What do localfundraising groups do?

Local fundraising groups act as the face of HavensHospices in their local communities, promotingthe work of the charity, organising fundraisingevents and encouraging other local people tofundraise. This year, the charity’s eight communityfundraising groups have raised almost £30,000 forthe charity, all through organising their ownevents.

Hilary added, “Whether you have a few hoursspare on the weekend or perhaps just a couple ofhours a month, there are plenty of opportunitiesfor you to get involved. This could mean helpingto promote our campaigns or organising or vol-unteering at a local fundraising event.”

Local groups are given the power to shape theway they want to fundraise in their communitieswhilst receiving expert support and advice fromthe charity right the way through the year.

Tony Cheek, who is part of the ‘Friends of The Hospices’ fundraising group said, “One week youmight be organising a street collection, then thenext holding a black tie event. It’s completely upto us what kind of events we want to hold. It couldbe something new every week, which is whatmakes it so exciting.”

Join a Local Fundraising Groupo you have bounds of energy, enjoyworking as a part of an enthusiastic

team and have a little time to spare? Do you wantto help make a difference to people’s lives in yourlocal community? If yes, than you could be a greatasset to a Havens Hospices local fundraisinggroup. Local fundraising groups are teams ofpeople who donate their time to organisingevents and activities from coffee mornings tosponsored bike rides, all to raise funds for Essexbased charity.

Who are Havens Hospices?Havens Hospices is a registered charity thatincorporates Fair Havens Hospice and LittleHavens Hospice. Both hospices offer respite andcare for adults and children with life-limitingillnesses. When a family has been told there’s nocure for their loved one’s illness, the hospices arethere to make the journey as comfortable aspossible, controlling pain and medication andallowing family to spend quality time together inthe hospice or in the comfort of their own homes.

Hilary Metcalfe, Community Fundraiser fromHavens Hospices said, “We must raise over £100,00each week to be there for everyone who needs us.We do not charge a penny for our care, whichmeans the hospices simply could not exist with-out supporters like local fundraising groups, whodonate their time and effort so generously.”

Havens Hospices can only exist because of people like those in local fundraising groups. Byjoining a group, you’d be a part of raising vitalfunds for the charity and helping them to fulfiltheir mission of ‘making every day count’ for thepeople they care for.

To join...If you’re interested in joining a fundraising groupfor Havens Hospices in your area or would like tofind out more information, please get in touchwith Hilary on 07891 514187 or [email protected].

Alternatively, take a look at what some of ourfundraising groups have been up to atwww.havenshospices.org.uk or join us on Facebook or Twitter.

As well as organising their own events, fundraising groups also support organised eventsin their community.

Why join?Joining a local fundraising group can be a reallyexciting experience and a great way to have a lotof fun whilst raising money for local families inneed of care.

Hilary Metcalfe says, “What’s so fantastic aboutlocal fundraising groups is that you meet peoplefrom all walks of life, all joining together with thesame goal; to raise vital funds for local families inneed of care and support. You might be creative, good with numbers or a confident public speaker, whatever it is, every person can bring somethingunique to the team.”

Tony Cheek, who’s been a member of localfundraising group ‘Friends of Havens Hospices’ for4 years says, “I’d recommend joining a group toanyone who wants to make friends and get involved with the local community. We have a lotof fun and it’s made all the better knowing thatevery penny we raise is going to care for peoplewho need the love and support Havens Hospicesprovides. Since our group formed, we’ve raisedover £41,000 for the charity, which we’re all veryproud of.”

pinning can break brittle chemo curls. Put away yourhair straighteners, just for now, as the heat can burnyour sore scalp.

Styling products that offer a light hold are ideal, as theyare easy to wash out and won't make your hair looksynthetic. Go for water-based products whenever youcan find them because they are kind and healthy for your hair, and the environment!

Hair that is shorter than three inches is very difficult tostyle and manage so your scalp is still tender, pleasewait until it recovers and then consult your hairdresserfor help with any colour or permanent wavetreatments.

Make sure you get the ends of your hair trimmedevery month until your locks returns to their normaltexture. In 6-12months, most of your chemo curls willbe gone and you can try some new and exciting hair-styles with your short hair. And be proud of it – yournew hair is a sign of your bravery and determinationin surviving cancer. It really is your crowning glory.

y column this month is dedicated to Oraclereader Maggi Hobbs from Great Wakering

who recently wrote to me saying “Could you do acolumn on the plight of us post chemotherapy girls (andguys) – we could do with your advice!”

So Maggi, this is especially for you and other ladies andgents in your position.

The loss of your crowning glory is, sadly, a common sideeffect of chemotherapy. The treatment also affects hairregrowth, as the drugs involved attack the roots of yourhair and its pigment. Towards the end of treatment yourhair will start to come back, but when your locks doreturn, their texture and colour may be very different toyour original hair. Patients may experience kinky, curly, coarse, or even fine ‘baby’ hair. We like to call this ChemoCurls.

