X4 Wednesday, November 26, 2014 - The Morning Star Black Friday 2014

Morning Star Staff

Black Friday is quickly becoming the bookend opposite Boxing Day for the Canadian holiday shopping season.

Practically unheard of north of the 49th parallel five years ago, Black Friday, which falls the day after American Thanksgiving, is becoming an increasingly popular sales event in the retail sector.

“We’ve been doing it for about four years,” said Andre Blanleil, owner of Andre’s Electronic Experts. “It’s become a very import-

ant day for us. It has kind of boxed in the entire Christmas season.”

Blanleil said Black Friday start-ed in Canada as a way of enticing Canadian shoppers, particularly those living close to the border, to shop local, instead of heading stateside to cash in on deals. However, with the Loonie sitting well below par (currently 0.88 cents), the southern shopping exo-dus likely won’t be as strong come Nov. 28.

That won’t keep Black Friday from continuing as suppliers are

still willing to pass deals along to retail outlets.

“A lot of it is driven by the sup-pliers,” said Blanleil, who operates 16 stores in the Interior, including two in Vernon. “Suppliers come to the table with extra dollars, even better than what we normally pay for stuff. It’s become a strong part of the retail business.”

Blanleil said TVs are usually a hot commodity on Black Friday, but

noted gadgets such as tablets are gaining in popularity.

“TVs are the things that drive our business,” he said. “They’re better, cheaper and bigger than they’ve ever been.”Sareena Nickoli, manager of

City Furniture in Vernon, has been holding Black Friday sales for three years and said the response has been positive.

“It has been successful,” said Nickoli, who also receives deals from suppliers. “We might as well take advantage of what our suppli-ers are giving us. It’s a good deal so why not pass it on?

“It’s a good time to start the ear-ly-buying process.”

Around this time of year, Nickoli starts to see more tables and chairs, bar stools, sofas, love seats and electric fireplaces. In terms of style, she said anything goes as customers are mixing materials –

metal, reclaimed wood, leather.“You don’t really see the match-

ing sofa and love seat anymore,” she said. “There’s nothing that looks wrong anymore.”

While Black Friday has tradition-ally been slanted toward electron-ics, other retail sectors are getting in on the action. Rainer Hagemann, owner of Hagemann Jewellers on 30th Avenue, is dabbling in Black Friday for a second year.

“We always have sections where we feature new items, and we’ll certainly have something ready for the day,” said Hagemann, noting jewellers don’t have the benefit of supplier discounts.

“It may develop over the years if we focus on that and if we support it enough.”

Stores and shopping malls have an amazing amount of games and toys of all kinds on display at this time of year - enough to discourage the most motivated shoppers. Here are some tips to nd a toy that will appeal to children and parents alike.

1. SAFETY FIRST •••Make sure your gift is age appropriate

for the recipient. The packaging usually mentions the age parameters for each toy: 0-6 months, 5 years and older, etc. Toys for young toddlers should be checked to ensure they don’t contain small pieces that could be swallowed and that the plastic is sturdy. If you prefer, you can offer hypoal-lergenic toys that are easy to clean, such as stuffed toys, cloth books, and puppets.

2. EDUCATIONAL FUN •••Toys can be both fun and education-

al. For little ones, think about toys with different colours and textures. For older children, there are games to develop patience, logic, and memory skills.

3. SOME PEACE AND QUIET, PLEASE! •••

It’s all too easy to be drawn to toys that make noise, such as re trucks with blaring sirens and tinkling magic fairy wands. Perhaps this is the year to start avoiding these kinds of playthings; most children already have countless musical toys that drive their parents crazy! If you can’t resist, at least make sure there’s a “stop” button.

4. PREVENT TEARS •••Avoid toys with multiple parts if the

gift is not going to be unwrapped at the recipient’s home. The child will, of course, want to open it immediately and some pieces are bound to be lost before they go home. If batteries are required, make sure they are included. It is ex-tremely frustrating for children not to be able to play with new toys just because nobody has any batteries.www.teadesire.com

More and more stores are releas-ing their mega-sale flyers early in the fall, while local boutiques tend to advertise a bit closer to the date. Either way, before you launch your holiday shopping blitz, be sure to have a good idea of what you want, where to find it, and exactly when you need to get there.

Look for deals in bedding, home décor, dishware, brand-name clothing, and, of course, electron-ics. The hottest bargains this year will be on laptops, tablets, and eReaders. Smartphone accessories are also great Black Friday buys. Although traditio nally a retail shop-ping event, mobile phone service providers and the retail stores who sell their plans are jumping on the

bandwagon with superb rebates on smartphone packages. If it’s time for you to renew your plan, keep an eye out for good one-off deals on time and bonus services.

