NOVEMBER 2019 THE OIL SPOT www.northwestbritishclassics.com PRESIDENT’S NOTE I hope you are enjoying the beautiful autumn in the Inland Northwest. Our big activity for October was a drive led by Jim and Maddy Houghton up to Newport WA where we boarded the Scenic Pend Oreille River Train. See the details and pictures in this issue. Little Billy and his dad were at a British autocross watching England’s finest zipping through the cones. Little Billy looked up to his dad and says, "Dad, when I grow up, I want to own a British car." His Dad looked down at him and said, "You can't do both, son." I want to pass on an update on our BritBull Boss, Bob Flatley. As of press time he is slowly recovering from a painful bout with shingles. He is under doctor’s care and is at home, trying the patience of long suffering wife Maureen. Get well Bob! (Have you all had your shingles shots?) I hope you will take note of the graphic in this issue, reminding you that Name Your Car Day was in October. PRESIDENT’S NOTE I hope you are enjoying the beautiful autumn in the Inland Northwest. Our big activity for October was a drive led by Jim and Maddy Houghton up to Newport WA where we boarded the Scenic Pend Oreille River Train. See the details and pictures in this issue.

Little Billy and his dad were at a British autocross watching England’s finest zipping through the cones. Little Billy looked up to his dad and says, "Dad, when I grow up, I want to own a British car." His Dad looked down at him and said, "You can't do both, son."

I want to pass on an update on our BritBull Boss, Bob Flatley. As of press time he is slowly recovering from a painful bout with shingles. He is under doctor’s care and is at home, trying the patience of long suffering wife Maureen. Get well Bob! (Have you all had your shingles shots?)

I hope you will take note of the graphic in this issue, reminding you that Name Your Car Day was in October. Drive safely out there, and if you drive an LBC, follow the Lucas motto: Get Home Before Dark! --Dave Hofstadter

    NWBC Minutes                                                October 12, 2019

President Dave Hofstadter called the meeting to order at 9:30 in Conley's Restaurant.

The minutes of the September meeting, submitted by Secretary Judy Chapin were approved as written.

The Treasurer's report was distributed and approved as written.  Treasurer Dave Madison and Rebecca have returned from Russia but were absent.

Dave introduced new member Lyn Milligan, owner of a white Jensen.  She recounted her first meeting of her late husband who was driving that very special Jensen.

The club's banquet is to be arranged by Jim Houghton to be held at Darcy's February15th, 2020.

Dave announced that Bob Flatley was absent due to a case of shingles.

Three Britbull t-shirts and several dash plaques, which do not attach to wooden dashes but do stick to refrigerator doors, are available.

Nine people raised their hands to signify they would be driving to Newport today for a train ride on the Scenic Pend Oreille River Train, a nine-mile, 90-minute excursion from Newport to Delkena.  Maps and information for the drive to Newport were distributed.

The brief meeting adjourned at 9:45 so people could depart for Newport and the train depot, as seating for both the open and closed cars is first come, first seated.

Submitted by Judy Chapin, Secretary

NWBC Takes a Drive to Newport WA As possibly the last nice day to take our LBCs on an outing for a while, Jim and Maddy Houghton led a drive up to Newport WA after the Saturday morning club meeting at Conley’s on October 12th. There we boarded the Scenic Pend Oreille River Train and followed an absolutely gorgeous route along the Pend Oreille River. It was about an hour drive up to the Newport Train Depot. The scenic train ride was a 90 minute round trip. The halfway point was the historic town of Dalkena WA, where we were boarded by the Dalkena Wild Bunch Gang. The nefarious robbers demanded tribute from the passengers. We understand the loot went to the charity program of the Newport, Priest River Rotary Club, which runs the train ride and depot. It was fun riding behind a locomotive in authentic converted Pullman cars. Some of us even chose to ride in the open converted livestock cars! After the train ride we all dispersed in several directions to take in more Inland Northwest beauty on drives home. A fun day!

Before storage1. Select a dry, dark location for storage — preferably

with limited access. Concrete flooring is best at keeping away moisture. If you must store your car on a dirt floor, place a plastic barrier under the vehicle, and place carpet pieces or plywood under the tires.

2. Give the vehicle a good wash/wax. Putting on and removing a vehicle cover will lead to unwanted scratches if the car is dirty.

3. Fill the fuel tank (preferably with premium) and add fuel stabilizer. Be sure to run the vehicle to move fuel stabilizer into the carburetor, fuel rails, injectors, etc. The fuller the tank, the less room there will be for air, which carries moisture that can lead to fuel contamination and possibly rust within the tank.

4. Change the oil and filter right before putting away the vehicle. The clean oil will reduce the risk of harmful contaminants working away at your engine during hibernation — and you’ll be ready to go in spring.

5. Check the antifreeze. 6. Add air to the tires. 7. If you're storing your car offsite, some insurance

companies require you to report the address of the offsite location. Check with your insurer to determine your policy's requirements.

When storing1. Place baking soda refrigerator packages in the

interior and trunk areas. 2. To keep insects and vermin out of the car, put a

plastic bag over the air cleaner/air inlet and exhaust pipe(s). You also can cover these with aluminum foil and tape securely. Place mothballs in the tailpipe and around the outside of the car, or insert steel wool in the tailpipe.

3. Place the vehicle on jack stands. This step avoids tire flat spots and adds longevity to the suspension because it is not supporting the vehicle’s weight during storage.

4. For your battery, take one of the following actions: Unhook the battery by removing the negative cable first and store it separately — never on a concrete floor and preferably where it will not freeze; or leave the battery in the car and put a battery tender on it, if there is power available. That way if you want to start it a few times in the winter you don’t have to put the battery in and out.

5. Close all of the windows. 6. If the vehicle will be exposed to freezing

temperatures, be certain no personal items that may freeze or burst are left in the vehicle.

7. There are varying theories about periodically starting the vehicle. This writer feels unless you get the engine up to operating temperature for a good 10-plus minutes to burn off the water vapors that initially develop at startup-cold operation, starting is not a good idea. Anything less will leave water in the combustion chamber and all exhaust
