Hi and welcome to this month’s newsletter. Things seem to be ticking along nicely with in the club. We had a good working bee at the lodge in Kingston with 9 people in attendance. We had 47 or so people on a bus trip to look at some pretty impressive cars down Dacre way. November’s executive meeting was combined with the executive Xmas dinner in Riverton. We have the Xmas BBQ at Pryde’s Pond coming up with many thanks to Peter Salmon who put a lot of time in organising this. Please support this event. We are also putting a few boats in the Xmas Parade next month. As there will not be another newsletter until next year, myself and the committee would like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Happy boating! Until next time, Tony McDowall GBC 795

Secretary Notes: The November Executive meeting was an absolute shambles. This was probably due to the meeting running concurrently with the Commodore's Executive Mystery Bus trip which is a junket for executive members usually in November or December. We went to the Beach House Restaurant in Riverton and had the meeting while we waited for our mains to ar-rive. Part of the problem with the meeting was that the members had been well lubricated on the bus on the way down so it was' pretty much a happy shouting match. Apart from the Finances which aren't too bad at present, the main discussion was to do with the Lodge. It continues to be a main attraction of new members, and sometimes these are mainly to acquire the venue for a large event. In most cases the Lodge can handle a short term influx of people but since the sewage system is a septic tank and the water sup-ply is a roof fed 5000 tank it wouldn't take much to stretch the facilities. After discussion it was decided to accept the members application to join the club but decline the book-ing. The decision was not unanimous and could be revisited at a later date when executive is more sober. The mains arrived and were devoured, and it was an excellent meal. We had a tiki tour around Riverton to see Tony's new holiday mansion before returning home. Alcoholic consumption meant most members were unfit to drive so the bus had to deliver them to the door (Jenkins' Catch-a-bus). It was a great night out thanks to Tony and especially to Matt who was a reluctant sober driver after there were no other offers to drive the bus.

Secretary Notes: There are two coming events we need to consider here. The first is the Christmas Barbeque now on Friday 9th Decem-ber. To be held again at Pryde’s Lake, hopefully it will be a repeat of last year with plenty to keep the kids entertained. The site is looking excellent as I have been keeping it mown and the water is quite warm, excellent for swim-ming. See page further on for full details. On Sunday 10th December is the Santa Parade start-ing at 12am. We have registered to attend and need some discussion to organise five or six boats. So far I have Mi-chael Hoods vintage runabout, my Bang Gunly, one of the Firebugs (towed by a ride on mower I think). We have a flashy race boat, something to tow a single ski, and another to “tow/catch” a radio control trout. Need lots of kids in their Life Jackets plus more. Phone me on 0272089031 or 032089609 if you can help. We probably need to have a meeting prior to plan it. Thadldofornow Pete Salmond

So that's another year of White baiting gone by. We went over for the last two weeks mainly to take the stands down but also put the nets in when ever we could. First two days were great warm and sunny but come the Thursday it started to rain and the river came up [again]. Just as our friends got there the next two days with no fishing, then on Monday we put the small pot net in and got a feed. On Tuesday morning things looked a lot better so we put in two stand nets and one pot. And down it came again at the rate of an inch an hour for a while. Had to pull the nets out about 4pm as it would be full tide. Went over to Maree’s net and tried to lift it but needed a bit of a hand, so we cleared it [10k] and then put it back in, then went over to Bev’s net on the other side of the river and took it out. Only I could not move it. Had to unload it standing in the water up to my knees with three buckets. Put that back in and way back over to Stephens net and took it out then back to Maree’s and pulled it out too. What a performance Bev [46k] Maree [17k] Stephen [8k] I think we might have got a damn good haul! Had to wait 21 years for it but it was worth it. Next day my nephew from Timaru came down, so all nets back and another 10k went sailing of to Timaru. After that things went a bit quiet so we got on and took the stands down. Over all it was just an average year for the our catch rate. We were lucky, but a lot of the people had gone home so no nets in front of ours. The day of our big catch we had 4.5 inches of rain When we get a catch like that it takes a day to catch up checking nets and stands out for damage. The pot net got a bit stretched and hardly fits back in the frame. The big new lift up works good and it was real good at the end to just press the button and the whole thing comes up out of the water, defiantly an improvement. So we left with a very good memory of 2017. All was cleaned up and stored away for next season, with just a few gas bottles left to fill and a bit more Balfour coal to bring over for the fire. Good wishes to you all and hope you don’t mind reading our little stories. Henry and Bev Bennett.