The desktop computer seems to be lagging in popu larity these days, but what that means for consu mers is wild discounts on top-quality hardware. It is now possible to set yourself up with up-to-snuff equip-ment for homework or home office for under $500!

Don’t ignore local shops, where Black Friday shopping is catching up with big city box stores. Check the ads and flyers in your week-ly newspaper for great deals on sports equipment, toys, and other great Christmas gift ideas.

Look in your local newspaper for great shopping at the holidays, and all year!CHECK your local ads and flyers

X6 Wednesday, November 26, 2014 - The Morning Star Black Friday 2014

You’ll need your stretchy pants this Friday — but not the let-it-all-hang-out holiday ones. No, it’s time

to take out the stretchy athletic variety. Black Friday is here, and as always it will be a sprint through the

crowds, down the aisles, and over to the cashier with the deals you’ve been waiting for all year.

Although the images we see of Black Friday usually feature the screaming, pushing hordes at elec-tronics stores, the National Retail Foundation (NRF) reports that the hottest items are clothing and cloth-ing accessories, as well as CDs, books, DVDs, and video games. In third place are consumer electronics and computer-related accessories, then toys, home décor, and gift cards.

If getting your shopping thrills means get-ting out and doing the real thing, be sure to prepare properly in order to find the best deals. That means keeping an eye on store flyers in early November, filing your electron-

ic coupons received from online advertisers, and clipping coupons from newspapers and flyers. More and more people are also tuning in to social network sites to follow the discounts on offer. On Thursday night, set your alarm, pack some snacks, and put on your game face: the great event is here.

Prepare for Black Friday by browsing the flyers and following the deals offered by stores through the social media.

On November 28, light up your holiday shopping with great deals and discounts at participating retailers.

Special Black Friday Hours 8am to 9pm

THE MAN’SThe holiday season is almost upon

us. Don’t wait until the last minute and have to battle the crowds to find gifts for your husband. Go ahead and start now to get him what he really wants.

Sports CollectiblesDoes your husband or boyfriend

love sports? Look for collectible cards, especially rookie cards. Get a jersey or hat with his team’s logo and add his name to the item. Keep an eye out for signed prints. If he has a treasured baseball or football, buy a ball case to display it.

HobbiesRegular bicycles or mountain bikes

make great gifts for men who enjoy riding.

If he likes to fish or golf, do a little ‘research’ now to find out what kind

of equipment he’d like to have. Con-sider fishing accessories like tackle boxes, lures, rod holder and fish finders. Golfers might like new clubs, range finders or electronic score-keepers. These make great stocking stuffers, too.

Power ToolHow about gifts to help him keep

the home looking and working great? Tools are often high on a man’s ‘want’ list. Invest in a drill kit for simple tasks or an electric air compressor for the garage or shop.

Outdoor tools like leaf or snow blowers make chores a cinch. Land-scaping tools like string and hedge

trimmers, lawn mowers, gardening tools and pressures washers make clean up a breeze.

Car Accessories

Help your husband protect one of his biggest investments with an an-ti-theft system. Cargo management products for the roof or back hitch are always appreciated.

GrillsThe Grill Master will appreciate

one of the new and improved grills on the market, available for indoor

and outdoor use. And don’t forget the tools, aprons and other accessories!

Tech GadgetsThe techie in your life knows there

are always new cell phones, tablets and other products out there. Start listening now for clues about his dream gift. Also look at the acces-sories for these products such as covers, chargers and app gift cards.

Put on your game face and get ready to Race!

Best Bargains Are close to home

E veryone has experienced massive crowds of Christmas shoppers in the bigger shop-

ping centres in large towns. How about avoiding the hordes of people this year by inding your Christmas gifts closer to home; it can save you time and money!

You’re sure to ind what you need at the gift stores, lorists and shops that sell locally produced items found in all areas of the country.

✤ SAVE TIMEFirst of all, most of us don’t have

much time to do our Christmas shopping. Reducing travelling dis-tances between your home and the stores can save you a lot of time. By staying in the area where you live,

you can avoid trafic jams and the frus-trating search for a parking spot.

✤ HELP WHEN YOU NEED ITBy patronizing local shops on a

regular basis the sales people come to know you and are able to give a more personalized service, perhaps they can even help you ind the per-fect gift! For example, the sales clerk down at the cosmetic boutique will know the name of the perfume your wife or girlfriend tried recently; or the salesman at the motorcycle store will know the type of helmet your husband has wanted for a long time.

✤ LOCAL PRODUCTS AND RELAXATION

One great idea is a gift basket with a selection of locally produced prod-ucts. In addition to supporting your area merchants, purchasing this

type of gift will also encourage local producers. Alternately, you could offer a gift certiicate to a health spa or wellness retreat. Not only will this type of gift be beneicial to a loved one, but you’ll also discover great little places often hidden away some-where close by!

