Welcome to the November Link

Remembrance is very much on our minds at this time of year - a time for looking both backwards and forwards. Do please join us at Four Elms at 10:50am for our annual Benefice Service of Remembrance – or at Hever, where there will be a simple, short service around the War Memorial. These present an important opportunity to pray for peace and reconciliation in our increasingly fragile world.

Then, later this month I shall be saying “au revoir” as my service as your Priest-in-charge for these past 3 years comes to an end. This has been both a privilege and a joy – and goodness, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun? The time has passed incredibly quickly, and as I prepare for ‘retirement’, it is very tempting to wonder how I will fill my time. Inevitably, there is an endless list of good and pressing ideas. Nevertheless, St Paul in his letter to Titus has this to say, by way of guidance “teach the older women to show their reverence for God by their behaviour. They are not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of goodness.” – that lets the men off the hook and puts me in my place!

As I reflect, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude – and so many have followed this path with me and have supported, taught, guided and indeed challenged me along the way. For me, remembrance will be that combination of giving thanks for the past and looking forward to a more leisurely pace of life.

Of course, being a Christian and serving Christ never stops, and Isaiah captures God’s promise for the future “It is I who have created, and I who will carry, and it is I who will bear and save.” Life indeed moves us on to new experiences – for me and for everyone in the Benefice. I know how much my successor (when appointed) will value all you have to offer – that is what makes you so special! God speed and God bless!

Reverend Wendy Izod

Village Screen Film Club

The 2019/20 film season begins in November at the usual venue, Hever Castle Golf Club. Please note that the dates don’t follow the usual pattern of the second Friday in the month. Our films will be:Friday 1 NovemberPaddington 2 We thought we were showing it last March but ended up with Paddington 1 by mistake. This time it really, really will be Paddington 2. Much loved by all ages, it features the voices of Hughs Grant and Bonneville with Ben Whishaw as that bear. Friday 10 JanuaryThe Wife Glenn Close won a Golden Globe for her role as a supportive wife who begins to question her life choices when she travels to Stockholm with her narcissistic husband (Jonathan Pryce) who is about to receive the Nobel prize for literature.

Friday 7 February Letter to Brezhnev This is an excellent romantic comedy about two Liverpool girls in the late eighties who fall for two Russian sailors and try to contact them after they disappear back into the Soviet Union. Friday 6 MarchFinding your feetWhen “Lady” Sandra Abbott discovers that her husband of 40 years is having an affair with her best friend, she seeks refuge in London with her estranged, older sister Bif. The two could not be more different - Sandra is a fish out of water next to her outspoken, serial dating, free-spirited sibling. But different is just what Sandra needs at the moment, and she reluctantly lets Bif drag her along to a community dance class, where she starts finding her feet. Imelda Staunton, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley star.

The films (all less than two hours long) start at 8pm and doors open at 7pm for the pre-show meal and bar - with ice cream and popcorn in the interval.Tickets are a suggested donation of £3 for the film or £12 to include the meal. You can book with Bridget Harris on 01732 700986 or [email protected] or buy tickets at the door. However please pre-book your meal by the Wednesday morning before the show if you would like to eat.

It was another successful show with more than 45 scarecrows popping up all over the place on every theme imaginable. The winner of the public

vote was Jane Higgs’s Free Range Egg, here she is receiving the cup from HRA Chair John Adkins at the scarecrow party.

The committee prize went to Peter and Chrissie Stevens at Delaware for their cyclist.

Runners up were the Cust Minions on Uckfield Lane and the Roberts’ artist at Markbeech church, seen here getting a little help with his picture.

The school lollipop lady won the school prize for Year 2.

Roy Tullet 1936 – 2019Roy was once a very familiar sight around Hever, he loved nothing better than to stroll along the lanes and watch everything that was going on.

He grew up in Pigdown Lane with his parents Daisy and Alf. Alf worked for the castle as did Roy’s grandfather. From his parents he gained a love of gardening which lead to his enrolment as a trainee with Spadework, a charity which provides training and work experience for people with learning disabilities.