Balfour Scouts kicked off the season for the Firebugs on Friday 11th November and I wasn't able to make it but the night went off well due to a newly discovered gun yachty by the name of Jordan Kearny who helped Paul Bennet on the night. He is in the Gore Model Aircraft Club and quite by chance I discovered Jordan had owned and raced yachts as a kid (not that long ago ).We have had a few evenings in perfect conditions and done a little bit of racing. Kearny always picks the black boat as it is the fastest and he always wins. The yachts are to be based at the Lake for the foreseeable future and are available for use of kids and grupps. I have modified the tillers and am presently making simple seats that will allow older sailors to sit in the boat without getting cramp. Poppy the pickup boat is proving to be perfect for the pur-pose but an incident on Thursday night where a yacht capsized and the crew member couldn't get back on showed that when you have a dead weight in the water it is very hard to pull them on board the safety boat. Garry is getting us a fold down ladder to be attached to the transom which should alleviate the problem in the future . The water in the lake is quite warm so consequently there is quite a bit of weed. We have had a couple of working bees to remove some of the weed but its a bit like shovelling shit up hill so we will probably have to put up with it. An old grass seethe would be good but I gave mine away last year and haven't been able to find another. Work in progress. People wishing to use the yachts need to contact me as the gate is locked most of the time. There us a fee of $25 for use of the lake, which goes into a fund for future improvements. Phone me on 0272089031 if you want to use the boats

Special thanks to Kevin Ryan (Harrisons Supply), Farmlands, Ravensdown & Shooters World for their generous donations. We hope all the fisher-man will support them. Saturday was a perfect day with a calm lake and sunshine. We headed up the lake to the Eglinton River and fished back. Some good trout were caught but not good enough to win. We had the company of Garths boat with Wendy, Mike and two of our great grandchildren Olivia & Ross as his crew. It was good to see some of our regular supporters on the lake. Thanks to the ones that turned up for the weigh in and the BBQ, it’s great to have your support. Winner – Heaviest fish Rachel Ayson 1.80kg it was a lovely rainbow and very well presented. 2nd – Mike Key 1.45kg 3rd – Paul Waller 1.35kg 4th – Nigel Copland & Len both 1.30kg Children’s Prize Olivia .90kg and close behind Ross .70kg both good looking trout. Thanks for coming G.B.C 127

On the 28th October we had 9 keen people head up to

Kingston to trim some trees, some at ground level, the

front shrubs and trees had a good haircut and what

trees that weren’t cut up for firewood got taken away

in the 6 or 7 trailer loads to the dump.

The wood supply was topped up again and a general

tidy up done.

Thanks Pete for letting me break his ride on mower

(opps).

New curtain tracks and curtains were hung thanks to

new member and neighbour lee for her help. Some

things do require a woman’s helping hand.

The shed at the back had 50 odd years of hoarding in it

that got a real good clean out. After all the work was

complete 4 of us stayed on for the night and somehow

my boat was hooked on to my truck so we headed out

and landed a few fish at about 4pm and home some-

time after 9pm. It was a really good relaxing way to

end the day.

Thanks to the following members who came up and

helped.

Paul Clarkson, Peter Salmon, Mark Reid, Ivan van de

Water, Trevor Heaps, Dave McFadzien, Rae Graham,

Trevor Cross and Lee from next door.

Leaving Gore at 6pm our club had a bus full of members and some guests for an evening to Dacre to view an extensive car collection of GT Ford Falcons. This shed/museum of high quality cars belongs to Roger and Diane White who kindly allowed our club to see their private collection displayed in a converted dairy shed. Some of the cars are extremely rare and this of course makes them valuable so it really is a privilege to see them. They have been collecting for many years and still are on the lookout for these increasingly hard to find cars. They ranged from the earliest 1966 XR right through to the very last of the GT Falcons with one of every model on dis-play. The quality and presentation was very high and there was also a Mad Max Interceptor replica that Roger started up for us that sounded fantastic. 47 Boaties and friends enjoyed this display on a beautiful sum-mers night so it was a good turnout for the club and good to see so many people relaxed and learning about a very interesting subject dear to the hearts of some of our members. Many a dis-cussion on which was their favourite and which one or ones they would like in their garage was held. For me it was the gold (funny that) XR that was totally original and for looked perfect. On the way home Commodore Tony pulled out of the bag a clincher that topped the night off perfectly. He arranged a stop at the Pioneer Tavern in Edendale where at $5 a head the pub put on large trays of nibbles that disappeared quickly washed down with a few quiet ales. Back in Gore about 10pm after an excellent club night out. Ivan van de Water

Ingredients: 800g-1kg Quality Mark lamb ribs Marinade ¼ cup oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 ½ tablespoons tomato paste 2 sticks fresh rosemary leaves, roughly chopped ¼ cup fresh thyme leaves, chopped ½ cup fresh mint leaves, chopped 1 tablespoon honey 1 teaspoon paprika Zest of 2 lemons Pinch of chilli flakes Method: Mix all the marinade ingredients in a small bowl to com-bine. Place the lamb ribs in a reseal able bag or plastic con-tainer and add the marinade, mixing well to coat then cover. Leave to marinate for at least an hour or overnight in the fridge. Remove the ribs from the fridge at least 30 minutes before cooking and season. Preheat a barbecue grill or fry-ing pan to a medium-high heat. Add the ribs and cook until browned and crunchy on all sides – around 15-20 minutes. If you have single ribs they will only take about 10-15 minutes.
