Stewardship of Witness

Dear Parishioner,

An external gesture of reverence can become a

witness to the truths of our faith. This said, I

would like to remind everyone of habits and prac-

tices which are not appropriate

The rule of fasting from solid food for an hour

before one receives the Eucharist still stands.

This makes chewing gum in Church both disre-

spectful and inappropriate.

Although the Church does not require everyone to be dressed in their finest every

week for Mass, please remember that the way we dress for Church is often a sign

of how important the celebration of the Eucharist is for us. Overly casual and/or

sloppy clothing and bare midriffs are never appropriate.

Another thing that we all need to consider and remember is that Church is meant

to be a sacred space, a place where all can pray and worship. While a cordial

greeting is never out of place, carrying on an audible and protracted conversation

is never appropriate.

And lastly, because of our belief in the presence of Christ in the tabernacle, we

should always genuflect to the cross and the altar, and on entering the pews. (Of

course, if you have bad knees like I do, a bow is appropriate also!)

I hope this reminder of habits in Church will encourage renewed reverence and

prayerful attitude in our community.

Yours in Christ,

- Fr. Pat Click

We are a little over the half way point of our 2017 - 2018 Fruitful Harvest/Bishops Appeal drive. This biennial

drive supports the work of the universal church and the Lafayette diocese. These funds go a long way in

helping us and others grow and nurture our Catholic faith.

If you pledged and still have an outstanding balance you should be receiving reminders from the diocese. If

those reminders haven’t come or are incorrect, please contact Scott Bernhardt* so we can correct their

records.

For each Fruitful Harvest campaign our parish is given a goal that we are expected to reach through dona-

tions. This past campaign we came up short of goal and this shortage will need to come out of our operating

fund. Most parishioners have made a donation or pledge and we can’t thank you enough.

We are still $40,000.00 short so if you haven’t had the opportunity to make a gift yet to Fruitful Harvest, we

ask if you'd consider a donation now, again the campaign runs until August 2018. Or if you’re able to make

an additional gift this year or next year to help, we’d also appreciate that. All donations can be placed in the

weekly offertory basket in an envelope marked Fruitful Harvest or dropped off at the parish office or sub-

mitted electronically.

Some of your support of Fruitful Harvest goes towards:

• Building the endowment for retired priest.

• Providing funds for seminary students.

• Providing resources such as literature and curriculum for the religious education for all, especially our

youth (for both our religious education classes and parish school).

Supporting Pope Francis with the universal church’s outreach and missions around the world.

Your support of Fruitful Harvest is important to our faith as Catholics. Again thank you.

*If you have any questions about Fruitful Harvest please contact Scott Bernhardt [email protected] or 317-842-6778

x294 or Fr. Pat or Fr. Travis.

Meet our Brazil Mission Seminarian, Sergio Rocha!

In this three-part series, you will have a chance to get

acquainted with the seminarian from our sister parish,

Sao Jose, in Brazil. This wonderful young man is well

known among our mission travelers, going all the way

back to our first group trip in March 2002. He was a

young boy at that time, but already felt the calling to

the priesthood! Please pray for him as he prepares to

be ordained to the diaconate on December 23rd, 2017,

and to the priesthood in August 2018.

Sergio’s story - Part 1

I, Sérgio Vieira da Rocha, was born on November 17, 1992, in the city of Telêmaco Borba, Paraná. Coming

from a Christian family, I was educated in the Catholic faith by my parents Domingos and Vanda. From a very

early age I felt the desire to be a priest. In 2001, when the São José Parish was created, I had the grace to be

the first altar boy in the city. Little by little I was grow-

ing and the vocational desire increased.

At the age of 15 I began to discern my vocation in

more depth. Helped by my parish priest, Father Nel-

son Bueno, and later by Father Gilberto, I understood

what it was to be a priest and give myself to Jesus

Christ. At age 17, through a city radio interview with a

newly ordained priest, I discovered that it was time to

give a definite answer.

(Meet our Brazil Mission Seminarian, Cont.)

On February 2, 2010, I became part of the Congrega-

tion of the Servants of the Eucharist, taking the reli-

gious habit and starting the novitiate.

The Servants of the Eucharist is a religious congrega-

tion whose charism is Perpetual Adoration of the

Blessed Sacrament. It had its origins in the 19th century

in France with Saint Peter Julian Eymard and the Con-

gregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament

(Sacramentinos). In the year 1979 the congregation in

Brazil underwent some reforms, appearing the Serv-

ants of the Eucharist. Our primary function within the

Church is to promote solemn and perpetual worship to

the Blessed Sacrament. First of all, through the Order's

own religious and priests and with all the people of

God. In the city of Ponta Grossa (Brazil), where the

main house is, the Congregation carries out its work in

the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a church

destined for perpetual adoration.

Stay tuned for part 2 of Sergio’s story in the next newsletter!