Roy spent many happy years with Spadework, much encouraged by his good friendship with Geoff and Norma Dalton. Following the passing of his father and the increasing fragility of his mother, he moved into Ash

Close in Edenbridge in the care of Mencap. A few years later, when he was 70, he moved into his own home, which greatly pleased him. During his years in Edenbridge he became a member of the congregation of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, from which he derived great pleasure and loving support.

He greatly enjoyed coming back to Hever and was a frequent visitor to Hever Castle where he was always greeted with respect and kindness. Roy was a gregarious, happy man, with a fine sense of humour and a great love of life. As a family we shall miss him very much, he enriched our lives and we were fortunate to know him.

Wendy Izod

– a profile

Wendy Izod retires at the end of November. She has been a constant and energetic presence in the area for decades. As a non-stipendiary priest she supported four incumbents and carried the mantle alone for the last three years as priest in charge.

Wendy hails originally from Padgate near Warrington where her father was at RAF Padgate. The family moved south to High Wycombe when she was 11. Reaching the end of Grammar School, she remembers discussing careers with her father, who recommended what we now call ‘HR’. How right he was. Wendy wrote to Mars Ltd, a big employer in Slough, who agreed to take her on if she got a degree. So, off to Sheffield University she went, where she studied politics under the famous left–wing Professor, Sir Bernard Crick. The mid 60s were exciting times, there were noticeably fewer women students than men but she never felt a victim of discrimination, rather she was happy about the opportunities which were opening up.

At Mars part of the training was to work shifts on the production line making Maltesers. She progressed to line supervisor and, to finish off her factory training, was assigned to “special packs” (five for the price of four). Unfortunately, in a race to get the largest weight of chocolate into the delivery area her forklift driver Ron’s equipment tangled in the sprinkler system and drowned the factory, so after that she went off to the desk job.

Page 10: November 2019 - Hever Parish Councilhever.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Link-Nov-2019-web.pdfNovember 2019 In this issue: • Remembering Roy ullet and David Skinner • Bidding adieu

Then came Black & Decker in Maidenhead where her role was “Personnel officer for women” and she was accommodated in a glass office, known of course as “the Wendy House”. In those pre-‘Made in Dagenham’ days men and women were paid differently (guess who got paid less?) and very often worked in segregated roles. In Black & Decker women tended to work only on domestic appliances.

Subsequently, in the mid 1970s Wendy worked in HR for companies in different industries - Lyons Bakeries at the famous Cadby Hall and the Construction Industry Training Board in Croydon. This was at the time when the Equal Pay Act became law along with the Sex Discrimination Act and the right not to be unfairly dismissed.

These were times which also saw the emergence of the unions and of women into senior roles - she recalls that the leader of the change to decimalisation in the construction industry was a woman. Gradually a greater sense of fairness emerged in the workplace.

Wendy met her husband Andrew in London. He was, and still is, a member of the Honourable Artillery Company, and he wooed her at the Flank Companies’ Ball, (a big summer event in the City). They married in October 1973 and the HAC has remained a big part of their lives. After active service, Andrew became a member of the Company of Pikemen and Musketeers (the Lord

Mayor of London’s ceremonial body guard) for 36 years. This afforded Wendy the opportunity rejoice in the title ‘The Reverend Mistress’ - surely a contradiction in terms? For 5 years when Andrew was Adjutant of the Company of Pikemen and Mustketeers, Wendy met the Queen several times.

When her first daughter, Caroline, was born on 3 December 1978, there was no maternity pay or right to return, but Wendy, who was by now working for HCIMA, the examining body for professional managers in the hotel industry, was back at work part time in January 1979!

A few years after marrying, she and Andrew moved to Chittenden Cottages in Four Elms and they have been in the neighbourhood ever since. Their other daughter Elizabeth was born in Chittenden and despite two children and a commute Wendy went back to full time work whilst Andrew set up a calligraphy business. The family moved to their present home on Stick Hill in 1985.

