Cuddle Corner at Discover Dogs

Over 30,000 people attended the two-day event in October at ExCeL London to find the right breed for their lifestyle.

Visitors were able to meet more than 200 breeds of dog, watch clever canine demonstrations and displays,

and shop for products at hundreds of trade stands, as well as get advice on buying a dog responsibly from a reputable breeder, such as a Kennel Club Assured Breeder.

Discover Dogs another great successContinued from front page

Vanessa McAlpine, Education and Events Executive at the Kennel Club, said: “This year’s show was fantastic – from the hundreds of breed booths and experts, to the exciting displays, trade stands and demonstrations. We would like to thank our

fantastic breed booth and breed rescue volunteers, trade stand exhibitors, ring party, commentators, judges, competitors, sponsors and everyone else who made the event such a success.”

Competitions which took place at Discover Dogs included the ABC Agility

semi-finals for medium dogs and large novice dogs, the agility Small/Mixi Pairs finals and the agility Starters Cup finals. The event also saw the Junior Warrant of the Year semi-finals and the UK Junior Handler of the Year final.

VIPs and celebrities were out in force to support

the event with special appearances including dog-lover and YouTuber, Phil Lester, Finn the Police Dog and his handler Police Constable Dave Wardell who championed #FinnsLaw and won the Kennel Club Friends for Life competition 2019, and TV personality, Pete Wicks.

BREED RESCUE CALENDAR

GOES ON SALE

The calendar’s cover star, Tyler the Rough Collie, was rehomed from Collie Rescue (Rough and Smooth) at just four months old by Pauline and Steve Bradbury and wins £100 for her rehoming centre, Collie Rescue (Rough and Smooth), while the other dogs that feature in the calendar each win £50 for their respective welfare organisations. Donations are made by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.

It is hoped that the dogs included in the 2020 calendar will help raise awareness about the many issues rescue organisations face and the reasons why dogs can end up in rescue.

The money raised through the sale of the calendars will enable the Kennel Club Charitable Trust to continue to make a difference for dogs in 2020, by funding a wide variety of work ranging from research into canine diseases, supporting dog welfare organisations and training support dogs – all of which give dogs and their owners a healthier, happier life.

The calendar is on sale for £5 through the Kennel Club online shop at bit.ly/32eK2XM.

The Kennel Club Breed Rescue calendar for 2020 is now available and features 12 amazing stories of dogs that have overcome the odds and are now settled into their new homes. The calendar will raise funds for the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, one of the largest charities dedicated to dog health and welfare in the UK, and is the perfect present for any dog lover at Christmas.

Kennel Club Holidays offer dog-friendly cottages

With around nine million dogs in the UK, and one in four households owning a dog, the great British public are always on the lookout for places where their four-legged family members are also welcome. The Kennel Club has announced a new partnership with cottages.com and Hoseasons, both of which welcome millions of guests and their canine companions each year, to provide a platform for booking dog-friendly holiday accommodation, ranging from holiday properties and lodges to canal boats and cruisers.

GB High Hopes agility team wins bronze medal

The GB High Hopes team has won an overall bronze medal in the Large team competition at the

FCI Agility World Championships, after competing against 33 other teams.

Held in Turku in Finland, the World Championships saw hundreds of handlers and dogs take part from 41 countries. GB High Hopes travelled with the Agility Team GB squad from the UK to Finland to take part in the championships.

The team comprised team captain Natasha Wise with Pebbles, Dan Shaw with Geek, Dave Munnings with Fame, and Naarah Cuddy with Lemon. All four dogs are Border Collies.

After close competition, Team GB were also awarded fourth overall place in the Small dogs, with Lauren Langman with Cocker Spaniel, Blink, placing 15th in jumping and 11th in

agility. Lauren and Blink narrowly missed out on an overall bronze medal by one hundredth of a second.

Other highlights over the weekend included Euan Paterson with Border Collie, Crazee, winning first place in the Large agility round, beating 130 other agility handlers. This is the first year Euan and Crazee have competed in Team GB.

Agility Team GB is supported by the Kennel Club, Natural Instinct and Nottingham Trent University.

The 2020 FCI Agility World Championships will be held in Tallinn, Estonia from September 10-13. The European Open Agility Championships 2020 will take place from July 30 - August 2 at the Rutland Showground in the UK.

The Kennel Club Junior Warrant Winner of the Year competition semi-finals took place at London’s biggest dog event, Discover Dogs at ExCeL London, with 61 top young dogs competing for just ten places in the final, which will be held at Crufts 2020.

The Kennel Club Charitable Trust (KCCT) provides grants to various canine organisations nationwide, many of which are involved in the rescue and welfare of dogs. In 2017, the KCCT gave grants totalling nearly £675,000.

This beautiful moorland estate stretches to some 7,550 acres and is absolutely ideal for

walked up trialling and training for Retrievers, Spaniels and HPRs. The estate offers both

Pheasant and Partridge shooting and the varied terrain offers opportunities for all breeds of

Gundog to demonstrate their natural working abilities. Woodland cover provides excellent

hunting for Spaniels whilst the stretching moorland is ideal for challenging retrieves and

The Kennel Club is the largest organisation in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training, whose main objective is to ensure

that dogs live healthy, happy lives with responsible owners. As part of its External Affairs activities, the Kennel Club runs a dog owners group KC Dog which was established to monitor and keep dog owners up to date about dog related issues, such as Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) being introduced across the country and public consultations on animal welfare.

Local authorities in England and Wales can use PSPOs, and in Northern Ireland DCOs to restrict where dog walkers can go with their dog and whether they can let their dogs off lead. For example, these restrictions may specify a particular park (or area within the park) where dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, or ban dogs from a beach for specific times of the year. At present, there are no equivalent powers available to local authorities in Scotland.

As a general principle, we would like to highlight the importance that all PSPOs to be necessary and proportionate responses to problems caused by dogs and irresponsible owners. It is also important that authorities balance the interests of dog owners with the interests of other access users.For more information please visit www.kcdog.org.ukT

THESE CONSULTATIONS ARE CURRENTLY OPEN FOR RESPONSES...

CORNWALL COUNTY COUNCILThe council currently has 48 Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) which apply seasonal restrictions for dogs on beaches. Those orders are set to expire in 2020 and so the council is undertaking public consultation before it draws up the new PSPOs.

As part of the consultation the council is asking whether the restrictions should be harmonised so they are the same for all beaches in Cornwall. This will add restrictions for a number of beaches, including Seaton beach and Downderry beach.
