Promoting artists of power and distinction since 2003

Wake Up Clarinet! is the first family release for Etkin, who was a featured performer on

Putumayo Kids‘ award-winning compilation album Jazz Playground earlier this year and

whose 2009 Motema debut, Kelenia, was named Best World Beat Album by the Independent

Music Awards. With Wake Up Clarinet,Etkin turns the spotlight on his innovative Tim-

balooloo method for enriching the innate musicality of young children. Etkin‘s method

effortlessly conveys sophisticated concepts in a fun musical language that kids of all

ages can understand.

Hailed by Down Beat as one of the most, “multi-dimensional keyboard players

on the scene today,” whose music reveals those multi-dimensions in sensual living

color, Marc Cary’s continual search for his musical identity has brought him to all

corners of the earth, quenching his thirst to bring forth indigenous musics in all of

their forms.

While One Sky displayed the Guggenheim Fellow’s prodigious talents as a compo-

ser, Another Look takes a major leap towards showcasing the strength and depth

of Cohan’s gifts as a pianist and as an improviser. “While my previous recordings

centered more heavily on my writing, this project offers a perspective shift towards

spontaneous playing. We went into the studio immediately following several weeks

of touring in Europe to capture a live feel and the raw essence of my group. It was

the perfect opportunity to record”, said Cohan.

world‘s foremost pianists and composers, a true innovator and visionary. Encompassing

the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa, his global creations musically continue to inform

and inspire. His new CD, The Storyteller, will be released by Motéma on November

9 and will serve as an historic sonic companion to Weston‘s much anticipated auto-

biography which will be released by Duke University Press in November as well. 2011

will mark Weston‘s 85th birthday and there are many great things in store this coming

year for this Jazz legend. Stay tuned...

A debut release it may be, yet Water flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the seasoned talents of the giants of blues, gospel and soul that have influenced Porter throughout his career. Six months after the release of his debut album, Water, vocalist Gregory Porter has been nominated in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category of the 53rd Annual Grammy® Awards. Porter has received raves internationally for Water, which cracked the JazzWeek Top 10 radio chart shortly after its May release, and which has been selling briskly in the US and Europe. AllMusic.com called Gregory „an absolu-te showstopper of personalized soul“ and Straight No Chaser declared, „Simply put, Gregory Porter may be our next great jazz singer.“ Porter continues to gain consistent praise as one of the best male vocalists on the scene today, with comparisons to Joe Williams, Nat King Cole and Donny Hathaway. Water is also being singled out on several „Best Of 2010“ year-end lists. On this emotionally intimate debut, Porter bares his soul to reveal a performer and songwriter of unusual depth. His moving ballad, „Illusion,“ about the struggles one faces in relationships, releases this month as the first video single of the album.

For the first time, Gilberto’s complete songbook is recorded to georgeous effect by two of Brazil’s finest talents. It is a sign not only of greatness but vitality when artists repeatedly challenge them-selves and their listeners through works that both affirm and expand the legacies of their art form. Geri Allen meets this standard.Flying Toward The Sound, is a monumental addition to the solo piano canon. Conceptually ambitious, virtuosic in its execution and spiritual in its essence, this deeply moving recording reveals Allen in visionary communion with two fine Fa-zioli pianofortes.

“Geri Allen conceived of this project in relation to three modern jazz pianists in whom she finds inspiration: Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock. Allen does not play their music; instead she plays toward it, around it, through it to her own unique voicing... resulting in a flight of light and sound.” – Farah jasmiNe GriFFith

With a voice that can caress or confront, embrace or exhort, Gregory Porter exhibits such an incredible degree of vocal mastery that no less a jazz luminary than Wynton Marsalis has gone on record to call him „a fantastic young singer,“ which makes the fact that Water (out now from Motema Music) is his recording debut even more impressive. A debut release it may be, yet Water flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the seasoned talents of the giants of blues, gospel and soul that have influenced Porter throughout his career. Some of the singers that Porter cites as influential are familiar - Nat King Cole, Joe Williams and Donny Hathaway - and others – such as the pastor of the church he attended as a child among them - may never realize their impact on his development as an artist. While the work of singers such as Hathaway or Cole obviously helped to shape Porter’s vocal styling, his own world view, as evidenced in his seven original compositions and his striking interpretation of classic songs such as „But Beautiful“ and „Skylark,“ adds an emotional intensity that makes each of the CD‘s eleven tracks speak so eloquently.