Wendy became actively engaged in the church at Four Elms after Caroline was born and she began to see a greater purpose in the world. Jack Kemp, then Vicar of Four Elms (it was not yet the Benefice we know today) baptised Caroline and Derek Chapman (Rector of Hever and Markbeech and priest in charge of Four Elms) prepared Wendy for confirmation in Rochester Cathedral. This was the first step in the process

Page 11: November 2019 - Hever Parish Councilhever.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Link-Nov-2019-web.pdfNovember 2019 In this issue: • Remembering Roy ullet and David Skinner • Bidding adieu

9

that led eventually to her ordination as Priest. Not long afterwards Wendy started working on the Four Elms parish magazine (Hever and Markbeech’s was separate). It was typed on her kitchen table on a cyclostyle stencil, Andrew then took it to Alan Smith of Topfoto to run it off. She remembers their joy at the delivery of a long-armed stapler to this day. The village magazines then joined together and became the Link not long after Brian Simmonds became Rector of the newly-formed United Benefice in 1993, and after about 14 years Wendy passed the editorship to Mark Mead.

Eventually, Croydon beckoned again and Wendy moved into the financial services sector in 1991. She was already a churchwarden with Carl Grannum and working full time when she started to train as a lay reader. She was licensed in 1994 and well remembers her terror at her first sermon and how Carl said “look at me and I will smile at you” and that got her through this first nerve-wracking experience.

Before long Wendy trained part time for the ministry over three years and was ordained Deacon in 2001. These were relatively early days for women priests, who had been ordained only from 1998. She became a non-stipendiary priest in June 2002. She was a proud part of the tradition of “worker priests” with a ministry at work as well as in the Benefice. The right stipendiary job never came up and she remembers (mostly fondly) being part of a ministry team working with a succession of Rectors making plans for the Benefice - for example, Malcolm Gribble who initiated

Cafe Church. Canon Derek Blows, a retired priest, was both an example and an inspiration, someone who Wendy says was the closest to a saint she has ever met.

Wendy retired in 2008 but ran her own consultancy until 2016 when she was asked to be our priest in charge on a part-time basis. She says that it was a busy period trying to fit in all the demands on her time, as well as keeping up with constant training requirements.

And what will we do without her? Wendy has been busy not only with her ministry but also with various ex-officio roles including President of the Horticultural Society, opening the Four Elms Fete and as a Hever school governor to name but a few. She and Andrew are not moving away but she will nonetheless be greatly missed as our worker, or probably over-worker, priest.

It’s a year since the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a special report on the impact of global warming of 1.5oC above pre-industrial levels. Six months since the independent Committee on Climate Change made their recommendations on how the UK could achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. And a little over four months since the Government embraced those findings, becoming the first major economy in the world to legislate to end its contribution to global warming by 2050.

More than half of councils have responded by declaring a climate emergency. But to what effect, you may ask. How will that affect either climate change or indeed me? These are legitimate questions and ones which we’re trying to answer in a practical manner at Sevenoaks District Council. It is only right that Sevenoaks plays its part fully and enthusiastically both in terms of those areas within our direct control, as well as those over which we have influence. That’s why at the next meeting of the whole Council this month, we’ll be considering how we plan for our zero carbon future, as an organisation and as a District.

These things are nuanced and complex. We want more than warm words. And to do this justice we must avoid over simplification – history is sadly littered with well-intentioned environmental interventions which have proved to have catastrophic effects. We are keen to avoid such mistakes

and develop a meaningful plan to rise to the challenge. In preparing, we have looked at some of the first steps we’ve taken in recent years to improve our environmental footprint: moving away from landfill; replacing diesel vehicles with electric; beginning an ambitious charging point rollout; introducing environmental standards in planning policies; moving our offices to LED lighting, to name a few.

There is, though, a great deal more to do. So I will be encouraging my colleagues to consider not just the little things – the importance of which should not be underestimated – but to think big too, like how to stimulate investment in our District. We already enjoy a highly skilled, knowledgeable workforce, unparalleled connections, and a considerable amount of City nous. Let’s try to tap this talent, marrying it with the opportunities green tech provides.

To that end, if there’s an idea – big or small – you feel we ought to consider in our bid for net-zero, or which might improve our environmental footprint, then do please drop me a line. The meeting is not until the middle of the month but it represents the start of important work, not an end point. So, as I say, do not be shy in getting in touch!

And they want to ring-fence land for a third runway.

