank everybody who has got involved in some way to support our Nearly New Sale. Huge gratitude goes to all shoppers, sellers, cake makers, and helpers on the day and in the preparation beforehand. Nicola Edwards led the way this time and did a great job and we raised nearly £500, well done Nicola. We are looking forward to our Thanks Giving Service at St Marys Church on the 5th November at 10am. We welcome everyone as the Playcentre has touched so many lives over the past 50 years. This will conclude our celebrations for our Golden Year. We are still undergoing recruitment for the vacancy at the Playcentre, experienced and minimum Level 3 NVQ qualified required. The Playcentre runs on the ethos of team work and we do pretty well! We are a voluntary committee and members are parents to the children who attend. But we are always looking to increase our committee as with such busy lifestyles and young children we could always do with just a little extra HELP! Therefore we would like to extend our invitation more formally to including anyone in the community, who wishes to donate a little of their time to our Charity. For instance, we are in need of help to maintain our back garden and drive way, (neither are particularly big!) Plus if anyone would describe themselves as a ‘Handyman/Handyperson’ it would be wonderful if we could on occasion contact you to help with small DIY issues. There is no catch or long term commitment required, it is as simple as we offer a great cuppa and cake in exchange of some time given to the Playcentre to help keep it in top notch working order to be enjoyed by the youngest members of our community. If you are thinking that you could help in any way or would like to learn more please call on 01978 710688. Sarah Evans

A Special Birthday The September meeting of Overton W.I. was held in the Catholic Church Hall, when Laura Evison gave a Floral Art demonstration, "Autumn Delights".During the evening, Mrs Betty Williams, the Institute's longest serving member, was presented with gifts and a card to celebrate her 90th Birthday in October. She is seen here cutting the cake which she shared with all her friends at the W.I.

Happy Birthday, Betty !

Overton-on-Dee Community Growers ( formerly the Overton Community Gardeners) Overton on Dee Community Growers are a relatively newly formed small group of enthusiasts who organise Community Tidy Up days in the Village and plant and look after areas within Overton with the aim of enhancing our beautiful Conservation Village. We are hoping to expand our numbers so that we can do more work around the Village. We usually meet at the White Horse on a Thursday at 8 pm but please look out for dates of meetings on the Village Notice Board or on the Overton Community Facebook page if you’d like to join us, either occasionally or more regularly.

Our first ‘official’ year has been a busy one. On our first Community Tidy Up Day we managed to clear 15 bags of leaves from under the Horse Chestnut trees in the pouring rain! Thankfully, this was followed by copious amounts of tea and homemade cake! Later on, we obtained some funding from Overton Community Council which has enabled us to purchase troughs, fill hanging baskets and plants for outside the Cocoa Rooms from Eastwick Plant Centre and to buy plants from Knolton Nurseries for the border in front of the Village Hall (see photo left). We are grateful to both Nurseries for their help too in advising us on planting. We’ve had lots of lovely comments passed on to us from various sources about how much you have enjoyed them. Thank you!

We ran a stall for the first time at the Village Fete, mainly from donated items, and managed to make a profit of £75, enabling us to buy prizes for our Sunflower Competition winners and more plants for the Village. 65 packets of free sunflower seeds, provided by group member Margaret O’Neill, were kindly distributed by the Corner Shop, M E Evans Butchers and the Library. We intend to do this again next year. Our hanging basket competition is growing too, and we were fortunate enough to be able to give free tickets for 4 to Chirk Castle to the winner, courtesy of the judge, the National Trust’s Head Gardener at Chirk Castle, David Lock. Next year we hope to extend this competition to troughs, window boxes and maybe even front gardens! We also cleared and planted the overgrown planters outside the toilets by the car park with sunflowers grown by Group member Rachel Harris. (see photo right) We will replace the sunflowers when they have died down with lavender and geraniums. The wicking boxes outside the Scout Hut are popular within the village. These have now been cleared after the summer. Claire Christian and Clare Latham will again be working alongside the various groups of children who help to look after them, making insect homes and bird feeders for over the winter. The baskets and troughs have also been cleared too, ready for winter planting. We have some other exciting plans afoot too, as well as other events beginning around the Festive Season. Please look out for the posters that will be going up soon and come along to support us. In the meantime, thank you for all the lovely comments that we have received. It makes all of our efforts worthwhile!

MP welcomes new driving sentencing laws Susan Elan Jones MP has paid tribute to campaigners who worked across party political lines to secure a major commitment from the Ministry of Justice. The Government Department this week announced that it would increase maximum sentences for drivers who cause death by speeding, racing or using a mobile phone. Offenders who cause death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs will also face life sentences, and a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving will be created. The Clwyd South MP said:“Nothing we do can ever bring back those people whose lives have been tragically cut short on our nation’s roads – nearly 1,800 of them last year alone. However, I believe that we owe it to their loved ones to do all we can to make sure we have better laws and fewer road accidents” Ms Jones launched her campaign in conjunction with residents of Overton who had experienced a tragic incident in 2009 when a 9yr old boy was run over and killed by a driver who had no license, no insurance and failed to stop.

2017 Overton Produce Show Another year – the 45th - with continued loyal support of exhibitors, judges and viewers. All entrants work very diligently to produce their entries in pristine condition for judging and the Trophy winners were reported in last month’s Oracle. In 2014 record entries were reported with 316 exhibits overall. This year exceeded that figure with a total of 366 entries! The classes were well supported with only 4 lacking entries. There were 357 entries in the Adult classes and 9 entries in the Children’s classes. The Vegetable section had 80 entries, Fruit section 63 entries, Blooms section 49 entries, Preserves 51 entries, Pot Plants 16 entries, Floral Art 27 entries, Cookery 49 entries, Preserves 51 entries, Wine 22 entries and 9 Children’s entries. The number of entries in the fruit classes reflected a very good year for apples with 16 entries in the dessert apple class. The skillful entries in the Floral Art section along with the blooms made a very colourful display attracting admiration from viewers. It was also very good to see some newcomers’ names on the prize cards. As always the Judges expressed their congratulations on the high standard of exhibits. Their expertise and advice is very much appreciated. Refreshments were served by WI members. and Mrs Sue Cooke, President of the WI presented the trophies. Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses and individuals – a big THANK YOU to all. The Show could not take place without the preparation beforehand and help from volunteers not forgetting our Village Hall for the amenities. Another successful Show. If you missed this one don’t lose out, reserve the date of Saturday 1 Sept 2018 for the 46th Show.

St. Mary’s School News On Tuesday 3rd October, Years 3 & 4 went to Outlook Meadow, Malpas. Linking to their topic of the ‘Great Outdoors’ & Harvest, they decided the meadow and woodlands would be a perfect fit for their studies. The children engaged in activities such as cooking popcorn over the fires that they made, baking bread, making compasses, and going on treasure hunts. The activities were met with great enthusiasm by the children. When interviewed about their trip, building fires and baking bread appeared to be the favourite activities; for many it was a new experience. Daisy from Yr 4 told us enthusiastically “I felt like Bear Grylls! Making fires was the highlight of my day!”. Teaching Assistant, Mrs Davies, said: “The children have really benefited from the visual and hands-on learning experience to bring our topic work to life.” The trip was an enjoyable experience for pupils and teachers alike. Thanks to the staff at Outlook Meadow for a memorable school trip.