For the recording, Porter tapped a powerful cadre of strong players, among them the iconic alto sax player James Spaulding (Max Roach, Freddie Hubbard, and Bobby Hutcherson, et al) who plays a featured role on two tracks: “Wisdom” and “Black Nile.” The CD was produced by saxophonist, pianist and composer Kamau Kenyatta, who Porter refers to as his „best friend.“

In fact, it is Kenyatta who bears much of the responsibility for Porter‘s career trajectory, which can be traced back to Porter‘s early days singing in small jazz clubs in San Diego. He lived there while at San Diego State University which he attended on a football scholarship, as an outside linebacker, until a shoulder injury sidelined him permanently. Recognizing his talents, Kenyatta - along with saxophonist Daniel Jackson (Ray Charles, Buddy Rich, Art Farmer and more) - nurtured the burgeoning performer, and, as Porter says, „taught him what he needed to know.“

Kenyatta invited Porter to visit him in the studio in Los Angeles, where he was producing the flutist Hubert Laws‘ Remembers the Unforgettable Nat King Cole. Certainly Kenyatta was aware of Porter‘s childhood infatuation with Cole‘s music, and certainly he could hear the echoes of Cole‘s mellow baritone in Porter‘s own voice. What he could not have predicted was that when Laws heard Porter singing along when he was tracking the Charlie Chaplin-penned „Smile,“ the flutist would be so impressed with the young singer that he would choose to include a ‚bonus‘ track of Porter singing the song on the album.

The intimacy of Porter’s „Nat King Cole and Me,“ revealed a courageous thespian, who bravely shared his life story with his audience, so it‘s hardly surprising that many of the songs on Water come also from an emotional place

Born in Los Angeles, raised in Bakersfield, and now living in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, Gregory Porter has made the world his musical home. A frequent guest performer with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Porter also maintains a long-standing residency at Harlem‘s venerable St. Nick‘s Pub, and performs internationally.„I‘ve been to Russia about 17 times,“ says Porter. „I now can make a mean borscht.“

You can catch Gregory now in a featured role in Low Down Dirty Blues, a musical inspired by the jam sessions of Muddy Waters, Ma Rainey, Sophie Tucker, Howlin‘ Wolf and Pearl Bailey. The musical is currently running at the Northlight Theatre in Chicago and after July 17th will be transferred to the Florida Stage in Manalapan.

kern hoch gelobtes Motema Debut „The Art of Improvisation“ vorlegte.

“Some bassists stand out for the strength of their walking lines, their fl uent technique or their expertise with the bow, or the musicality of their solo conception. Bassist/composer Rufus Reid has all of these covered, and much more. As a bassist, he is the total package. The same can easily be said for his skills as a composer and a bandleader.” – Grammy winning jazz journalist Bob Blumenthal. He has achieved “living legend status” as a man for all genres, and not just for his musical prowess, but because he lights up a stage, a classroom, everyone he meets, and most importantly, audiences around the globe. Not content to simply rest on these laurels, Reid chose to turn his focus towards the goal of excelling as a composer in formats ranging from solo bass to full orchestral scores. In a few short years, this “young” composer has gained major recognition and has landed numerous grants and awards.