Ride and stride by Helen Rahn

The date for the annual Ride and Stride for Kent Churches comes round once again, a chance to raise funds for your church, in our case St Paul’s Four Elms.

This year David and I decided to walk somewhere different and headed for Goudhurst where the spectacular St Mary’s church sits in a commanding position at the brow of the hill.

Inside the lofty church refreshments were waiting and we enjoyed taking in the beauty of the building. We headed down the hill (which means you always have to come up again) towards Horsmonden. St Margaret’s is almost a mile out of the village and accompanied by wedding bells had the sponsor form signed in the beautifully adorned porch. We walked through the village and discovered the edge of the “Garden of England”, rows of fragrant hops, beside vines not quite ready to be harvested, and I have never seen so many laden apple trees. We walked around 8 miles although we only visited two churches.

Thanks to all those who generously sponsored us we raised £200. Thanks also to my mum Margaret Bates and Peter for organising the muffins, drinks and sponsors and of course to those who sat all day to greet the visitors. It is always great to have a welcoming face at the churches.

news from Hever

news from Four Elms

As Hever students approach half term, Elm Class has enjoyed ‘working’ as palaeontologists by researching different types of fossils, finding out how they are made and applying their knowledge to create their own! Willow class has been enquiring into ‘Global Discoveries’ and tracking places they have visited alongside sharing recipes they have tried around the world. They have enjoyed some amazing favourite recipes and shared their cooking with the community. Their fabulous finish to the topic included a trip to Bore Place Farm for a ‘Field to Fork’ experience and exploration of cookery and organic, sustainable farming.

During our reflective Harvest Festival the children focused on and presented The Parable of the Mustard Seed, one of the most memorable and profound stories that Jesus told his followers. Some of our students learnt a Spanish Autumn song for the Harvest Festival that has never been performed before and also celebrated the European Day for Languages with a Spanish Break, serving chocolate caliente and madalenas!

Oak Class is enjoying Year 6 responsibilities and they have welcomed their year R buddies beautifully. They are enjoying reading with the Reception children and escorting them to Forest School and helping the children transition into ‘forest learning.’

We are really excited to be implementing ‘The Write Stuff’ programme in English

and Oak Class has responded brilliantly with some great use of imagery and literary features for effect.

“It was peaceful, eerily peaceful, as we skimmed across the choppy waves surrounded by the deep, deep, life-taking sea. Waves banging, banging and crashing on the distant beach we had left only moments before.”

“Down below, in the musty cabins was a map: ancient, torn, well-used.”(Created by Hever Primary School’s Head girl)

The children have experienced a fantastic First Half Term in school!

Walk and talkRegular readers of this column may remember our feature on Wake Up Shake Up last year. The school now has a new initiative called ‘Walk and Talk’ aimed at combining light exercise and talking about thoughts, concerns and ideas with friends. It’s an opportunity for children to share any feelings before the school day and get some fresh air.

Jog-a-thonAs well as our Daily Mile initiative, the children all took part in a Jog-a-thon to fundraise for the PTA. The children were tasked with walking, jogging or running as many laps of the playground as possible with parents and staff cheering them on. There were prizes in each year group for the most number of laps completed. The

money raised will help the PTA to fund activities such as the Christmas party and panto.

Spooky fun and gamesAt the end of term, we are holding a Halloween disco for all children, with fancy dress, music, drinks, snacks, fun, games and spooky glitter tattoos.

Bonfire paradeWork has started on our float for the Edenbridge Bonfire Night parade. We held a mufti day to raise funds for the float materials, including mounds of papiermache and paint!

Sporting newsWe have a new club at school: tag rugby. The children have been learning the basics and are progressing really well, putting in lots of effort until the final whistle.

The cross country team took part in the first race of the season. There were 31 schools competing and 100+ children in each race. There was a spectacular debut by one of our year 3 new girls, who was the FIRST Y3 GIRL across the line. And if that wasn’t enough, one of our year 5 girls was also FIRST in the Y5 GIRL category.

