Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher Conferences were held last week for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. There is time set aside each semester for this important dialogue between parents and teachers. We are appreciative of all the parents who were able to attend the conferences. Our hope is that parents left the conferences with a better under-standing of their child’s performance along with some strategies to improve their learning. In our school-parent partnership, we all aim for each child to achieve to his/her potential. Research shows that parent involvement in their child’s learning is positively related to academic achievement. The attendance data for last week’s parent-teacher conferences is as follows: - 92% attendance from Kindergarten to Grade 5 parents - 70% attendance from Grade 6-12 parents

The 2010 Giving Tree On November 30th you’ll find the CIS Giving Tree decorated with gift tags in the office. Each gift tag will note the age and gender of a child who needs a gift. You and your family may choose to take a gift tag from the tree and shop for the child together. The receptionist will record your tag number and let you know if the child has indicated a gift he or she particularly desires. Return the wrapped gift with the tag identifying its recipient and ask the receptionist to cross off your num‐ber from the master list before placing your gift under the tree. We’ll present the gifts to a representative from The Department of Children and Family Services the night of our Winter Wonderland Musical Performance on December 14th.

Great CIS Support for Yellow to Green Campaign
CIS Students made a positive contribution to their environment and community when they became involved in a Yellow Pages Recycling Program. Under the direction of Mr. Jason, Grade 4
teacher and coordinator of the Yellow2Green Challenge at CIS, the student body collected over 2600 old telephone directories. The old phone books will be used for home insulation to aid in
energy efficiency. A healthy clean environment is everyone’s responsibility and CIS
students participated 100% in this recycling program. Special congratulations to Ms. Krista’s class, who collected the most
phonebooks, and to Mr. Jason’s class, who came a close second.

International Disabilities Day Fundraiser – Civvies Day ($2) next Friday, December 3rd
The Cayman Government has invited schools to participate in a themed day entitled “It’s About Ability,” focused on ad‐dressing the gaps in services for persons with disabilities. This event coincides with the International Day of Persons With Disabilities (Dec. 3rd) designated by the United Nations. The Ministry of Education, Training & Employment, along with the Steering Committee for Persons with Disabilities has invited CIS to participate in a dress‐down day (Civvies Day), with all proceeds donated to an organization which supports persons with disabilities, such as Maple House or the Sunrise Adult Training Centre, or individuals in the community who have disabilities and do not have the necessary funds for assistive devices such as wheelchairs. All money for Civvies day will be collected by homeroom teachers and donated for these pur‐poses. A $2.00 donation is requested to dress in Civvies clothes on
this day.

IB Program Update Troy Bajardi, IB Coordinator
This year has been an exciting one in the International Baccalaureate Program at CIS. As the only such program in the west-ern Caribbean, these select students have welcomed the challenges and responsibilities of representing the Cayman Islands and our school on a global scale. With just over 800,000 students on the planet enrolled in IB courses, it is indeed an honor and a privi-lege for our students. Our six students (Grade 12) who are IB Diploma candidates are working tirelessly to complete their Extended Essay research pa-pers due just after the new year. These are externally graded by IB examiners from around the globe. In addition to this college level project, they are also continuing their work in the area of Theory of Knowledge, a course designed to facilitate thinking skills and creativity of thought. As members of numerous sports clubs, musical groups, and various other extra-curricular activities on the island, all of our students are truly developing into well-rounded and individuals. Furthermore, all of our Grade 12 students enrolled in IB courses are providing incredible examples of the importance of hard work, commitment and integrity to our Grade 11 IB students as well as all others on campus. We are proud of them as they are on their way to becoming the Cayman Islands first ever International Baccalaureate Diploma graduates.