His new recording on Motema Music, Out Front, is further confi rmation that there is nothing typical about Rufus Reid, his music or his bands. The title of the recording, and the special camaraderie and chemistry the bassist shares with pianist Steve Allee (Buddy Rich, John Clayton, The Randy Brecker Quartet, David “Fathead” Newman) and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca (Trio Da Paz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, John Scofi eld, Lee Konitz, Joe Henderson, Nancy Wilson, Slide Hampton, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, amongst many others), is explained here by Reid: Out Front suggests several connotations. “In addition to being ‘out front’ as the leader, my playing in this setting is somewhat atypical in that this music stretches far beyond the bebop boundaries for which I have received recognition in the past. The interaction with these uniquely talented gentlemen and the outcome of this music is a direct result of my dedication to my own continuing compositional and harmonic growth and adventurous spirit. It is fueled by my desire to continue to stretch and grow artistically with every original piece I conceive and with every recording I make.” With Out Front, Reid, Allee and Da Fonseca have succeeded in a sonic experience that is likely to leave you with the desire to make repeated visits until the music reveals all the little things that combine to make it so very special.

The music KJ writes, produces and arranges is always evolving. Recently she has been working on a new recording project featuring singular renditions of jazz and pop classics and has broken new ground with a new reggae anthem titled „Choose Your Weapon,“ available as a digital single download at www.kjdenhert.com. In addition to her moving original songs, she’s much loved for her own unique arrangements of others‘ material. „I like to get inside people’s heads with songs that everyone knows but that no one would ever expect in a jazz setting. I unveiled my rendition of ‚Smoke on the Water‘ at the Rochester International Jazz Festival this summer and the place went wild. Everyone was smiling and asking for the recording. I have to hurry up and record that too!” says Denhert.

A Grenadian-American with mixed West Indian roots, KJ Denhert was raised in the Bronx. A self-taught instrumentalist, her love of music first became evident at 10 years old, when she composed her first heartfelt song on a four-string guitar. An expert wordsmith whose lyrics tell deeply personal stories that communicate universal truths, KJ began to seriously hit her stride as an independent songwriter, recording artist and producer in 2004 with the release of her album GIRL LIKE ME. The song “Little Mary” off that album won first place at The Mountain Stage New Song Contest. “It was a breakthrough album for me artistically, which inspired me to leave my day job and focus on my music one more time,‘ she explains. She next released the impeccably produced and performed THE SONGWRITERS NOTEBOOK, on which she collaborated with fellow songwriter, Adam Falcon, also an accomplished guitarist. The CD opens with a soulful version of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Agua de Beber” arranged for two voices and two guitars. Closing the disc, KJ’s original song “Private Angel” won the Kerrville New Folk Song Contest that year and earned her second Independent Music Award nomination.

In 2006, she took home the Independent Music Award for “Best Live Performance CD”, which honored her fifth album “ANOTHER YEAR GONE BY, LIVE”.“They call me Lucky 7…lucky thing is I never give up…” These lyrics are pulled from the title track of her seventh album, LUCKY 7 (Motéma 2007). .“ Recorded in part with funds provided by a grant from Women in Music, Inc., and released by Motéma in 2008, this disc also received a nomination for an Independent Music Award in the live performance category.

Both as singer and lead guitarist, American jazz musician KJ Denhert captivates with her powerful, emotional vocals and masterly skills:

She describes her style, which is now enjoying a continually growing number of fans outside of the USA, as a mixture of urban folk and jazz – with just a little R&B and pop thrown in for good measure. Together with her unique vocals and profound lyrics, these are the ingredients for an album that has caused a stir thanks to its wide spectrum of musicality. This musical variety is based on thirty years of jazz experience.

„Dal Vivo – Live at Umbria Jazz“ is her latest album, which has been recorded in a perfect atmosphere of the winter Jazz-Festival in Umbria / Italy. All songs are live recordings, inspired by the enthusiastic and lovely Italian audiences, which made this CD outstanding and takes the listener to a journey of emotions and groove, just like you were there...