Congratulations to those two absolute superstars! Despite the small size of our school, we have a wealth of cross country talent with top 10 performances from 3 other runners. Even our newbies held their own and were not daunted by competing in their very first race.

news from the pews

Four ElmsSettling back into the autumn days with shorter daylight is always spoken of in terms of “days are getting shorter” with a little disquiet. But how beautiful St. Paul’s Church looked with the abundance of “all good gifts” following the Four Elms Primary School Harvest Festival Service and the Sunday Harvest Service. These generous gifts are passed, in the main, to the Food Bank in Edenbridge along with small boxes given to local people. We welcomed warmly Els, Evan and Logan Francis to our Church family following their baptism. The Family Harvest Supper was a happy evening, filling the Village Hall with local friends and neighbours enjoying eating together and being entertained by the duo “Goldfield”.

We now look towards Remembrance Sunday, where our usual short service with two minute silence will be held at the Four Elms War Memorial at 10.50am followed by a Service inside St. Paul’s church.

At the end of November we say adieu to Wendy with her final Eucharist Service in the Benefice on Sunday 24th November here in St. Paul’s church .

Since the burglary at St. Paul’s I have had many kind comments and one was especially well received from Mrs Anne Allen, Churchwarden for many years, she has written a short piece for the Link. On a personal note, I thank everyone who has given me support during my first six months as Churchwarden. I think it would have been chaotic without such

help. My six month feedback, a bit more challenging than I expected.

Hever Please come to the November Parish lunch on 21 November at 12 for 12.30 in Hever Village Hall. You will be very welcome.

An impressive quantity of food was collected at the harvest festival and it will be delivered to a local food bank. The school decorated the church beautifully, thanks to all. Now we come to Remembrance Sunday on 10 November - Hever will have a short service round the War Memorial at 10.50. We are thinking ahead to next year which marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2 (for your information the May Bank Holiday is on 8 and not 2 May).

Wendy’s leaving service is on 30th November. It is a 4pm evensong and all are welcome and we hope to do her proud. Please let us know if you would like to come to the celebration in the school afterwards.

Looking ahead, the Carol Supper is on Friday 20 December after the Nine Lessons and Carols Service and we will be advertising all our usual services in the next edition.

Markbeech Wind and rain has set in this October, bringing the summer to an abrupt end, setting a mood fit for the two sad farewells in Markbeech this month. Two long lives well lived, first David Skinner’s

funeral beautifully reflected his life on the land, the church full of his family, the village and the local farmers. And then today’s memorial celebration for Cecil Paynter painted a vivid picture of the kind, mischievous vintner and story teller.

I heard more than one person afterwards describing him as a ‘real gentleman’ which indeed he was. He looked after Holy Trinity for 25 years as churchwarden, and contributed hugely to life here. We pray for Fiona and the family and feel, with them, a large hole in our lives.

Harvest was a happy time, a lovely Festival service with the children leading us in singing and a very good Harvest supper, with long tables beautifully decorated by Clare Denison-Pender, Normandy pork from Nicki and me, and the very best mashed potatoes prepared by Andrea Brocklehurst. A whole table of delicious desserts kept the Markbeech pudding tradition alive and we were serenaded by Ruth Seger. Thank you so much to all who were involved and for those puddings!

Coming up we have the Family Service on November 17th at 9.15am and the village lunch for November is on Tuesday 26th, 12.30pm at Markbeech village hall. Please email me at [email protected] or ring or text 07860 436668, if you can come and let me know any dietary requirements as I am making the soup this month! Young and old, you are all very welcome.

Finally, at the end of the month we will be very reluctantly saying thank you and adieu to Wendy. She has done a wonderful job as rector and we will all miss her. We send her on to the next chapter of her life with prayers and love and thanks.

– an appreciation by his son Philip

David Allen Skinner was born 22nd Sept 1931 at the Wee Hoose, Partridge Green near Horsham. Shortly afterwards the family moved and Lesley, David’s father joined his father working at Park Farm in Limpsfield.

Lesley was a member of the Home Guard. In the early part of the war when the Home Guard was formed there was one gun for the whole troop which the person on duty that day or night held. It was Dad’s job to cycle into Oxted to collect the gun from the previous member and once he had to cycle home in an air raid. There were so few cars on the road during the war that David and the local children would play golf up Limpsfield High Street.

