November 2018 Volume 26, Number 8 P resident’s Corner Happy Thanksgiving to all H4W members and their families. Please remember that the holiday season begins with thanks for all of our blessings. The blessings we have were given and are given to us by those who served and are serving in uniform around the world. Our club will take part in the annual Veteran’s Day parade on November 11 with decorated jeeps and “Thank a Vet” signs. Our annual Turkey Roast will be held on Sunday, November 4 at the Rodeo Grounds and should be great fun. A great big thank you to Joella Bruno, Cheri Lansing and Jerry Kuhnle for coordinating these events. Thanks also goes to everyone who will take part in the parade and Turkey Roast. I want to thank everyone who participated in our annual food drive by donating non-perishable food items at our October H4W meeting. Your generosity will make the holiday season brighter for many. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots donation scheduled for the meeting this month. A representative of the Marine Corps League will be at our meeting to receive the toys. November is a very busy month with jeep runs, Death Valley and possible desert or highway cleanups. Mark your calendar so you can take part in as many activities as possible. We continue to need more trail leaders, so give it a try. Remember, there’s no dust in front! Once again, Happy Thanksgiving to all and Happy Trails to You. Charles Leipart

Secret Pass/Richardson Ranch Oct. 15 A group of 7 jeeps braved the winds and headed over to Bullhead City from I40/Terrible Herbst. Richard Gill led the way as we journeyed through the desert over to Secret Pass with a quick stop at "The Stripper Pole" for some giggles and a quick picture. Upon reaching Secret Pass we crawled over a few small waterfalls and a small squeeze to find ourselves oohing and awing over the beauty found in the Pass. After lunch we took off through the desert again, dodging a few meandering cattle, and headed over to Richardson Ranch. We marveled at the true grit it took to homestead and the buildings that were left for us to wander through and admire. Our final stop was a short trip up to see where the old hwy 68 went through and watch the travelers on the new one.

PLAC letter 10-20-2018 from Jim Bowen A note to our members from your Public Lands Access Committee (PLA Committee)

1600 miles of trails going to be closed! If you have seen the headlines in the local paper—you may have been given the impression that the “sky is falling” as far as our trails are concerned in the Hualapai mountains and Kingman BLM area. ACTION TO TAKE: Relax! Your committee-Bob Scholl, Darryld Kautzmann, John Strong, and myself have been in touch with the Kingman BLM office and still enjoy a very good relationship with them! Most of the “brew Ha” referred to in the papers was and is coming from a group of folks in the Kingman area that have really NOT had a relationship with the BLM. These folks feel the way they can talk to the BLM is to have a commission that off-roaders can talk to. The commission would then talk to the Mohave County Supervisors. The supervisors would then talk to the BLM and carry more weight. Our club’s situation is that when we have a challenge with the BLM we go straight to the person in charge of that area and usually have an answer within a few days!

Travel Management Plan (TMP) that the Kingman office is in charge of has been given an “extension” until November 30th for feedback from off roaders. We have been working with the Kingman office for the last 10 years and look at this extension as “one last chance to make sure all of our trails are included”. Kingman BLM has been very open and receptive to input on trails. (Kingman BLM had a ½ day meeting with 5-6 members from the Bullhead club, where they brought in their trails/runs in digital form and put them up on a big screen and went over them one at a time with the BLM person typing notes on each trail. The Bullhead club was very happy with the meeting results.) This is what can happen when an organized group works with the BLM. Our club has been coordinating our trails in the Kingman BLM TMP area by funneling them to Bob Scholl (our club trail computer guru) who then forwards them to Kingman. We have had a very open, receptive, and appreciative response from Kingman BLM on everything we have shared with them. POINT: The main thing the BLM needs from any trail user is a digital copy of their track/run. The BLM can then realize that a group of people “uses” this section of their inventory.

Havasu TMP: Havasu area was the first area our club really got involved in. We sent in digital copies of our run tracks and many letters and emails about the runs we were afraid were going to be closed. The end result was that 99% of our trails were all kept open.

