Welcome

The Tabard TheaTre company
From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director
Tlhere are many parts of my job as artistic director that I love, deeply and passionately. One of those is the opportunity to meet and greet you at performances. You are a blessing and a joy to me. Even though I have been
exploring activities outside of theatre — in my efforts to have a well-balanced life — and have, thus, not been at every performance the past two years like I was the first 16 years, I miss not seeing you. That makes the performances when I do see you all that more special. I’m always reminded of Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Those times become for me a party, and that’s how I like to think of Tabard shows — a party! And Uptown Holiday Swing is definitely that!
Come to think of it, the rest of our 18th season’s shows are a party, each with its own celebration of a snapshot of life’s special moments. If you’re not already a subscriber, I invite you to the party that is the remainder of our 18th season. We have a special 3-show subscription available. Get one for yourself. Get one for a friend or two — a unique holiday gift, that’s for sure.
Another absolute joy for me is to give theatre artists an opportunity to create a new show — and Uptown Holiday Swing is just one example of that. I love, too, being able to share with you new theatre experiences, whether it’s a show we’ve created or a show that we’re bringing to San Jose or this theatre for the first time. There is something very special about “first times.” It encourages and reminds us that even though humans have been creating for centuries upon centuries, there is still more to discover, explore, and experience. Creativity is an expression of the human spirit. Appreciating and participating in that creativity makes artists and patrons each mutually richer for the experience.
Thank you for making Tabard richer by being part of what we do. I look forward to having you with us for the rest of our 18th season of theatre “parties.”
From Nick Nichols, Executive Director
Happy holidays and thank your for joining us for Uptown Holiday Swing! This show is sure to get you in a swinging mood for this joyous season! At this time of year, we all pause to give thanks for the many blessings we
have and, here at Tabard, we have much for which to be grateful. We are most thankful for you, our loyal subscribers, donors, patrons, artists, and volunteers. You are the very heart of Tabard and make all that we do possible. Thanks to your support, we provide our community with great plays, youth education programs and a welcoming place for artists and audience alike. Last year, Tabard — through the gift of theatre — touched the lives of nearly 12,000 people. With your help we will do even more in the coming year. As 2018 draws to a close, I hope you will support us by making a tax-deductible donation to Tabard and help us continue to bring the joy of theatre to our community! Enjoy the show!

Musicians Nineteen has been San Jose’s premier big band since 2002 when Gus Kambeitz became artistic director. Morphing through three names in 16 years, they have hosted a virtual who’s-who of artists, and their concerts have raised thousands of dollars for San Jose jazz youth programs and West Valley College scholarships. Since 2011 Nineteen has been calling Tabard home, collaborating on original productions — from Stompin’ at the Savoy to The Duke, The Count, and Me to Big Band Christmas Surprise — for many years. Their next big Tabard event is February 9, featuring Tom Kennedy, bassist extraordinaire. Appears November 29 & 30 and December 1, 2 & 22 (evening).
The SOJ Big Band was formed in the South Bay almost 20 years ago, to play big-band arrangements of gospel, swing, Latin, R&B, and jazz tunes. The band has performed steadily since its inception, appearing before enthusiastic audiences and fans of ballroom dancing. With both male and female vocalists, the band covers a wide range of styles and eras — from Sinatra to Norah Jones, from swing to R&B and more modern arrangements — all designed for audiences’ listening and dancing pleasure. More at https://www.facebook.com/The-SOJ-Big-Band-6603709220/. Appears December 14, 15, 16 & 22 (afternoon).
A Touch of Brass was formed in 1986 to give local musicians an outlet to play big-band arrangements and improve their skills while creating a family-type atmosphere. The band has entertained audiences at the SJ Jazz Fest, 1st Night Santa Cruz, and numerous summer jazz concerts, as well as weddings, corporate events, and private parties. By performing at local middle and high schools with music from popular shows like Frozen, Aladdin, and Beauty & the Beast, they’ve been successful in presenting jazz the younger crowd can relate to. (Parents love it, too!) They are happy to play for Tabard this season! Appears December 7, 8, 9 & 21.