Your new hair can look and feel like a really bad perm, soit makes sense to treat it that way. Use a very mildshampoo, such as baby shampoo or products for dry ordamaged hair. When shampooing your chemo curls, massage your scalp to increase circulation to your rootsand remove any dry, flaky skin. Avoid using very hot waterbecause your scalp may be tender. After your shampoo, put on a leave-in conditioner for fine or limp hair.

Dry your hair gently by patting it with a thick, absorbenttowel, or use a low heat setting on your hair dryer. Styleyour new hair gently - vigorous brushing, combing and

Money Matters

earlier you make a start, the easier it is tocreate the lifestyle you want. And in doingso, take into account that pensions stillrepresent the best option when investing forretirement.

Whatever choices you make, do take actionnow. We are living to a greater age andretirement is going to last longer in thefuture. As a result, it is essential to save more. The decisions you make today will help determine the standard of living likely to beenjoyed in retirement. But the longer youleave it to take action, the more expensive itwill be to catch up.

Whatever your stage of life, it is important toreceive expert and professional advice onyour pension requirements. The role of aspecialist retirement planning adviser is tohelp you understand the need to approachretirement planning as soon as possible andto gain a better understanding of thevarious opportunities available.

ow does the idea of a holidaylasting perhaps 20 or 30 years

sound? No more work, just a permanentbreak, pleasing yourself what you do everyday for the rest of your life.

It sounds very enticing – and it’s calledretirement. The only snag, of course, is thatyou have to pay for it in advance. And theearlier you start paying for it, the better yourlifestyle is going to be when you finally giveup going to work.

If you don’t, you are running a serious risk ofoutliving your savings once you havestopped working.

So how much are you going to need to fundthis long-lasting holiday? The simplest wayto find out is to work out your magicnumber. This helps you calculate how muchyour pension fund should be to give you theretirement income you want.

By taking into account all your likely livingcosts, calculate how much annual incomeyou think you might need if you were toretire at the age of 65, allowing for inflation. Multiply this figure by 25 and this gives youyour magic number – the retirement fundyou will need based on current annuity rates.

The next important step is to start planningfor your retirement – and to do so now. The

t pays to do your homework when itcomes to choosing a nursery. This is

where children will take those first steps awayfrom home and towards independence and agood nursery will teach children the social andlife skills to help them through their early years.

Numbers are a factor. The ideal setting shouldlimit numbers so that children don’t feeloverwhelmed but at the same time, be bigenough to provide social interaction and buildconfidence. At Thorpe Hall, our facilities are di-vided into two sections – a pre-nursery for girlsand boys of 2 and 3 years old and a nurserywhere the children are 3 and 4 years old. With amaximum of 8 children in one class and 16 in theother, we can provide the individual attentionchildren need to feel happy and secure.

Child’s PlayThe nursery environment is also key. Ourarchitect-designed and custom-built roomsprovide the space and freedom to learneffectively through play. Children also enjoy oursuperb outdoor classroom throughout the dayand explore the woodland, on the edge of our10-acre site, in weekly Forest School sessions.

had shops in Benfleet, Woodgrange Drive, ThorpeBay and latterly Barling. I would class myself as anold fashioned style or artisan butcher. The meat isprepared through minimum use of cleavers orsaws but by utilising the natural seams andmuscles as nature intended.

Is there a call for anold fashioned butcher?

I have seen the role of the butcher change. Thedays of meat hanging on show with sawdust onthe floors are thankfully long gone. Howeversupermarkets are increasingly stocking foreignmeat cut to set sizes with little room for alteration.

he Butcher of Barling, Philip Splett hasdecided to reopen his shop to the public.

Here we ask why.

What made you reopen Philip?

Well I originally decided to retire on the 1st January2012 after working in the butchery business forover 60 years. Although the shop was not open Iwas still supplying my famous Barling Beautiessausages to a few local pubs and my existing clientswere ordering meat from me on a regular basis.Everywhere I went I bumped into customers ofmine who bemoaned the fact that I had closed.Butchery is in my blood and I made a decision toreopen the shop again to existing and newcustomers from November.

What is your experience?

Splett Family Butchers has been in existence since1950 when my father opened his shop in London’sLeather Lane. I helped my father in his shop andwent to Smithfield learning as much about themeat trade as I could. I was fortunate to train as aMaster Butcher under an expert who providedmeat to the Royal Family. After I qualified I took overfrom my father and moved down to Southend and

particularly the Barling Beauties and regularly havemany varieties in stock. Cheeses are from theSnowdonia Cheese Company, Suffolk naturalhams, Haggis and the famous Stornoway blackpuddings. For Christmas we are again stocking hotsmoked Salar salmon from the Isle of South Uist.