CIS Students Swim Away with Awards at the Lion’s Pool
Raegan R. & Arielle F. Vault to Greatness in Recent Gymnastics Meet
Raegan R. and Arielle F. (both Grade 3) represented the Mo‐tions Unlimited Gym in a gymnastics’ meet this past weekend in Rock Hill, SC. The Crown of the Carolinas hosted 1065 gymnasts comprising of 46 teams from 9 states and 3 countries. Raegan medaled in every event (vault, uneven bars, floor and beam) winning 3 bronze and 1 silver which earned her the silver (2nd place) all‐around in the Level 4. competition. Arielle placed 6th, 7th, 8th and 5th in the four events which earned her 6th place in Level 4 all‐around. The girls did a fabulous job considering that this was their first Level 4 competition. They will compete again in January at a meet in Las Vegas, NV.
Many CIS students participated in the annual Mike Lockwood Memorial Swim Meet that concluded last Sunday at the Lions Pool. The meet, which took place over the course of four days, was open to any interested local children and featured three teams from Jamaica. Cole M. (Grade 8) took the high point awards for the 11/12 boys age group and picked up 2 gold medals and 7 silvers in the process. In the 6 and Under Boys com-petition, Bradford G. won 6 Silver medals. Lawton G. won a Silver medal for the 8
and Under Boys. Other CIS students making appearances included Grade 6 student Flynn H. in her first official swim meet, Natalie M., Liam M., Cassidy M., Isabela W. and Sofia W. Veteran swimmer Katie K. who had to miss the com-petition due to a cast, demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship by showing up to cheer for fellow swimmers. Great job to all!