Electronics dominate most teen wish lists every year. Look for a gaming system like the Nintendo WII, Playstation, or Xbox 360. If your teen already has a system, games and accessories go over well. Games that encourage movement and the accessories that go with them are a great way to get the kids off the couch to dance, bowl, hula hoop, or do any number of other fun activities for boys or girls.

Other popular electronics include feature-packed cell phones and their accessories, like speakers and alarm clock combos remain popular. Small, lightweight netbooks provide a lower cost solution to laptops at very affordable prices. Digital video and still cameras are popular with teens who grew up as part of the youtube

generation and the prices are very reasonable. Just be sure to monitor what the kids upload for the world to see.

You could buy a plain, ser-viceable lash drive, but why go boring, when you can pick up something your kid will love? For her, consider a kitschy gold and silver lash drive. For him, How about a college logo or NASCAR

theme lash drive? They make great little stocking stuffers for techie teens. Other great choices include phone covers and skins that come in all kinds of designs and colours and laptop or netbook bags.

The latest accessory trends for teens are big, bold, fun, and more than a lit-tle whimsical. Chunky watches are in for both boys and girls, and oversized retro sunglasses are a hot trend. Girls are wearing long and drippy or chandelier style earrings, stacked bracelets and complicated shoes with lots of straps and buckles. For boys, Converse All Stars have made a huge comeback on the fashion scene with inventive designs and classic retro silhouettes.

Buying clothes for teens is always a risky proposition. Skinny or straight-cut jeans are the prevalent trend for both boys and girls, but some teens would not be caught dead in them. The best option for buying clothes for your teen is to check the laundry basket and write down the brands, colours, and sizes that appear most often and then buy similar styles and colours that are not on sale ... because if it’s on sale, it’s probably already out of style. Kids tend to

gravitate towards certain brands and speciic style that feels comfortable and deines who they are. Try to mimic that personal style...and then keep the receipt, because it might be going back to the store.

Memorabilia, team jerseys, jackets, and hats, realistic, life-sized wall stickers and other room decorations, and little doodads like key chains, bobbleheads, and drinkware are usually well-received by sports fans of all ages. For active kids, sports equipment is a great choice. Look beyond the obvious selection of bats and balls for protective equipment, sport-speciic duffel bags, and things that make practice more pleasant, like a self-iltering water bottle. Skateboards, surboards, roller blades, and bicycles are still good choices for active kids who aren’t involved in team sports.

For adventurous, outdoorsy teens, consider camping equipment, a canoe or a kayak. For an adventurous kid who has everything, look into classes – diving, rock climbing, or photography, for example. Classes are also a good choice for a shy teen; it’s a great way to make friends who share the same interests.

If your teen’s got the beat, consider an instrument and lessons. Most stores that sell musical instruments will be able to direct you to a local instructor. Match the instrument to the kid’s personality; energetic teens might prefer drums or lead guitar, more mellow teens might be more comfortable with a keyboard instru-ment or bass guitar. Never-miss-a-moment fans of TV shows might secretly harbour a wish to sing or dance, so singing or dancing lessons could be the way to go. Learning

to play, dance, or sing has lots of side beneits as well, like increased self-esteem, conidence, and manual dexterity.

Gifts for Leaving Home

Here are some practical gift ideas for those ying the nest & who only have a limited budget.

FOR THE KITCHEN A few dishes are always useful,

unless fro zen meals are the only item on the menu! Don’t just stop at plates, bowls, glasses, cups, and utensils. You can also offer pots, pans, cookie sheets, and plastic dishes. For proud pastry chefs mea-suring cups, muf n and cake pans, a whisk, and wooden spoons are also essential; don’t forget a large bowl for mixing the ingredients.

SOME DECORATIVE ITEMS Lamps and accent furniture

are not necessarily essential, but they are very useful and make an apartment much more com fortable. Other items, such as curtains, are not always affordable to start with. Of course, choosing the right colour can be dif cult, but you can always go for neutral tones.

HOUSEHOLD LINENS Oven mitts, aprons, towels, wash-

cloths, tea towels, and dish cloths - they may not be the gifts your young person is dreaming of, but they’re so practical. And it’s better than receiving a garbage can or cleaning products! Plus, household linens can be quite expensive, so you’ll really be helping them out.

If you have no idea what to give people this Christmas,

how about offering them tickets? That’s right, tickets! But what kind of tickets?

Well, there are all sorts of differ-ent ones; there is something to suit everyone on your gift list. For sports enthusiasts

Many adults and children are sports lovers. Hockey, baseball, ten-nis, boxing, figure skating — there are as many possibilities as there are exciting sports. You’re sure to find ti ckets to suit your favourite sports fan. For music fans

There’s nothing like a great con-cert to make a music fan happy. You probably already know the groups or favourite artists of your loved ones, so all you have to do is find a show that will be put on in your area and buy some tickets before they all disappear.

