NOVEMBER
2017
VOLUME 17 ISSUE 11
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.’ –
Psalm 118:24
Blessings to you all!
It is so wonderful to be back at Peace after my time at home with Theo.
I very much enjoyed getting to spend those first couple months with my son,
but I’m also excited to return to Peace (with Theo) to resume our ministry to-
gether.
In November the Adult Sunday school class will be doing a series on a
book titled, “Encountering God in Tyrannical Texts.” Each week we will look
at a passage in scripture that is what we might call “difficult” to understand in
light of a God who loves all God’s children unconditionally. The series fo-
cuses on texts that are disparaging of women. We will read and discuss what
these biblical passages mean for us as Christians today. Our mid-week morn-
ing bible study will resume meeting at 11am on Thursdays and we will start a
series looking at the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles and their tandem
history telling. Beer and Bible will meet on Thursdays at 6pm at O’Bryan’s up
until Thanksgiving during the month of November. We will be discussing cur-
rent events- what it means to be a Christian in our society right now. I have
yet to come up with a jazzy title for that series but it should be some very good
conversation. Differing opinions are expected, but we always keep at the fore-
front that we are brothers and sisters in Christ. Confirmation and youth group
will resume as well. Our youth will be discussing the upcoming trip to Huston
in June for the ELCA’s Youth Gathering as well as fundraising ideas after ser-
vice on November 19th.
It may take me a little bit to fully get back in the swing of things. But
rest assured I’m excited to do so. Happy November everyone! Advent will be
here before you know it!
May the peace of Christ, which passes all understanding guide your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

THRIVENT FINANCIAL
Thrivent is a member-owned not-for-profit insurance and financial services organization, which is tax exempt,
but must distribute equivalent funds for charitable purposes. Members make choices in the ways that these
funds are spent. All Thrivent policy holders have two kinds of opportunities to make a difference in people’s
lives in and through your congregation and community.
THRIVENT CHOICE lets you give funds directly to your congregation or other church related agencies
such as Bible camps, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Social Services, church colleges, etc. Each time you pay
a premium to Thrivent a portion is set aside for you to direct where you choose to have it sent. This should be
done at least once a year.
THRIVENT ACTION TEAMS let you identify a need or concern, put together a team, and receive a
$250 gift card from Thrivent to help accomplish your project. You can do this twice each year.
If you are a Thrivent policy holder, please identify yourself to us, especially if you have not taken ad-
vantage of either or both of these, and you want help doing them. Contact Pastor John or Doris Wanamaker
(419-281-9012) or Dan Bishop (419-589-4481) and we can help walk you through the steps to get started or
suggest ways to take make use of these financial resources.

Jesus looked up at his disciples and called them "blessed," these poor, hungry, tear-stained follow-
ers of his. Were they able to hear in these words of blessing the ancient story of God's salvation
among them?
The words of promise spoken by God to Abraham and Sarah, that God would bring them into a
new land and that their descendants would number among the stars. Blessed. Moses, barefoot and
on his knees, sent to lead the people to freedom. Blessed. The angel's announcement to Mary that
she would bear a child named Jesus. Blessed. The voice spoken over Jesus as he rose out of the
River Jordan, "You are my son, the Beloved . . . ." Blessed. Jesus' call to the disciples at the sea-
shore, "Follow me." Blessed. And even today, the promise-laden waters of baptism that wash over
naked skin as gentle hands rest on the crown of the head: "Pour out your Holy Spirit . . . ." Blessed.
The gathered community for which bread is broken and wine is poured, "This cup of the new cove-
nant . . . ." Blessed.
Did those blessed disciples hear this ancient and future story of God's salvation as Jesus looked up
to them and spoke?
The blessed of God are the saints of God. And the saints of God live in this story of blessing. But it
doesn't stop there. This blessing also shakes the world to the foundations. "Love your enemies, do
good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you" (Luke 6:27-
28). These teachings are not just demanding; they call us to become entirely different people from
who we are. Where do we start? We start by rejoicing in God's blessing. And we let the God who
has called us and blessed us lead us in living the life of the children of God. Such is the blessed
journey of all God's saints.
We will celebrate All Saints Sunday on November 5th with remembering all those Saints in
our congregation who have passed away this past year:
Doris Robison, Robert Winters, James Daniels,
Marjorie Feth, Judith Puster, Nova Skidmore, Irene Paull
