Parking Lot: We ask that all parents park in designated parking spots when picking students up from school. Please do not park along the curb. If there are no parking spots available, parents are asked to use the Park District Parking Lot. Please consider using the Circle Drive to pick up your student. We need to make sure the parking lot is safe for students.

Empty Bowl Fundraiser: Ms. Fiedler and the Erickson Staff are auctioning off Empty Bowls and Mugs to raise funds for the Bloomingdale Food Pantry. This is a silent auction and the highest bid will win the Empty Bowl/Mugs. Click here to access the online auction form. The Silent Auction ends TOMORROW at 4:00 pm

Mitten Tree: Donations for the mitten tree started November 26th and runs until Friday, December 21st. The Mitten Tree is set up in the front lobby. Please donate new mittens, hats, and gloves.

Vision & Hearing Screening: On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, the Dupage County Health Department will be conducting vision and/or hearing screening for preschool - third grade students & select fourth & fifth grade students. Certified hearing and vision screening technicians will be providing screenings as mandated by the state in search for any vision or hearing deficiencies. In the event that deficiencies are detected, there will be a follow up with families to make sure the necessary diagnostic testing is accessible and provided, as needed.

Westfield Band Concert: The Westfield Band will be at Erickson on Wednesday, December 5th at 9:00 am to perform holiday songs. This is always a wonderful event as former Erickson students return to get the entire school in the holiday spirit.

Spirit Day: Be BOLD and wear BLUE & GOLD on Friday, December 7, 2018.

Winter MAP Testing: Next week is the start of Winter MAP Testing. Students in First - Fifth grade will participate in MAP Testing. The MAP Test is a computerized adaptive assessment. The computer adjusts the difficulty of the questions so that each student takes a unique test. The difficulty of each question is based on how well the student has answered previous questions. If you have questions about the MAP Assessment or would like to know how your child(ren) performed, please contact the classroom teacher.

Character Counts! @ Erickson: During the month of December, all students will have a chance to participate in Color a Smile. Color A Smile is a nonprofit organization, where volunteers of all ages and abilities, create cheerful crayon drawings. Every month, Color A Smile distributes thousands of these colorful masterpieces to Senior Citizens, Troops Overseas, and anyone in need of a smile. Click here for coloring pages.

DID YOU KNOW?... that the PTO has lists of Teacher Favorite Things on the PTO Website. In this season of giving, we hope that this might be something families find useful. You can find your teacher’s favorite things here: http://www.sd13.org/PTO1.aspx - on the right column link to Teacher’s Favorites.

….and because of the support of families, the PTO was able to fund & cater dinner on the last evening of conferences as a thank you to our teachers and staff.

HOT LUNCH: IMPORTANT Hot lunch for Trimester 2 has started. Please consult your order confirmations/receipts (from JotForm) for which days lunch was purchased. A few students thought they were getting hot lunch but were not on the list this time. For those that ordered on the snow day, 11/26, the PTO will transfer your order to the first Monday in Trimester 3. Trimester 3 ordering period will open in February. HOLIDAY GIFT CORNER: The Holiday Gift Corner will be open for students to shop on Thursday, 12/13 in the evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Students can also shop during the school day on Friday, 12/14. A gift list/money envelope will be sent home next week (cash & check payments only). See flyer for more info.

AMAZON SMILE: During this holiday season we know a lot of you will be shopping on Amazon. Please remember to go to Smile.Amazon.com and select Erickson Elementary PTO - we will get a small percentage of your purchase. You use the same login as your regular Amazon account and your shopping cart carries over. It’s that easy! And don’t forget to go to this site each time you make a purchase year-round.

THANKSGIVING FEAST: Thank you to all the families that donated funds to go towards this annual event. We could not do it without each of you!!

Bloomingdale School District Standards Based Grading

Grades should accurately reflect student achievement and areas for growth.

Grading Principles1. Student behaviors (effort, participation,

adherence to class rules, etc...) are not included in student grades.

2. Students will not receive a lower grade for assignments turned in late.

3. Students are not provided extra credit or bonus points to increase a grade. Seek only evidence that more work has resulted in a higher level of achievement.

4. Academic Dishonesty does not result in a grade reduction.

5. A student is graded on his or her academic performance and not as a group.

6. Timed Assessments & Pop Quizzes should not be included in a student’s grade.

7. Every activity or assignment that is assigned to students are not graded and recorded in the gradebook.

8. Don’t assign grades using inappropriate or unclear performance standards; provide clear descriptions of achievement expectations.

9. Don’t assign grades based on student’s achievement compared to other students; compare each student’s performance to preset standards.

10. Don’t rely on the mean; consider other measures of central tendency and use professional judgment.

11. Don’t include zeros in grade determination when evidence is missing or as punishment; use alternatives, such as reassessing to determine real achievement or use “I” for Incomplete or Insufficient evidence.

12. Don’t use information from formative assessments and practice to determine grades; use only summative evidence.

13. Don’t summarize evidence accumulated over time when learning is developmental and will grow with time and repeated opportunities; in those instances emphasize more recent achievement.

14. Don’t leave students out of the grading process. Involve students – they can – and should – play key roles in assessment and grading that promote achievement.

15. Homework is for practice of skills and are not factored into a student’s grade.

Why Standards Based Grading1. Grades should accurately reflect student

achievement and areas for growth.2. There are over 20 standards in math & 40

standards in Reading/Language Arts. Standards Based Grading allows educators and parents to know exactly which standards students have mastered and which standards students still need support.

3. Averaging penalizes a student who does not know the content at the start of a unit, but fully understands the content at the conclusion of the unit. Educators should look at a student’s most recent attempt & mode to determine a grade.

4. A student with an 88% average is not very different from a student with a 91% average, although the two students will most likely receive a different grade on the report card. Under Standards Based Grading, these two students will receive the same grade.

5. Teachers are working collaboratively and have a common understanding of what students need to know in order to master a standard. This will bring uniformity across grade levels & buildings in the Bloomingdale School District.

6. Students will only be assessed on their achievement and not on behaviors such as effort, participation or homework completion. The 15 grading principles will bring consistency to grading practices.

7. We want students to take ownership of their learning. With Standard Based Grading, students will focus more on mastering standards and less on getting a score on an assignment.

8. Effort & work completion will continue to be expectations of teachers in a Standards Based Grading system. This information will be contained in the Work Habit portion of the report card.