For generous hearts For all those who like to help

people, tickets to a bene fit concert or charity gala could be the perfect gift du ring the Christmas season. For art lovers

A trip to the theatre to enjoy a comedy or a drama, a classical or modern ballet, a grand opera, a symphony concert — there’s defi-nitely something for everyone! For those with Lady Luck on their side

Why not a lottery ticket? It’s always fun and who knows, you may be offering someone a gift of enormous value.

Consider giving pairs of tickets as a gift. A hockey game or a concert is so much more fun when you’re with someone else. Oh, one last detail: make sure the person you’re offering the tickets to is free on the day of the event!

Named for the day stores and re-tailers start “getting in the black” (turning a profit), Black Friday is notorious for frustratingly

long lines, thick crowds and limited discount merchandise. But despite this, it’s a highly anticipated occasion as shoppers hunt for amaz-ing bargains and hope they’ll get incredibly low prices for more expensive items. Here are some suggestions for handling Black Friday.Know what you want before heading out

If you don’t have any idea of what you want, seriously question your purpose in heading out into the crowds. Without a plan, it will be tempting to spend money you don’t necessarily have on items you don’t necessarily need and the experience will be fraught with exhaustion, impulse buying, and possibly even guilt. It is a lot better to have a plan in mind, or else you could be using this day more constructively to take a rest or see a movie!

If you’re shopping for gifts, write a list of all the people you’re planning on buying gifts for. This way, you can keep track of who receives what, creating an organized method for your shopping and helps you to avoid duplicating gifts or missing out on anyone. Decide which person is the recipient of which item.

If you’re buying things for yourself or for the household, again write a list. If you’re after clothes, specify what types of clothes rather than thinking “Oh anything that looks reasonably priced”. If you want a pair of jeans, new pajamas and a stack of new socks, write these things down. Anything else is peripheral. Same goes for household items: avoid wandering along in the hope of adding “stuff ” to your kitchen or other areas of the house. Think about what is actually missing, broken, or outdated that could do with adding or upgrading to your household rather than buying gadgets you’re not even sure what to do with!Plan your budget

If things are tight, a budget is essential. Even if they’re not tight, a budget will help to rein in impulse buys and can curb the temptation to buy things just because you think someone else “might like it”. Decide how much money you have spare, and stick to that amount.Plan your shopping attack with the preci-sion of a general planning a battle. Not only is the budget and list important, but so are the methods you plan to adopt when going in for the bargain. Timing is everything with limited bargains, so the first thing to keep in mind is hour at which you intend to turn up. The earli-er, the better, if you have your eye on items that you know will sell out fast.

Find your bargains. Collect all newspaper ads, circulars, and coupon packets mentioning Black Friday discounts. Know what is on sale, who is selling it, and during what period those items are on sale - some stores have Black Fri-day sales going on all day, but others keep them going for only a few hours.

Develop a plan of attack by drawing up a map of places to visit in a particular order. It is good to know what stores you need to hit first, preferably the one with the most important items or gifts on your list. Be sure to clearly mark those stores having sales on only at certain times, along with the time marked clearly.

Organize your transportation. Remember that the parking lots will often be congested. Are there other solutions than taking the car? Perhaps you can be dropped off and picked up later. Or stay with a friend who lives near the stores, and ferry your purchases back there before returning for more shopping?Think laterally

It’s a good idea to think about what alterna-tive items you might substitute for items you’re seeking that have already sold out. The chances that you won’t always get the items you’ve planned to buy are fairly high, especially with popular items. Look through the catalogs for alternate, and less popular, items, including gift alternatives if you’re gift shopping.Take along anything you need to help you

While it’s important not to be carrying too much, things you will probably benefit from in-clude: a watch so that you know the time, a cell phone to keep in touch with family members and friends also hitting the shops, and bags to carry your purchases in. Even if the stores pro-vide bags, it is a good idea to bring along your own, stronger bags, especially if you plan on carrying the purchases around for a bit before putting them in the car or elsewhere.

Be sure to bring along your money! Do a double check before leaving the house to ensure that you have the relevant cards, cash and vouchers you want to bring along. Check that you have your discount coupons and specials catalogs.

Most importantly of all, be sure to bring along your list and a pen or pencil. Find a safe and easy place to keep it so that you can pull it out frequently to follow it and check things off.Plan breaks

Rushing around all the time will wear out even the most ardent shopper. As well as ensur-ing you’re eating properly during the day out, be sure to factor in some breaks for a breather and to regain your sense of humour so that you avoid Black Friday turning into Black Mood Friday!