What is your background and heritage? I am Caymanian-Jamaican. I was born in the George Town Hospital and raised in Northward in the district of Bodden Town. Both of my
parents are Jamaican born, and my mother’s family moved here between 1973 and 1974. I was raised in a Christian household like most other Caymanians, but we don’t belong to a particular group because we believe that God is God no matter how you interpret him.
Which countries have you lived in? I have lived in Grand Cayman for the majority of my life. However, I spent 3 months in Florida because of hurricane Ivan, and was in Jamaica for the summer of 2004 to spend time with relatives.
How long have you been living in the Cayman Islands? My entire young life so far.
How many years have you been at C.I.S.? Since I enrolled in grade nine.
Describe yourself (3 best and worst 3 personality traits). I think of myself as a very shy, awkward, and solitary type of person, if I would be talking about bad qualities. If speak-
ing about the good... I would say with confidence, that I am an understanding, very determined type of person, who is a genuinely beautiful person (in the sense that I am a good if not great lis- tener, who is kind, sweet, honest, and optimistic about difficult situations and the potential of all sorts of people.)
Ninjas or pirates? Why? Pirates. Pirates are more open people, visiting places all over the world not just limiting themselves to Asia, even if they are looking to take over the area and steal everything from everyone.
If you had to pick one place in your town to bring a tourist, where would you go? Why? I would bring him or her to East End, and visit the blowholes in North Side because that area is more serene and majestic. The way the waves crash against the ironshore is so catastrophic like a volcano. The best thing is that the tide provides you a chance to get a glimpse of wildlife that you probably wouldn’t get unless you were a diver Also, I would get the opportu-nity to tell somebody about my cherished childhood memory that occurred when I went there, and the tourist would get an experience of talking to a Cayma-nian, and hear my story of the importance of this place.
What is your taste in music? What is your Favourite song of all time, favourite at the moment? I like mostly Caribbean music, especially genres such as Reggae and Soca as well as R&B. For both preferences I like the old and new artists and music of both types. Right now, my favourite song is “Smile” by the Alchemist released in 2009, and my all time favourite since 2008, is “Lifetime” by Maxwell, even if it’s nine years old.
Are you a collector of anything? What? Why? Yes, I collect pens and stamps. I collect them because my family convinced me to do that -- stamps to spend time with my grandmother.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why? I would want the power of cupid ( to have the ability to make people fall in love with each other) so I could give everyone, including myself the opportunity to be loved, because in my opinion all the world needs love, because with love we have the potential to end even the strongest of wars.
What is your idea of fun? If given a choice to skip school for a day, how would you spend the entire day? If I was given the choice to skip school for a day, I would most likely spend it a) on a boat (given if I had the money to rent one) cruising around the island, taking in the sun and chilling out with some close friends (if I ever get the nerve to confidently approach them), splashing in the water (so I don’t overheat); b) lying in a hammock all day long on a quiet beach; c) dancing freely at the hottest, drug free party; or, if I can’t do any of these things, d) not skipping school.
Which is your most favourite place on this earth? Why? My favourite place on earth is definitely on the water especially in Cayman, on a boat because I love feeling the wind in my hair, and the sun on my skin because it fills my heart with light, enlightening my life.
If you could eat dinner with any 3 people (deceased or alive) who would they be? Bob Marley, Tyra Banks, and my maternal great-grandmother.
If you had to evacuate your house immediately, what is the one thing you would grab on the way out? Simple, nothing. I would be content to get out with my life, because no material thing I own is really worth saving; the memories of them are enough to keep me happy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“BOOK IT” TO GRAND CAYMAN NOVEMBER 27th
The Camana Bay Third Annual Children’s Book Festival
Hosted by Camana Bay and Books & Books
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (November 11, 2010): On November 27th, young readers
(and their parents) can enjoy a day of free literary events at the third annual Children’s Book
Festival at Books & Books in Camana Bay. Camana Bay, the newest Town Centre in Grand
Cayman, offers a range of entertainment options including high-end shopping boutiques, a state-
of-the-art six-screen movie theatre, a bustling book store and coffee shop, and a series of free
events which support Camana Bay’s mission to encourage a culturally enriched environment for
residents and visitors alike.
Hosted by Cayman Bay and Books & Books in partnership with Maples and Calder, this year’s
Children’s Book Festival features an impressive line up of internationally celebrated children’s
authors and illustrators. Children ages 3 - 7 will be treated to a fun, educational and interactive
presentation by Eric Litwin and James Dean, the author and illustrator of the New York Times
bestselling sensation Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes. Stroll along with Pete the Cat and watch
his shoes change from white to red to blue to brown to WET as he steps in piles of strawberries,
blueberries and other big messes. James Dean will give a painting demonstration and Eric Litwin
will have the kids moving and grooving as he plays the guitar and the banjo and sings. This year,
preteens will have the opportunity to meet award-winning authors Ridley Pearson and Tom
Angleberger. Ridley Pearson, also a bestselling adult crime novelist, will present the latest book in
his popular Kingdom Keepers series, Kingdom Keepers III: Disney in Shadow. Follow the
Kingdom Keepers, five teenage heroes whose job it is to protect the theme parks from the
Overtakers, on another behind-the-scenes adventure in the magical world of Disney. Tom
Angleberger will share his witty and funny new book, The Strange Case of Origami Yoda. Discover
how sixth-grader Dwight uses an origami finger puppet of Yoda to predict the date of a pop quiz,
reveal who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and save a classmate from popularity-crushing
embarrassment with some well-timed advice.
The festival takes place at Camana Bay on Saturday, November 27 from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM.
From 11:00 AM onwards, Books & Books will host the visiting authors and illustrator for a full
schedule of book presentations. They will be joined by “Gimistory” performers Nasaria Suckoo-
Chollette and Rita Estevanovich who will entertain the children with their traditional Caymanian
storytelling. The schedule for the bookstore events is as follows:
11:00 AM Eric Litwin and James Dean, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes (ages 3-7)
12:00 PM “Gimistory” performers Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette and Rita Estevanovich (all ages)
1:00 PM Tom Angleberger, The Strange Case of Origami Yoda (ages 8-12)
2:00 PM Ridley Pearson, Kingdom Keepers III: Disney in Shadow (ages 8-12)
Throughout the day kids can take part in a range of activities, crafts, and games outdoors on The
Paseo with a complimentary schedule that provides an alternative for kids older or younger than
the age group at which the book presentations are aimed. A giant sandpit will delight young tots,
while older kids can explore their creative sides with a variety of crafts including origami, sock
puppets, and bookmarks or test their problem-solving skills at the mystery maze corner.
Drumming classes, sidewalk chalking, and a sing along with Bona Fide will also be on offer.
Books & Books and Camana Bay will donate part of the proceeds from this year’s festival to the
Cayman Islands Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