At that time Park Farm was on Bluehouse Lane and the au pair girls would bring the children to see the milking and the girls would chat to David. That’s how David met Ellie, my mother. In 1956 Dad decided he wanted to see more of the world and took a job as a field officer in the veterinary department overseeing the vaccination and dipping of cattle in Tanganyika (now Tanzania). Dad proposed to Ellie by post and she travelled out to Tanzania in 1957 aged 20 to marry him. After his first one year tour he stayed out and worked at the Mt Kilimanjaro trekking centre and climbed Mt Kilimanjaro. I was born in Mawanza on the shores of Lake Victoria in 1960.

David had considered farming in Tanzania but after independence it became clear that was not an option. Old Park Farm was earmarked for redevelopment into housing and a new green field Park Farm was to be built up Water Lane. David returned to England in 1962 to take on the challenge of running a modern farm. The first winter living in the barely heated Old Park Farm was a shock after life in Tanzania.

In 1973 David took on the tenancy of Broomlands Farm, Limpsfield and in 1974 a new 120 cow cubicle house and herringbone parlour was constructed with a 750 gallon bulk tank which was very large for its time.

David and Ellie enjoyed beagling and would go out

on a Saturday morning if the hunt was local. David was a lifelong supporter of the Oxted and Edenbridge show serving as chairman and president. In March1982 land at Buckhurst farm Markbeech was purchased. Half arable and half grass. In 1992 David started construction of a house at Buckhurst Farm and they moved from Broomlands Farm in ‘93. David and Ellie were able to enjoy some holidays with their farming friends. In 2007 they returned to Tanzania on holiday.

Mum died in March 2015. Dad stayed at home with the help of very good carers but in January 2017 had to move to Windmill Manor in Hurst Green. Right to the end he was very active. Dad died peacefully in Windmill Manor.

Jo Cockerill Senior Partner at St. James’s Place Wealth Management

Many of you will recognise me as the lady who rides horses round the Hever and Chiddingstone area. When I first moved to Hever from Westerham in 2007 my black Labrador Jet came riding with me and led the way always on the correct side of the road. Sadly he died last summer aged 15 1/2 – the other 2 dogs Chablis blonde and Guinness black are known locally to walk themselves and I thank everybody who keeps an eye out for them when the Labradors go off on an adventure.

As you know I have several horses and these need exercising on average 5 times a week and generally I ride before work. We have only 2 bridle paths around Hever and Chiddingstone so I have to ride on the roads and I try to help the school run and the commuters pass us as soon as possible bearing in mind the bends and I thank for your patience.

We usually ride for an hour, at weekends longer rides with a stop at a local hostelry to support the local businesses are in keeping. I would love to see some off road riding being opened up around Hever – maybe we can see if this is possible.

I was brought up in Oxted, where my father was a GP. I went to Guys Hospital

to train as a Nurse and joined the Financial Services industry in London’s West End in 1988. I joined St. James’s Place in 1995 and look after my lovely clients’ financial well-being now instead of their health. I find that financial worries can be as troublesome as health worries, so my bedside manner comes into play in my meetings.

After I have ridden I usually go to the office in Westerham or go to meetings with my clients – generally I meet them at their homes or places of work and just prepare for meetings at the Westerham offices.

My other interests involve gardening and I would like to have my garden in the National Gardens Scheme in the near future.

My vegetable patch has had a bad year but I remain inspired to beat the weeds next year – I have had a lot of soft fruit so they are filling the freezer ready to be made into puddings and cakes as cooking is another pleasure of mine. I also sing in the local Church choirs and would love to see greater attendance at the services.

I am an avid theatre and cinema visitor preferring matinees so I can get home to put the chickens to bed before the predatory fox pays a visit.

If you would like to stroke a pony please do approach me – on 07932 141951

Memories of Four Elms churchBy Anne AllenAnne Allen was brought up in Four Elms and farmed at Whistlers with her husband before retiring to Cornwall some years ago. Anne continues to take the Link and when she heard about the burglary she wrote this to Christina Hodson.

