- Micheline Ricard

Shaileshwara Sivakumar is shown sitting with some of the output done this month on our 3D printers. Students have been printing like crazy this past month, creating castles (with working drawbridges), masks for Lego figures, and jewelry boxes. And those are just a few of their designs! We have also printed a socket wrench (designed by NASA for work on the Space Station), a working scale model of a scissor jack (seen in Shailesh's hand), and a puzzle box used for the Yellowknife Escape Room experience. If you can think it, you can design it, and then you can print it!“3D printing is a technology that will shape the future”, said Shailesh.

The winner for the October tech photo contest winner is Kathy Truong. The rule was simple: take a photo at school with a person in it. Judges comments were: “Very nice composition. Bit of mystery in the subject. Liked the framing of subject. Nice clouds and slight over-exposure work very well with frost on the grass.”

Grades 6 and 9 Alberta Achievement Tests (AATs) Quick Facts for Parents/Guardians What are AATs? Alberta Achievement Tests (AATs) are standardized tests administered to Northwest Territories’ students in grades 6 and 9. The AATs are developed by Alberta, and have four main purposes in the NWT:

• to determine if students are learning what they are expected to learn; • to assist in the establishment and maintenance of territorial standards for education programs; • to assist schools, authorities, and the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) in monitoring and

improving student learning; • to report to residents of the NWT how well students have achieved standards at given points in their formal

education. Alberta Achievement Tests in Grade 3 were discontinued by Alberta Education in 2014 and they are no longer available for use in the Northwest Territories. When are AATs administered? AATs are administered annually in May and June in English Language Arts, French Language Arts, and Mathematics. However, grade 9 students who take either Language Arts or Mathematics courses that end in the first semester may be expected to write AATs during the January session. Please check with your child’s teacher to confirm. Are there any practice questions my child can do before writing AATs? Yes. Students can try out the released questions from previous AATs that are located at https://questaplus.alberta.ca/PracticeMain.html. When will I find out my child’s AAT results? Each fall, Individual Student Profiles (ISPs) are made available to schools. Schools then share the ISPs with parents and keep a record of the ISP on the student’s record in accordance with Education All Our Children: Procedures, Roles and Responsibilities for Student Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting (2011-2012). Want to know more? More information and resources for the AATs are available on the Alberta Education website at https://education.alberta.ca/provincial-achievement-tests. The personal information for the Alberta Achievement Testing program is collected pursuant to sections 40(c), 41(1)(b) and 48(a) of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act for assessing the achievement of students, and for program administration, student support programs and policy evaluation. Student information will be shared with the Department of Education, Culture and Employment and Alberta Education under the authority of the Act section 48(a) for the purpose of processing the tests and assessing results according to course standards. Questions regarding the collection, use and disclosure of this personal information may be directed to Ms. Andrea Giesbrecht, Director of Education Operations and Development Division, Department of Education, Culture and Employment, 2nd Floor Lahm Ridge Tower, 4501-50th Avenue, Yellowknife, NT X1A 2L9, by email at [email protected] or by telephone at (867) 767-9353 ext 71260. Grade 12 Diploma Exams for NWT Students Quick Facts for Students and Parents/Guardians What are Diploma Exams? Diploma exams are examinations which are administered to NWT students in select grade 12 courses that use Alberta curriculum. These exams are developed by Alberta Education, and have four main purposes in the NWT:

• to certify the level of individual student achievement in selected grade 12 courses; • to report results to individual students as well as overall results to NWT residents; • to ensure the establishment and maintenance of territorial standards for education programs; • to assist schools, authorities, and the NWT in monitoring and improving student learning.

When are Diploma Exams administered? Diploma exams are administered annually in January, April, June, August, and November according to the Alberta Education schedule posted in the General Information Bulletin at https://education.alberta.ca/diploma-exam-administration/general-information-bulletin. Are there any practice questions available to students before writing diploma exams? Yes. Students can try out the released questions from previous diploma exams that are located at https://questaplus.alberta.ca/PracticeMain.html. How will results from Diploma Exams be shared with students? Approximately 3 weeks after the administration of diploma exams, student results are available to students on myPass at https://mypass.alberta.ca. In order to sign-up on myPass students will need their Alberta Student Number (ASN), a personal email, and a correct mailing address on file with Alberta Education.