There will be a 15-minute intermission. A portion of Tabard’s concession
proceeds from this production will be donated to:
Be a part of it. Tabard. Bring your imagination; we’ll do the rest. Tabard.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) founded Tabard in 2001 and has produced every show since. Having been in “show business” for over six decades, she has lost track of how many shows she’s done. In the mid-1990s she created, produced, and co-hosted the weekly TV show Theater This Week. A produced playwright, director, teacher, and actor, she especially enjoys telling stories and giving others the opportunity to participate in that, whether as artists or attenders. In her non-theatre time she practices and teaches yoga, including aerial yoga.
Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) has been with Tabard since 2001 and has designed and/or built the set for nearly every mainstage show since then. A retired engineering manager with a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A., he has significantly helped Tabard raise the bar on the look of its shows. He also serves on Tabard’s board of directors. Theatrically, prior to Tabard Joe stage-managed and/or produced nearly 20 productions for Saratoga Drama Group (now South Bay Musical Theatre).
Carol Hawley (Choreographer) choreographed Holiday at the Savoy and has assisted with several shows including Babes in Hollywood. Favorite musical appearances include 42nd Street and South Pacific (South Bay Musical Theatre); Love, Laughter & Linguine (Tabard); Anything Goes (WVLO Musical Theatre); and Tabard’s original production of Stompin’ at the Savoy. She wishes you all a happy Uptown Holiday Swing!
Chloe Allen is ecstatic to return to Tabard! She appeared in Tabard’s A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup (Sydney), Homeward Bound (Angelina), The Miracle Worker (Martha/Beatrice), and last year’s Holiday at the Savoy. Other recent performances include Grease at Sunnyvale Community Players, Beauty and the Beast (Chip) at Wilcox High School, and The Music Man (Zaneeta) at Lyric Theatre of San Jose. Chloe is also thrilled to be part of Tabard’s next show, Snapshots.
Sam Borthwick is so excited to be joining Tabard again for Uptown Holiday Swing! She goes to Woodside High School and has performed in over 40 musicals throughout her theatre career, which will continue in college. In her free time, she plays Disney princesses at Party Princess Productions. She hopes you enjoy “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”; it’s her favorite!
Ray D’Ambrosio returns after Mom’s Gift and Making God Laugh. Ray’s many roles since following his daughters into theater in 2011 include Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (South Bay Musical Theatre), Billy in Chicago (Stage 1), Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast and Moonface in Anything Goes (Broadway by the Bay, Pacific Coast Repertory Theatre), and Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar (Stage 1; TBA award). Merry Christmas to the woman who rocks my Jingle Bells, Donna.
Kristin Hall is thrilled to make her Tabard debut in Uptown Holiday Swing. Recent Bay Area appearances include the world premiere of The Hood of Sherwood (Silicon Valley Shakespeare), James and the Giant Peach (Berkeley Playhouse), Music/Scene (PianoFight), and Pickpocket (Musical Café). Regional credits include Hairspray (Penny), Twelfth Night (Feste), Songs for a New World (Woman 1), and the U.S. premiere of Stalking John Barrowman (Julie). Love always to Bill.
Steven Guire Knight is delighted to return after previous appearances in 10 in 10: 2017; A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup; Memphis; and Death Takes a Holiday. South Bay audiences have also seen him at Cabrillo Stage (Urinetown, Oliver!, Lunch, Anything Goes); Jewel Theatre (Enter the Guardsman); and South Bay Musical Theatre (Mame, Peter and the Starcatcher). Past choral experiences include the Rose Ensemble (founding member), and touring with the Dale Warland Singers.