“1937 As a child I can remember the excitement when electricity came to the church. There was a celebration cake and cup of tea. And on the Sunday we sang the hymn with the line “Let there be light”. Originally the lamps were oil lamps, six in the nave, three down each side, evenly spaced. Someone whose name I don’t remember was going to Africa and taking them with her to a small church which had nothing. They were so grateful.

Somewhere in the 50s the remaining two in the Chancel were converted with the candle in the middle. It was decided to use them on Feast days. I wonder if you still do. While thinking of the Chancel and the beautiful Carrara reredos, do you realise that the Christ child’s hand is pointing to the cross? The light from the altar candle shows it up.

During the blitz the south transept window was destroyed by blast. Amongst all the sadness a very holy man said “but now we can see out and it reminds us not just to be a holy huddle shut in the church”. As a late teenager I remember disagreeing with him. Now of course he was quite right! But the St Paul’s window was so lovely, a lot of red in the stained glass. So when the carpet was replaced in the nave, red was chosen.

1977 I’m pretty sure it was 1977, possibly ‘78 when the last burglary took place. A small child was lifted through the quarter light in the St George window. He climbed down and left the church via the vestry door. The police traced how the men had gone over the fence into the meadow (where the fete happens) into the pub car park. They got good tyre marks but they were never caught. They know they were Irish because they left a silver coin on the altar - some Irish saying about silver for silver. So they had a conscience. Because we had photos of everything and the original silversmith still existed, he copied replicas for us. I never thought that the big vases looked right somehow.

So much about the church is interesting. The mosaics by Letherby are priceless......”

Church House, Edenbridge

The Eden Valley Museum, in the heart of Edenbridge, is housed in a medieval farm house once known as Doggett’s Farm and now called Church House. In 2020 the Eden Valley Museum will be launching an exhibition to celebrate its 20th birthday. We are looking for information about the past history of Church House.

We are particularly interested in any personal memories from its various uses in the 20th century. We believe at one time it housed a dentist. Do you

have any memories of going to that?We believe a youth club was held here. Did you go to it?It was also used as a private house. Do you know of anyone who lived here? Do you know of any other uses it was put to?If you have any memories, anecdotes or even photographs we would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Please contact Claire Donithorn at [email protected]. from How Green Nursery Another month rolls over and we suddenly find ourselves in November - this year has flown by! The clocks have gone back and there’s a real feel of Autumn in the air.

November can be a very busy month at the nursery. We’re still potting up thousands of perennials, grasses, alpines, garden pinks and herbs. We use this month to clean our glass houses and tunnels to rid of dirt and algae thus increasing light levels to the stock inside.

Good husbandry is essential in a commercial set-up but can also be useful practice at home. If you have a greenhouse at home use this time of year to clean the glass inside and out. Also, if there are any panes of glass cracked or broken it’s essential to replace to help retain heat. A cheap and cost-effective way of retaining heat throughout the winter months is to use bubble wrap on the inside of the glasshouse.

As your copy of the Link drops through the letterbox we may have left the EU?!! Without getting political, it will certainly create some headaches throughout the horticultural industry in the UK. Importing plants will become very time consuming with increased paperwork & red-tape and ultimately more expensive. Here at How Green we are growers but are reliant on imported plugs & liners with plants that have a PBR (Plant breeders rights).

Duty on sundries such as pots and soil will increase prices and a further expected fall in sterling will not help.

On a positive note biosecurity will be tightened by DEFRA to help prevent nasties from coming in from abroad. We are adhering to strict plant passporting controls to give our customers the confidence we are offering healthy plants. As from 14th December all plants leaving the nursery will have a sticker stating the provenance for traceability.

We also have an exciting event to tell you about! Our first Winter Lecture of the season is a showing of the film ‘Five Seasons’, the gardens of Piet Oudolf, a Dutch garden designer. He is seen as one of the most influential designers of the modern age. His style is very much based around block planting of herbaceous perennials and grasses in dramatic swathes. Examples of his work include The High Line in New York and the Hauser and Wirth garden in Somerset.

The event will be on Wednesday 27th November at the Hever Golf Club and the film starts at 8pm. Tickets are £8.50 and strictly in advance (no availability on the door). A link can be found on our website to book your place. www.howgreennursery.co.ukSimon Sutcliffe01732 700382 | [email protected]
