First Sunday of Advent
November 29, 2020 2 SAINT BERNARD
In our daily lives we are watchful for everyday occurrences, such as spotting stop signs at unfamiliar intersections, checking food labels for allergens, or perhaps searching a locker for missing paper due during afternoon classes. We do these things as a second nature; drivers are aware that traffic patterns at intersections need to be identified; those with food allergies know they must carefully evaluate foods for ingredients which could harm them; students desire to give teachers their work on time in order to maintain grades and not invite academic trouble. When we don’t anticipate these aspects of life, we sometimes find ourselves in hot water. Only in hindsight do we realize the importance of being prepared and training ourselves to be alert. After sin entered the world, God’s plan to reconcile his children to himself began to unfold. For many generations, the Israelites were alert and waiting for the promised messiah. The faithful people told one another about God’s promise to send a messiah, the one who would save his people. They waited for his holy one, this prince of peace. Alert and watchful, God’s people waited, remembering that God always keeps his promises. The prophets reminded the Israelites about the promised Messiah; likewise, the Church uses the season of Advent to remind God’s people to anticipate Christ’s Second Coming. Through Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel, we are encouraged to prepare ourselves for his return at the end of time, whenever that may be. We are God’s people, made his adopted sons and daughter through our Baptism. Once again, God’s people are waiting in anticipation of God’s promises. We remember that our Lord has told us that he is returning for his people, and he instructs his followers to remember that his arrival is in our future. We prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming not out of fear, or following a rule of some sort, but we prepare for him out of love for him. Like the servants in the Gospel reading, we have been given tasks and we are to keep up with our work in the faith. Jesus taught his followers to feed the hungry, and care for the poor. We are to seek Jesus in every aspect of our lives and live in service to him.

Advent is just weeks away That means our
GIVING TREE will soon be up and decorated with “ornaments” for children and families in need. The Christmas Elves have already started their work behind the scenes and we are
so thankful to have their continued help. The trees will go up for Saturday, November 28th. This year all gifts need to be back by Sunday, December 13th. Tags will be marked accordingly. Due to social distancing there will be 3 trees that you can pick up a tag and return your gift to.
One on the Altar, one in the vestibule and one in the Chapel. Among the recipients of the generous gift of our parish community are Hour
Children (children of incarcerate women), Mercy First (foster children), Catholic Charities, Sisters of Life (unwed/homeless pregnant women), Mercy Home (special
adults), Saint Michael/St. Malachy and some neighborhood residents. Our gifts will brighten the lives of many ranging from the yet unborn and their moms through children of all ages
and the adults of Mercy Home. Please feel free to purchase a gift now, at your leisure, if the timing is better for you. The sales will be
starting quickly. If you choose to purchase a gift ahead of time, please just label the gift with the age and gender so we can sort them easily. Many of the requests we receive are not specific so you can get a jump
on your Christmas shopping if you like! Additionally, we always receive many requests for teens especially from MERCY FIRST and HOUR CHILDREN.
Gift cards are always a great idea for that age group! Please drop all Gift Cards to the Rectory or in either of the two locked collection boxes at the back of church.
Please remember to bring your gift UNWRAPPED and attach the ornament from the tree to it. We need a volunteer (s) to drop off the gifts to Sisters of Life on Dec. 14th. The gifts need to be
dropped off in Manhattan. An SUV or van will most likely be needed. If anyone is interested, please contact the Parish House and leave your name and number. Thank You!
For the first week of Advent, the Advent Candle of Hope has been memorialized In Memory of
Richard R. Cerchione By his Family
If you would like to add to any of our Christmas decorations “In Memory of” or “In honor of” your loved ones, forms are available in the church & Rectory.
