A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso
In this weekend’s readings the topic is the resurrection. At Mass when we pray the Creed we say we “believe in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” Clearly the widow and the seven sons, in the first reading, believed in the resurrection and life in God, otherwise they would not have suffered as they did. The second son,”…the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever…” Yet there were Jews in Christ’s time who did not believe in the resurrection. These were the high priests and rulers — the Sadducees. [the way to remember it is that they did not believe in the resurrection and that is why they are “sad, you see?”] And they should be sad. It would be a life of no hope. They followed the law to the letter but that’s it. Nothing to look forward to. That is sad. There are people like that today. I’m sure you know some and they may even say they are Christian — “Christian Sadducees”. In the Gospel they bring up an absurd example to try to reduce belief in the resurrection to something absurd in its turn. But listen to Jesus’ answer: marriage is God’s plan for this world, for our world. One man and one woman, living a life of fidelity and exclusivity for life, and accepting children from God. In this state of life they are a sign of Christ’s love for the Church and beacon to us all. In the next life there is pure contentment, consolation, joy. We, the Church will be with Christ. The sign of marriage will no longer be needed. Meanwhile here on earth we strive to be beacons of God’s love in the world. Ideally, the family, as God planned it, is this beacon based on faith, filled with hope and showing God’s love. As Pope Francis said, the family is like a field hospital for bruised egos, hurt feelings, shattered hopes, broken dreams. It is the first and best school; and a sure way to heaven. We pray for the graces to bring the Kingdom as best we can to our little church which is the family. With St Paul we pray the Lord will strengthen and guard our families from the evil one. This week is the week of prayer for vocations. Vocations to the priesthood and religious life do not drop from heaven. Priests and religious are born in families. They come from the people and are as wounded as anybody else. By listening to God’s calling and responding, it is a way of bringing the Kingdom alive here on earth for us by bringing Christ’s healing to us personally. The wounded healer, patched up in the family and made whole by Christ to bring us all closer to Him. With St Paul we pray that the Lord will direct our hearts to the love of God and the endurance of Christ and the courage to say yes to his call.
Parish Intention of the Month
As we remember the souls of the departed, may our com-munity bring comfort and offer emotional and spiritual support to those who have suffered the loss of a loved
one.
A note from Msgr. Richard Behl, Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies, Diocese of Metuchen: My sincere thanks to you and your parishioners for your hospitality and kindness to Br. Robert Ziobro during his visit to St. James the Less Church. Your parish gift of $2,691 to the 2016 Diocesan Sharing Plan will be of help to the increasing number of missionaries who call Metuchen “home”. May our Lord reward you and your parishioners.
