Olive Langhorn was born in Lake District England, to parents Annie and Richard Jackson. She spent much of her life there until relocating to the East Coast in the United States in 1968. She remained on the East Coast until relocating to Tacoma Washington in 2016. Although she cherishes her memories, and family in her country, she says she loves the United States and is very happy about her decision to move here. Olive very much enjoys gardening and actually has a green thumb! She also loves to cook which is something she’s extremely good at. She’s considered a social butterfly and gets a kick out of social gatherings with friends. Olive is a member of an International organization called The Red Hat Society. She enjoys many outings and special events with the group. Olive became a member of Lighthouse Senior Center shortly after moving to Tacoma in 2016. She has met many friends which she considers to be family. She became a volunteer at the center shortly after establishing membership. She gives limitless hours and energy to the center daily and has become the go-to person here at Lighthouse. She’s extremely resourceful and never hesitates to take on a task when asked. She’s very passionate about volunteering and totally has a heart for it. Olive has been nominated as the top volunteer for two years in a row and everyone here at Lighthouse appreciates her commitment. We honestly don’t know what we would do without this amazing, feisty, funny, intelligent, resourceful, energetic, and beautiful lady. We all love and adore her immensely! Olive would like to extend a warm thank you to her fellow members at Lighthouse for honoring her as the top volunteer for the last two years. She is greatly appreciative and honored to have been selected. We absolutely love and adore you, Olive!!

Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by George Washington after a request by Congress. Thomas Jefferson chose not to observe the holiday, and its celebration was intermittent until the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, when Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in 1863, during the American Civil War. Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the date was changed between 1939 and 1941 amid significant controversy. From 1942 onwards, Thanksgiving has been proclaimed by Congress as being on the fourth Thursday in November. Thanksgiving is regarded as being the beginning of the fall–winter holiday season, along with Christmas and the New Year, in American culture.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and as accounted by attendee Edward Winslow it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings" days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

Ingredients: · 3/4 cup packed brown sugar · 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon · 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg · 2 small acorn squash, halved and seeded · 3/4 cup raisins · 4 tablespoons butter · 1/2 cup water

Spiced Acorn Squash

Directions: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg; spoon into squash halves. Sprinkle with raisins. Top each with 1 tablespoon butter. Wrap each half individually in heavy-duty foil, sealing tightly.