Cat-tail Cove Area: Currently the Havasu BLM office is now attempting to finish the area where our runs are in the ”Cat-tail Cove” south to the Bouse area. We are currently gathering trails that our members have run in the past. We are then giving these to Bob Scholl who forwards them to the Havasu BLM. We had a very positive and productive meeting with the Havasu BLM this past week about our runs in the “Cat-tail Cove” area. We will give our club members an update when we get the feedback from the BLM we are waiting for.

Bill Williams’s road from #95 to Mineral Wash. Two of our members, John Strong and Steve Riley, hiked in the road area Tuesday 10-16-18. The road was still quite wet from the recent rains with the river flowing over parts of the road. The river flow area was too deep and rapid to attempt to hike across. Trees and brush washing in from the dam release earlier this year was “not as bad as we anticipated”. Most of the brush can be moved by hand with a minimum of chain sawing compared to our cleaning before the flooding by the dam water release. John has been in touch with (the parties involved), La Paz county, AZ Game and Fish, US Fish and Wildlife, AZ Peace Trail, and the BLM. Everything looks fine with no anticipated major roadblocks. We (our club) also have an offer from FMCA 4 Wheelers of $7500 to help pay for fencing materials. As soon as the area dries out and we make another scouting hike—we will set up dates for our club to start our cleaning and fencing projects. La Paz County will also start from the Mineral Wash end of the trail with a bulldozer. The project will not be a “quickly done” project with so many parties involved and Mother Nature with a “trump card”. Our club can be proud of the effort we have contributed so far. We have been told by several of the players, ”that without the Havasu 4 Wheelers this project would have been impossible”. The ultimate goal is to have a win/win result for the off highway users and the wildlife refuge enthusiasts.

Goat Hill Oct 8, 2018

Shortly after starting this run, the first challenge is the sand hills which the club members and the prospective members did a great job getting up and over. Next while traveling the trail along the wilderness area we came upon a new wash out area that was just too dangerous to cross and fortunately we were able to find a by-pass route. It was a great run and also a sad moment……Donna Warren was riding as passage in her former jeep now owned by Loretta Longley. We will miss Donna’s smiling face and upbeat personality on the jeep run but wish her the best of luck in her new adventures. A big Thank You to Scott Bare for being tail gunner.

Planet Mine Oct 12, 2018

Since we were a small group we made a little detour on the way to the trail…….took Planet Ranch Rd off Hwy 95 to check out the status of the area after the Alamo Dam release. Parker apparently got more rain than Havasu as the road had multiple washouts and a lot bumpier than usual. We found there is a big tree right over the gate area and some debris also but the trail looked clear as far as we walked. We did the very scenic small slot canyon and then headed down Mineral Wash for lunch and to see the present status of the river since the water release. It was amazing how much vegetation has grown up since this spring……plants almost 5ft tall where there used to be just sand. The river is just a short distance from the barriers and if the road is ever opened it would probably require driving thru the river. We completed the rest of the run which includes the mines that still has rails for the ore carts and the small shack and a variety of ups and down. A big Thank you to Steve Edwards for being tail gunner. Willie Williams, trail boss

High Line Oct 17, 2018

Near the beginning of the run are some hills to climb which seemed to be no problem for the group but locating the down-hill trail was a different story. Of the 8 jeeps, 4 made it the correct way and 4 tried another route and required some redirections. No problem as they didn’t wonder that far away…..gave us something to talk about. After going by the remains of the house we noticed some new grading apparently for the “desert bar” that is supposed to go into that area. After doing U Go Falls we decided to check out the new graded road and found it came out almost at the intersection of Havasu Heights Rd and Hwy 95. It totally bypasses the ridge trail that takes you into Havasu Heights, which the residence will probably appreciate. A big Thank You to Cynde Choate for doing a great job as tail gunner.

HAVASU 4 WHEELERS, PROUD MEMBERS

RATING DESCRIPTION

1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.

2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.

3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.

3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

- Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.

5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
