Part 1 November’s Issue American Diabetes Month is a time to raise awareness of diabetes prevention and control. In the United States, more than 25 million people are living with diabetes and 79 million more are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Over time, if it’s not controlled, type 2 diabetes can cause serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and blindness. You may be at risk for type 2 diabetes if you: Are age 45 or older Are overweight Have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes Are African American, Hispanic or Latino American, American Indian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander Have had diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) Have had a baby with a birth weight of more than 9 pounds Have high blood pressure or cholesterol Exercise less than 3 times a week You can do a lot to lower your chances of getting type 2 diabetes by: Watching your weight Eating healthy Staying active

MMW Webinar: Medicare Medicaid Financial Alignment Initiative (MMAI)

H.A.S. is currently seeking candidates for the following positions: ► ADDICTION COUNSELOR ● Master’s degree in the Social/Human Sciences of Social Work is required. ● Must be IAODAPCA Certififed (CADC). ● Must be certified to facilitate a DUI Risk Education Class. ● Thorough knowledge of substance abuse and its modalities of treatment; ● Knowledge of ASAM criteria and DMS-IV diagnosis; ● Able to conduct didactic groups and provide individual counseling.

► CASE MANAGER ● Bachelor’s or Associates degree in related social services area is required. ● Must have at least 2 years in field of counseling or managing in alcohol/substance abuse. ● Must have a thorough understanding of social and cultural patterns of Hispanics and minorities. ● Must have excellent written and verbal communcation skills. ● Attention to detail and ability to meet outcome quotas. ● Willing to work flexible hours including evening weekends ● Possession of a valid Illinois motor vehicle operator’s license is required. ► RESIDENTIAL AIDE (PT) ● High School or its equivalence is required. ● Experience of one (1) year in the substance abuse field, mental health or counseling field ● ● Have basic knowledge of the disease concept of alcoholism/substance abuse ● Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license with clean record. ► INTAKE ASSISTANT ● Associates degree or 2 years experience in an office environment ● Have excellent written, oral and organizational skills; ● Knowledge of MS Office Applications ● Must be able to respond to crisis situations effectively. ● Willingness to work flexible hours, including 2 evenings per week. ► RECEPTIONIST/CLERICAL SUPPORT ● High school graduate or its equivalence. ● Must have good verbal and written communication skills. ● Must have at least one year of related experience. ● Knowledge of MS Office Applications ● Willingness to work flexible hours. ● Must be able to incoming calls and people in an effective and courteous manner. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred for the above positions.

Youth Suicide Prevention Wokshop

This workshop on youth suicide awareness and prevention, presented by the Jason Foundation, Inc., is not meant to make anyone an expert or to become a crisis counselor in youth suicide prevention; however, this workshop will provide tools to use with those youth who may be at risk for suicidal ideation. The Jason Foundation programs are based on the Triangle of Prevention model in order to reach all areas of a young person: parents, educators/youth workers and youth themselves. The workshop education includes information about the magnitude of the problem of youth suicide, statistical information, warning signs and elevated risk factors. The cost of this workshop is $25 and 2 CEUs will be provided for Professional Counselors and Social Workers only. A light breakfast will be provided.