Samantha Noeth Lewis is excited to return to Tabard after appearing last season in Holiday at the Savoy! She recently was featured in her school’s production of City of Angels (Stine) and on episode nine of Inside California Education entitled “Growing California’s Artists.” In addition to performing in shows, Samantha loves to tap dance and play piano. She would like to thank her parents for supporting her plan to pursue a B.F.A degree in college.
Grace Peng is delighted to be back swinging in jazz! She has performed with award-winning a cappella jazz groups, placing first in the Reno and Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festivals, and appearing recently in WVLO Musical Theatre’s Bullets Over Broadway and Sister Act. While not salsa-ing the night away as a Zumba instructor, she cherishes spending time with friends and family. Thanks to Stony, Lucas, Miles, Chloe, Ollie and the Fan tribe for all their love and support!
Will Perez is delighted to return for his fourth Tabard show. He most recently appeared as Father Dupin in South Bay Musical Theatre’s TBA-nominated The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Other favorites include City of Angels (Angel City Four) and Forever Plaid (Sparky) at South Bay, The World Goes Round at Tabard, and Smokey Joe’s Café at Los Altos Stage. By day Will manages the clinical/surgical department of a high-volume Lasik practice. Happy Holidays to all!
Susan Tonkin is happy to return to the Tabard stage, having appeared as Snooksy/Georgia/Amelia/Baseball Hattie earlier this season in Another Roll of the Dice. Other roles she’s portrayed include Princess Puffer in The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Diablo Valley College, Alice Beineke in The Addams Family at Stage 1, and Guenevere in Camelot and Lily St. Regis in Annie at Douglas Morrisson Theatre. Susan lives in Pleasanton with her husband and her two adorable kids.

Some of her favorites are Tabard’s productions of Death Takes a Holiday, Homeward Bound, Gifts of the Magi, and Stompin’ at the Savoy. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director, and the costume designer for DanCyn Studio’s competitive dance team for 15 years.
Gus Kambeitz (Music Director) is currently teaching music at Caroline Davis Intermediate School in San Jose, where he graduated in 1977! His prior teaching experience includes 15 years at West Valley College, five years at Santa Teresa High School, two years at Washington State University, and two years at Rancho Middle School in Milpitas. He is also the director of Nineteen Jazz Orchestra and co-created and music-directed Tabard’s original Stompin’ at the Savoy and The Duke, the Count, and Me.
Andre Leben (Light Board Operator) is an actor and substitute teacher from Campbell, California. When not teaching, Andre is auditioning for commercial, TV, and film in San Francisco and running after-school programs with Imagineerz in the Palo Alto area. Andre received acting training at C.S.U. Long Beach and has worked with theater professionals such as Luke Yankee, Hugh O’Gorman, Alexandra Billings, Amy Chafee, and Joanne Gordon. Andre’s returns after being part of the cast for The Explorers Club.
Robert Lewis (Stage Manager, Sound Board) designed the sound for Tabard’s Evelyn in Purgatory, after stage-managing Death Takes A Holiday, Homeward Bound, and Holiday at the Savoy and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last five seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now nearing three decades as a resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant.
Rover Spotts (Lighting Designer) returns after tech-directing Adrift in Macao and lighting Evelyn in Purgatory; Holiday at the Savoy; Crowns; I Do! I Do!; Homeward Bound; The Best Christmas Pageant Ever; The Immigrant; and Starting Here, Starting Now. During the day he is a systems and network engineer at a number of independent schools. He is also the resident technical director and set designer for Lyric Theater and has worked as a designer for Sunnyvale Community Players, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros, and others.
Irene Trapp (Director, Vocal Director) has performed in the Bay Area for over 40 years as a musician, studio singer, voiceover actor, and on-stage actor. Favorite shows include the King and I with American Musical Theatre(Lady Thiang), Flower Drum Song at West Valley Light Opera (Madame Liang), I Do! I Do! at Tabard Theatre (Agnes), and most recently Holiday at the Savoy at Tabard in 2017. Uptown Holiday Swing is her second production as director for Tabard. Experience infinite possibilities. Tabard.
