6th GRADE - THE SUPREME TEAM

MATH, Ms. Johnson and Mr. AdamsonSixth grade math students have just started a new module covering ratios, percents, units rates, and conversions. There is a Carnegie Learning Family Guide at the beginning of every topic (see page M2-5 and M2-6) that reviews main ideas of the topic and outlines some of the mathematical models we will be using as students learn ratios.

Ask your students what projects they are working on in their enrichment class! These hands-on projects give students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the math concepts we are learning in core.

As we begin the new quarter, it is important that students continue to do their homework and turn it in! Please email if you ever have questions or concerns.

SOCIAL STUDIES, Mrs. SmartWe are wrapping up our first persuasive essay in social studies. The student studied the values of ancient Mesopotamia, and also understood the concept of justice. They analyze some of the 282 laws of Hammurabi. Then, they learn to take their ideas and write a persuasive essay illustrating if they thought the laws were just (fair). In addition, students will start their exploration of ancient Egypt and uncover many hidden secrets of this ancient civilization. Furthermore, please take 2-3 minutes daily to talk with your child about current events and school happenings ☺

LANGUAGE ARTS, Mrs. Pfannenstiel and Mrs. SpragueParents-In LA, will be starting our Heroes Unit. This unit focuses on heroes in literature. It challenges students to examine various types of literary heroes in order to analyze and

evaluate admirable qualities of a hero as well as the potential everyone possesses to be heroic. Every society has its own heroes; everyone has a set of values for which they feel strongly about heroism. Suggested texts help build students’ understanding of heroes and heroic actions. The close reading selection, “No Thought of Reward” by Mawi Asgedom, invites students to read a nonfiction speech to determine central ideas that solidify students’ understanding of heroism and helps answer the essential questions. Students will have multiple opportunities to respond through writing, listening, and speaking. Don’t forget that your child should be reading 20 minutes every night and parents need to sign their reading log weekly. Homework Sheets will be coming home on Monday and are done every Friday.

Here’s one recognition for our November Students of the Month! Congratulations!

8th Grade NewsMrs. Sutton’s English Language Arts class completed a team building activity where students had to worktogether to stack the cups.

Ms. Jennings Social Studies students have finished fighting the American Revolution, and the Patriots wonthe fight for Independence. In November, we will look at the Articles of Confederation, the formation of ourConstitution, and the development of our government.

7th Grade NewsSocial studies students will be writing a paper called the Document Based Question (DBQ). The DBQ it is atough assignment but we take it in stages. The purpose of the DBQ is to develop the skills to take and defend aposition using facts. We will also begin our Unit on Latin America. Students will be assigned a country from Lat-in America which they will research and create a Google Slides, and present their country to the class. For manythis causes a bit of stage but will hopefully spark some interest as well.

Language Arts classes are continuing to pilot one of several possible new district curriculum resources whichinclude a write-in student text, audio/video selections, on-line access to texts and assignments, and more. Selec-tions are chosen for whole group and small group collaboration as well as independent reading. The focus of ourcurrent unit is on different generations and what we can learn from each other. Teachers piloting new curriculumwill come together in December to help the district make a decision on what resources we will be using in thefuture.