Do you have anything toentice us with?

As an opening offer in November I am providingmy unique chicken parcel, which is boned chickenstuffed with my own recipe filling. Plus a VintageMature Cheddar Snowdonia Cheese truckle at abargain price of £9.95 (as featured in the mainphoto). Please feel free to call by and say hallo orvisit me on my website and join the mailing list toreceive regular offers. The website is www.philipsplett.com. Orders can be placed byemail through the website or call 216062 or text07768972579.

I look forward to welcoming you all existing andnew customers to Burtons Farm Shop, BarlingRoad, Barling Magna, SS3 0LZ.

The service I provide gives advice on what cut isbest for whichever dish is being cooked andproducing that cut to meet the budget or sizerequired. I pride myself on being able to makecustomers feel at ease and enjoy their shoppingexperience. There is also a number of TV chefs whoare using types and cuts of meat, such as venison, which can only be sourced from quality butchers.

Where is your meat sourced?

I have my own experienced buyer on Smithfieldwho selects meat to my specification. Smithfield isstill the UK’s premier meat market. I stock AberdeenAngus Scotch Beef, Saltmarsh reared Lamb and rarebread pork. Fresh poultry come from Suffolk,Norfolk and local farms. All the meat is British andis fresh when delivered and allowed to hang toprovide the best possible taste and texture. I aim toprovide the best quality products when in season ataffordable prices. Certainly there is a markeddifference in flavour for instance when Beef isallowed to age naturally.

What can you provide us with?

The simple answer is anything providing enoughnotice is given. All types of meat, offal and game. Iam happy to take bulk orders where for instancehalf a pig or lamb can be bought and the customercan specify what types of joints or chops they want.I am currently taking orders for Christmas for localfresh turkeys and geese. These can be on the bone, crowns or boned and rolled. There is no additionalcost to the customer in having this workundertaken, it is all part of my service. I produce myown bacon which is cured in the old fashioned wayand has a taste unlike anything bought in thesupermarkets. I am famous for my sausages,

ollowing on from the last issue it seemspeople simply don’t learn by their mis-

takes.

I was recently able to help a lady in the finalstages of clearing a property which hadobviously had some very lovely things in it. Shebegan by telling me that the family had done aboot sale with the first things they had sortedout and had raised about £300, which shefound very exciting. Sadly the first item shementioned, that they had sold, would haveraised more than that in auction on its own sogoodness knows what else went with it.

Following on from that they had seen an ad inthe local paper about a visiting buyer, fromBrighton she thought, who was hiring a roomin a hotel for the day and offering a valuationand buying service. Not content with what shehad sold at the boot sale she had then sold asignificant amount of jewellery, including agent’s 18 carat gold wrist watch and a ladiesdiamond watch to him for the value of thescrap metal.

As I have mentioned previously, even if suchpeople are paying full price for the metal, andmost are not, items with stones, watches anddecorative pieces will usually command morein auction and leave the sellers better off evenafter commission.

Thankfully her neighbour got wind of all of thisand pointed her in our direction so we have

been able to prevent some more majormistakes as there is a lot still so be sold. Goodness only knows what she and thefamily lost by not taking advice earlier. This iswhy most responsible solicitors will advise theirclients to seek professional help, of the kind weoffer, before disposing of anything from anestate.

We offer free valuations every day and arehappy to check through less valuable items insearch of the real goodies!

ince winning the X Factor back in 2010,Essex lad Matt Cardle has done a full

circle. The 29-year-old has a platinum-sellingdebut album, “Letters”, changed record companies, but “The Fire”, his second album outon the 29th October on So What? Recordings, isa much more honest affair.

“The Fire” see’s Cardle playing most of the instruments and even producing the album, “Itwas much nicer being in control as much as Iwas, this was how I wrote and produced all of myalbums before the X Factor, so I didn’t feel out ofmy comfort zone, it was just a very naturalprocess. Across the board, it’s gone absolutelyfantastically,”

Matt draws on a lot of his personal expericnesover the past couple of years for his material, he explained: “It’s prominently about the break-upof my relationship earlier this year. It was toughand I was going through all that whilst I was writing the album. That being said, the album’svery upbeat and very uplifting.”

While there’s a particular sound for X factor winners, “The Fire” turns up the guitars takingMatt back to the Essex rock bands he played inbefore the competition ”The change in sound isalso similar to why the looks changed as I’m getting closer to myself and getting back to

what I do and what I’ve always done. Just everything’s a bit more honest really.”“It’s Only Love” will be the first single to be released from the album. Talking about thechoice, he said: “I wanted to come back out with something really upbeat and something reallydriving. I just thought it was a great choice forthe first single.