This CD was recorded at the Umbria Jazz, Winter Festival held in Orvieto Italy from December 28th 2007 through January 1st 2008. This was my fourth invitation to Umbria Jazz. All songs were recorded live, inspired by the enthusiastic and lovely Italian audiences. Our esteemed percussion-ist ì Bujoî  Kevin Jones was added to tracks 6 & 9 during the mixing process because he was unable to tour at the time.  The spoken Italian introduction is the voice of my dear friend Enzo Capua. No other music, instrumental or vocal performance was added.

I was so delighted to feature Aaron Heick on saxophone that I decided to record all nine shows. Aaron  wasnít invited because I wanted to add saxophone, I wanted Aaron Heick! When you reach the end of the CD I expect that youíll understand why and that this is not a simple platitude. I think of Aaron as a second vocalist, working across the whole body of work Iíve chosen for you from this series of concerts. Our sound is built upon years of performing together with open arrangements and open solos. We welcome back from Lucky 7, co- producer Bennett Paster on keys and John Caban (Live, Girl Like Me, Lucky 7) on electric guitar, with my venerable rhythm section of over ten years, Mamadou Ba and Ray Levier on bass and drums respectively.

Guitarist Roni Ben-Hur comes from Israel and has belonged to American jazz’s true greats for many years. Keepin’ It Open is his fifth album and, at the same time, his debut on Membran’s “Politur Jazz” label.

The American press has sung the praises of this extremely varied album: “Keepin’ It Open is a marvel of taste, tunefulness and tone.“ (Michael Hochanadel, Daily Gazette) – “A delight from start to finish!” (Mike Joyce, Jazz Times)

Roni Ben-Hur plays ballads, emotional bossa nova and fiery bebop in his inimitable style – and his passion for Old School Jazz is obvious while doing so. The ten album tracks are in keeping with the traditions of great jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell and Grant Green – but also tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins.

A “swinging” track – My Man, Harris – is dedicated to his mentor Barry Harris and further highlights are Ben-Hur’s interpretation of Thelonious Monk’s Think Of One and Indian Summer, once so brilliantly performed by Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey.

Music has been Roni Ben-Hur’s passion ever since his childhood years – something that can certainly be heard on Keepin’ It Open!

TrACKLISTING

The Italian Antonio Ciacca was born in Germany but lives in America – he is a extremely gifted jazz pianist and bandleader to be heard on his new album, Rush Life. It is his fourth studio album but the first to be released on Membran’s “Politur Jazz” label.

No one less than Wynton Marsalis prompted Ciacca to move his focus from classical music to jazz – and the first track, Squazin, is dedicated to Marsalis. Ciacca’s true “training as a jazz pianist” began when he started touring Europe with tenor saxophonist Steve Grossman and other jazz musicians; Ciacca wrote Flat 5 Flat 9 for Grossman – a track with a touch of hardbop and the fiery sound of an Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Meanwhile Antonio Ciacca ranks alongside American jazz greats like Benny Golson and was appointed programme director of the jazz department of New York’s Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in 2007.

Rush Life – the album’s title and title track – is a musical snapshot of Ciacca’s still “young” life as a New Yorker; multi-faceted and full of nuances. Definitely worth a listen!

tracklisting

Both as singer and lead guitarist, American jazz musician KJ Denhert captivates with her powerful, emotional vocals and masterly skills: her latest album is called Lucky 7 and is the first to be released on Membran’s “Politur Jazz” label.

Lucky 7 is a cross-section of Denhert’s creativity to date and an impressive statement of her talents. And to give those who are not yet familiar an idea of the excellence of KJ Denhert’s live gigs, the album closes with the live track Rivera.

Incidentally: KJ Denhert caused a stir at this summer’s Umbria Jazz Festival as “warm up act” for Alicia Keys. It’s one thing to miss her concerts – to miss out on this album would be a different kettle of fish altogether!