Prior to the album’s release, Cardle will embarkon a short UK tour, which begins at the Birmingham Institute on October 21st, beforefinishing with an album launch show at TheScala in London on the 23rd.

“I’m excited and nervous at the same time! But Ijust cannot wait to get back on stage with theband and see how the songs translate on stagelive,” said Cardle.

London based pop band LAWSON grafted hardfor 4 years doing the pub and club circuit beforetheir big break supporting The Wanted last year.Since then, they’ve sold out their own tours andgained two top 5 singles.

Their debut LP ‘Chapman Square’ certainly livesup to expectations. Stand out tracks include‘Learn To Love Again’ and ‘Gone’ plus brand newsingle ‘Standing In The Dark’.

biochemistry (or “metabolic type”) of anyindividual. Different foods have the power tostrengthen or weaken metabolic imbalances, soyou need to know which foods willimprove how you feel, and which will make youfeel worse.

Externally, we have different hair and skin colours, textures and different bone structures, builds andpersonalities. We are all different internally too, that means we all process and use foods andnutrients differently.

You really don’t need to understand all of thescience behind metabolic typing in order to reapthe health benefits for yourself. These includeincreased energy and mental clarity, freedomfrom cravings and hunger between meals, improved digestion and immunity, improvedsports performance, decreased fatigue, anxietyand depression.

You can find out more and discover your type byvisiting www.metabolictyping.co.uk

he South Beach Diet, the GL Diet, the GIDiet, the No-Diet Diet, the Atkins Diet, the

Zone Diet, even the Cabbage Soup Diet ….theseare amongst over 30,000 titles I found when Isearched the word ‘diet’ in the book section ofAmazon!

One day we read that a diet high in protein andfat and low in carbohydrate will help us shedexcess weight, increase our vitality and addressdisease. The next day we hear another expertsaying that a low fat, high carbohydrate diet willprevent heart disease and help us to lose weight!Who is right? In a sense they both are.

We are all as unique as our fingerprints - so whywould we think that there is a single diet thatworks for us all? If such a diet worked, then itwould have been discovered a long time ago.

I follow - and heartily recommend - MetabolicTyping. This is a nutritional system thatanyone can use to customise their diet to meettheir body's unique individual needs. It is basedon the idea that there is no single, universal diet that is right for everyone.

Whilst some foods are unhealthy for all of us,there are also some healthy foods that may beunhealthy for some people. The healthbenefits of any food is dependent upon thestimulatory, or inhibitory effects on the

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas

his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Post-16 SuccessAt Shoeburyness!

ver the past three years we have seensome impressive developments in our

Post-16 provision here at Shoeburyness HighSchool.

The number of students choosingShoeburyness to carry on their education afterGCSEs has risen each year and is now at an unprecedented level of almost 300, including60 students from other schools. So why isShoeburyness becoming the place of choicefor so many of our local students who wish tocontinue their education?

Excellent Results

As our numbers have been rising, our resultshave been improving too. We now have animpressive 97.4% pass rate at A-level and anaverage point score of over 600 for each student.

University Success

Against the national trend, at Shoeburynesswe are sending more and more successful applicants to University every year.

Great Facilities

Our Year 12 and 13 students enjoy the beststudy facilities and largest exclusive areas inthe school in which to work. Computer suitesdedicated to Post-16 students are available

O throughout the day, as are our excellent canteen facilities and fitness suite.

Personalised Pathways

Not all students are the same and here atShoeburyness we provide different Pathwaysto cater for their different needs. These Pathways are designed to help students getthe most out of their education and providethat crucial stepping stone to employment orfurther education.

A Wider Choice

We have over 40 different courses to choosefrom in our Post-16 offer at Shoeburyness, ranging from traditional A-level subjects, tomore creative and vocational courses in BTEC.There really is something for everyone and, ifyou haven’t quite managed to achieve that Cgrade in English or Maths GCSE, we also offerthe opportunity to study for these alongsideyour other choices.

An Enriching Experience

As well as the academic choices studentsmake, we also offer an exciting Enrichmentprogramme to widen their experiencesthrough Sports, Performing Arts, Stage Make-up, Photography and Film Editingcourses.

Basketball Academy

This year, Shoeburyness High School becameone of only a small handful of accredited Basketball Academies. This had led to a number of students joining us from far andwide to enjoy expert coaching and the opportunity to compete at a national level inthe sport, alongside their academic studies.

We Care a Lot!

A number of students find that the impersonalapproach and independence required at college simply does not suit and many returnafter a short time there. Here at Shoeburynesswe have exceptional pastoral care and academic support which continues through-out Years 12 and 13, making us a true 11 – 19school.

Come and See!

However, don’t take our word for it; come andsee for yourself! On Thursday 8 November wehave our Post-16 Information Evening from7:00pm – 9:00pm in the Singleton Centre in theschool.
